1 United States Power Squadrons Come for the Education...Stay for the Friends SN Mansfield YACHTSMAN July/August L 40 45' N Lo 82 30' W 2016 From the Wheelhouse Cdr Lynn Fortman, AP Welcome summer! What a great time to be a boater as the season begins to offer us a glorious mix of sun, wind and an occasional thunderstorm. With those conditions in mind, I would like to remind all of our members to check your local weather report before heading out, especially on Lake Erie, where the sun can be shining on your left shoulder and a rain cloud could be hanging on your right. Our phones offer us a wide range of applications for this as well as our boat s radios. Be safe, by checking before you leave your dock. Thank you to all members that have submitted updated personal information for the MPS Roster. Let me know anytime that you have moved, changed your phone numbers or even better, added a new boat to the Fleet List! A copulation of this information is currently underway. At our District Meeting this spring, we were notified that information regarding member hospitalizations or the passing of a fellow power squadron member, spouse or child, could be disseminated through the District s Sunshine Committee. If you would like to share this type of information with District 7 members, please call or the Sunshine Chair, P/C Susan Harris at H: , C: , or susanharris48@gmail.com. 2 2 Executive Officer Attend Events Hello from the Executive office. Lt/C Jay Wells, AP We seem to have finally arrived at some warmer, more summer like weather. Much better for our boating activities. It also is a time for us to be reminded about some of the activities coming up in our boating future. D7 has several activities that may interest you. The first event which might interest you is the Tall Ships that will be coming to Fairport Harbor July It is a long travel for a lake voyage, but if you trailer your boat, you could go by land and launch in the harbor to join the activities. They are also exciting and interesting to just go tour them and imagine how the old time sailors lived and traveled on these beautiful sailing vessels. I toured some of the tall ships in Florida this winter, and it was very interesting talking to the crew about how they handle so different from today s vessels. The next exciting event will be South of the Border; Down Huron Way, which is the D7 summer rendezvous to be held at the Huron boat basin on July Please call Doug Steinwart, marina manager at for details and dockage reservations. Unfortunately I will not be able to join you for the fun due to a previous commitment. On August the USPS National Governing Board will be meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa. Contact one of the Bridge Officers if interested in attending. I also would like to mention a D7 service that is available to all. D7 has a Sunshine committee that is available. If you know of an illness or death or anything that would warrant a note or card from USPS, you can contact P/C Susan Harris at or susanharris48@gmail.com with the information of what has happened, who to send a card to with the address, and she will respond. Have a safe boating season, and hope to see you at one of the events soon. Pleasant Hill Fishing Festival The Mansfield Yachtsman is published every other month. 3 3 From the Education Officer Lt/C Shirley Fort, SN Refresh Your Skills - Take a Course Education Awards Picnic It is really hard to think about September classes when summer has just begun. We'd prefer to be fishing, bobbing on the waves, plotting a pretend predictive log, running speed curves, or just plain loafing in the sun. But teachers have gone back to school for continuing education. Principals and boards of education are reviewing program standards and ordering supplies. Your squadron education department is looking forward to a new season of classes, too. Good Food, Good Friends Teacher of the Year, P/D/C Mike Siwek, SN For our newer members (or those who would like a refresher course) Piloting is on the schedule for September, followed by Seamanship and Advanced Piloting in January. We also will offer Marine Electronics in September. With all the electronic gizmos on our boats these days, this course should be high on your priority list. Recent graduates of the Advanced Piloting class have asked to continue with Junior Navigation. With that in mind, we suggest our members with a grade of JN or N audit the class with the "newbies." I would guess that none, or at least not many, of us that so proudly claim to be navigators remember much more than Orion and the Big Dipper. I certainly fall into that category and I look forward to dusting off my brain and my sextant. Please call me or pop an to register for these or other classes. We will order materials and schedule classrooms according to your interest and time commitments. Meantime-- go float! Student of the Year, Denise Tenison
4 4 Administrative Officer P/C Dan Fortman, AP Effective Teamwork can help an organization meet its objectives. Teamwork can be defined as an art. The key elements in the art of working together are how to deal with change, how to deal with conflict and how to reach our potential. The needs of the team are best met when we meet the needs of the individual persons. Time spent in this process is important as team members need to get to know each other and to learn to know, trust and respect their team mate. We must be persistent. Cohesive functional teams cannot be developed overnight. Our MPS is a team in many ways. We have goals that include teaching and helping others keep themselves and their family safe. We like to have fun, and isn t that what boating is all about? So as MPS members, please don t be shy about volunteering and helping where you are able. We all benefit, in many ways, from your efforts. Our Education Awards Cook-Out was a huge success. The weather cooperated well and we had a fun time with over 30 participants eating hot dogs and delicious food, compliments of the many covered dishes donated by our members. The Charles Mill Marina was gracious and donated space and gas grills for our evening. Bring your boat or stay at a local hotel. You can make your dock reservations by calling the Huron Marina. It is time to make plans to attend our Rendezvous at Anchor s Away Marina on 5-7 August. We have docks reserved in the Mansfield Power Squadron name and have made plans to enjoy dinner at the local restaurant, Crabby Joe s. You can call Anchor s Away to make reservations or call Dan Fortman at for more information. If you are interesting in participating in the annual Cooperative Charting/picnic, now sponsored by the Akron Sail and Power Squadron, you may do so on 20 August. We will meet at Battery Park in Sandusky and go from there. You can participate by boat or if you choose, you can ride on one of the other available boats that will be there for that purpose. If interested, you can call Dan Fortman on this as well at Pleasant Hill Fishing Festival Kayaks, Paddle Boards... Fun!! The USS COD Memorial Ceremony was held on Memorial Day and MPS was well represented by P/D/C Mike Siwek, SN and P/C Charlie Tarbert, JN. Once again this year, the Pleasant Hill Fishing Festival was held and our booth was front and center. This event is hosted by ODNR and was well attended. Nearly 100 life jackets were distributed to children and many activities were available such as kayaking, canoeing, pontoon boat rides and fishing. P/C Richard Clark, SN and P/C Dennis Figley, SN assisted P/C Dan Fortman, AP with manning the booth and informing interested persons about Safe Boating and about MPS. Catching Their First Fish...Ever Our 1st rendezvous this year was in concert with Berea Sail and Power Squadron at Put-In-Bay. It was held on June and more will be discussed about this in our next Yachtsman. The District 7 Annual Rendezvous (South of the Border Down Huron Way) will be held on July. Docking in the Wind
5 5 Boating Safety - It s For Everyone Some facts: Safety Officer, P/C Dan Fortman, AP The most common accident to passengers and crew is falling overboard. According to the statistics, over 40% of all fatal boating accidents start this way. It can be avoided if boaters make sure they have good footing and a good hand-hold at all times. An age old seafaring reminder goes like this. One hand for the ship, one hand for the sailor. Children should never be allowed to move about on an underway boat. If you need to move around, for any reason, reduce speed and make sure to get a grip with at least one hand. And never forget your PFDs, especially for the children. Alcohol and water don t mix. In a Red Cross study, two-thirds of boating injury victims had consumed alcohol. Almost 40% had an alcohol level above the legal limit. Besides being illegal, it s dangerous to operate any kind of machinery while drinking. A boat is no exception. 35% of boating accidents were directly attributable to alcohol use and the overwhelming primary cause of fatalities was alcohol related. If you drink and boat, you are more likely to be involved in an accident, and once involved, more likely to die. 53% of fatal boating accident victims drowned, while 39% suffered trauma and 9% died of other causes. CAUSE OF FIRE: BILGE PUMP The purpose of a bilge pump is to protect your boat, and for the most part, this is exactly what it does. But every year there are reports of bilge pumps smoking, melting, and even starting fires. The problem is caused by a combination of incorrect fuse size and something called rotor lock, a condition in which the bilge pump rotor can no longer spin because it s jammed with debris or bilge scum, or the bearings have seized. Here s what happens: A locked rotor causes the 12 volt wires to heat up, which should blow the fuse. But a fuse rated for more current than what the manufacturer calls for may not blow, even if the wires get hot. The hot wires create even more resistance, which decreases the current flow in the wires, preventing the fuse from ever blowing. Because electricity is still flowing, the wires start to smoke and eventually glow red-hot, at which point they could ignite anything flammable nearby. Many small bilge pumps call for a 3-amp fuse, but sometimes installers substitute a 5-amp fuse because they re more likely to have one laying around. It s critical to install the exact fuse size manufacturers recommend for use with their bilge pump. A fuse rated even one amp higher could lead to a fire if the rotor locks. Also, make sure the wire size to the pump is correct too small a wire can also overheat without the fuse blowing. WHAT ABOUT THE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS? The time to know if your fire extinguishers work is not when you are about to use them. While you may be able to use an extinguisher to put out a small fire, you may find that it s of little value if it hasn t been kept in operating condition. Below are some helpful tips to help make sure your fire extinguisher is in proper working order. Class A Ordinary materials Class-B Flammable liquids Class C Appliance, electrical Class D Metals Class K Cooking oils Some fire extinguishers may be made for more than one type of fire and they will be labeled as such, ABC or BC for example. Even if they haven t expired, extinguishers should be checked each month to help make sure they are ready for use. It is recommended that the following steps should be followed. Ensure easy access Check the seals Check the pressure Look for physical damage Most portable extinguishers have a pressure gauge that should be checked the reading should be in the green zone. If it s not, less expensive fire extinguishers will need to be replaced. Some more expensive portable fire extinguishers can be recharged if the pressure gauge is no longer in the green. Those types should be serviced annually by a qualified extinguisher company, who will tag them with the date of service. Also check for dents and corrosion, and make sure the nozzle hasn t gotten damaged. Non-rechargeable fire extinguishers don t last forever and have expiration dates, usually 12 (Continued on page 6)
6 6 (Continued from page 5) Coming Events July 8,9,10 with the Parade of Sail on July 7. The Tall Ships Are Coming to Fairport Harbor If you ve ever wanted to watch the majestic movement of a Tall Ship enter a harbor and observe the fluid movement of the crew as they handle the lines and control the wind in her sails, this is your chance. There will be four ships at the harbor, including The Niagara, with tours, day sails, music, food and vendors available. District 7 will also be hosting a booth that will offer attendees a chance dock a boat while never leaving the water using the new Simulator! This activity is free to anyone that visits the USPS District 7 Booth. Checkout the Tall Ships America website for specific information. July D/7 Rendezvous (South of the Border Down Huron Way) will be held at the Huron Boat Basin. Bring your boat (or stay in the local hotel), your maracas and your friends as we live the slogan of the USPS Come for the Boating Education. Stay for the Friends.
