United States Power Squadrons Come for the Education...Stay for the FriendsSN Mansfield YACHTSMAN We Are America s Boating Club July/August L 40 45' N Lo 82 30' W From the Wheelhouse Bridge This & That Commander Cdr Lynn Fortman, AP fortmanlynn@gmail.com It s good to get up each day and look around at all the beauty we have to appreciate, even if it means mowing the lawn twice in seven days or washing the boat again because of our visiting insect friends, the grass is really greener on our side and the fish do grow bigger with more food! Life is good. In that spirit of thankfulness, we are very thankful for Bob Schraedly, of Charles Mill Marina. For the second year in a row, he has offered his facility free of charge to the squadron for the Education Awards Cookout. If he could only have turned the heat up to about 70 degrees and the wind down to about 3kn we all would have stayed longer! It s also good to be thankful for the consideration of Mayor Steven Schag of Shelby, Mayor Timothy Theaker of Mansfield, and Mayor Duane Fishpaw of Ashland. These mayors recognized the importance of Safe Boating Week by providing proclamations at their May City Council Meetings to MPS in an effort to get the word out about wearing your safety jacket while boating. All three mayors and Bob Schraedly will be offered Honorary Membership to Mansfield Power Squadron for one year. They will receive our newsletter and will consequently be invited to all of our events for the year. We would be honored to have them attend a scheduled activity. Our squadron has also received information about two formal uniforms that are available to members. P/C Jim Curry s uniform (Continued on page 2) Executive Officer P/C Jay D. Wells, AP jepiper@3g4airport.com Educational Officer Lt/C Shirley J. Fort, SN johnfort@core.com Administrative Officer P/C Daniel A. Fortman, AP dfortman@eaglecrusher.com Secretary P/C Dennis J. 2 2 (Continued from page 1) has been donated by his widow, Joyce. P/C Butch Rothschild, SN would also like to make his uniform available to anyone interested in wearing the dress blues (Type A) at our formal gatherings. This is a very generous gift by Butch and Mrs. Curry considering the cost of these uniforms today. Thank you to both families for their consideration of MPS. Welcome also to our newest members that have completed their ABC training with Chan Stevens, SN: Tracy and Lori Rupert; Deborah and Preston Rumery WELCOME! Call anytime for information about an event that you might be interested in attending. CLASSES BEGIN IN AUGUST Just as you thought you were finished with one class another is ready to begin. That s what learning is all about as a member of MPS. Accomplished sailor Jim Jackson, SN, assisted by his wife Bobbye, P who may be able to be coaxed into sharing antidotes about her sailing experiences along the eastern seaboard with Jim, will be offering a class on SAILING beginning in August. If you are interested in learning more about this wind directed form of seamanship, please call and leave a message. Consider taking a course that challenges you to continue thinking and applying your knowledge to your everyday outings on your boat. We are currently scheduling two beginning classes at different venues for ABC (America s Boating Course) that will start this fall at both Pioneer Career and Technology Center and Madison High School. If you have a friend, neighbor, or family member that would like to learn more about the basics of boating, please call to register. Look for more information in the mailed materials that you will receive this summer from either of these school s adult education brochures. REMINDER: According to our By-laws, there is no scheduled membership or executive meeting for July at the Red Cross Building. Included with this newsletter is a new fundraising event that we are trying for with Applebees Restaurant in Mansfield. The proceeds from this event (15% of your total meal cost on a specific date) will be sent to MPS and go directly into our fund to maintain our classroom/meeting room at the Red Cross Building in Mansfield. Website: As we continue to try new ways to support the financial needs of MPS, I would ask that you contact me if you have knowledge of a person in any of the non-profit service organizations in the area to whom I could direct a request for support. This endeavor was very successful in the past, but so many of the contacts have changed. OR if you know of a business/facility that would be willing to donate classroom space to our organization, please let me know. In closing, it s going to continue to be a very busy but great summer. I wish you all safe adventures by whatever form of travel you choose, but especially, stay safe on the water. As our slogan goes, you join the power squadron for the education but you stay for the friends. As it would happen, one of our long time friends and past commander, Warren "Bear" Warner has had some surgery. He is up and around but if you are interested in sending well wishes to him or Lisa, their address is 2201 Huron Avery Rd. Huron Ohio The Mansfield Yachtsman is published every other month. The editor reserves the right to edit any articles submitted for size, clarity, spelling and grammar. The editor also reserves the right to omit any submitted article due to space limitations. Please submit articles either as a Word document or in the body of an . Send your articles and pictures to Irene Rodriguez at rrodrigues001@neo.rr.com Deadline for the Sept/Oct issue is August15

3 Rendezvous at the Huron Boat Basin John Fort, Sandy and Eric McWhorter Eugene and friends. There's nothing better than a tailgate before dinner Bob Pompei and the "rockin" band. A gathering of fun boaters.

4 Administrative Officer P/C Dan Fortman, AP Past and Future Events We ve had a busy start to the boating season. I hope that you can join us on some of our future activities if you weren t able to come to those that have been completed. Here s a quick summary of what we ve done and what you have to look forward to this summer. 11 May Education Awards Spring Cookout We had a supportive crowd for such a blustery, cold day in May, but great food and fellowship was shared. Congratulations to the winner of the Belliard Award, Joe Tobias, AP for his efforts in charting almost perfect course lines within Bowditch Bay. Junior Navigation instructor, Wayne Hammond, SN received the Milliken-Brewer Award for Teaching Excellence for his patience and diligence in explaining the laws of celestial navigation to four interested students. Welcome also to our two newest members, Deb Rumery and her son, Preston who attended the cookout as well as Tracy and Lori Rupert. 3 June Huron Boat Basin Dinner We enjoyed the company of 20 members at I-5 s on Saturday night and listened to a quiet Fleetwood Mac style band while at the restaurant. It was good to see our friends from Huron, P/C Warren Bear Warner and his wife, Lisa that were able to join us. 10 June Pleasant Hill Fishing Festival P/C Mike Siwek conducted multiple Vessel Safety Checks for interested boaters. We have been challenged by our Chief Commander of USPS, Louie Ojeda, SN, to increase our VSC by 10% for this year. Thanks to Mike and his efforts at the Pleasant Hill Fishing Festival, we are closer to our goal for this year! FUTURE EVENTS FOR MANSFIELD POWER SQUADRON (Contact dfortman@eaglecrusher.com with questions or leave a message at ) Yachtsman as well as your Roster and Applebees will donate 15% of your total meal to MPS. Takeout meals are accepted also. Saturday 22 July Members of the Mansfield Power Squadron are invited to explore downtown Marblehead. We will start the day with brunch and then proceed to the peninsula where we can enjoy the local nautical shops. A visit to the Red Fern Winery is planned for early afternoon and dinner will be held at 6:00 at The Woods Restaurant. For those members desiring a more rigorous challenge, kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming are also available at Bay Point with prior reservations. For more information about the tentative times for each event and to make brunch/dinner, contact Dan Fortman at or your intentions to dfortman@eaglecrusher.com. 4-6 August D/7 Middle Bass Rendezvous Mardi Gras and Sailboat Race Come to the Mardi Gras Festival that will be hosted by D/7. Commander Jane Brandenstein, SN invites us to come and share in the Mardi Gras games, Hurricanes, and wine tasting (byob) at the Middle Bass Island Yacht Club Tent on Friday night. Saturday is breakfast at Walleyes and with the Sailboat Race later in the day and a Bourbon Street Pig Roast for dinner following Cdr. Brandenstein s Cocktail Party again at the Middle Bass Yacht Club Tent. Awards will be given for the best Mardi Gras Costume at dinner on Saturday night. Sunday is another breakfast and you re on your way home with only fun memories of your fellow D/7 boaters. Exact details are located on two pages of this Yachtsman. Monday 21 August Geodetic Marker Search in Ashland and Dinner (Tentative date-specific information will be included with your postcard reminder for August.) Join us as we explore the area of Ashland County for geodetic markers. According to the USPS websites, these marks are highly accurate reference points established on the surface of the earth by local, state, and national agencies. Maintenance and preservation of these marks is of utmost importance to users of the net and to NGSD, recognizing that many valuable geodetic marks are destroyed by construction, new roads, erosion, or for other causes. Our job is to locate each of these marks and report their condition together with any change in the directions needed to locate them. Tuesday 18 July This is the kickoff day to our first Applebees fundraiser. Stop by the Applebees on Lexington-Springmill Road between the hours of 11:00-9:00 and bring your friends and family. Show the server your Fundraiser Flyer that is located in this

5 YACHTSMAN BOOSTERS Donations List Growing A heartfelt thank you is going out today to the following individuals who have contributed to MPS through their generous monetary donations in the past. Rodney and Paula Allen Bethany Biddle Milo and Kim Breitinger Robert Campbell Dan and Lynn Fortman Daniel Fugazzi- Hylant Insurance Bob and Georgi Mathews Mark Pettitt- Preferred Services Rudy and Phyllis Weiss Cloyd and Mary Ann McNaull Mike and Kim Siwek Tom and Ruth Etzwiler Richard Peoples The Yachtsman is our main means of communication with all members. Please consider becoming a booster for ten or twenty dollars a year. Send your contribution to: P/R/C Thomas Etzwiler, SN ; 2581 Millsboro Rd. E. Mansfield, Ohio From the Education Officer Education Awards Lt/C Shirley Fort, SN In years past, nominating recipients for Mansfield's education awards was easy. The SEO might count the number of courses taken or students taught. A high test score could be the determining factor. Occasionally there is a special circumstance, like the year John Fort taught Engine Maintenance for women only (note: we all passed!) Someone usually stands out. This year names of instructors and students could have been drawn from a hat like raffle tickets. Everyone deserved the nomination. Test scores were no help. The lowest score was 95% and the highest was 97%, a reflection of both quality instruction and superior scholarship and certainly not a significant statistical difference. The quandary was which ONE to choose. The Millikin-Brewer Award for Teaching Excellence was presented to Wayne Hammond, SN for his ability to communicate his enthusiasm and knowledge of celestial navigation, for his willingness to tutor, explain, and re-explain difficult concepts, and for his encouragement, support, and reminders (nagging?) to keep his students on track. The Belliard Award for Educational Achievement was presented to Joe Tobias, AP. Joe has progressed steadily from ABC through Seamanship, Piloting, and Advanced Piloting. His wife, Judy, says, "He studies all the time." Not content with doing all the assigned cruise/plotting exercises, Joe created additional imaginary cruises that will be used in ABC classes. Joe is hooked on boating education and he doesn't even have a boat (yet)! The enthusiasm and talent recognized by these awards demonstrate the strength and worth of the education leg of the MPS triangle: Education, Safety, Fellowship. Boat smart, boat safe, boat fun. We invite you to sample all sides of the triangle.

6 From the Safety Officer P/C Daniel Fortman, AP LET S NOT BE FUELISH How many explosions have you had on your boat the last time you took her out of the slip? None? Well, if you had an internal combustion engine, you had thousands of explosions within a few feet of you and your passengers. And if these explosions involved gasoline, you can be grateful that each of them occurred in a controlled atmosphere like the inside of your engine s cylinders. Each year, people on or near boats suffer painful and debilitating burns or even death from fuel vapor ignition in and uncontrolled environment. Vapors from leaking fuel lines, corroded fuel tanks or poor ventilation skulk in the low areas of your boat, and create one of the most feared hazards of all. It s a molecular chain reaction, and its sudden, chaotic.and devastating. The next time you are filling up at the gas tank, take a look around you and observe what your fellow boaters are doing. You may be shocked. Unsafe practices are everywhere. I recently saw a well intentioned person using a plug-in shop vacuum while the boat was being fueled. An electrical spark from that alone could have been dramatic. With proper safety procedures and precautions, uncontrolled explosions on board your boat are nearly always preventable. Just remember these equipment and fueling tips: Have your fuel lines inspected regularly. Look for loose fittings or cracks in the lines, and if you see a problem, fix it. If you use portable fuel tanks, check them for corrosion or pitting. Make sure the vents work properly, and that there is a vapor-proof cap on the tank. If your tanks are permanently mounted, have them inspected annually. Be certain they are vented to the outside of the hull, and that fill pipes are outboard so that spills will not end up in closed compartments. If you have a boatload of people, and they re not all needed for the fueling process, suggest that they leave the boat and go browse in the Marina gift shop. The fewer people around when you are fueling the better. Please remind those remaining behind not to smoke. Shut off all of your engines, electric motors and galley stoves, and close all compartments, ports, windows and hatches. The idea is to keep the vapors out of those areas when you start fueling. Make sure a fire extinguisher is readily available. Try not to spill fuel on, in or around the boat. In fact, don t spill fuel anywhere. Hold the fill nozzle against the metal side of the fuel filler pipe. The filler pipe is grounded which will help prevent sparks from static electricity. Tightly replace the filler caps. Clean any spills that you were not supposed to have and properly dispose of the rags that you used to clean the mess. Now you are ready to open the hatches, ports and compartments that you closed earlier. Before you turn on your ventilation blower in the bilge, do one final check for fumes by using your nose. If you smell gasoline vapors, you re not ready to flip switches. Find where the fumes are coming from and resolve it. When it comes to gasoline, it is always better to keep the explosions inside the engine. So don t be fuel hardy and take the few extra minutes to do it right. It could make the difference between a disaster and another fun day on the water.

7 United States Coast Guard Headquarters Inspections and Compliance Directorate Washington, DC May 12, 2017 Safety Alert Whether at Work or at Play Remember it s a Shared Waterway. Know the Navigation Rules and enjoy your day! This Safety Alert reminds all operators of power-driven, sail, and human propelled vessels of the importance of maintaining a sharp look-out while on a shared waterway and recommends that all recreational boaters carry a DSC-VHF marine radio in order to communicate with other vessels. Recently a catamaran type passenger ferry collided with a group of kayakers on a busy metropolitan waterway. The incident occurred during late afternoon while the sun was low on the horizon with an angle of about 15 degrees and the ferry was heading westerly into the sun s glare. The ferry had just begun its voyage and was operating at about 20 knots across the waterway while a group of kayakers was ahead of the ferry and heading south. The low angle of the sun created significant glare on the water, obstructing the ferry operator s view of the kayakers who were within the reflected light. The kayakers did not have a DSC-VHF marine radio with them and they were unable to hail the ferry. The ferry subsequently collided with multiple kayaks resulting in two serious injuries. It is critical that all mariners, including recreational boaters, have a good working knowledge of the Navigation Rules before venturing out into a shared waterway. Commercial and recreational vessel operators need to know their responsibilities including the Steering and Sailing Rules, Conduct of Vessels in Sight of One Another, and Conduct of Vessels in Restricted Visibility. They also need to recognize the nautical lights and shapes and understand the sound and light signals that may be encountered in order to take appropriate actions to prevent collisions. It is also critical that recreational boaters are able to communicate with all other vessels. If unsure of another vessel s intentions boaters need the ability to contact the other vessel on the radio in order to indicate their location and ask such questions as Do you see me? and What are your intentions?. For more information on navigation rules and maritime communications please visit the USCG Navigation Center Website. Operators of marinas and rental facilities are encouraged to develop guidelines for safety briefings, required safety equipment and for outfitting guides and renters with maritime communication devices. For more information please visit RentalBoatSafety.com. There are many safety topics important to paddlesport enthusiasts. Depending upon where you plan to paddle, the required skill sets may be minimal or they can be highly technical in nature. Persons new to paddlesports will benefit from taking a paddlesports safety course and the knowledge gained will increase their enjoyment on the water. An example of a free online course is located at boaterexam.com. Training is also available from the American Canoe Association (ACA) and United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Coast Guard strongly recommends that all paddlesport enthusiasts participate in boating safety education as well as taking paddlecraft specific skills training. Additionally, the following best practices should be considered every time before going out on the water: Always wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket Make yourself be seen (bright / contrasting clothing) Carry a sound producing device such as a whistle Carry a DCS-VHF radio Know your paddling limits Know the area where you will be operating (Continued on page 8)

8 (Continued from page 7) Avoid paddling in main channels of busy waterways when possible Dress appropriately for the water temperature and forecasted weather Don t paddle alone Tell a friend where you are going and when you will return - file a float plan. If you plan to be out after dark, you will be required to exhibit an all-round light or have a flashlight readily available Don t drink alcohol and operate a boat or paddlecraft The free Coast Guard Mobile App includes many resources including a function to file a float plan. Online information on Shared Waterways is available at TheSafeHarbors.us This Safety Alert is provided for informational purposes only and does not relieve any domestic or international safety, operational or material requirement. 12 10 Applebee s Fundraiser It s never easy to part with our hard earned money. However, to keep our classroom facility intact as well as purchase teacher materials and supplies, it is important that we have a yearly fundraiser to help offset the cost of doing business as Mansfield Power Squadron. Last year, members were asked to help by donating to our classroom fund and I wish to again thank the people whose names appear in the Yachtsman for their support. In addition to donations, this year we are trying a new endeavor with Applebees Restaurant. One midweek day of each month beginning in July, MPS will earn 15% of your total purchase from the Mansfield location of Applebees Restaurant located at Lexington-Springmill Road across from Lowes anytime between 11:00 am and 9:00 pm. Your only responsibility is to inform your server by presenting your Applebees Fundraiser Reminder Form to her when ordering. Within three weeks, we will receive our 15% that will go directly into the Classroom Fund. Again, your responsibility is to eat, drink, pay your bill and 15% goes to MPS! No heavy lifting, no ordering of food supplies that may or may not be sold, and no long hours of preparation or clean up. It s all done by the staff and we reap the 15% of your total sale whether you eat in or take out. It fits everyone s busy schedule. So your responsibility is simple. You know you ll be eating out at least once during the month, plan to make it Applebees, bring one example of your Fundraiser Reminder Form located in this roster, call your friends from MPS to meet you at a certain time and enjoy! Remember we are, America s Boating Club, and we came for the education, but we stayed for the friends. See you at dinner!
