We also had a glimpse of our club s adventurous and entertaining founding member and past commodore, Gari Westcott, who is off again sailing somewhere on the fair seas. The Pacific You won t want to miss our next meeting on February 12 th. This time we are going to Tonga! When I called Dave Davies to car pool to our Annual meeting in December during the snow storm, he answered from the beach in Tonga! Join Dave and Jo Davies for adventures in Tonga. Some of you may remember Steve and Adele Williams, also long-time club members, who from time to time have sold their homes, children, and whatever else it took to embark on sailing adventures: living aboard in the Sea of Cortez, sailing through the Panama Canal, and seeking night encounters with a freighter. Steve and Adele can explain more as they join Dave in his presentation on Tonga. The Boat Show Big thanks to Neal and Ann for all the work and great planning for our Salty Dog booth. Thanks to Dave for encrypting the signatures on the signup sheets for potential interest in our club. Thanks to all who helped with publicity and who volunteered at the booth. Boatowners Some of you have sent me your insurance Declarations page. Thanks! If you have not, you can either bring it to the meeting or send it to me by or snail mail (eatingethically@gmail.com or 1827 Quail Street, Apt 1, Lakewood, CO 82015). Landlubbers Plan to be there on March 14 th! Meanwhile, give a shout to our Rear Commodore, Dick Hug and Rear Vice Commodore, Janet Heinen, with your experiences and stories of the extraordinarily funny events you recall from last year s sailing season. Who will receive the coveted Broken Mast Award? Colorado How many days is it until sailing season? Well, that depends on where you are sailing. In Colorado, we can dream, travel, and prepare in many ways for sailing with shifting winds and blue skies, on inland waters, with mountain views. As you develop friendships with some of the sailors in our club, you may end up in a far distant place, with a different set of sailing conditions, which just might lend challenge and excitement to your life! Or it could be bob and bake. Here s to a great sailing season in 2015, no matter what the weather!

Volume 34, Issue 2 Page 2 Vice Commodore s Log by John Venema Greetings my fellow sailors. I am honored to be your Vice Commodore for 2015, and I look forward to working with a well-chosen board of officers. I plan to arrange some interesting, fun and educational gatherings during the year. I hope to see many of you at the meetings and on the water. Thinking ahead to our summer sails, I came up with what follows One of the advantages of belonging to a sailing club is that you usually know who you will be sailing with. If not, get to know fellow crew members and the captain. Also get to know the sailboat before you set sail. Here are some questions you may want answered: WHAT SAIL COORDINATORS AND CAPTAINS MAY NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE SIGNING UP CREW: Balance your crew like you balance your boat under sail. Do you have some knowledge of the skills and limitations of each crew member? If not, you may want to ask them. Try to balance each boat with at least one skilled sailor to be first mate and also take a novice or two aboard; these sailors want to learn sailing skills from you and your first mate. WHAT CREW MAY WANT TO CONSIDER BEFORE GOING OUT ON A DAYSAIL: 1.) Is the captain experienced and well trained and able to handle the mental, physical, and social challenges associated with captaining this boat? 2.) Is the boat well maintained and in a good and safe condition? Are you familiar with the operation of the boat? 3.) How does the way this captain likes to sail compare with the way YOU like to sail? ( On the edge, leisurely, or somewhere in between?) 4.) What does the captain expect of you and the rest of the crew? 5.) Are you and the captain compatible? Wishing you fun and safe sailing,

Volume 34, Issue 2 Page 3 Lake Pueblo Sailing Club Invitation Courtesy of Art Blevins The Lake Pueblo Sailing Club recently contacted us about possibly doing a joint weekend sail together. They suggested maybe some of our boats could participate in one of the usual rallies for LPSC on some Saturday (see listed below), followed by a more relaxed sail of joint boats/crews out for an afternoon Salty-Dog-style on Sunday. With camping out in-between. Possibly a casual Friday sail, too, like a lot of SDSC weekend sails. I recently got their 2015 schedule (see below). If we'd like to do something with them as a joint club event, now is probably the time to act/plan. P.S. They are the ones who contacted us about a joint event. Art Subject: 2015 Lake Pueblo Sailing Club Schedule and Updates From: lakepueblosailingclub@gmail.com Date: Fri, 2 Jan :43: Hello LPSC, I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season! With the new year upon us I thought it would be helpful to get the 2015 sailing club schedule out to you all. It will also be on Facebook under the Lake Pueblo Sailing Club Group and a flier will be posted at both marinas. Our season will start in April and finish up in October. To be consistent with last year, there will be a rally on the second Saturday of each month. We will have additional Spring and Fall dates on the fourth Saturdays of June, September and October. To avoid Memorial weekend crowds, May's second rally will held on the 30th. This will give us a total of 11 Saturdays, same as last year. You can expect a variety of courses when we race around the buoys depending on the wind speed & direction. We will also use the around the island course occasionally to mix it up even more. Here are the Saturday Rally dates for 2015: April 11 May 9 May 30 June 13 June 27 July 11 August 8 September 12 September 26 October 10 October 24 What's new for 2015 is the addition of Wednesday sailing. In an effort to give more of you a chance to join us, we will be getting together every Wednesday following the Saturday rallies. These events can be whatever those who participate want them to be, race, rally, group sail, or social. With that in mind, there will need to be some communication in advance to determine who will be there, time and place to meet, format, etc. The Wednesday dates are as follows: April 15 May 13 June 3 June 17 July1 July15 August 12 September 16 September 30 October 14

Volume 34, Issue 2 Page 4 October 28 Another improvement for this year will be a change in the way we start our events. This year we will begin each rally/race with the same start sequence. Here is what to expect. 1. A starting mark (buoy) will be placed off the west end of Sailboard Beach at least 30 min prior to the start. The start/finish line will be between the mark and a landmark on shore. 2. Radio check-in on vhf69 or come up along side and hail the committee boat (Skye) prior to the 5 min start sequence. The format, course, fleet breakdown, etc. will be announced. 3. Horn will sound & the club flag will go up at 5 min to start. 4. Horn & preparatory flag up at 4 min to start. 5. Horn and preparatory flag down at 1 min to start. 6. Horn and club flag down will complete the start sequence. This is pretty much the standard for starting sailboat races wherever you sail. Like last year Skye will stay at the finish to record times & retrieve the mark. This should be the best year yet for the Lake Pueblo Sailing Club. Plan to join us as often as you can in 2015! Please feel free to forward this schedule to anyone who may be interested in sailing at Lake Pueblo. Fair Winds, Ric Geiman

Volume 34, Issue 2 Page 5 Lazarette February Meeting Salty Dog Presentation Thursday Feb 12th at Red and Jerry's Tonga Tonga! Dave and Jo Davies will give a talk -- slides and videos -- about their recent bareboat sail charter in the Tongan Archipelago. They chartered with four others including former Dogs ( Adele Williams and Scotti McCarthy). A light-hearted and hopefully humorous account of taking a 44-foot Jeaneau sloop around the islands of Vava'u Tonga. Including a dramatic encounter with humpback whales, some exciting sailing and kayaking, the wonderful Tongans they met, the culture of Tonga, a Tonga feast and a brief account of how to get there (and back) -- not a trivial exercise. SKI DAY! Join the Salty Dogs for a day of skiing at Copper Mountain Thursday, March 12, Meet around 10:00 am at the base of the American Eagle lift. We will wait around a bit, but if we miss you please join us for lunch at Solitude Station somewhere between 12:15 and 12:30 pm. Please let me know if you will be skiing with us so we know who to look for. Lyn Hesketh

Volume 34, Issue 2 Page 6 Lake Granby Sail July! We have four campsites reserved for 2 July to 5, 6 July. These are #s 94, 95, 96, and 97. (We do not have the same sites as last year, as they were already taken by someone else. These are near our old sites, but not as large.) There will be a sign up sheet at the next meetings in March and April. If you have questions call me or Becky Mock anytime. TOM PREBYNSKI THANKS In Memoriam CH Augustines Rigged For Sailfish RN, AWD a.k.a. Riggs Hug 7/31/02 to 1/4/15 Many of our Salty Dog friends knew Riggs, a champion Portuguese Water Dog, as the unofficial mascot for the club. Many of you sailed with him and some of you shared your lunch with him (willingly or maybe not). On January 4, Riggs sailed calmly and confidently to distant waters. Riggs loved making all of you laugh with his antics. He took a piece of our heart with him. He will be greatly missed. Dick and Kathy Hug
