1 Volunteer Guide for Staging Staging running events is key to a well- run track meet. To stage efficiently the staging team needs to work with the Starter, Announcer and Coaches from each of the teams participating. At the Moorpark High School Track there are three key staging areas: 1. The Main Staging Area located behind the 100 starting line. This area includes Pre- staging, On- Deck Staging and the 100 Race staging area. 2. The Distance Race staging area located behind the finish tent. 3. The 200 Race staging area located on the infield next to the 200 starting line. These areas are noted on the picture below: 200 PRE On Deck Distance 100

3 Moorpark Striders Staging Plan Page 3 The key to smooth staging is pre- staging. This will take place at the main staging area. The layout of the area is as follows: PRE On Deck 100 The flow of Main Staging is as Follows: Event On Deck (Kids standing in formed heats by event) Race Staging (Kids standing in heats at either 100, 200 or Distance area) Pre- Staging on Grass (Line Up Fast to Fastest to form Heats)

4 Moorpark Striders Staging Plan Page 4 The Main Activities that occur at each of these areas is as follows: 1) Pre Staging (3 volunteers) This is the most important element of staging and sets the pace for the meet. The key tasks that happen here for each event are as follows: i) Before starting to stage the event at hand call the announcer on the radio and ask him to announce third and final call for the next division/event. Example: If you are ready to stage Midget Girls for the 100 ask the announcer to make his third and final call for the Youth Girls and Boys 100, Second Call for Intermediate Girls and Boys 100 and first call for the Gremlin Boys and Girls 800. A detailed summary of these calls is included in Exhibit I at the end of this plan. ii) Line the kids up in Fast to Fastest (slowest to fastest). Work with coaches if available to determine kids relative speed, use competitor tags to determine speeds. You do not need to be perfect, just do your best. iii) Once organized send the kids by heat to the back of the line in the On Deck Staging area. If you want to even the heats out you can move the fastest 3 kids to the middle three spots. 5 Moorpark Striders Staging Plan Page 5 iv) 4x100 Relays will be organized in the pre- staging area and then sent directly to the On Deck Staging Area where then they will stand in lane order. On%Deck%Staging% Relay Pre- Staging Pre=Staging% Team%Relay%1% Team%Relay%2% 9%%%%%8%%%%%7%%%%%6%%%%%5%%%%4%%%%%3%%%%%2%%%%1% 2) On Deck Event Staging (1 volunteer) On Hold Event Staging will work in one of two ways. i) For individual events the heats will be advanced to their final staging area as follows: Event Race- Stage Area 3200 Distance 100 Hurdles M Hurdles 100 4x100 Relays Start and Relay Handoff Zones 1600 Distance 400 Distance 100 Main 800 Distance x400 Relays Distance i) For Relays the teams will be lined up in lane order and advanced to the 100 Race Staging Area as a group.

6 Moorpark Striders Staging Plan Page 6 3) Race Staging (2-4 volunteers depending on event) Race Staging will work in one of four ways: i) The hurdles and 100 will advance directly from the On- Deck Area to the 100 Race Staging area and advance in their lanes and each race is started. ii) The races that start from the distance race area (3200, 1600, 800, 400, 4x400 Relays) will advance from the On- Deck staging area with a volunteer escort to the Distance staging area. In that area runners will be given hip tags and combined into final heats. The starter and head finish judge will supervise the combining of heats. iii) The 200 heats will advance from the On- Deck staging area with a volunteer escort to the 200 staging area. The heats will be lined up in their lanes behind the 200 start and will advance as heats are started. iv) The 4x100 relays will be lined up in the On Deck staging area by team in their lanes. They will advance to the 100 area in their lanes. Each team will have their lane number written on their hand. Volunteer escorts will take each stage of the relay to their respective handoff areas as follows: PRE On Deck 100 3rd 2nd 4th 1st
