1 United States Power Squadrons Come for the Education...Stay for the FriendsSN Mansfield YACHTSMAN We Are America s Boating Club September/October L 40 45' N Lo 82 30' W From the Wheelhouse Bridge This & That What a beautiful summer we have had this year. Unlike last year when it appeared to rain every weekend, the weather seems to be cooperating and we ve had some great boating days for cruises and day trips alike. I hope that you have had a chance to get out and enjoy boating. The first point that I would like to make in this newsletter is that we have rescheduled the tentative date that was given on our Calendar of Events for the Geodetic Marker Search. It just happens to be the same day as our upcoming Solar Eclipse. Who knew? Not that we would be without sun for a long duration or that we will be able to experience a total eclipse in Ohio, but just in case you were planning to witness this historic meteorological event rather than participate in our Geodetic Marker Search, I wanted to be sure that you had the opportunity. The rescheduled date for our Geodetic Marker Search is Tuesday, September 12 at We will begin at the Ashland Airport and continue until we re tired or we run out of markers.. either way, lunch will be at Bella Bleu. Call by September 11 if you plan to come for the experience of learning a new skill or the fellowship at lunch. Speaking of lunch, our first fundraiser at Applebees was a success! We were awarded 15% of the squadron members total purchase of food and beverages on July 18 and that (Continued on page 2) Commander Cdr Lynn Fortman, AP fortmanlynn@gmail.com Executive Officer P/C Jay D. Your next chance to help support the squadron financially will be on Wednesday, August 23 from 11:00-9:00 at the Lexington-Springmill venue of Applebees restaurant. Please remember to give your server the flyer included with this Yachtsman. Make some extras and share them with your family and friends. One of the two flyers in this Yachtsman reflects the event in September. Save it please. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to schedule more than one event at a time so as September begins, I will send you all an with this information as well as an attachment for the flyer. Remember that additional flyers were included in your Roster. We will have a table reserved at 4:30 on August 23 at the back of the restaurant for anyone that would like to join us for dinner. conference food cost and have tried to accommodate for those that may not be able to attend the entire weekend. Individual meals prices are being planned for this event. We hope that you can come. We will again be joining our friends from Berea in their Hospitality Room. Next newsletter, I will update you about the changes that are being considered at the September Governing Board Meeting which will take place in Dallas this year. It seems so far away but by the next newsletter we will all be getting our boats ready for haul out! Until then, have a safe time on and off the water. Also included in this newsletter is a letter from our District Commander, Jane Brandenstein, SN regarding our Fall Conference in Pittsburgh on 3-5 November. Hotel reservations are due by October 6. The conference is being held at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott Hotel and reservations for the conference are due by 25 October. The district has been listening to the issues that you have brought forward regarding The Mansfield Yachtsman is published every other month. 3 3 Administrative Officer P/C Dan Fortman, AP Past and Future Events What a great weekend we had at the D/7 Rendezvous at Middle Bass Island. Although some of us tried to come over on Friday morning, we missed the window of opportunity (and low waves) by about two hours. When we were finally ready to go, the storm hit, so we went to lunch. The winds died down but with white caps on Sandusky Bay and waves splashing over the seawall, as well as a small craft advisory being issued, we stay docked for the day. Never a dull moment when you re on the water! It was good to see some of our members dressed for the Mardi Gras Themed Pig Roast on Saturday night. Also good to have our friends that were in England for three months make it back in time for the weekend. There are many activities still planned for Mansfield Power Squadron members in our final months before we put our boats away in November. 23 August Wednesday from 11:00-9:00 Applebees fundraiser for the Classroom Fund 12 September Tuesday at 9:00 am We will meet at the Ashland Airport for our rescheduled Geodetic Marker Search. Please call by Monday, 11 September to let us know if you are coming to search or to dine at Bella Bleu for lunch. That evening at 7:30 will be our Executive/ Membership Meeting at the classroom Red Cross Building. 19 September Class begins for Celestial Navigation and ABC class for new students at Pioneer 20 September Class begins for new students taking ABC at 21 September Thursday Fall Equinox Covered Dish at Mansfield South Pavilion at Join us as we say goodbye to summer. Bring a covered dish to share, your cutlery/plates, beverage and a comfortable chair if you prefer not sitting at a picnic table.?? September Applebees Fundraiser for the Classroom Fund ( to be schedule after our August 23 date for sometime within the month of September if possible) 10 October Tuesday is our Executive/Membership meeting at the classroom Red Cross Building where we will Pass the Hat for the Mansfield Food Pantry. 26 October Thursday Halloween Party at Fortman Home- I will try to schedule our Applebees Fundraiser for this same day. Halloween Party will begin at 7:00. Call Dan if you are planning to attend. Executive Officer Lt/C Jay Wells, AP Where Did Summer Go? Where did the summer season go? It seems I just got the boat in the water, and should be ready to go fishing, and then I realize school is ready to start, and band camp already has started. I guess days go by faster as we grow older. The summer Power Squadron events seem to have gone by quickly also. The D7 rendezvous has occurred. The weather wasn t real agreeable, but I hear a good time was had by all attending. Coming up soon will be the Governing Board meeting held in Dallas, Texas September The next event will be preparing our boats for winter (UGH) storage, just before D7 Fall Conference, hosted by Pittsburgh Power Squadron at Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, November 3-5. This might be your chance to attend a district conference, and learn how our organization operates, and how much fun you can have at one of these events. All the information is available at USPS D7 web site. Our District exec officer has sent an informational request seeking our members thoughts about D7 rendezvous ideas. He is asking for the membership s ideas on what type of rendezvous you would like to see. If you have attended any of these events, what would you like to see done differently. Is the cost too much for a full weekend event, or would you like to see a one day event. Also would like to see it be accessible by auto as well as boat for those who no longer have a boat that is easy to stay overnight aboard. Also might a different month be better. June, July or August. He is seeking information and thoughts about these items just as a planning guide for future events. Think about these items, and if you have some suggestions, you can contact Jim Holcepl at (Holcerpl.jim1@gmail.com). I m sure he would appreciate your input. He is trying to come up with ideas to make things more accessible, and make it easier for more families to attend these events. Everyone s input is appreciated. I hope you enjoy the remainder of the boating season, and maybe it will slow down so winter won t be here before we are ready. Be safe. Have fun and stay safe.

Please consider becoming a booster for ten or twenty dollars a year. Send your contribution to: P/R/C Thomas Etzwiler, SN ; 2581 Millsboro Rd. E. Mansfield, Ohio From the Education Officer Someday is not a Day of the Week You may recall my frequent references to someday happening in my life. Someday came when I sailed across the Gulf, around Florida, and on to the Bahamas. Someday happened on multiple cruises to Lake Huron, to the Trent Severn, and to Chesapeake Bay. Someday came because I was in the right place, at the right time, with the right set of skills; skills I had never expected to use very much but which I found interesting and enjoyable just for fun. But on passing a church roadside sign recently I was reminded SOMEDAY IS NOT A DAY OF THE WEEK. So are you also waiting for someday to come into your life? Do you have the skills you need to make it happen? Don t miss out on a great adventure through procrastination and lack of preparation. The squadron is setting up fall boating classes now. Spend those long winter days preparing for another summer of boating fun. Pick a class, any class, and we will do our best to make it happen Today, not Someday. Class schedule: Lt/C Shirley Fort, SN * Sail on Wednesday evenings. * Celestial Navigation on Tuesday evenings. * Safe Boating Classes for the Public begin September 19 at Pioneer Joint Vocational School and September 20 at Madison Comprehensive High School. * Other classes scheduled by request. Call for information or to register.

5 5 From the Safety Officer P/C Daniel Fortman, AP Interesting Facts That We May Have All Forgotten Education can be fun. Most of us have spent a lifetime trying to learn all that we need to know to survive in the world. Lynn and I have just completed our exam portion of the JN class and we can both admit that there was much to learn about navigation and trying to use this learned knowledge in test form was very humbling. Our goal is to be better educated, and to be better and safer boaters. On the other hand, at times we just want to be smarter than a 5 th grader. We also know that as we age, we forget things. I recently ran across an article in Boating Magazine that was written by David Seidman. He humorously points out a number of things that both you and I should know, as well as that troublesome 5 th grader. Global Warming To have some fun with global warming, let say that you decide to cool down Nevada s Lake Mead and airlift in one of the many ice flows that have broken free from Antarctica. After the ice is lowered in, you tie your boat to a pier and wonder if you ll have to adjust the lines as the big iceberg melts. Will the lake s level go up, down, or stay the same? Most kids will say that it will go up. To illustrate this, put an ice cube in a glass and fill the glass to the brim. Most folks will bet on the glass overflowing as the ice cube melts. It won t. If anything, the level will fall slightly as air trapped in the ice is released when it melts. Wake displacement A tugboat pushes a huge bow wave in the harbor at 14 mph while a duck paddles serenely across the pond at one half mile per hour and the young neighbor flies by at 30 mph in his new jet boat. Now, pretend that you are in a helicopter looking directly down at each of the above with a gadget that lets you measure the precise angles of their wakes. Which angle will be the greatest? Well, it s no contest at all they re all the same. Back in 1887, the physicist William Thompson (soon to be Lord Kelvin) went through some torturous computations to discover that the angles made by each arm of a wake s V to the displacement hull s centerline are always degrees. Speed doesn t matter, whether it s a duck or a speed boat. Of course, with a planing hull, all the rules change. Volt Revolt You turn on your bilge pump and hear it go to work. But when most of the water is gone, you notice something odd: The faster the pump runs, the less current it draws. Could bilge pumps be the answer to the world s energy problem? Not likely. The more work a pump s motor has to do, the slower it turns and the greater the current draw. Conversely, as the pump s load decreases, it turns faster and draws less. But there s something else going on called back EMF (electromotive force). The pump s motor acts like a generator. As it spins, it creates voltage that opposes the incoming voltage. The faster it spins, the more voltage goes out, lowering overall voltage at the motor as well as the current flowing into it. Maybe you got all of this right and maybe you are smarter than a 5 th grader. If so, you did better than I. Of course this means that I won t see many of you next year as I will be back in remedial class learning all that I can about boating and navigation.

10 10 Applebee s Fundraiser It s never easy to part with our hard earned money. However, to keep our classroom facility intact as well as purchase teacher materials and supplies, it is important that we have a yearly fundraiser to help offset the cost of doing business as Mansfield Power Squadron. Last year, members were asked to help by donating to our classroom fund and I wish to again thank the people whose names appear in the Yachtsman for their support. In addition to donations, this year we are trying a new endeavor with Applebees Restaurant. One midweek day of each month beginning in July, MPS will earn 15% of your total purchase from the Mansfield location of Applebees Restaurant located at Lexington-Springmill Road across from Lowes anytime between 11:00 am and 9:00 pm. Your only responsibility is to inform your server by presenting your Applebees Fundraiser Reminder Form to her when ordering. Within three weeks, we will receive our 15% that will go directly into the Classroom Fund. Again, your responsibility is to eat, drink, pay your bill and 15% goes to MPS! No heavy lifting, no ordering of food supplies that may or may not be sold, and no long hours of preparation or clean up. It s all done by the staff and we reap the 15% of your total sale whether you eat in or take out. It fits everyone s busy schedule. So your responsibility is simple. You know you ll be eating out at least once during the month, plan to make it Applebees, bring one example of your Fundraiser Reminder Form located in this roster, call your friends from MPS to meet you at a certain time and enjoy! Remember we are, America s Boating Club, and we came for the education, but we stayed for the friends. See you at dinner!
