1 Summer 2012 Commodore s Letter Summer 2012 It was a busy Spring for the WSC, which included three club race Sundays with three races per day, the 48th annual Whiskeytown Regatta, and a fun sail/pot luck dinner at the end of June. (Okay, the social sail and pot luck was actually at the beginning of summer, but the temperatures felt like spring!) Our thanks to Mike Archibald for organizing the club racing, and to Nancy O Brien for once again being the Regatta Chairperson. Nothing happens unless someone volunteers to step up and do it, and we very much appreciate Nancy s and Mike s willingness to lead these efforts. Read on in the newsletter for write ups on the Regatta, the Spring Series and our pot luck dinner at the lake. It may be a sign of the times, but our club membership is down from last year by nearly 25%. We are going to be doing a mailing to those who were members in 2011 but have not joined in 2012, and hopefully in some cases it will be simply an oversight, they forgot to mail their check. We d ask for your help on this. If you know fellow sailors who either haven t renewed their membership, or who would like to join the club, please put on your sales hat and encourage them to join. With so many boats out at Brandy Creek and Oak Bottom, let s see if we can t we can t get more sailors interested in participating in and supporting our club. It may be early, but mark your calendars for November 16th. That Friday evening we will be having our annual dinner, membership meeting and awards presentation at the Riverview Golf & Country Club. This is the same venue as last year s dinner, which was enjoyed by all. The meal pricing is very reasonable, the food and the setting are great. Box Redding, Ca Whiskeytown Memorial Regatta 2012 Our club hosted and ran a very successful Regatta which was held over the weekend of May 26th and 27th. Fifty-six boats converged on Whiskeytown Lake from all over Northern California, Oregon and Nevada, and this year, happily, were met with good weather and fair winds. Nancy O Brien served as Regatta Chair and did a wonderful job. Jim and Chris Kelly once again provided their Catalina 250 as the Finish Line boat. Mike Archibald hand made the trophies, enough to give out 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies to eleven different fleets. Donna and Michael Moore towed the big silver RV out to the Lake on Friday for Regatta Headquarters, what would we have done without it? Friday, May 25th opened with skipper check in and NEWSLETTER Multi hulls added color to the weekend late registration at 3PM, followed by more checking in, and more late registrations, Saturday morning. 3 Whiskeytown Sailing Club News 3 Whiskeytown Memorial Regatta 2012 (cont.) in the Multihull fleet. New member Bob Fox was 2nd in the Weta fleet and Steve Fitch was 3rd in the Keel B fleet. In Keel A, Jake Cartwright was 1st, followed by Carl Strahle in 2nd. All the results can be found on our web site under the Memorial Regatta tab. Also, please check out the photographer s link to eight galleries of pictures of the regatta, which is on the Home page of our website. If your boat is in there, order a picture! We hope you saw coverage in the record Searchlight about the Regatta, and there was also a reporter from KRCR, Channel 7, out at the lake. We received nice coverage on the Saturday evening news! Wabbits head downwind who contributed their time to make the Regatta successful are as follow: Don Sheely, Bruce Gillette, Terry Evans, Viking Tom, Jim and Julie Farmer, Bud Cohen, Cathy Vevoda, Barbara Kelly, her sister-inlaw Jo, Donna Moore, Vicki Gilmore and Jim Samuels (our judges), Greg and Geline Kockrow, Carl Pierce and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Jim Milestone and Jim Richardson of the NPS, and the Boy Scouts of Troop 122 who cooked and served a great dinner Saturday night. Great job by all! The racing was competitive both days, as generally fair skies prevailed with reasonably constant winds. We did have the normal 180 degree shift on Saturday, along with no wind in the middle of the shift, but Sunday provided a steady wind from the dam all day long. 5 Whiskeytown Sailing Club News 5 April 15th. SPRING RACES By Mike Archibald Jake Cartwright and Don Sheely ran the barge. Mike Eichwald would have probably won all the races had he made the first race; we really do need to get some more center board boats to race with him. First place went to Carl Strahle, followed by Ray Proffitt in second and Mike Eichwald in third. Seven boats raced that day. May 6th. Mike Archibald and Don were on the barge. You all know what the wind is like on Whiskeytown, none then some and then oh boy here it comes and then there it goes. We had a lot of boats show up, some for the first time; it was good to see everyone there. The catamarans went really fast, what s new, been watching the AC 45 s on TV during the America s Cup World Series, too cool. The keel boats had a good fleet and had some close racing when the wind was cooperating. It was good to see Trig and his Day Sailer out. There were also some mechanical problems, but once again a good day to be on the lake. The winner was Jake Cartwright in first place with Mike Strahle in second and Bob Hepler in third. A great day with twelve boats racing. June 10th. Carl Strahle and Dan ran the barge. Don went for a ride on Mike s Hobie 16. Three races later Don s elbows were bloody and he was ready to be on the beach as was Mike. The wind seemed as though it was changing direction every 15 minutes and sometimes 180 degrees, it seemed. Mike Kelly just gets on the water with his Day Sailer and comes in 1st. like why not. Chris Strahle as usual is always fast, he just needs a longer course to get enough time on everybody else. And as usual Ray Proffitt is right up there. Mike Kelly was the champion that day in first place followed by Chris Strahle second and Ray Proffitt in third. Five boats competed. It was another good day to be on the lake. For the complete race results look on line on WSC web site and then events and then results for spring Handmade Sailboat Regatta/Pool Party Back by popular demand is the WSC s Handmade Sailboat Regatta, hosted by Donna and Michael Moore at their home. The racing venue will be their swimming pool, with steady breezes provided by electric, not hand made, fans. This social event is open to all Whiskeytown Sailing Club members, family, friends and guests. If you are not into boat building, come and hang out with other sailing enthusiasts! Hand made boats should be under 18 inches in length, and can be mono or multi hull. They can be made of any material (wood, string, garbage bags, duct tape, beer cans Styrofoam, plastic) and decorated any way you like. Boats do not require steering but must be powered by wind for one downwind leg. If you need help finding materials or ideas just let us know. Anything from Barbie boats to a walnut shell works, as long as it floats. Note: bringing a boat is not required, but recommended for maximum fun! There will be many prestigious awards fastest, slowest, first to sink, most beautiful, best craftsmanship, tackiest, most creative, etc. The event takes place on Friday, September 7th. Refreshments start at 5:30 PM, Skippers meeting at 6:00 and Dinner at 7:00. The Moore s are at Plateau Circle, Redding, Please RVSP by September 3rd to Michael and Donna at or dmoore@shasta.net. And please bring a side dish and a beverage of your choice. Michael and Donna could also use help with set up, clean up and award creation. Please call or to volunteer!

6 Whiskeytown Sailing Club News 6 Summer 2012 Fiasco/Potluck Saturday evening, June 30th, WSC members and guests gathered at the Lake for the first summer social event. At 4:30, eight boats headed from the starting buoy up to Mark 5, around Mark 2 and back to the start buoy. That was the general idea, but with very pleasant temperatures and a nice 6 knot breeze, many just kept on going, enjoying the evening sail. By 6:30, most boats were put away and the pot luck dinner was set up at the picnic tables. Fried chicken, multiple salads, and deviled eggs filled everyone up, so much so that the two Key Lime pies, the cheesecake and the carrot cake could not be polished off completely. They were not wasted, and the leftovers went home with several members who were not afraid of the extra calories. Our next Fiasco/Potluck is planned for Saturday evening, August 4th at 4:30. Come out and sail around some buoys and return for dinner at 6:30. Check the web site under summer events for details. Hope to see you there!
