1 Dog Tales Commodore s Log Commodore s Log for April ---- LOTS going on with your Club! April 2019 Marilyn Allen Believing that we can t get where we re going if we don t know where it is, our Vice Commodore Blair (with a little help from yours truly), created the Salty Dog Mission Statement and Goals and Objectives. These were shared at the March meeting and as Commodore, I m pleased we have in writing a solid definition of our club and our goals for the future. Inside this issue: Sailing Schedule 3 Announcements 5 Upcoming Events Details found in newsletter April Meeting April 11 Star Gazing April 16 Salty Dog Sailing Club Goals and Objectives During the 2019 sailing year: Increase total membership by 10%, increase members with boats to share by 5%, Increase overall participation in events by 10%. Partner with at least 2 other sailing organizations, such as Colorado Sail and Yacht Club and BVPS, for fun events with the goal of stimulating interest in sailing and increasing membership in all organizations. Help and encourage members and guests to increase and improve their sailing skills Provide a Social Network both on and off the water to encourage social activities. BOAT OWNERS! The annual Boat Wash will be held on Sat. May 4 at Chatfield. All our owners, and especially those who were so active last year, are invited to bring their boats for a complimentary scrub. This event is coordinated by Rear Commodore Becky with hard labor provided by SD members. It s just one way we say thank you to our wonderful boat owners. See details in Announcements in this newsletter. PARTY TIME as a result of meetings with Board members of Colo Sail and Yacht Club, Salty Dog members have been invited to CSYC s Wine and Cheese get together on April 6. This will be a great chance for us to co-mingle with their club, which primarily is a racing club, while we introduce them to the more mellow aspects of sailing. See full invitation in Announcements section of this newsletter. JOINT EVENTS we ll also be doing 1-2 joint sails with CSYC s cruising arm. Check the calendar for updates. I ve also been in touch with the Commodore of Boulder Valley Power Squadron and we re discussing joint events with them as well. All 3 of our organizations offer different sailing opportunities, so I see a great potential benefit for each club. DISCOUNTS AND LEARNING OPPORTUNTIES!!! Tibor Van den Wildenbergh, the owner of Victoria Sailing School and Colorado Watersports, spoke to us at the March meeting about the timing of Chatfield Reservoir opening, opportunities for fun events with their Dinghy program and best of all, he s giving Salty Dog members a 5% discount on classes and rentals. This would be a great opportunity for our newer or less experienced members to up their sailing skills and the more experienced members to get great discounts on the ASA advanced programs. Go to the website: and check out all the great opportunities they have available. ( continued on page 4 )

2 Vice Commodore s Log Greetings fellow dogs, Blair Ohler Page 2 Can summer be far away? Why Buy boats are in the water at Cherry Creek. I will have my first sail of the season in early April. The Board conducted a survey in January and again in March; that gave us some inputs as to what you would like to see and hear during our upcoming meetings. This month, April, we will hear from John Venema about docking boats correctly and from Richard Hug about common courtesy on-board and around a boat. There may be more. These are always subject to change. As you know, we had a briefing by Tibor about the various products Colorado Water Sports offers. Some of these were tailored to our needs and, I believe, we get a 5% discount if we work through any of the Colorado Water Sports organizations: Why Buy Club, Victoria Sailing School, and Colorado Water Sports activities. The upcoming meeting will be at Piccolo s Restaurant, as usual, and is on Thursday, April 11, 2019 starting at 5:30 for socializing followed by dinner and presentations. See you there. 4 Page 4 Commodore s Log - continued from page 1 SAIL AND SWIM? For our members who don t mind getting a little wet, we re planning a fun sailing experience with Dinghy sailing. Watch your newsletter for time and date. If you ve ever sailed a Dinghy, you know it s lots of fun, but you most likely WILL get wet! DRY LAND EVENT Star Gazing at Observatory Park is scheduled and a Rockies Game is in the works. Our Dry Land Coordinator has some great ideas. Thanks A REMINDER TO SAILING PARTICIPANTS The guidelines below are from our Policies. While experienced members and boat owners are very happy to assist newer and less experienced sailors, it s important for the safety of all that participants have at least a minimal amount of sailing knowledge and a willingness to learn. A quick Google search for sailing terms or Sailing for Dummies are both great starts. A You Tube Search for funny sailing videos will show you what can go wrong! The Crew Member should follow the directions of the Captain and be interested in learning: A. How to board, disembark, and move around on a sailboat safely without assistance B. The basics of rigging and de-rigging the sailboat. C. The names of the parts of the sailboat, rigging, sails and sailing equipment in order to follow simple verbal instructions from the captain. D. The fundamentals of leaving the dock, sailing, and docking. E. The location of all safety equipment on-board and how to use it. See you all at the April meeting! Marilyn Allen, Commodore.

Dateline April 1 Of Science and Sailing NASA scientists are poring over what they say are best described as quite unexpected findings in the images coming back from the Mars Rover shortly before it went off - line. Reluctant to go public, saying the findings merit extensive additional investigation and review, briefings with a select group of science reporters reveals a high degree of certainty in finding significant evidence of water on the red planet. While speculation of the existence of water is not new, the new findings seem to indicate not just firm proof that there were once great bodies of water similar to those on earth today, but in fact there are signs that there once existed possibly sophisticated craft that traversed the waters. Not quite ready to be quoted openly, senior NASA scientists are very excited to be finding what they say is unequivocal evidence of sail craft. Specifically they are analyzing imagery that appear to be primitive canoe type craft, and in one instance appears to be something not unlike a sailing vessel. Questioned further, they have replied with what appeared to be a wink, and a firm No Comment. Sir Richard Branson and James Cameron were said to be interested in following up on this promising new frontier of science and adventure. Sailing, Technology, Markets Uber and Lyft, in their increasing efforts to develop new markets, have announced development and upcoming launch of a joint fleet of Water Craft, dubbed, not surprisingly, the Water Taxi. Explaining this latest venture, they say they hope to offer a new, convenient alternative to dinghy s, short - haul ferry service, and marina accommodation. With the new app, the boating public can call the new Water Taxi on short notice to bring them in from remote anchorage, get them to and from their boat after a night of perhaps one too many beverages, or simply give them a chance to relax after a long day out, and leave the driving to someone else. Uber and Lyft have also indicated plans for future entry into the tug market, with sleek but powerful new vessels to compete with aging tug fleet and crews. In a related story, Elon Musk has announced a design for a fleet of completely automated pilotless tugs and Water Taxi s. Details at this time are vague.
