Ashton Court Estate Ashton Court Run 10k and McCain Bristol Cross Challenge 12 and 13 November In November 2011 runbristol will be adding a weekend of off-road events to it s portfolio of races which currently includes the highly successful annual Bristol half marathon and Bristol 10k. The events will take place in the grounds of Bristol s historic Ashton Court Estate. The weekend will include something for every type of runner - from those who fancy a friendly race in the beautiful setting of Ashton Court and the opportunity to raise valuable funds for charity, to the dedicated Cross Country athlete who trains hard and wants a tough challenge, racing against some of the UK s most talented runners. Ashton Court Run 10k Saturday 12 November 2011 Saturday 12th November sees a new partnership between the runbristol team from Bristol City Council and Cancer Research UK building on the success of the former Cancer Research UK Run 10k. 5 Ashton Court Run 10k Pre Race Information Guidance for participants Participants are advised that they are responsible for their own safety before, during and after the event, this includes the wearing of suitable clothing and footwear as appropriate for the conditions. Runners may also wish to ensure they have an up-to-date tetanus injection. Application information The race is full and there will be no entries on the day. If you need to discuss your application, change any personal details or discuss items in this pack, please ring the race hotline on or Are you fit to runbristol Remember this event is a measured off-road race and is 10k/6miles long please read the Hints & Tips section of this leaflet and ensure you prepare yourself for the race properly. If you begin to struggle you can always slow to a walk, or drop out. It is unfair to you, your family or the event staff to risk being a medical emergency, even if you are running for charity. Medical information, race number and timing chip You will be sent a race number and MyLaps/ChampionChip timing chip. It is essential that you bring these with you to the race. Never swap your race number with any other runner as it could create a dangerous medical situation in the event of an emergency. Anyone who is found to have swapped their number will be disqualified. You must provide full and correct medical and contact information on the back of your race number using permanent ink and ensure that your relatives (or other named person we can contact) have your race number for reference. Also ensure you write the name and phone number of the relative or other named person we can contact if necessary, on the back of your race number. Try to remember to do this before you leave home. DO NOT USE YOUR OWN CONTACT INFO ON YOUR NUMBER!). On-line information The event website will be updated regularly with information about race day and other useful information so please check it frequently. In the unlikely event that the race has to be cancelled details and instructions will also be published on the website. r u n b r i s t o l. c o m p a ge 3

Run for a Reason support Cancer Research UK and together we will beat cancer Cancer Research UK is the world s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Our groundbreaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has seen survival rates double in the last 40 years. But more than one in three of us will get cancer at some point in our lives. Our research to beat cancer is entirely funded by the public. And thanks to their generosity our scientists, doctors and nurses are leading the world in discovering new ways to fight cancer. This is research that saves lives and helps keep families together for longer. We are a national charity with a local heart Bristol and the South West are very important to us. Over 90% of the population lives within 30 miles of a ground-breaking Cancer Research UK funded research institute. In fact, Cancer Research UK spent over 1 million last year in Bristol on some of the UK s leading scientific and clinical research. For example, researchers funded by the charity at the University of Bristol are working to understand more about how cancers grow and spread. Finding ways to tackle this is vital to help more people survive the disease. p a ge 4 Where your money goes When raising money for Cancer Research UK, every pound you raise makes a huge difference. l l 10 could buy 300 glass slides for studying cells and tumour samples in detail under the microscope. 22 could equip a scientist with a lab coat and a pair of safety goggles. These help protect against harmful chemicals and prevent experiments from getting contaminated. l 43 could buy around 500 cryotubes, needed for the protective storing of cell samples at very low temperatures. l l 94 could cover the cost for one woman to take part in a clinical trial aiming to improve survival for post-menopausal women with early-stage breast cancer. Cancer Research UK is funding a clinical trial to find new and better treatments for acute myeloid leukaemia, or AML. It costs us around 320 for each person to take part in this trial. r u n b r i s t o l. c o m

Ashton Court Run 10k Race Day Race entry queries The race admin service provider FRSystems information desk will be open before the race to deal with any problems relating to your race pack, race number or timing chip. Time zones and race times Fast runners should assemble adjacent to the pink flag nearest the gantry. Joggers should assemble adjacent to the blue flag. Walkers should assemble adjacent to the yellow flag at the rear. All participants are expected to complete the course by 1.30pm (ie in 2h 30min). If you choose to continue after this time you do so at your own risk, and accept that the race organisers cannot guarantee that any race, car park, or medical facilities will remain in operation. Race Numbers On race day please wear your race number on your chest, secured with a safety pin in each corner. The number must not be cut or altered in any way to reduce its size. It is your responsibility to ensure you arrive at the finish line with your race number intact. Without it you will not be allowed to take part, or receive a time, or medal. Do not remove your number until you leave the race village. Timing clocks There will be a race clock adjacent to the Start/Finish gantry. Timing Chips This will provide you with an accurate race time and should be worn on your shoelace during the race. Please attach it securely and be aware that it will not work if you attach it to another part of your body. Race Drink Stations There will be a water station at approx half way (5km) and at the Finish. Medical conditions If you have a medical condition, it is vital that you notify the race organisers on prior to the event. Please also write details of your condition and / or any medication you are taking on the reverse of your number (for example: asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, notable allergies, cardiac conditions). Please read all the information on before taking part in the race. Medical Points St John Ambulance will provide a first aid point adjacent to the event services area (the Meeting & Eating big tent). During the race they will provide mobile cover. If you require medical assistance on the course please notify the nearest marshal. A St John Ambulance sweep vehicle will also follow at the rear of the race and collect any runners unable to complete the course. Should you require urgent medical assistance just past the Finish Line you will be escorted off the course otherwise please keep moving and go to the main St John Ambulance First Aid unit. r u n b r i s t o l. c o m p a ge 5

Ashton Court Run 10k Course Marshals and Instructions Marshals will be located around the two lap course to monitor, direct and assist runners. If you need assistance at any time during the race, they should be your first point of contact. Please be aware of the need to maintain emergency ambulance access at any time and observe marshals instructions to move to one side if necessary. For this reason we ask that you do not wear headphones. Finish Area At the end of the race runners will pass under the Finish Gantry and cross the timing mat. All participants will then be directed through the finish services area - to receive a drink, foil blanket and medal. Please keep moving as quickly as possible through this area before exiting into the public event areas. Timing chips can either be left in the tubs in the finish area left in the tubs in the Meeting & Eating tent. Cancer Research UK runners are welcome to head to the Cancer Research UK meeting point in the large tent after the race for a drink, snacks and for some much needed rest and relaxation. Post Race Information Race results Results will be available on the race website from 9pm on race day. There will also be a special Bristol Evening Post souvenir edition supplement on sale on Monday 14th November. All runners will also be sent an official Finishers certificate following the race. Race Photography The official race photography service will be provided by marathon-photos.com. Their photos will be available to view and purchase via the race website Thank you The runbristol race organisers at Bristol City Council and race charity Cancer Research UK would like to thank all those individuals and organisations without whom the race would not be able to take place. Particular thanks go to the Chief Marshals including help from Bristol & West AC, Great Western Runners and Westbury Harriers, St John Ambulance and all the other volunteers who give up their valuable time to help organise and manage the event. r u n b r i s t o l. c o m p a ge 7

Ashton Court Run 10k Hints and tips Whether this is your first race or you are an experienced runner, please remember these helpful tips over race weekend. DO... DON T... Do drink plenty of fluids in the days before the race. Dehydration is the biggest problem that distance runners have to overcome. Do acquaint yourself with the route and where all the facilities you need are located, particularly the drinks stations. A map is enclosed in this leaflet and may be downloaded from the event website. Do eat before the race. This should be about three hours before the race start. Do warm up thoroughly with plenty of stretching and easy running. Do plan your race realistically allowing for your general level of fitness and conditions on the day. Do follow the advice of the stewards on the day they are there for your safety. Do get to the start area with plenty of time to spare. Try packing your kit the night before and ensure you have plenty of spare kit available, including a fresh pair of shoes. Do write details of any medical problems and medications (including herbal, alternative and over-the-counter) on the back of your race number. Don t come to race or take part if you have cold or flu symptoms. Don t run the event with a cold or infection your condition will only worsen, and it can lead to permanent problems. There are always other races! Don t consume alcohol before the race Don t run in old shoes and ensure new shoes are run-in. It is essential that nothing rubs and leaves you with sores or blisters. Don t run on a full stomach as this will make you feel extremely uncomfortable. Don t keep training hard right up to the event you ll burn out. A few days rest before race weekend will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to race. Don t run with injuries - you will only make matters worse. Don t start off too quickly as this will inevitably lead to you slowing down. Don t remove your race number until you leave the event site. r u n b r i s t o l. c o m p a ge 9
