For numerous of our Sundance club members it has meant the pinnacle of achievement as a runner, even to have the privilege of qualifying. For runners and non-runners worldwide it has been a celebrated event rarely tarnished by scandal. It has become an American institution, which unfortunately, is also the very reason the Boston Marathon became a target for those with the intent of undermining the American ideal. Whether a terrorist is acting alone, with misguided ideals, or a group of individuals, Ricardo Guidolin was just coming around the corner, headed to the finish line Monday at the Boston Marathon when he heard a loud explosion. The Stockton runner was at mile 26 of the 26.2-mile race when he went to make the final turn and saw a huge billow of smoke. Then there was a second explosion, which he actually witnessed. "We knew when we looked up ahead and saw people staggering around that something had happened," the 75-year-old runner said. "Then the Boston (police) started running and they stopped us. There were about 7,000 of us that didn't finish because it had become a crime scene and Ricardo at the Boston chooses terrorism to draw attention to their issues, theiranti-american sentiments and resulting actions will only work against them to further strengthen the American resolve to deal with any terrorists. In the end there is no amount of justice administered, condolences or flowers given, or public recognition that can take place of the loss of a mother, daughter, or of the irreparable damage following the loss of a limb. My heart goes out to every individual who suffered from this ordeal and I pray that the wounds heal quickly. they had to shut down the race." Stephen Finishing the race? Improving his time? That suddenly became the last thing on his mind. "It's great to know that there are still people around that are helpful and good. The Boston PD, the emergency workers, the medical personnel, the volunteers. I can't say enough good about them and the work they did," he said. "I can't even think about me. When I have any thought, it's about the people that lost their lives and the people injured." Is he going to run again? "Of course," the veteran of more than 30 marathons said. "This can't stop me." 2 Boston Makes Me Cry The fifteenth of April is my Mom s birthday. This is the day I set aside to revisit, and so keep alive, the memories of my mother. So I was already in a melancholy mood when I heard the news that two bombs had exploded near the finish line of this year s Boston Marathon. I cried when I heard the news, and I cry today just thinking about that day. First, I cry because there are bad people in this world. For whatever reasons, things go into a brain, things go on inside a brain, and sometimes what results, is a person who doesn t care about, or perhaps even thrives on, the grief, sadness, and despair they bring about through outrageous behavior. It does no good to try to figure out why there are bad people in this world. There are bad people and sometimes the thought of that makes me cry. Second, I cry because there are good people in this world. There are people who are trained to respond to emergencies. Providers of medical, police, and fire services are trained to keep their emotions in check and act to save and protect lives, even as they put their own lives at risk. I cry for these people and their families. There are other people who were not trained to provide such services, and yet many of them came through and saved lives too. People with no medical training, applied pressure to wounds, applied tourniquets to limbs, and in so doing, saved lives. They had no training, but like all of us, they knew that human blood is precious and ought not be flowing onto the street. There are good people in this world, and when I hear the stories of what they did on 15 April 2013, I tear up, I cry, and I am overwhelmed with the many demonstrations that there are so many more good people in this world than bad. Within each of us, lies the potential to become like the worst of us. Events like Boston, show that most of us have much stronger tendencies to rise up to be more like the best of us. -- Gerald Hyatt SUNDANCE RUNNING CLUB MEETING MINUTES th Sunday, April Treasurers Report: Club $ CAL 10: $ Steve has not held a marketing meeting yet. He is still trying to get more people interested in our club. The Record is one option but we have not been able to get them to publish our weekly runs in one of their weekly event issue or even get a response from them when they are called. The Asparagus Festival Run is Sunday, April 28th. Volunteers are needed to fill various spots on the run, plus help with registration and package pickup on Friday and Saturday before. Those interested can call Cindy Milford to volunteer. The May meeting will be held May 19th, due to Mother's Day falling on our regular meeting day. It will be at Ari Hope's residence. A great presentation was given by Jerry & Mary Hyatt on their trip to England. Lots of pictures shown, plus some history going along with the photos. No further business discussed. Respectfully submitted Marlene Kinser May The Sprint
