3 President s Message by Ed Gillen Welcome to 2016! This is a very big year for Zoomers as we celebrate our 20 th year as a Southwest Florida Running and Triathlon Club. Where did the name Zoomers come from twenty years ago? Although you can envision yourself or other members speedily zooming to a finish line at a race, we weren t named for being fast. From what I ve been told, our club s name actually came from a piece of equipment called the Zoomer Swim Fin as many of our early members were triathletes. Let me introduce myself. My wife Roxanne and I moved to Port Charlotte from Albany, N.Y. in August We were both very involved with running clubs there so when we were looking for houses in this area in 2011, we were hoping to find an active club here. We were fortunate to meet up with Kimmi and Lou van der Veen, Bob and Carol Geyer, Ed and Joan Morgan and other Zoomers during a fun club event canoeing down the Peace River. We were thrilled that the club did fun events too. Since arriving, I have served on the Zoomers board as Recording Secretary (2013) and Vice President ( ). As with many volunteer organizations, sometimes you wear more than one hat. I ve also served as Race Director of Zoomers Trick or Trot 5k Trail Run (2013-) and coordinate Zoomers volunteers at other events. Under the leadership of Dug Stetter, the Zoomers board has made some pretty big changes over the last two years. We ve moved away from timing other events so we can now focus on presenting our own events - whether running, biking, swimming or social. We believe this will make us a bigger, better, stronger and more welcoming club. So, as a member, what would you like to see in the upcoming year and beyond for Zoomers? Let us know! 4 Zoomers Race Series 2016 Rules and Regs (Adults) Race Series Points will be awarded as follows: 10 pts Overall Male and Female 8 pts Master Male and Female (age 40+) 8 pts Grand Master Male and Female (age 50+) 8 pts Sr. Grand Master Male and Female (age 60+) 8 pts Veterans Male and Female (age 70+) 6 pts 1 st Place in age group Male and Female 4 pts 2 nd Place in age group Male and Female 3 pts 3 rd Place in age group Male and Female 2 pts completing the Race All races will be considered as part of the race series; however, only your best 6 races will be scored (6 races must be run as a minimum). You must OPT IN to be eligible to earn points for the 2016 Race Series. You can sign up anytime of the year. Once enrolled, you start earning points. If you don t sign up then you don t get any points. To OPT IN, please go to and click on Race Series. Points are NOT retroactive; you will start accumulating points from the time you OPT IN. A confirmation will be sent to you. If you do not get one, contact ZoomersRaceSeries@gmail.com. Whatever Age you are on December 31, 2015, you will be placed in the appropriate age group and you will remain there throughout the Entire race series. This only applies to the Zoomers Race Series Scores. Points are cumulative throughout the year. Only paid and active adult members of Zoomers, over 20 yrs of age, will be awarded points. If your membership is expired, you will be removed from the series scores until membership is renewed and will not earn points for races during that lapse of time. Scores are decided by the Race Director and Timing Company for each race. Zoomers is NOT responsible for race results. Scores will reflect as published for each race. It is the participant s responsibility to locate the volunteer sign in sheet at each volunteer opportunity to sign in. If you do not sign the volunteer sheet, you do not get credit. 12 Butternut Squash Soup with Chipotle Cream Recipe courtesy of Marcela Valladolid Total Time: 1 hr 45 min Prep: 15 min Cook: 1 hr 30 min Ingredients 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 medium butternut squash, halved lengthwise, seeds discarded, washed, and reserved Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 medium onion, chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 6 cups chicken broth, divided 2 teaspoons minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo Chipotle Cream: 1 teaspoon minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo 1/2 cup sour cream Salt and freshly ground black pepper Directions Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Using 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, grease the sliced surface of the squash and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Arrange on a baking sheet and roast until very tender, about 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. In a large heavy pot over medium-high heat, add the remaining olive oil, onion, celery, and carrot, then season with a pinch of salt. Saute until just tender, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and saute for 2 minutes. Scoop the butternut squash flesh into the pot and stir. Add 4 cups of the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer until the vegetables are very tender, about 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and using an immersion blender, carefully puree the soup until very smooth. If necessary, add more of the remaining stock to create desired consistency. Mix in 2 teaspoons of the chipotle into the soup, and season with salt and pepper, to taste. In a small bowl, mix together 1 teaspoon of chipotle and the sour cream. Season the chipotle cream with salt and pepper, to taste. Transfer the soup to bowls. Top each with a dollop of chipotle cream and serve. 12 Zoomersrun.com

If you currently do not have an account created with RunSignUp, then you can create a new account from your Zoomers club information (use the you gave ZOOMERS), and if you currently do have an account on RunSignUp, then you can merge the Zoomers Club information with your existing account. Zoomers has Sent out Claim s to members to claim their accounts or create one. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP ON RUNSIGNUP if you don t want to. If you want to renew another way you have 3 options Zoomersrun.com / PayPal, send in your Paper Registration or hand Dug or Marti your form and check at a race. But PLEASE claim your membership on runsignup so we can better manage our members. We are moving to runsignup for the convenience of our member s info. With automatic discounts and the ease of changing all memberships to the month of June, the managing of the membership rolls will be a lot easier.
