1 2015 QUEENSLAND MASTERS ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS SUNSHINE COAST INDOOR ROWING CLUB Editor: Beverley McCuaig We did the 2015 Qld Masters Rowing Championships recently in near perfect weather Coomera Regatta Centre...our Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club with just 7 of us competing came 5 th out of 25 rowing clubs... we won 28 medals between us. There were rowers represented from NSW, Vic and Canberra as well as the entire lot of Queenslanders. I stroked 4 boats to Medals... 2 Gold and 2 Bronze and won 6 medals myself out of 8 races... 2 Gold 1 Silver and 3 Bronze. Kerrie won Gold in our women s F Quad... the only medal for her. She was absolutely thrilled. Cherrie Morton

The 2015 QLD Indoor Rowing Championships will be held on Saturday, 20 th and Sunday, the 21 st June. The venue will be Kawana Waters State College at Bokarina on the Sunshine Coast.

The Kawana Aquatic Centre is next door to the College. It is only a few minutes walk to the magnificent beaches of Bokarina and Wurtulla.

There will be collection cans for Give Me 5 for Kids and Alex Surf Club at the venue. So please bring lots of loose change.

2 The 2015 QLD Indoor Rowing Championships will be held on Saturday, 20 th and Sunday, the 21 st June. The venue will be Kawana Waters State College at Bokarina on the Sunshine Coast. The College is opposite Lake Kawana, which is used for lots of Dragon Boat, Kayaking, Rowing and Outrigger regattas. It is also the venue for Open Water Swims and Triathlons. The Kawana Aquatic Centre is next door to the College. It is only a few minutes walk to the magnificent beaches of Bokarina and Wurtulla. This area is a magic part of the Sunshine Coast and QLD. The QLD Indoor Rowing Championships are supporting 3 Charities. Give Me 5 for Kids, The Haven and Alex Surf Club. There will be collection cans for Give Me 5 for Kids and Alex Surf Club at the venue. So please bring lots of loose change. The Haven is an organisation that supports homeless people and those really struggling in the community. If everybody could bring a donation of some warm clothing, maybe a blanket or some non-perishable food that would be really appreciated. Kawana Waters State College is a proud supporter of this charity.

3 Mrs Ricki-lee Bernhardt-Turpin Senior Drama Teacher Arts Faculty/Year 12 Coordinator/Theatre Company Director The Production Crew of Kawana Waters State College are so thrilled to be involved in planning for and managing the Qld Indoor Rowing Championships this year. We have managed many diverse events over the past 8 years, but never an indoor rowing event, so this is special for us all. Thank you for believing in us, we are working hard to create an exciting, slick and memorable event for you. So who are we? We are an enthusiastic group of year 11 and 12 students studying live theatre and services taught by Mrs Ricki-lee Bernhardt-Turpin, who is always on the lookout for unique experiences for us to engage in. This subject offers us all the chance to specialise in theatrical makeup, lighting, sound technical support, costume, props, set design and event management. We have experience in numerous events such as: Music Competitions, Harmony Day Festivals, School Discos and Special ceremonial parades. FOOD PLUS. Yoghurt and muesli Fruit salad (for the early birds) and yogurt Muffins Protein Balls BBQ Sausage Sizzle Sandwiches freshly made daily Assortment of Packet Chips Mixed sweets bags (a little sugar pick me up) Souvenir Water bottles $8. DRINKS Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate Bottled water Sports drinks Soft Drinks This event is our practical assessment task and our teacher will be observing us as she assesses us on our event management skills and team work skills over the duration of the weekend. We have also selected some of our talented musicians to perform for you, a great venue with Café and Alfresco area set up the whole weekend. Everything you need at the Qld Indoor Rowing Championships is within the College Performing Arts Precinct for your convenience.

RELAY for LIFE Wendy was a Teacher/ Leader for Kawana Waters State College at the recent Relay for Life held at the College oval at Bokarina.

Pauline, Margy and I are in the Indoor Rowing Club and we are all in the Maroochy Sea Serpents Dragon Boat Club and the Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast Club. Pauline is a new member of the Indoor Rowing Club. Wendy. RELAY for LIFE Wendy was a Teacher/ Leader for Kawana Waters State College at the recent Relay for Life held at the College oval at Bokarina. It was an inspiring, exhausting and challenging experience. Wendy was the top fundraiser for Kawana Waters State College. Thank you to those in the Indoor Rowing Club, who sponsored Wendy. Wendy was in her running shoes once again going door to door for the Red Shield Appeal. Wendy was accompanied by the captains of the Kawana Waters State College, Eilish and Tara.

Prices will be $33 for a singlet and $37 for a shirt, the same as in to TIBBY Kemp World Record 1000 m set at the Training Day in April To Roberta Gordon who broke her own Australian Record for 500 m at the Training Day in May

7 There is tiered seating in the theatre and the warm ups, registration and raffles are in the dance room with a big mirror..

8 Hi All, here is the entry form for the 3rd Winter Ergo Marathon & Half-marathon which is being held on Sunday July 26 at Urban Rowing. For the first time we have added a Four-person team Marathon relay which allows four members to each complete around 10,000m each in relay format using the same ergo of course. You might row 2500m four times each, or 5000m twice each etc. There are no rules attached to this category other than each member rowing around 10,000m each in relay. The Challenge was completed by 21 people in December with the Marathon of 42,195m completed by 10 rowers and the half marathon completed by 11 people. The event is designed more to be a 'Personal Triumph than a race so there is a lot of chatter and banter going on during the rowing. Fun is the focus. We are limited to 30 ergo s so get in early if your up for the challenge. We have attached the times from last December for your information

The first day of the tour, 14 April, took us to the area to get an understanding of the Gallipoli landing and battles, Lone Pine, cemeteries, and conditions at the time.

9 The view from our seating of VIP arrivals at Lone Pine Ceremony. PDN GALLIPOLI 2015 I received a double pass to Gallipoli 2015 in the category of Direct Descendant. My father, then known as Neil Wood No 807 was a member of 24 th Battalion. The history of the Battalion is recorded in a book by J W Fraser titled The Red and White Diamond, so called after their shoulder patch. My wife, Elva, accompanied me to the ceremony, and our daughter Lisa, although not a pass holder travelled with us on a two week tour of Turkey. All but eight persons on the tour were pass holders. The first day of the tour, 14 April, took us to the area to get an understanding of the Gallipoli landing and battles, Lone Pine, cemeteries, and conditions at the time. Friday 24 April began by leaving Bursa in the morning and travelling to Gallipoli. We arrived at the site about 7pm and passed through three checkpoints. We had assisted mobility passes which included seating and internal transport. The night was conducted by Sydney Daily Telegraph journalist and cartoonist, Warren Brown. In the lead up to Gallipoli, he retraced and wrote on parts of the Cooee Call of WWI with daily reports for the newspaper. During the night, history of the campaign was portrayed on screens and approaching dawn, a flotilla of naval destroyers from various navies, including HMAS Anzac from Australia formed offshore. For me, the most poignant moment occurred shortly before the Dawn Service. The lighting was reduced to reflect upon the waters of the original landing. The sound of the ripple upon the beach was tastefully, gently amplified to recreate conditions at the time of the original landing. There was virtual silence from the crowd of 10,000 for the several minutes during which I felt quite emotional, as I am sure most were.

The Hill at the right is one of two scaled at Gallipoli in 1915 The Service at first light was led by Master of Ceremonies, Major General Mark Kelly and attended by Prince Charles, Prince Harry, Tony Abbott, John Keys (NZ), and other official guests. It was a moving and excellently conducted ceremony. I am sure a great many in Australia watched the Service at home on television and would have been equally moved. The Service at Lone Pine commenced at 11am and the New Zealand Service at Chunuk Bair at 1.45pm. These Services, normally conducted earlier in the day, were scheduled at the request of the Turkish Government, which desired that VIPs attend all three services. The only access to the area is by a single road. With security very tight, and exit by Royal family members and invited guests the priority, the first of more than 300 buses to depart did not leave until after 5pm. Our bus was boarded at 6.30pm and we arrived at our Istanbul hotel about midnight. In all, we had been sleepless for 40 hours or so. Nevertheless to be chosen from so many applicants for such an occasion was indeed a privilege. I conclude by expressing our appreciation of the Australian volunteers, many of them also sleepless for so long and maintaining their sense of propriety and humour. Val Sheehan agreed to act as Club Captain Warren Irons has agreed to be Vice President President's Report Wendy Coghill reported on the progress of the organisation of the Queensland Indoor Rowing Championships which will be held on the 20th and 21st June 2015 at the Kawana Waters State College. She reported that the venue was provided free of charge from the school, the students from the school will be helping to set up the venue and will also provide assistance over the weekend of the event. All rowing machines offered for sale have been sold, medals and t/shirts have been ordered and paid for. Wendy has also looked into getting drink bottles complete with logo to sell at the championships. The insurance for the championships is due to be paid.
