1 THE BYC MAINSHEET The official newsletter of the bristol yacht club. Providing members with all the good stuff. BRISTOL YACHT CLUB DECEMBER 2015 Highlights from the 2015 Annual Meeting In his review of the financial results of the year, Treasurer Bob Elder reported that the club exceeded budgeted net income of $65,000 by more than $115,000. Income was $46,000 over budget primarily due to higher initiation fees, waterfront income and bar profitability. Expenses were down $69,000 due to lower insurance premiums, lower waterfront expenses, lower house repairs and tighter cost control in many other areas. Capital projects completed over the last year included renovation of the storage lockers, new launch dock ramp and sun shade, and House chimney and foundation repairs. Bob proposed and members approved the budget for 2016, which entails no changes in dues or fees. The capital budget provides funding for a major project to repave the parking areas and driveways and significant reserves for Waterfront, House and Grounds to fund future major capital projects in those areas. Reporting for Membership Chair Peter Canzone, Ruth Souto reported that the club s membership efforts were successful in filling 22 senior positions, and we now have a waiting list of 7. The two membership open houses attracted many new potential members. The membership committee has also put into place a new member mentor program, where the Navigators help new members become integrated into the club and actively participate in our committees sooner than otherwise. Speaking for Past Commodore Lippman, Peggie Perroto presented and members approved the slate of officers for In addition, Alan Dimson-Doyle and Fred Eichmann were nominated and approved as new members of the Audit Committee. Past Commodore Jim Dollins nominated and members approved Larry Gomes as a Lifetime Member and Bela Nagy as an Honorary Member, recognizing them for the significant contributions they have made to BYC over the years. Outgoing Commodore David Schwartz expressed his pride in the great condition that BYC is in today, including completion of a large number of project. We now have a full membership with a waiting list, improved methods for controlling costs and capturing revenue, and an improved ability for planning and funding long term capital programs. He credited and thanked the outgoing Executive Board for working well individually and cooperatively. One by-law change approved by the membership renamed the current Junior Sailing Committee as the Instructional Program Committee, focused on sailing instruction for adults and juniors. A new Junior Committee will focus on all BYC activities for children of members 18 years and younger. Roland Gendreau Secretary 2016 J-22 charters are open! 2 Executive board Meet Our Executive Board! Joe Brito COMMODORE Joe has belonged to the Club for 37 years, during which time he s been active in BYC cruising, racing, educational and social activities. He s served as Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, and Chair of the Social committee in the last few years. He s raced to Bermuda, stopped by at the Club hundreds of times on his way home, and worked on many Club projects behind the scenes. A recent grandfather, Joe lives on Poppasquash Point with his wife Betty, and moors his Bristol 40 Incognita nearby. Ruth Souto VICE COMMODORE Ruth joined the BYC as an Intermediate Member in 1984, and has been sailing ever since. She has been a member of the Executive Board for 10 years, serving 2 years each as Chair of the Membership, Grounds and Race Committees, then as Fleet Captain and Rear Commodore. Before serving on the Board, she spent a number of years as a contributing member of the Race, Regatta and Membership Committees, and served on various Nominating Committees (for the slate of officers), as well as actively racing in our Wednesday night series. When not sitting in committee meetings, Ruth can be found sailing her Sea Sprite Artemis. Kathi Lengel REAR COMMODORE For the last 14 years, Kathi has been an active BYC cruiser and volunteer instructor in the EBSF Adult Sailing program, as well as a contributor to the work of the Social, Waterfront, Grounds, and House Committees. She served as Chair of the Race Committee for two years, and as an At Large member of the Executive Board, editing the Mainsheet for several years. She and her husband Jim split their time between Vermont and Island Park where her summers are spent racing and cruising their yawl, Top Cat, often with their granddaughters. Chris Bjerregaard FLEET/CRUISE Growing up, my family owned a series of sailboats. Home base was Lake Michigan. We cruised for 2 or 3 weeks every summer: usually to the North Channel of Lake Huron. Beautiful. The core of the race crew was always family: my mom, dad, sister, & brothers. We still sail the same way on Shearwater. In 1987 I finished my degree in Engineering at Florida & moved to RI. Florida is too hot. I soon joined the BYC. I got involved with EBSF when my kids, Kate & Ted, were 5 & 7 & old enough to sail on their own. It s been fun to see them learn to sail & to help the program prosper. Kate is a coach now. As a member of the BYC Board, I hope to help organize more water based activity & make the BYC a fun destination. Bob Elder TREASURER Although Bob grew up in Barrington, he spent a good deal of time at the club in his youth with his 2 cousins who were members and active sailors. Their father, his Uncle Bob, was commodore in He and his wife, Cindy, joined the club after moving to Bristol from Massachusetts in 2004 with their daughters Emily and Elizabeth. They have since enjoyed making BYC the home port of their 38 Ericson Restless and making great friendships with other BYC members. Bob has been a member of the House Committee, a Member at Large and became Treasurer in He is also the managing partner of Elder, Gaffey & Paine, PC, a CPA firm located in Marlborough, MA which he founded in Roland Gendreau SECRETARY Roland Gendreau has been BYC Secretary since 2012 and a member of the Waterfront Committee since In real life, he is an engineer working for Schneider Electric where he is Director of Operations for their largest Research and Development group. He and his wife Janet relocated to Bristol RI in 2006 and enjoy sailing their Catalina 34 Gratitude.

3 Executive board David Schwartz PAST COMMODORE David has been a club member since He and his wife, Marti, joined the club so that they could race Mischief in the Millard Series. Originally not interested in the social side or in volunteering, David quickly got sucked into the BYC family and has been active ever since. He keeps in shape by chasing Marti who is chasing the dog who is chasing the cat who is chasing the chickens around their yard in Smithfield. Sharon DeLucca MEMBERSHIP Sharon DeLucca was born and raised in Philadelphia and moved to Bristol, RI in 1991 for a position at Roger Williams University where she created the major in Graphic Design. She is a tenured professor and has taught Graphic Design at RWU for 24 years. Her first experience with sailing was with her father on the Delaware River, on his Bristol 26, when she was a child. Her father s boat was designed by Halsey Herreshoff and built in Bristol. In 2007, Sharon and her husband, Paul Castaldi, purchased and restored a 1955 Concordia Yawl and named her Weatherly. They sail the southern New England region extensively in the summer and make regular trips to Nantucket. They have also participated in the BYC annual cruise. Sharon and Paul joined the BYC in Sharon has served on both the House and Membership committees for the past two years. She is excited and honored to serve as the new chair of the Membership Committee. Linda Silveira SOCIAL On their way to their honeymoon on Maui, Linda and her husband, Joe Murray, stumbled upon a C&C 41 for sale in a sailing magazine. Joe had raced on a C&C 41 years before and that model had always been his dream boat. With Linda s encouragement, Avenir was purchased. Avenir has led the Murrays on many great adventures, including 2 Newport to Bermuda races (Linda provisioned Avenir but took a shortcut on an airline to Bermuda). Since joining BYC in 2005, Linda has gained an unexpected wealth of knowledge about sailing. She works the mainsail every week in the Wednesday night series and is an active member having served, collectively, on the House, Grounds and Social Committees for 8 years. She also played an key role in building the children s playground. Now her daughter, Olivia, can enjoy the club just as much her mom! Leslee Lippman HOUSE Leslee has been a member of BYC for 20 years and served on Membership, House, Social and Grounds Committees. When she first joined the House committee in 2009, she was the only woman at the meeting. She happily prevailed in getting the gentlemen to walk in to view the ladies upstairs bathroom for considered renovations. Leslee has served on non-profit boards at all levels for over 35 years with influences in community services, theater, and the arts. Her professional experience over the last 15 years has been working within medical administration. Nick Cromwell EBSF / INSTRUCTIONAL Nick lives in Bristol with his wife, Cara, and daughters Maggie, age 13, and Caroline, age 11. Nick is a Commander in the Navy Reserve and an Engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1996 and was the Team Captain for the Varsity Sailing Team. He grew up in Louisiana and as a junior sailor Nick won the 1990 US Youth Championship, placed 2nd at the 1990 IYRU Youth Worlds and won the 1991 Laser II Worlds. Nick sails Lasers in the Bristol Frostbiting fleet and races locally on a J-22 with his family. He is also involved in regatta organization and team racing at Bristol Yacht Club. Tim Harrall JUNIOR ACTIVITIES Tim has been a BYC member since He, his wife Tamara and their 3 children enjoy cruising on their Catalina 30, Time Out. Tim also serves on the Board of the East Bay Sailing Foundation and his son Tyler is employed as a Sailing Assistant with EBSF. Tim and his family live in Barrington. Tim works out of his home (leaving more time for sailing!) and is the VP of Strategic Accounts for VRI, a healthcare company that provides in home patient monitoring solutions to the frail and chronically ill.

4 Executive board Meet Our 2016 Executive Board cont. Mark Rotsky RACE Mark Rotsky started sailing with his father when he was 10, racing Lightnings on the Hudson River. He eventually bought his own Lightning, (Per Kathy - That Troublemaker in the back yard ) and brought it with him when they moved from NJ to MA, but found nobody to race. He then bought a Pearson 26, naming her Troublemaker II. After nine years their family wanted to expand their range and racing level. He found a J/30, through a friend, that was lying derelict at Pirates Cove. They ve been enjoying Nemesis for the last 19 years. Mark has been on BYC Race Committees since joining the club in1987, served as Chairman in 2008 and hosted a J/30 North American Championships Regatta. He is looking forward to another term as RC Chairman for what promises to be one of the most active and exciting years of racing at BYC! Bill Toohey Waterfront Bill Toohey was born in Montreal, Canada, moved to the USA in October 1989 and carries a dual citizenship. Much of his career was with Reader s Digest where he worked both domestically and internationally in senior management and marketing roles. After leaving Reader s Digest he worked in the direct marketing industry. Bill s interests include sailing, woodworking, skiing, travel and technology. He and his wife Kathy joined Bristol Yacht Club in Bill has been the Chair of the Waterfront Committee for the past two seasons. Bill and Kathy have two adult children and live in Bristol, RI. Joe Whelan GROUNDS Joe Whelan and his wife Cathleen have been members of the club since Joe is a partner at Whelan Corrente Kinder & Siket, LLP, where he specializes in labor and employment law and business litigation. He has been active in the club and EBSF in a variety of ways, including serving on the ad hoc committee that negotiated an agreement with Bristol Marine over the expansion of its marina. Joe is a lifetime sailor and racer. He is active in distance racing, frostbiting and team racing and looks forward to the Newport to Bermuda race in June Notwithstanding the amount of racing he has done, his favorite time on a boat is playing cards with his wife and three daughters on a mooring in Cuttyhunk. Sarah O Neil MEMBER AT LARGE - MAINSHEET Sarah, her husband Bill and 2 young children have been BYC members since She has made numerous contributions to our club s events through serving on the Social Committee and taking on the Social Chair position for the last two seasons. Sarah is an experienced professional graphic artist by trade (formerly employed with Staples Advertising Agency & Hasbro Toys) and her new role of taking on the publishing & layout for our in-house Mainsheet will be a great fit! Chris Healey CHIEF STEWARD Chris Healey joined our staff in He grew up in Barrington and is an accomplished yachtsman. When not working, he spends time with Tristan, his son, and enjoys driving Rescue for the Bristol Fire Department.

5 race It is an honor to once again be your Race Committee Chairman. It is well known that Bristol Yacht Club has one of the best Senior Racing programs on Narragansett Bay. I firmly believe that the main reason for this is because almost 20 years ago, the dedicated on-the-water Race Committee was first established at the club allowing racers to focus on racing rather than trying to figure out where and when they were supposed to go. I m very lucky to have inherited a very experienced and enthusiastic group of committee members. They are the ones who really know the ropes and I will try to help them maintain their already high standards by providing the information, equipment, training, and anything necessary to allow the Race Committee to keep this fun and interesting for them, and efficient and fair for the racers. We already have plans coming together for a very busy and exciting 2016 season. Riding on the double Team Race victories in the Swanson Cup/Bay Race event, we now have the honor and obligation of running that regatta this year. MOHOSA will be back for the 28th year (Can you believe it?) and we are developing plans for a number of One-Design events throughout the season. More on that to follow. For those who just can t get enough racing, the Frostbite season is already underway with Lasers racing on Saturdays throughout most of the winter. If you want to get back on the water now, bring your Laser, dry suit, and life jacket, and be at the club early on Saturday. The racers will help you get registered and on the water to feed that racing appetite. In the meantime, stay warm, and have healthy, safe, and happy holidays. Mark Rotsky Race Chair commodore s QuARTERS A New Chapter... With this Mainsheet, we officially begin a new chapter at the Bristol Yacht Club. Let me first say that I am humbled by your support. It is a rare experience to be elected by one s peers to a position of importance such as the Commodore of this auspicious club. I thank you for your trust. The annual meeting was a great opportunity for us to collectively reflect on all that has been accomplished in the past two years. It was obvious that so much happened because of the dedication of countless club members. Your collective work to make this club the best it can be was apparent through the various committee and Flag officer reports. Your new Executive Committee is energized and committed, and I look forward to working with each of them. I am honored to be a part of the future of the Bristol Yacht Club. 6 RACE Frostbiting Frostbiting Season is Here! For most of us, recognition that the season has ended is punctuated by the hauling of the club floats. However, in fall, there is ONE float that is launched BYC Frostbite kicked off another season on November 7th with great participation from members and local sailors alike. We had an initial signup of twelve sailors, of which four were new participants; we anticipate even more will join us this season! For our first day on the water we had a NW wind of 5 10 with gusts to 15 (give or take a few knts). Sudden shifts and gusts surprised the fleet and a made for a busy day with the crash boat. Several sailors took a swim. I can only assume that the water was so pleasant that they just wanted to take a dip and this had nothing to do with having forgotten how to sail a dinghy over the summer. First and second places were captured by BYC members Nick Cromwell and Team Guck who sailed two up with Lars and his son Olin at the helm (two up is impressive for a Laser). After frostbiting, the bar is traditionally open for the appropriate amount of bragging, as well as the usual protest for room at the marks. The fleet has sufficient legal expertise in its ranks so the conversations can be quite entertaining. BYC members should take time this offseason to come down and have some fun - the entertainment of the fleet is equal both on and off the water, and Natalie can fix you a drink to make you feel cozy by the fireside. A special thanks goes to Joe Whelan who patched up the Frostbite float to keep Race Committee dry for yet another season. We will be putting together a work crew for a major overhaul of the float for the offseason, which most normal sailors refer to as summer. For updates on Frostbiting, visit the Club Facebook page at: Curt Mahlstedt Frostbite Fleet Captain
