T H E MAINSHEET BYC Racing: Narragansett Bay and Beyond Bristol Yacht Club Takes 3rd Place at Halloween Howl in Marblehead On Saturday, October 27th, the Bristol Yacht Club Race Team travelled to the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA to compete in the Halloween Howl Team Race. The regatta was supposed to be a two day affair, but Hurricane Sandy had other ideas. Early Saturday morning, it was decided that the Howl would become a one day event so that EYC members, and Sonar fleet owners, could prepare for the storm. Ralph Kinder and his Broken Tiller Award L-R Back Row: Chris Bjerregaard, Alex Fridell, Charlie Enright, Mike Campbell, Jon Enright, Joe Whelan L-R Middle Row: Caroline Levesque, Meris Tombari, Pete Levesque, Nick Cromwell Front Row: Ralph Kinder Due to the way that the rotation was set up, Bristol did not sail until race 10. This turned out to be a blessing as the early races were plagued by serious light-air. By the time we got into our Sonars the breeze had shifted toward the south and built to around 6-8 knots, better than what they had before. Our first race was against the Corinthian Yacht Club, one of the local Marblehead clubs. BYC took them down and in doing so won our inaugural race, a very exciting moment for all involved. Next up was the Noroton YC. BYC got off to a bad start and ended up chasing all the way around the track. With this loss, we stood at 1-1 with New York Yacht Club waiting in the on-deck circle. We made quick work of NYYC and then beat the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club to leave the Everyone had a Ball at The Harvest Ball! Sarah O Neill led a fabulous event with great food from Robertos and great music from the Ed Massa band playing music from the 60 s, 70 s and 80 s in addition to everyone s requests they kept the dance floor full. Natalie s special Harvest Ball drinks were great hits and people really enjoyed the bar cards highlighting them. Robertos catering was well received - everyone loved the appetizers and soup, enjoyed the main course and some even loved the desert on a stick! water 3-1 in our first set. After taking two races off it was back into the Sonars to finish the Round Robin. Our fifth match was against the host, Eastern YC. This was one of the closest races of the regatta, back and forth multiple times. BYC won over the line but a last minute penalty eventually lost us the race. Up next was the Boston YC, we won that race handily. We rotated out one more time before going back in to sail a very strong Seawanakha Yacht Club team. The stakes were high, the winner of this race would make it to the final four, the loser could back in but their fate was with other teams and last minute tie-breaks. BYC did not get off the line very well but was able to make it a race by the third mark. Ralph Kinder s boat broke off their tiller, but managed to keep first place. The other boats cleaned up the garbage and Bristol took the victory, making the final four and sending Seawanaka home early. Bristol was joined by Vineyard Haven, Noroton and Eastern in the Final Four. Our first race was against Vineyard Haven. In this race all three boats got off the line well and we lead wire to wire. Our second race of the Final Four was a re-match against Noroton. During the Noroton pre-start, Charlie Enright received a black flag from former BYC Commodore, and Halloween Howl umpire, Charlie Cook. (COME ON, where s your team spirit!)the result of this flag was a 6 point penalty and, again, Bristol won the race on the water but lost with the penalty. After all of this, we still had a chance to win going into the last race against the host, Eastern Yacht Club. Unfortunately, we didn t get off to a good start and found ourselves on the back-foot the entire race. A loss in our final race put us in a tie for 2nd but losing the head-to-head tiebreaker to Noroton. On the whole, it was a great event for the Bristol Yacht Club. We are on the map. We look forward to doing more. Everyone is invited to participate. The sailing is great, the people are great the costume parties are great. (Well, at least at this regatta.) -Charlie Enright After the band left at 10pm, the party kept going with ipod dance music till 11 PM. As Natalie observed, everyone who attended the Harvest Ball was moving a little slowly at the club on Sunday. Event volunteers included Sarah O Neill as event lead and decorator, Brenda MacDonald on catering, Mary Ann Rosenlof for photography, and Janet Gendreau, Linda Silveira and Jennifer Doyle for setup. 83 attendees enjoyed the evening; all in all, this was a wonderful, fun event. -Jil Westcott

IT S ONLY A NAME... Bay Streaker Have you ever wondered how a particular boat acquired its name? I will ask that question each month to a BYC member, and provide the answer in this column. Bay Streaker is a Bristol 27 owned by Marcia and Lou Turenne. Why the name Bay Streaker? In the Turenne s son Pete s (Who happens to be our Dock Master) own words: Before we had the Bay Streaker it was owned by George and Eleanor McGinn, my mother s aunt and uncle. When they bought the boat in 1973, streaking was quite prevalent. People would streak as a form of protest, or sometimes just for fun. George used the streaking trend when naming his boat, a Bristol 27. Given the heavy, slower design of the boat, George hoped for a name that would help him streak around the bay. The Bay Streaker was born. When my parents bought the boat in 1990, they decided they liked the name and the history behind it. We ve been streaking the bay ever since. So.Now you know how the name Bay Streaker was chosen for The Turenne s boat. If you have a name you would like to submit please me, Peter Canzone at: americanart1@aol.com Save the Date! November 30th is the date for the annual Boatique at BYC. There will be new vendors and the old favorites with a variety of beautifully hand crafted items, from jewlery, knitted clothing, quilts, American Girl doll clothes, and more. Please come to see what is offered and plan your holiday shopping to purchase something special for those people on your list that you love. The TGIF buffet dinner will be provided at the usual cost. Come eat, have a drink, be social and shop, shop shop! 2012 Annual Meeting Sunday, November 18 at 1600 Hours BYC Clubhouse 2 For further information: Contact Susan Rood at or susanscats@cox.net

COMMODORE S CORNER It s not over til it s over Race award banquets, the mid-term Harvest Ball, even Decommissioning could not bring this season to completion. We were blessed throughout the spring, summer and fall with excellent boating weather that supported some very exciting activities. And then along came Sandy. Storm planning began a week in advance, through studying the various weather models and making equipment vendor reservations. As the threat increased, members were asked to volunteer their time and skills to prepare our Club. The tide chart dictated that the dock floats and launch removal be completed either before 9AM or after dark. At 6AM, about thirty members gathered to remove thirty five floats, gangways and boats; the last several floats were aground before being hoisted through the air and across to the lawn. The next day, a handful of volunteers returned to prepare the dock house, remove the ice machines, and secure loose boats and furniture. We weathered the storm, suffering only minor damage to the wharf s outer most railing. Not by luck, but rather by the skill, planning and execution of our members and staff. The waterfront committee over the years have designed an improved storm support structure for the wharf, a hurricane preparation plan for the floats, and then implemented these improvements through ongoing upgrades and maintenance. And it all worked. Thank you. So we ve decommissioned, hauled and winterized, yet our time with the Club is not over. Please join us at the Annual Meeting, Boatique, Children s Holiday Party and New Year s Pot Luck if you can. It s been a great year, and time to plan 2013, order the varnish and bottom paint, and chart next year s cruise. See you in the Chartroom, Craig 3

EBSF Fall Sailing News Fall Sailing Program A number of youth sailors at BYC have been enjoying the superb fall weather. A group of Optimist Sailors and a group of 420 sailors have been extending their season with Saturday training sessions. They attended the Atlantic Coast Championship regattas for their respective classes in New Jersey and then the Halloween Howl at Sail Newport. Numerous coaches and parents have supported the effort, including Trudy Robinson with the Optimist group and Kelsey Crowther with the 420 group. Mercury Fleet Haul Out When I asked John Duclos what were the logistics of hauling out the Mercurys he told me about the trailer, the cradles, the crane, and numerous other details. And then he added, One more thing -- it has to be raining. So we waited for a suitably grey and wet day and hauled the fleet on September 30th. Thanks to Jim Dollins, Ralph Kinder, Chris Bjerregaard, Brad Haverly, Alden Haverly, Nick Cromwell, Tom Williams, and apologies to anyone we inconvenienced as they went to the start of the Bud Humphreys race. Sailing Program Director Search Pass the word that our search is underway for our next sailing program director. We are accepting applications this month. We are advertising on Sail1design.com, which is the defacto college sailing website. A subcommittee is currently interviewing candidates. Mt. Hope High School Sailing Club is afloat in Bristol Harbor With the cooperation of the East Bay Sailing Foundation, at Bristol Yacht Club, and Principal Don Rebello at Mt. Hope High School a new high school club is offering sailing this fall in Bristol Harbor. Sailing is a growing high school sport, not to mention an activity which can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Practice began in September and has continued throughout October. Junior Jeff MacDonough and Sophomore Jonathan Medeiros are cocaptains of the club. Many high school sailing clubs or teams have begun with the generous cooperation of their local yacht clubs. The clubs typically have boats which they don t use during the school year, an insurance policy which covers these activities, and a community of people who want to share their interest in sailing. In addition to the Bristol Yacht Club community we have been lucky enough to connect with the Roger Williams Sailing Team. Last Saturday two RWU sailors coached the MHHS sailors. No experience is necessary to join the club, which uses 420 dinghies which are 420 centimeters long, about 14 feet. Most New England high school sailing teams use 420s, designed for two people with an average weight of 135lbs each. Barrington High School and Portsmouth High School both have sailing teams which also use 420 dinghies, as do St. George s and Portsmouth Abbey. Last year when I approached Principal Rebello and asked him if he would support the formation of the club Rebello explained that he would be pleased to grant the sailing club provisional status for a year, and that if it worked well it could become a full-fledged club sport. Mt. Hope High School has various offerings related to marine technology and boatbuilding and Rebello hopes the club will support and generate interest in these academic offerings. Sail fast, sail fair, sail far. -Richard Feeny Bristol Yacht Club Friday Night Team Racing This summer, a group of Bristol Yacht Club Members started some new racing on Friday nights. On any given Friday Evening you could find 4-7 Skippers racing on teams of two in short courses right off the docks. Using the Mercurys the teams were pitted against each other in 3 to 8 races a night. The key to this type of racing is that winning the race doesn t mean your team has won. You only win if your team has fewer points than the opposing team. Team Racing promotes and fosters working together toward a common goal. Unlike fleet racing where boats are pitted against all others on the race course, Team Racing relies on teammates working together. This type of racing, popular In high school and college sailing as well as beyond, is gaining momentum across the country. This fall the Bristol Yacht Club has been invited to sail in the Halloween Team Race hosted by Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead. The Bristol Team finished third overall; see the full article about the Halloween Howl in this issue of The Mainsheet. The Friday Night Team Race program will continue next year. Look for a notice of race and winter planning discussion in upcoming issues and on the BYC website. All are invited to come out and participate. 6 Staff Holiday Fund Again this year, we are enclosing a Staff Holiday Fund envelope in the Mainsheet for your gratuity to the staff. Money collected will be distributed before the end of the holidays. I cannot thank the staff enough for thegreat work they ALL did for the club this last season. Many thanks in advance! Should you wish to send Holiday greetings to individual staff members, here are their addresses: Chris Healey, Chief Steward 49 Hayden Ave. Tiverton, RI Pete Turenne, Dock Master 51 Sowams Dr. Jaymie McCanna 36 Fairview Ave. Warren, RI Jimmy Turenne 51 Sowams Dr. Kathy MacPherson 12 Tilley Ave. Newport, RI Kristine Magown 132 Summer Street Norwell, MA Scott Hamel, Dock Hand 859 Hope Street Sydney Sherman 1 Appleblossom Lane South Easton, MA Linden Wyatt 9 Crest Ave Lincoln, RI Don Hebert 80 Monson Road Stafford Springs, CT Natalie Pereira, Bartender 586 Fall River Ave. Seekonk, MA Chris Healey, Chief Steward Kimberly Giorgi 20 Belvidere Blvd, Apt 2 North Providence, RI John Grabowski 662 Park Avenue Woonsocket, RI Sail For Hope 2012 BYC s Top Cat Finishes First What a race! Thanks to all that participated. The weather was perfect. The wind was TOP CAT s wind, 15 knots average with gusts to 25 knots. The course was around Conanicut Island (Jamestown Island) clockwise. The start was off Rose Island and went South past Fort Adams and out into Rhode Island Sound, over to Beavertail and then North up the west passage. The course continued around the Northern tip of Conanicut, and South under the Newport-Jamestown Bridge to the finish line in Newport Harbor. Captain Jim knew that the boat to beat was FORTUNE, a classic 50 foot schooner and a long time rival. FORTUNE S PHRF is 93 vs TOP CAT s 153; FORTUNE would have to give us time. Jim also knew that the skipper of FORTUNE was well experienced in the course and knew where the tidal currents were favorable and where they were not, so the strategy was to follow FORTUNE, even when she went in close to shore. It worked! We had an excellent start with Jim at the helm and John Bell as tactical adviser. We nailed the start in clear air with 2 to 3 seconds to spare. Then the chase and follow activity started with plenty of avoidance dodging of other boats along the way. Hank kept timing and calculating the mark roundings of FORTUNE vs TOP CAT. Although the time difference spread more and more, Hank s last calculation came to approximately 5 minutes that TOP CAT would have over FORTUNE and thus would have taken the lead after corrected time was calculated. We were not able to see FORTUNE cross the finish line since there were many boats from other classes finishing up ahead of us. When results were announced at the After Race Party, TOP CAT took the first place trophy as it so well deserved. Doing the math on both corrected times showed that TOP CAT came in 5 minutes and 26 seconds ahead of FORTUNE in timeon-distance. Congratulations to Captain Jim Lengel and his crew, Paul Sanroma, John Bell, Hank Griffin, Ruth Souto and Pat Crawford -Paul Sanroma 5

2012 Fat Boys Laser Regatta Twenty-two hardy Laser sailors from all over New England descended upon Bristol Yacht Club on Saturday, October 20 for the annual Fat Boys Laser Regatta. After morning rain and fog cleared (not to mention the East Bay fire departments performing harbor pumping training) the racers enjoyed perfect conditions, with oscillating winds ranging from 6-22 knots. Moose McClintock of the Newport frostbiting fleet ran seven excellent races over windward-leeward courses. He was assisted by Tom Enright and Steve Gardiner at the start-finish line, with Ralph Kinder and Andrew MacKeith manning the mark boat. The winner was Seth Cooley from East Lyme, Connecticut, who sailed consistently well and finished with 33 points. Second with 42 points was Great Grand Master world champion, Peter Seidenberg of Portsmouth, RI (eat your heart out you young studs, Peter is 74 years young!). Dan Neri of Jamestown finished a strong 3rd, with two bullets to close the regatta. The regatta was a great success, with sailors and volunteers happy with the sailing and race organization. The club got great promotion for its upcoming frostbiting series this winter as well as in general as a great venue for this sort of event. Many thanks to all of the club volunteers, particularly Tom Enright and Phil Kinder for loaning their boats to run the races. -Ralph Kinder 2012 Fat Boys Laser Regatta Results Total Points 1. Be sure to take note of the Expired Flares Day to be held in conjunction with the Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol 6 Beyond the shore Waterfront News As I write this article, we anxiously prepare for the arrival of Sandy. The amount of tasks that consume pre-storm is sometimes daunting but, our crew handles it all with a calm methodology. Research is done on potential models and paths. Check out: or for a variety of models. Then, it s time to decipher the information and talk about it. Numerous phone calls are made Steward, Waterfront Chair, Commodore, Fleet Captain, Waterfront Committee Members and Storm Team. Tides are studied, a decision is made, and the crane must be called. This time it s a 7:30 haul out (high tide is around 6:30) We need about 3 hours to complete our operation. Chris has his notes, which eventually are placed on a white board. Pier system, boats, launches, dinghies, grounds furniture, awning, house etc.. No stone is left unturned. The volunteers arrive. There are two crews in the water. The workboat pushes docks up to the bulkhead where another team secures them to the crane. Heavy docks and tubs full of barnacles fly through the air in a sort of mystical pre-storm ballet. Hardhats are everywhere as are work gloves and boots. On the ground it s Dick directing the crane, Chris carefully directing the placement of each float in its designated spot so there is plenty room and safety for all. The floats we service on the harbor will have to wait. There simply isn t enough time to retrieve each one at this point. Pack up the crane and its time to wait till Spring. Commissioning is May 4, 2013; closer than it seems until we reassemble the puzzle again. The Waterfront Committee has arranged with the Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol to have an ignite your expired flares day at Bristol Yacht Club. Bring out your expired hand held flares and aerials on November 17 (Saturday) at noon following the grounds clean up and we will have a display and provide members with the opportunity to shoot their expired flares. -David M.
