NEW OFFICERS FOR THESE ARE OUR NEW OFFICERS ELECTED AT THE ANNUAL DINNER AND THEIR APPROPRIATE FLAGS WHICH YOU WILL FIND ON THEIR BOATS. AMY AND DICK WILL HANDLE THE RACING, TRISH WILL CONTINUE TO HEAD THE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. ED AND CONNIE WILL HANDLE THE SECRETARY DUTIES. KEITH WILL CONTINUE AS COMMODORE AND BEVERLY AS TREASURER. AMY AND ED WERE ELECTED TO THE NEW TWO YEAR TERMS. KEITH, BEVERLY, AND TRISH TO ONE YEAR TERMS. LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER GREAT YEAR. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW BOARD. Judith and I were out on the lake today for a three hour sail and we just couldn t believe how fortunate we were. November 19th. An absolutely beautiful day. For those of you who have never lived someplace where it s cold and snowy you just can t appreciate how beautiful it is here. Well the activities haven t slowed down and the participation has been really great. Quill called me two weeks ago on a Friday to tell me about the advertising agency doing some sort of video on the Lake for BRAC. On just one night s notice we had eighteen boats out cruising around and having a great time. Keith was playing with his new purple and Yellow Spinnaker, boats reaching back and forth, on a beautiful day. Amy and Lisa challenged me to a race to Short Creek so we sort of separated from everybody (she won) and just got back in time for the copter to make it s passes. Amy also got the idea to have an impromptu race last Saturday before the Annual Dinner. Again on short notice we had 8 boats show up and although the wind was light it was great fun. I couldn t understand why

Volant was so slow. I managed to get the Spinnaker up for a downwind start and had eight knots apparent but could only make about 1.9 with the spinnaker filling nicely. When I took it down the boat stopped dead in the water and when I finally got around the mark and headed upwind I had terrible weather helm and in eight apparent the boat would only do 2.2. Normally in those conditions I can easily make 4.5. It wasn t until I turned on the motor and the tiller began shaking like crazy I realized I d been towing weeds. And it was quite a clump. About ten or twelve feet of weed was on the rudder. My keel sheds them but the huge rudder doesn t. Fortunately when you back the boat up you can rotate the rudder 360 degrees and out they floated. The lake was full of debris from IDA s rains upstream. If you missed the Autumn Challenge you missed a great event. Two races under the pursuit format in gusty and funky winds. We raced with a young woman named Rosanne Martin whose father ran the mark boat. She was a college sailor at Jacksonville State and currently races a C&C 37 and a J-30. I let her helm the boat both races and of course she was not used to the light and twitchy helm on the Colgate. The gusts really were a problem. We could never get in a nice groove going to windward. She asked if the winds on the lake were always so weird and we just laughed. She d never sailed anywhere with such shifty winds. And for everybody who participated she also said you took her to School. Everybody out there did a great job of sailing under some interesting and difficult conditions. The racing was incredibly tight. Lot s of ties and tie breakers. Amy won the over all Fleet Honors, Charlie Rains the Spinnaker Division over John Marsh on a tie breaker, Amy won A Fleet, and Tony Martin with his son Neal won B Fleet. But all the racing was really close. Eighteen boats with nineteen entries. The dinner and awards ceremony was a whole lot of fun. Thanks to Trish and to Dick for getting it all done and also to Mary Stewart who provided the committee boat and to Mr. Martin who set the marks and kept us entertained with his radio work. And thanks to everybody on the Social Committees who made the dinner, decorated the club house, and put in a lot of work. I ve said it before but our little club runs very professional and excellent regattas. The Annual dinner was a great success. Trish says 67 although I counted 70. The slide shows were great, and I particularly liked the entertainment when they played Southern Cross. Of course the dinner was good and the company great. We voted on the new by laws and a slate of new officers and did a little club business. Dick Potter presented a bunch of awards and both Charlie Rains and George Brown were given past commodore flags for their great efforts towards the club. I hope everybody is pleased with the plaques given out. And congratulations to Rich Mason who received the first annual award for most improved sailor. Quill provided this nice addition to the club. It s been a really great year with lot s of new people participating and I hope next year is even better. But it all just doesn t happen. It s our club so we can do whatever we want to. It just takes some effort and participation. I m hoping to convince Amy to include at least one long race next year with two legs. Maybe even an overnight down near Honeycomb. And anybody who has any suggestions or interests in cruises or races or fun events let the board know. It s all about having fun out on the water. Other little tidbits. There s another Island Packet in the marina. A beautiful 32 belonging to Sanford Colley. Boat is named Desiderata and recently came over from Brown s Creek. I understand Sanford has an extensive sailing history and we can t wait to hear more about it. And finally I want to thank the board and the club for the lovely framed Binnacle and the Burgee. It was unexpected and I really was pretty speechless. If you know me very well you know that was amazing. Doing the Binnacle is a lot of fun. And I want to thank John Frost, Bill Hicks, Clark Mason, Jo Kelly Edwards, George Brown, Mary Stewart, Jerry & Linda Creager, and everybody else who has contributed stories, photos, and help. I know there s talent out there. I really, really, appreciate all the kind words and the feedback on the Binnacle but I d love to hear from more of you with your own stories and pictures. Great Sailing. Sterling

Commodore Keith Kuhlman Thank you to everyone who attended the annual dinner and made it such a success. It was a great crowd that mingled well with everyone which made it a great evening for new and old members. As always Amy of Gunter s Landing did a great job with the setup and the food. It was noteworthy that we had 22 new members join the marina this year. I think special credit goes to Quill and owners for all the improvements to the facility and the reduction in the slip rent this year. It has made the marina a great value and a fun place to be. Several awards were presented at the dinner. Dick recognized the winners of the series races which I am sure he will detail in his article. A notable new addition to our awards was a plaque, donated by Quill, for the Most Improved Sailor. Congratulations to Rich Mason on his improvement this year (can you say folding prop!!). We also presented dock name plates to all members attending the meeting. In an effort to help us all get to know each other and the new members, the Board elected to use the proceeds from the Guntersville Cup Silent Auction to purchase dock name plates for our active members. Note, that since the plates cost $18 a piece we did not purchase them for the idle boats. If you did not receive a plaque and would like one, please see a Board member. Check out your slip first as we have mounted the plaques that were not handed out at the dinner (lucky dogs!!). We even got some business accomplished at the meeting. The revised By-Laws were passed unanimously (did anybody read them!!!) and a new slate of officers was approved. Well almost new. Thankfully Trish, Dick, Sterling and Beverly agreed to stay on in their important roles leading our social, race, communication and financial programs. Amy moved from secretary to Vice Commodore and will be in charge of all sailing programs (Dick to assist). Our newest Board member is Ed Miller who will serve as Secretary. I want to thank all those who will continue to serve and welcome Ed to the Board. I hope everyone in the club will continue to pitch in and help your Club Officers execute their various programs. With a little help from our friends the jobs are much easier. The Board will be getting together in December to begin plans for the upcoming year. I know Amy has some innovative ideas to inject in to the sailing program and Trish is always creative in planning our social activities. I don t think Sterling can get any more creative than he has done this year with the Binnacle, but we will see!!! If you have any suggestions or ideas that you would like us to consider please let one of the Board members know. Speaking of new ideas, Charlie Raines suggested that we sponsor a boat Christmas decorating contest. This would be apart from the Stars on the Water Christmas Parade of Lights. That way we can avoid the need for generators and just plug the boats in at the dock. Anyway, I think it is great. So, let s plan on having a decorating party Saturday afternoon, December 12th, just before the club s Christmas Dinner. The club as quite a few tube lights in the storage shed. I would say there is enough to do three to four boats and maybe more if we ration. If those that have some spare lights can bring theirs we could end up with something quite spectacular. Thanks again to all for a great year. WINTERIZING THE BOAT HERE ARE TWO GOOD SOURCES OF INFORMATION TORRENSON MARINE IS WAY UP IN MICH AND KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT COLD. 4 Getting Technical here. We don t have to think much about motion comfort sailing on our lake. Those of us who scheme and dream to get back on the ocean and do some voyaging think a lot about it. There is no doubt that the older boats designed mostly to the CCA rule are much more comfortable at sea than modern fin keeled boats. Of course the down side is they aren t as fast to windward. Now I remember JP MOR- GAN once saying that gentlemen didn t sail to windward. Most passage makers don t either. And if you read some fascinating conversations with Ted Hood about voyaging and racing and comfort and speed you will find out that the older designed boats with soft bilges and lot s of displacement are actually faster in light air. Ted thinks the only reason any boat has a big genoa is the rating rule that doesn t penalize you for having it but instead penalizes mast height. I came across a study done for the US Navy about tolerance to motion. And one thing in the study fascinated me. It s the period of the acceleration that matters as much or more than the amplitude. The human body is most sensitive, in terms of motion sickness incidence at around 10-second periods (0.1 Hz)..and virtually insensitive at periods of 1-sec or thereabouts. (SEE:O Hanlon and McCauley. MSI curves define the sensitivity over the whole range.) Then I came across a theoretical way to determine Motion Comfort done by the very good designer Ted Brewer. The formula is as follows. (MCR = Disp / (2/3*((7/10 * LWL)+(1/3 *LOA))*Beam4/3 ). The formula predicts the speed of the upward and downward motion of the boat as it encounters waves and swells. The faster the motion the more uncomfortable the passengers. Thus, the formula predicts the overall comfort of a boat when it is underway. Higher values denote a more comfortable ride. As the Displacement increases the motion comfort ratio will increase. As the length to beam increases the motion comfort ratio will decrease. Modern fin and wing keel boats tend to jerk back and forth but they also tend to ride up and down faster than full keel boats with fairly narrow beam. The full keel boats with centerboards and the Scheel Keel boats are among the most comfortable in a seaway. Beam contributes to stability as does displacement. But it s rather interesting to note that the boats with the highest comfort indexes all have one thing in common. They do not have hard bilges and flat bottoms like most modern boats. Their bilges are soft and they carry their lines right to the keel. (THE DREADED PRISMATIC COEFFICIENT). By and large they are not designed with the extreme beam aft of modern boats. And lower wetted surface when heeled. Speed in a boat is relative. As Ted Hood pointed out you can t even sleep in a modern Ocean Racer without being jerked all over. It s not that they are unsafe or unseaworthy it s just that trying to voyage in one is incredibly tiring and wearing. With short handed cruising a couple will find it pretty hard to maintain fifteen knots even if the boat will go that fast. But it s also interesting that some of the boats with the highest Comfort Index also are the fastest. The Cherubini 44 is a perfect example. Only 4-10 draft, fairly narrow, but 1,200 square feet of sail, Ketch Rigged. A scheel keel. But reviewer after reviewer is blown away by it s speed both up and off the wind. Likewise Ted Hood doesn t design slow boats. Everything is a compromise. But big wide open modern boats have a lot more space below. However out in the ocean I don t care for big open spaces at all. You find yourself looking for a place to wedge or grab and the big open modern boats don t have any. I realize that most of us sailing on the lake could care less about seaworthiness offshore. But it is a very interesting exercise to think about if you are dreaming about voyaging. What boat would you take to sail across the Atlantic or even down in the islands? I ve included a list of boats just to play with. What you will notice is that the old Cat 27 s have a very good comfort index but the 270 s don t. Again it s the displacement, beam, and the hard bilges and flat bottom of the modern 270 that make it more uncomfortable. But look at another example. A Bristol 27 and it s modern successor the The old boat had a full keel and soft bilges. The modern variant a fin keel and more beam. The boats in our marina with the highest ratings are the Island Packet 35, the 31 Seafarer, Alberg 35, Original Hunter 30, Yankee 30, Erickson 29, the Catalina 27, and S By the way a Transpac 52 rates Wouldn t that be wild to Hawaii.

The boats are not only beautiful but very fast and amazingly expensive. Second to finish overall in the race by the way. If you want something a little faster off the wind the 48 Cherubini schooner is just right. There are two available right now. About a million. Harmony recently won the South China Sea Race, then sailed over to Australia and won class in the Sydney to Hobart, then sailed to the Med and finally came home. When you look at where the Cherubini s have been none have stayed home very long. Perhaps the ultimate sailing yachts that can be handled by a couple. By the way Harmony reported during the race they were conserving water so didn t use the washer and dryer. Tsk Tsk

RACING RACING RACING NEWS Dick Potter Race Chairman Well 2009 s racing season has finally come to a close. We had an on the spur-of-the-moment race on Saturday 14 just because the weather was great sunny and warm but with a light breeze. All told, we scheduled 30 weekend club series races, two regattas of four races, five joint pursuit races with Browns Creek and three specialty/novelty races. Early in the year we had bad weather but made up all except four of the 42 total. Not a bad record! The specialty races went down well, especially the Race to the Park followed by dinner at the State Park restaurant and Amy s novelty race where specially assigned tasks help slow down the faster racers. Next year, by popular demand, we will schedule a few more specialty races, as they are a great opportunity to get more of the less-serious racers to join in. All together we had fun and enjoyable racing. I have reviewed all the Saturday and Sunday races and broken down the series results to get overall results for each of the three Saturday and Sunday series. This gives us the following winners whom received some suitable awards at the Annual Dinner. Full results listing all 29 boats that sailed in the six series are given on the Web Site. Overall Saturday Series Results: (Combining the series results for all three series.) 1st. Teagartia Beverly and Keith Kuhlman 2nd. Escape Rich Mason 3rd. Mystic T Trish and George Brown 4th. Providence Randy Rathmann The above four sailed in all three Saturday series. Overall Sunday Series Results: (Again combing all results for all three series.) 1st. Bad Word Amy Stapleton 2nd. Teagartia Beverly and Keith Kuhlman 3rd. Escape Rich Mason 4th. Tie Volant Sterling Phillips 4th. Tie Mystic T Trish and George Brown The above five sailed in all three Sunday series. Now we are planning next years schedule which will provisionally start on Saturday march 6. Until then, I wish you all the best for the holiday season and the coming new year. Dick Potter EDITOR S COMMENT: MANY THANKS TO DICK POTTER FOR RUNNING THE RACING SCHEDULE THIS YEAR. IT TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT AND COMMITMENT AND DICK DID A GREAT JOB. THE WEATHER GODS WEREN T SO KIND TO OUR RACING BUT THE MAJOR EVENTS TURNED OUT WELL. OUR RACING HERE IS MEANT TO BE FUN AND IN- CLUSIVE. SO COME OUT AND PLAY WITH US. LIKE KEITH MENTIONED THE IMPROVEMENT IN THE SAILING SKILLS HAS BEEN PRETTY DRAMATIC. AND THAT S THE THING ABOUT RACING. YOU CAN KEEP MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE OVER AND OVER OUT DINKING ABOUT BUT WHEN YOU RACE YOU IMMEDIATELY SEE HOW TO MAKE YOUR BOAT GO FASTER.

Rear Commodore s Comments Trish Brown Social Chairwoman We had a good turn out (67) for our annual dinner at Gunter's Landing. The group was entertained by Kimberly Coffey and Donnie. The food was great! Everyone had a good time. We need new people to serve on the social committee. If you are willing to serve please give me a call or . We always welcome new ideas for activities. We would like to hear from you. What activities did you enjoy most and what activities would you like to add to our calendar. Thanks to all who helped make 2009 a fun year for the club. Please join us at the marina for our Christmas dinner December 12, 6:00pm. The club will provide the turkey and ham. We ask everyone to bring a dish of your choice to share (veggie, salad, dessert, or appetizer). Thanks for your support! PICTURES FROM THE ANNUAL DINNER. THANKS TO CLARK MASON. 9 NOVEMBER 2009 This is a really nice annual plaque that will be presented to the most improved sailor every year. Quill generously provided the trophy. Dick said that with twenty spaces he d be 95 when the last one was awarded. Rich deserved the award. He improved this year dramatically. And often sailing the big boat by himself. Those of us who single hand the boats know how hard it is to learn all the tricks you have to do in order to keep everything together. And often there is some little thing you want to do but simply can t because of the conditions. For instance I can t quite get to the lead cars to adjust them when I m by myself unless I leave the helm. In heavy air that s not possible. It also takes some time to learn a boat and Rich has done a lot of sailing in Escape over the last year. The folding prop didn t hurt, either. Well deserved Rich! And thanks to Quill for the idea and the plaque. Christmas dinner December 12, 6:00pm. Thanks to Trish Brown for the Photos on this page. I needed the one of Rich Mason. 11 New in the Marina. These are photos of a sistership. Island Packet 32. Out on C dock. Very pretty. I don t have a Hall of Fame boat this month but the Yankee 30 should be included. We are fortunate to have two of them in the Marina. Independence and Enterprise, two good Yankee names. For more info go to History Construction The Yankee 30 was produced from by Yankee Yachts, during which time 132 of these boats were constructed. As a consequence of the oil crisis and rising cost of fiberglass resins in the mid-1970s and John Shumaker's refusal to reduce the quality of his boats, Yankee Yachts ceased production in Subsequently, the hull, keel, and deck molds made their way to the Pacific Northwest and a limited number of boats were built by Heritage Boat Works in Hood River, Oregon, and Vashon Boat Works on Vashon Island, Washington. Eleven sister-ships, S&S design No C1 (Ruffian), known as the S&S 30 "down under" were also built by Swarbrick Brothers in Fremantle Australia. The fact that most of these boats are still actively sailed is a testament to their designer and builder. I had the good fortune to sail and race on a Yankee 30 out of Santa Barbara mostly PHRF and we did several off shore races, around the channel islands. The boats are incredibly fast in light air. They carry their lines to the keel very sharply and don t have much wetted surface skin friction. Nice narrow beam. If you look at PHRF results over the years around the country you will see that Yankees have continually performed well above their rating. While they perform perfectly for Southern California there were a lot of them on San Francisco Bay and they slog along quite well in heavy air. Quite a Note the swept back fin and the bustle and few of them have made long passages, to Bermuda and skeg on the rudder. Soft beautiful bilges. to Hawaii and beyond. I suppose by modern standards they are a bit cramped below because of the beam, they are intelligently laid out and comfortable for two or three. And like so many of the older boats they sit on their anchors quite well and don t go kiting off here and there. Quill owns hull number 1 (Independence) which has quite an amazing racing history and was helmed by Olin Stephens in it s class win in the Whitney Series in 1971.
