1 North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter October COMMODORE S REPORT Well, Fall is officially here! Time to start thinking about getting the boat ready for winter storage. Fall also means it s time to make plans to attend the club s Annual General Membership Meeting. This years meeting will be held on October 7 th at 2:00pm at the club. This is your chance to hear from the officers and committee chairs as to what s transpired at the club over the past year. We will also be electing new leaders for the coming year as well as two new members to the nominating committee. You should have received your packet of information several weeks ago, please be sure to read through it and come to the club on the 7 th. I would love to see a standing room only crowd. September was as usual a busy month around the club. We started with the traditional Labor Day Cruise and Commodore s Cocktail Party. The venue this year was beautiful downtown Annapolis. Kudos to Fleet Captain Suzanne Braun for a well organized and very well attended cruise. The weather was great and all those in attendance had a wonderful time. Birthday night on the 14 th was also well attended with a large group of UD students helping SCUD Commodore Bryan Whittington celebrate his 21 st birthday. The food, service, and entertainment were fabulous and I hear that the partying went on well into the evening. On September 22 nd, your membership committee chaired by Claudia Ferguson held the annual members picnic. Unfortunately I was unable to attend as I had to attend an anesthesia conference that day. However, my sources tell me that another stellar turnout was recorded and good times and great food were enjoyed by all. Thank you Claudia for all the hard work you and your committee put in to make this one of the more popular events here at the club. October seems to be shaping up nicely. In addition to our AGM, don t forget the Frostbite Cruise on the 13 th & 14 th, and to eliminate the conflict of having Birthday night that same weekend, it is being combined with our annual Halloween Party on October 20th. Keep your computers tuned to the Yahoo Groups for more information upcoming on all these events. Well, that s all I have for now. Again, I hope see everyone at the AGM on October 7 th. In the meantime enjoy what boating time we have remaining this season and above all else, boat safely! See you at the club. Commodore Russ Zehnacker

3 FROM THE VICE October? Where did our summer go? It s been a great year at NERYC. However, don t miss out on the opportunity to spend some of the remaining time left out on the water. As we all prepare for the end of the season, remember all of the friends and great times spent at NERYC. As our boating season end nears, so does our elected officers and committee chairs terms on the board. October is the time when we have our Annual General Meeting. All of our Board members give our annual reports to you, our members. As some members our leaving our board, new members are elected to replace them at this time. Be sure to attend and participate on October 7th. As Vice Commodore, one of my responsibilities is working with Bob Efford, the head of our Insurance Committee. Bob s in the process of reviewing and updating current insurance policy information for renewals next year. If any member knows an agent or company that should be considered to give us a quote, please contact me as soon as possible. One quick point, there are few sailing races left in our sailing season and even if you re not a sailor, hop aboard one of the many boats that needs crew. On Saturday mornings, I don t know how many times I ve heard the call for crew members. And here s something to remember if you don t know what to do on a racing sailboat, there s always room for rail meat! It s an fun and an experience you won t forget. FROM THE REAR In just a few weeks the club will go though it s annual changing of bridge officers and as a result I will become your new Vice Commodore. It will be strange for me as just a few months ago I was a happy go lucky sail program chair with a great committee taking care of things. Then one day I get a call and the next thing I knew, I was Rear Commodore. Now, about 3 months later, a few birthday nights and BOG meetings and I am about to take on my new role as Vice Commodore and tackle a new set of responsibilities. Well rest assured I am ready and intend to support our new commodore and my fellow BOG members in our quest to make NERYC the greatest & friendliest yacht club on the BAY. But before I move on let me tell you about our next big party at the club. We are going to hold the spookiest birthday night the club has ever seen on October 20 th. We will start the event off with a kid s party and finish the evening off with a rockin, wild and scary evening for the adults. This will be one you do not want to miss. There will be games, costume prizes, special scary dinner items and even a few laughs. Keep your eyes open for more news on this one and I will see you there. For this one time we will be combining our normal birthday night with the Halloween party so please make note on your calendars. Thanks R/C Rick Hanson Lastly, don t forget our Frostbite Cruise this month. This is always one of my favorites as the air is cool, the skies are clear and our Chili Cook Off is HOT! Be sure to attend the cruise on the 13th. If you can t take your boat, take your car. It s worth the trip! That s it for now, see you at the Club! Mark Coffman, Vice Commodore. V/C Mark Coffman 3

9 FROM THE FLEET Greetings NERYC members. The Labor Day Cruise to Annapolis Yacht Basin was a smashing success. We had 45 people on 14 boats and 2 cars! You can see that by the pictures in this issue. The highlight was the Commodore s Cocktail party on Sunday evening. Commodore Russ supplied a delicious Ham and all the fixings for this event and everyone brought their favorite dish to accompany it. Beer and wine was provided. There was carrot cake and live entertainment by KEITH AND FRIENDS Keith and Barb had everyone up on their feet dancing the entire evening. This cruise also included the Power Boater s Predicted Log Race. Susan & David Andrews won last year, so they directed the event this year. A start and finish was chosen for each type of racer. The racer then picked their speed and predicted the time to the minute that they thought they would arrive at the finish. The power boater, who came closest to their predicted time, won the race and will get their name engraved on the perpetual trophy. The trophy will reside with the winner for the year. The other participants who came closest to their time will get bragging rights and a great time at the Predicted Log Party. $20 per couple or $10 per single is collected for this party. I believe you can still get in on the fun. Just contact David Andrews at dabayhound@aol.com for info. The party, open to anyone, racer or non, will take place on Saturday, October 27 th at 4pm. PASS IN REVIEW, Saturday, September 29 th : We had 7 boats and one kayak sign up for this event which is amazing given that it was pulled together at the last minute and was not on our original calendar. Unfortunately, for the parade to go on, a minimum of 10 entrants is necessary. Next year, this event will be on the calendar from the start and will be scheduled for earlier in the season. However, the party MUST go on.and it DID! 40 members and guests gathered on D dock at 3pm, bringing food and beverages to share. The weather was overcast but pleasant, had a nice hint of fall in the air and we even had a Harvest Moon! A few of us were still around to close the restaurant at 10pm. I want to send a special thanks to Al Black, Dave Brzezowski and, of course, George Braun for all your help in making this Plan B a great success! The Frost Bite Cruise, the last cruise of the season - October 13th and 14 th -is on for Sassafras Harbor Marina. I am changing this up a bit this year and making this a VERY FAMILY FRIENDLY CRUISE! There will be pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, a scavenger hunt, kids cookie baking contest and pumpkin recipe contest in 3 categories; entrée, side dish, dessert. Lots of fun for all! Sassafras has a great facility for indoor activities so it should be a great time! There will be a $10 adult/$5 child event fee to cover beverages and supplies. Gather the kids and join us by boat or car! Contact me for reservations. Cruises are the best way to get to know your fellow members. The camaraderie on these events is extraordinary. George & I remember our first cruise fondly and have never looked back, joining many cruises since. The members of the NERYC are the best on the Bay, Power or Sail, so come on out and get to know us!!! See me on the dock on our 32 Islander, in slip A68 or me Braun53@verizon.net FROM MEMBERSHIP FC Suzanne Braun Thanks to All who attended the Membership Picnic. We had about 120 members and guests. It was wonderful to see so many families participating in the fun. We all had a great time. Lots of fabulous food, music, great kid s games and a very challenging scavenger hunt. The Dog show was the best ever (that s a quote from one of the young Roecker grandchildren). Even the weather was cooperative with ideal temperature, great wind for the sail race but moderating slightly for eating outside. No Blind Fold Dingy race this year as no one signed up. Maybe next year! The picnic ended with a great clap of thunder and a down pour. What a way to end summer and usher in autumn! The event was nearly cost neutral. This was because of the generosity of goods and time from so many of our members, particularly the Membership Committee. The 50/50 will go to the next member picnic fund. A very big thank you to all. This is what our Club is all about. Claudia Ferguson Membership Chair 9

17 FROM THE RACE COURSE From the Race Course Our fall sailing activities are in full swing at NERYC. Junior Sailing Our Junior sailors have continued to be quite active even though the return to school has cut down on the amount of time available for sailing. We ve had two club races on Sundays, with lots of Opti and Laser sailors participating. In addition, every Thursday afternoon after school, many of our Juniors have been participating in a sailing clinic from 4:00pm-6:30pm to continue to refine their racing and boat handling skills. On September 9th, 6 of our Opti sailors traveled to Corsica River Yacht Club and participated in the Pumpkin Patch regatta. All did well, and Iain Shand took top honors and won the regatta the first time an NERYC Opti sailor has taken first place in an away regatta. The final away regatta of the season is the Opti Mid Atlantic Championship at Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in New Jersey. Six of our Opti Sailors will be participating in the two-day event held on October 6th and 7th. Keelboat Racing The lackluster winds that have plagued our racing activities in August have been replaced with absolute blasting conditions almost every weekend in September. Many NERYC sailors headed down the bay to participate in Georgetown Racing Fleet s Bay Jam Invitational on September 8th, and were greeted by knot winds and 2 foot waves to contend with throughout the day, and a wild storm just after the race ended. Fortunately, everyone came through unscathed. Our own Club racing on September 15th and 22nd also experienced small craft advisory conditions, but fortunately, we re up the bay enough that the wave action was minimal. However, the strong winds kept all participants on alert, pushing a few boats to the edge with an occasional near knock-down. We have several sailing events in October, starting with the last of our Fall Series on October 13. On Sunday, October 21st, we ve got a not who you expect fun race scheduled, which will be an all-fleet race where the only criteria is that the skipper of the boat entered is not who usually is at the helm. So it s a great time to mix it up and have a member of the crew take the helm, or switch boats, or????. Use your imagination. Finally, on October 27, our final event of the season is the Pursuit Race for the Charlestown Cup. It will be an all-fleet event, and each boat is assigned a start time based on their PHRF rating, with the higher numbers starting first, and the lowest numbers starting last. It s a great event you don t want to miss it. University of Delaware Sailing Team The UD sailing team has been practicing and attending regattas on weekends, and on October 6 & 7, they will be hosting their Fall Regatta at NERYC. Teams from Drexel University, Kean University, Penn State, Ocean Community College and Rutgers University will be attending, in addition to UD of course. Teams will be arriving early in the morning, and the Skippers Meeting is scheduled for 9:00am. The first race will start between 9:30am and 10:00, and the race course will be right out in front of the club, so it should be very easy to spectate from the patio, or from the end of A dock. Each team has A fleet and B fleet sailors, and the crews will rotate amongst the boats off the end of A Dock. The restaurant will be open for lunch on Saturday, October 6th with a special lunch menu of soup, wraps, side salads & iced tea for $10 per person (tax & gratuity included). Cash bar will also be available. Racing will continue through the day until 3 or 4pm depending upon the weather conditions. It should be a very exciting event to watch, so come to the club and check it out if your schedule allows. Sail Awards Banquet November 10th Save the date November 10th 6:00pm. Our annual Sail Award Banquet is always a very fun event where we will be recognizing all participants and winners from the Spring, Thursday Night, and Fall Series racing, as well as our Junior sailing events. Keep an eye out for s and sign-up sheets for this in the near future. See you on the water! Mike Wagner Sail Race Chair 17

20 FROM THE KAYAKERS NE Kayakers, Sept Two out of three isn t bad! We had to cancel one planned trip on the Northeast River on Labor Day because of very iffy weather. In its place, 5 of us (including Frank making waves in his new Tsunami kayak) enjoyed an evening paddle up the NE River and Creek on Sept. 13 spectacular weather and an opportunity for some to see the back side of North East: e.g. a deep-water anchorage for a very large catamaran; a commercial fishery; the front of St Mary Ann s Church (how many of you knew that the main doors face the water because when the church was first built, many parishioners came to church by boat?); the old mill race; and, of course, the excitement of seeing the Rte. 7 bridge from the water! To calm down, we later joined spouses for dinner at the Club. This past Sunday (Sept. 23), 7 of our group returned to Perryville Park to kayak on Furnace Bay. What a difference a day makes! When we first went there in early Aug., we had a stiff breeze from the S and a rising tide, and we able to paddle quite a long way up Principio Creek at the head of the bay. On the 23 rd, we had an ebbing tide, a stiff breeze out of the W/NW and we ran out of water before we had even reached the Creek! We paddled over/through so much weed in Furnace Bay at low water that we thought we should rename our group The NE Weed Whackers or The NE Garden Club. Emerging from the bay, we took the opportunity to paddle into the Susquehanna along the shores of Perry Point towards Havre de Grace before the rising wind, chop and boat wake encouraged us to return to more sheltered waters. We then enjoyed our picnic lunch on a sunny park table/bench, before returning to North East on Rte. 7 to check out the old mansion house (1836) and office building of the Principio Iron Works ( ) which gave its name to Principio Creek (and Furnace Bay). Weather permitting, the group plans an outing on the Elk River from Chesapeake Isles beach on Sept. 29. David Ferguson Coordinator 20
