Commodore s Log Hello Salty Dogs, As I am thinking of a topic for this month s newsletter (at the last minute, as usual) I discovered an interesting article about the wreck of the Ten Sail, a shipwreck that occurred off the East End of Grand Cayman Island on February 8, Legend has it that this wreck had a direct effect on taxation in the Caymens. I thought this article would be appropriate as I am again getting knee deep in tax preparation for another season. Heather Gardens Way, Aurora, CO PLEASE GOOGLE THE ADDRESS BEFORE SETTING OUT: Recently I have had several conversations that go something like this: February, 2014 by Dick Hug Following the British Royal Navy's capture of the French 12-pounder frigate, ''l'inconstante'', off of St. Domingue, the British took charge of the ship in November 1793, renaming it HMS Convert. The newly christened naval frigate and her seasoned captain, John Lawford, were ordered to escort a 6-vessel merchant convoy from Jamaica to Britain. The convoy was also joined by three other vessels bound for the United States. After sailing for nearly 24 hours, Lawford believed they had already passed Grand Cayman Island. Before going to bed the evening of February 7, 1794, the captain gave permission for a change of course several points to the north, heading directly for the western end of Cuba and the Florida Channel. With most of the convoy to the south of the lead ship, six or seven merchantmen ships moved ahead of the leading ship and without notice of the ''Convert's'' watch. At 3 a.m. on February 8, Lawford was called on deck following the discharge of a distress gun. With a ''Convert'' watchman yelling, "Breakers ahead. Close to us!", Lawford gave orders for the rest of the fleet to disperse, hoping to avoid disaster. A merchantman ship on the opposite tack, however, struck the Convert twice and forced it into the windward reef, causing the ship to become severely damaged and eventually (Continued on page 4) by Janet Heinen Question: - Do you know what is happening with Chatfield Reservoir? Only three sailing event coordinator positions are still open this sailing season! Coordinating a sail is rewarding, especially if you like planning, sailing, and socializing. As a coordinator you get to know the boat owners and their preferences. You plan and publicize the events; you sail for free, you meet new sailors, and have fun. Residents of the Cayman Islands enjoy a tax-free existence; local legend has it that the reason for the absence of taxation is related directly to the Wreck of the Ten Sail. According to the legend, a member of the passenger list for the 10 vessels included a royal prince, one of the sons of Britain s King George III. The legend further states that when the King was apprised of the bravery on the part of the Caymanians in saving the crews and passengers of the foundering ships, he decided to repay their bravery. The reward became a decree that the people of the Cayman Islands would thereafter be free from war conscription and taxes. There is, however, no documented evidence that the decree was ever issued or that there was a member of the Royal Family on board one of the ships. Regardless, the legend continues today and is oft repeated to travelers and Boat Show The 2014 Denver Boat Show was a great success despite the water-skiing squirrel being a no-show. We had around 75 people request to be on the newsletter mailing list, and several folks joined the club at the show. Thanks to all who manned the booth. 5 Lazarette 1985 Starwind 27 "Cathryn Lee" is for sale. Price $8030 This Starwind was built by Wellcraft Marine. She is a fast, comfortable and very safe racer/cruiser, and has been undergoing a two year restoration and upgrade. Projects should be complete by the end of December. Complete photo history of renovation is available. She is berthed at the South Shore Marina on Lake Pueblo, Colorado, and can be shown to serious buyers. The 27 is in many ways an ideal lake boat or coastal cruiser. Small enough to transport with a trailer (not included), yet large enough to accommodate a family and to overnight comfortably. Her design is excellent for cruising, but she also has a good racing history. She has a large sail inventory and a long list of included equipment. Cathryn Lee has sailed safely in winds over 35 knots, and has cruised the Gulf of Mexico. Halyards run aft to the cockpit for ease in single handing. The 9.9 HP outboard is equipped with an alternator and electric start. The Starwind's shoal draft keel (draft 3'7") allows you to come close to shore in as little as five feet of water, but the heavy keel makes her a stiff sailor in a breeze. And on top of it all, she is a very pretty boat. She has great lines and down below there is ample woodwork for a yacht-like look. The Salty Dog Sailing Club, Inc. is a Colorado nonprofit organization composed of couples and singles interested in sailing and socializing with others who share their love for the sport. Boat owner and non-owners are welcome! The Club plans about a dozen sails each season, including day and weekend sails at nearby lakes. Special three day holiday trips often include Lake Granby or Pueblo Reservoir in Colorado, Lake McConaughy in Nebraska, or Glendo Reservoir in Wyoming. Salty Dog members have also organized charter sails in the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Greece, and France. Aside from sailing, we have a variety of fun dryland activities throughout the year. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, except for February, November and December when there are banquets and special parties. Meetings during the off season are held at Red and Jerry s at 1840 W Oxford Ave. #B, Sheridan, CO Beginning in June regular club meetings resume at the Chatfield Marina. Rendezvous at the Seagull (Chatfield Marina) Restaurant around 5:30-6:00 for socializing with other members and to order dinner.
