1 DTM Photo A Seasonal Bulletin of The Masthead PIYC Website Volume 4 No. 1 Our Mission Statement- To promote activities, tourism, and a spirit of comradeship among boaters interested in the welfare & development of Lake Huron's beautiful Presque Isle Harbor. Words from Commodore Bob Young Hello 2014! In 90 days or so we'll meet for our first dinner meeting here in Presque Isle. (kind of hard to believe it from the looks of the scenery at this moment.) Trust me, it will come soon enough. Frozen in Time: Lighthouses in Michigan, captured by T. Zakowsky Winters could be worse, see below: My message in this winter edition of the masthead is to look forward to the summer and prepare yourself for a dandy time in NE Michigan when you return to your summer home or cottage. We are now connected rather well, so you can keep in contact with our group (face book, Skype, Twitter, this publication, or tune in to the radio stations (WATZ, True North Radio or others), or through other social media, or the online versions of local papers, such as the Alpena News (Alpenanews.com). For those that are looking for property for yourself or family, you're just a click away from Google mapping, Zillow real estate offerings, or Presque Isle Township happenings. The Grand Lake Association also has their publication of 2014 events ready to publish.. as does the Presque Isle Harbor Association. There's no excuse to not be "in the know". Gwen and Bob Mitchell are doing a fine job of keeping our group informed and tuned in to our group efforts. While all the aforementioned methods of communication allow for access to what's happening, it's ultimately up to you to "connect", or be involved. If you have an appetite to step up a bit and get a bit more involved in our group, we'd love to welcome your added touch to our many projects- Featured Stories Begin on page 2 Membership Dues & Information: Please see Page 6 Here are some- 1. Our bicycle fleet always needs some adjustments or repairs. 2. Gary and Peter could stand extra hands with our junior sailors and the training lessons. (moving boats, repairing, storage, etc.) (see next page for continuation)

2 Words from Commodore Cont d. Page 2 What is Protocol for Visiting Other Yacht Clubs 3. Organizing a nautical swap meet or sale. 4. Handling our PIYC clothing sales. 5. Assisting Barbara and Dean in their boater welcome kits. 6. Serve as a director. Members are busy and traveling through out the year, curiosity suggests one might think about visiting a local Yacht Club and there are opportunities to do so. The picture below shows Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on Lake St Clair: 7. Help with our dinner meeting agenda or location. 8. Assist in our internet or communication link at the harbor. 9. Boating projects.. or outings. 10. Work with the PI Antique Wooden Boat Show. 11. Got ideas for growth or support of the Presque Isle Harbor area that we can support? Let us know, and we'll consider it. There you go... some ideas for action or a possible project when you return to Presque Isle. Or something to work on now. So, if you're burning with desire to kick ideas around now, call one of your directors (or me) and we'll get it rolling. Otherwise, we'll just look forward to seeing you when things warm up a bit in April - - or later. Happy Winter, RY This particular facility is highly utilized with guest speakers during the business week, weddings on weekends and formal functions ongoing. While at a financial seminar the editors asked what protocol was if one wished to visit for dinner or business and were a member in good standing of another Yacht Club. The question was met with warm accommodations and they asked for an advance letter of introduction with the basic information about who wished to visit, how many were to be in the party, what the occasion was i.e. The Smith s were planning a cruise and wondered about a guest slip for their 40 foot Viking/ and dinner placement for 4 with an ETA of 4:30PM on a date two weeks away They thought it shouldn t be a problem unless a big function was taking place on the desired date/time frame; they asked that the letter be a function of the Yacht Club s Secretary or an officer/third party from the visiting Club. In other situations, such as when we visited Sausalito Yacht Club in California, just a membership card of identification was needed, failing to have one they invited us in as guests anyway and the Commodore spent some time explaining the history of the Club and invited us back when ever we were in the area. So the bottom line is each is different, we might think about membership cards in the future but those we have visited so far have been warm and welcoming. There is a registry of Yacht Clubs and more information may be gained by visiting the Register of American Yacht Clubs, There is a Reciprocity Guide as part ofthe Oldest Existing Yacht Club Register in America. Depending on the amount of input from members, the size may vary as needed. We welcome any comments, ideas, concerns, congratulations or complaints, but especially appreciated are pertinent articles or images that will be of interest to our members. The 2014 Grand Lake Youth Sailing Camp will be July 28-August 1, Last year we expanded the program to allow the kids who graduated from the beginners class the move onto the intermediate class that included th JY15 boats. The JY 15 boats are dual sails, bigger and faster. This is the introduction to real racing. Note for communications: We will be traveling out of State Feb April, 2014 so contact by or phone is critical! PIYC Mailing Address: Website: presqueisleyc.org Evergreen Rd (Bob Young) Presque Isle, MI We have added a little more excitement to the program by adding a catamaran to our fleet. If the more experienced sailor would like to test their skills this boat will be available. The Camp would like to thank Bob Young and Lucian Leone for donating boats for the program. Meeting Dates Nominally we meet on the 3rd Thursday of April through October, inclusive. There may be variations on the meeting locations; members will be advised of any changes in a timely manner. Presque Isle Yacht Club Membership and Dues / 2014 is a civic organization dedicated to the establishment and growth of a yachting community in Presque Isle Harbor Michigan. Annual dues are $100 with a one time burgee fee of $25. There is no initiation fee for membership. From time to time various clothing and nautical accessory items may be available at market prices. See page 6 for a membership application The club membership year is January 1st through December 31st. Applicants filing after September 1st are considered as having filed as of the following January 1st. The months between are free. Please send to Robin Spencer at his Winter Address shown on page 3 If the kids who graduate the intermediate sailing skills and would like to experience Lake Huron sailing out of Alpena there are the Yngling(?) sailboats. These boats can lead to international racing. The program would love to have a couple of the students become certified. They could then instruct the Kids in the Grand Lake Program. This is a great summer job and the rewards are many. The program is growing which takes students from the age of 8 years old to?? and can advance to international racing and/or become a certified instructor. The Grand Lake Regatta is August 2, 2014 and we would love to have a few of our studentss compete in the race. I will be sending out registration information and more on the program as the snow melts. If anyone has any questions I can be contacted at My address is US Hwy 23 South, Presque Isle, Mi telephone number is We need participation, so spread the word, plan your vacation, and enjoy Grand Lake!

5 Page 5 Before You Cast Off It's an old joke -- a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into. It's also true. Some 95 percent of owners have boats 26 feet or less at an average cost of 18 grand, according to Ellen Hopkins at the National Marine Manufacturers Association, and more than 80 percent of those buyers shelled out for pre-owned boats. The actual boat purchase is just a start, however. Bentley Collins of Sabre Yachts says to budget 10 percent of the boat's value annually to cover additional expenses. And then there are the extras. AMONG THE COSTS TO CONSIDER: Oil and gas Title, registration, insurance Maintenance (sail or power) Winter storage ( a new garage or rental) Safety gear (GPS, Communications, to name a few) Dock fees/pump out charges, licensing Accessories Several articles are available including one Jul 25, 2013 / By Julia Scott -really-cost-to-own-a-boat-0713/ Also, the Washington Post has a similar expose But Lets Not Just Pick on One Passion Boating may be what some consider an expensive passion Entertainment and Hobbies take all forms and without some distraction and escape from work There are a Fascinating array of passions one can enjoy but all not without cost How about Quilting Materials, Machinery, maintenance, inventory carrying costs, show fees, opportunities to enjoy similar interests with peers all over the U.S.! Golf Learn Fly Tying FOR SALE Several boats including a 14 ft Sailboat. This is an "Ace 14," as designed by Arch Davis of Maine, and built by the seller in Google "Arch Davis" and look at images of the Ace 14 on his website. The lucky buyer will enjoy a boat that is fast, responsive, and stable. Sail controls-(halliards, jib reef line, and sheets) lead into the cockpit. Centerboard operation is easy and well designed. The only deviation from Mr. Davis' plan is the substitution of a 1/4" thick steel centerboard for the specified wood c/b. Green fees, custom equipment, caddy tips, club surcharges, lost balls and playing the rough not to mention transportation to and from far away places Obviously there is no better hobby than water sports, but if you are interested in the costs of some hobbies we have mentioned or others, take a look at : There are dozens, perhaps hundreds of ways to catch fish. But none of them are as exciting as luring and hooking a sport fish on a fly that was tied by your own hands/ not to mention the tools you must have! Construction is of Okoume plywood on Mahogany frames; using the WEST system--(wood Epoxy Satuation Technique). This assures a long life with minimum maintenance. Only timely painting is needed. This boat is ready for the water with no maintenance requirements at this time. It is worth noting that the foredeck and quarterdeck are removable to allow access to these spaces as needed. One person can erect the mast and rig the boat. As noted earlier, this boat is equipped with a furling jib; there is no reason for anyone to be on the foredeck at any time.
