Hope everyone had a very enjoyable Christmas with friends and loved ones? My husband, youngest daughter and myself met up with our son (who lives in London) and eldest daughter (who lives in Vancouver) and spent a lovely Christmas in a little village called Freshford, 10 minutes outside Bath in the UK. It was so lovely to be with them but very hard to say goodbye again. I hope everyone has a very enjoyable and rewarding indoor rowing year ahead. 2 The Paddling, Rowing, Presentation and Jazz Party at our place in January was very successful and enjoyable. Congratulations to all the medal winners from the 2016 Australian Indoor Rowing Championships. Kelvin Bazley 4 Gold, Wendy Coghill 4 Gold, Gwynn Davies 1 Gold, 3 Silver, Tibby Kemp 1 Gold Tyler Pearce 2 Gold and an Australian Record. Zoe Brown, Michael Cosgrove, Jack Craig-Daley and Jarryd Stringfellow also competed at the Sunshine Coast Event in the Australian Championships and won medals. The medals were presented by Andrew Wallace, the Federal Member for Fisher. Andrew and his wife, Leonie, made a great impression on everybody at the Party. They are really lovely people. Head Coach, Rob Cossalter, and Assistant Coach, Roberta Gordon, were very busy assisting and coaching lots of guests with Indoor Rowing, including Andrew. He should have a very strong team for the Politicians Relay at the 2017 QLD Championships. Michele and Logan from the Girl Friday Jazz Band were brilliant. Everybody definitely enjoyed the great music and singing. The Quartet has lots of gigs coming up on the Sunshine Coast. On Friday, the 24 th February they will be performing on a Jazz Cruise at Mooloolaba. If you want to be part of that cruise, book online at I highly recommend Girl Friday and the Blue Water Jazz Club. Lots of the Party guests also had heaps of fun paddling on stand up paddle boards, surf skis, kayaks and boards. Please note, if you were not able to be at the Presentation for the medals, the medals will be available at the Training Day on Sunday, 19 th February or you can collect them from our place at Wurtulla. After undergoing heaps of tests, including a recent angiogram, it has been discovered, that there are a number of blockages to Wendy s heart. Wendy will have a bypass operation at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Chermside in Brisbane very soon. So no more swimming, rowing, paddling, body boarding or squash for some time. Luckily, Wendy also loves reading, TV, Sudoku puzzles and playing Chess as she will not her active self for some time. On behalf of myself and everyone at the Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club we wish you a very speedy recovery.

4 QLD INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS Sunday, 4 th June at Kawana Waters State College The Entry Form will be on the QLD INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONHIPS website early February. MEDAL ENGRAVING will be available at the CHAMPIONSHIPS at the very reasonable price of $6 per medal. So bring along all your medals from other Championships and Sports and take advantage of this excellent offer. The 2017 medals, you are aiming to win, can of course be engraved on the day. 5 ROB COSSALTER Head Coach Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club. I did my certification through Ian Gibson from Wollongong a few years ago. I have a Diploma of Fitness and Recreation and with my past 16 years experience working in the Fitness Industry as a Personal Trainer, Aerobics instructor, Boxercise, Tae-bo, Pilates, Abs classes, Fitball classes, Children fit classes Circuit training and conducting fitness assessments and writing programs for specific goals, whether for personal health reasons or sports specific. Having an understanding of the Physiology and Anatomy of the human body was important to know for recommendation of training. Aerobic and Anaerobic training are all important to understanding what is required for an individual s goal. Besides all of the above I trained and taught Ju-Jitsu for 26 years (Black Belt 1st degree which took five and half years to get) and taught for 16 years. I also have a Diploma of Women s Self Defence, which was over a 2year period at the Qld Police Academy. I have taught private groups and High School Students since All the above knowledge has helped me with my rowing and how to push to the limits as a personal choice. As a Fitness trainer I experimented with lots of testing, heart rates etc. Just in case anybody thinks that I'm a novice instructor/coach/trainer here are some of the distances I have achieved. Not sure how many people have tried doing all the distances in rowing. Besides the normal distances, that we all do 500m 1000m etc., I have also rowed many times the:- 5000m 10,000m 30 min 60 min Half marathons Full marathons 100,000m in 2002 and 2004 age 50 normally done by a team of 8 and changing every minute. Concept2 did a 2 page story write up, when they used to publish their magazine back in Cheers Rob Cossalter

The picture was taken at the top of Stanwell Tops. This is a famous hang gliding spot. In the background is the Sea Cliff Bridge. It is great to hit the peddles hard going over the bridge as you sweep out over the sea. All my rides with my riding buddies end up in the coffee shop! Ian Gibson

QLD SPECIAL OLYMPICS The QLD Special Olympics Championships will be held on the Sunshine Coast in late April. The Swimming will be held at the Caloundra Aquatic Centre on Saturday, 29 th April.

7 QLD SPECIAL OLYMPICS The QLD Special Olympics Championships will be held on the Sunshine Coast in late April. The Swimming will be held at the Caloundra Aquatic Centre on Saturday, 29 th April. A number of timekeepers are required. In 2014 a number of Sunshine Coast Masters Swimming Club members, including Wendy Coghill, did timekeeping for this unreal event. Unfortunately, in 2017 that day is a Swim Meet at Yeronga in Brisbane. Tracey Harman from the Indoor Rowing Club and her daughter also really enjoyed this experience in It was an amazing day volunteering for the Special Olympics. All the competitors were so thrilled and excited just to finish an event. It was so inspirational. Wendy will also aim to get some students from Kawana Waters State College to do some timekeeping at the QLD Special Olympics. Please contact Wendy, if you can volunteer for the Special Olympics. Your reward will be a brilliant day and you will feel great. No experience is required. Most people can learn to use a stopwatch in a couple of minutes. In 2018 Maroochy Sea Serpents Dragon Boat Club are aiming to send their Pink Sea Serpents (who are made up of breast cancer survivors and supporters) to Florence, Italy to compete in the Dragon Boat Festival. This festival is held every 4 years, the last being held in Florida in 2014, whereby breast cancer survivors (both women and men) from around the world meet up to take part in this amazing festival. To help raise money to send the ladies to Florence we are hosting an Italian Night (please see brochure below). Tickets to this event are available from Alex Surf Club by either popping into the club office or by phoning the club office. Hope to see you there!!
