1 MARCH/APRIL 2012 VOLUME 4, ISSUE 2 THE FINISH LINE NEWSLETTER ZOOMERS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA RUNNING AND TRIATHLON CLUB ZOOMERS SCHOLARSHIP FUND RECIPIENTS: ASHLYNN AND KYLA STRAUGHAN Twin sisters Ashlynn and Kyla Straughan, both members of North Port High School Class of 2012, will receive $500 and $250, respectively, towards their fall tuition. ASHLYNN STRAUGHAN Ashlynn Straughan has been a Zoomer member for years and has participated in many of our local 5k races as both a runner and a volunteer. Ashlynn plans to attend the University of Central Florida to study Forensic Science. Ashlynn has been on the cross country and track teams at North Port High School since her freshman year and has been the recipient of both the Coaches Award and the MVP Award. Ashlynn intends to continue running in college and beyond and is extremely excited about the possibility of running on the track and/or cross country team in college. Congratulations, Ashlynn! KYLA STRAUGHAN Kyla Straughan has been an active member of Zoomers for years. Just like her twin sister, Ashlynn, Kyla has been both a participant and volunteer at many of our races. Kyla plans to attend the State College of Florida and hopes to achieve an Associate in Science degree. Kyla participated on the cross country and track team at North Port High School until this past year. She received the most improved runner award in 2008 and sportsmanship award in 2009 and Although currently not running on a team, she said that she plans on running some 5K races in the future and will use running to stay fit. Congratulations, Kyla!

3 CHIP TIMED ZOOMERS RACES ARE COMING! Members in attendance at the March membership meeting voted unanimously to purchase an IPICO Sports Chip Timing System. A chip system should significantly improve the flow of traffic at our finish line as well as improve the timeliness in which we are able report results especially at larger races such Turkey Trot 5K and Frosty 5K. The decision was based on thorough research completed by Bob Geyer, who has been studying the various systems for many months. Bob presented his findings to the club officers at a meeting on February 29 th and then to all Zoomers in attendance at the monthly membership meeting on March 7 th. Bob presented graphs and detailed information showing the total costs for various available timing systems. Many questions were asked and Bob explained the pros and cons of each system. The IPICO System was determined by those present at the meeting to be the system that best fits our mission statement and our current financial state. The system will feature a reusable foot chip that participants will attach to their shoe and because we are going green by opting to reuse our tags (as opposed to disposable tags), the system will pay for itself over the course of a few short years. To cover the initial start-up costs of the system, Zoomers has taken out a $5,000 loan through Road Runner s Club of America. We hope to have the chip system up and running by the middle of the year. Our members often travel far and wide for races or vacations and no matter where we go; we always bring our running shoes. The Finish Line would like to publish photos of our members running On the Road. Ideally the photo would have a background indicative of location. Race start/finish lines, city skylines, geological features and even a field of sunflowers would work. There is only one condition: You ve got to have your running shoes on. When submitting your photo, please provide a brief summary or caption (location, date, who is in the photo) or short story to complement it. 6 MEMBERSHIP MEETING HIGHLIGHTS FEBRUARY 2012 and MARCH 2012 ZOOMERS KIDS SUMMER RUNNING SERIES TO BEGIN MAY 31 ST The first run of the 2012 Kids Summer Run Series will be held at Dallas White Park on May 31 st, 7PM. This is a 5- week race series for youth, with a run being held every Thursday evening from May 31 st through June 28 th. The cost per child for the 5- week series is only $5. For additional information, please contact Joan at Emjm67@yahoo.com VACANT CLUB OFFICER/CHAIR POSITIONS: VICE PRESIDENT AND VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR Effective March 31 st, Ed Morgan, your current club Vice President and Volunteer Coordinator, will be stepping down from both of his positions. Ed has worn many hats in the Zoomers organization over just as many years and has decided that it s time for a well-deserved break. Although we are heartbroken over Ed s departure, we would like to wish him all the best and thank him for his constant service and dedication to not only the Zoomers organization, but also to the community in general. ONLINE APPAREL UPDATE At March s meeting, Melissa reported that Eastbay, the company from which we were going to purchase our custom apparel, is not opening any new online stores for the time being.
