3 Pop Quiz Page 3 Can you name these two handsome guys? Answer on page 4 Christmas Caribbean Rally Did you Know: There is a Christmas Caribbean Rally: December 16 th, 2013 January 11 th, 2014: Resources can be found at: ( scuttlebutt2/ eventdescription.cfm? ID=22205) and the following article at sailingrallies.com/events/ christmas-caribbean-rally-2013 Transatlantic with Sailing Rallies The Christmas Caribbean Rally 2013 is an exciting new sailing rally crossing the Atlantic, taking place at the end of The CCR will leave Marina Rubicon, Lanzarote on Monday 16th December 2013 and participants will sail the 2850 miles to arrive in Jolly Harbour, Antigua in the New Year. We have set the timing of this Transatlantic crossing to use the natural rhythm of the seasons to optimum effect; when the trade winds are likely to be fully established and the hurricane season is behind us. By holding the rally over the Christmas holiday period, we hope sailors from all walks of life will be able to participate. We also hope that by coinciding with school and college holidays, families with children of all ages will join the rally. We aim to make the Christmas Caribbean Rally an inclusive, unique event. What an exciting way to spend Christmas and New Year! For those of you who are staying on in the Caribbean, you will have arrived at the start of the season, in plenty of time to explore before the carnival or sailing regatta seasons start. There are so many sailing activities around the world, especially in our part of the world; it might be fun to follow one or two of them, better still, to participate.
4 Page 4 Answers to Pop Quiz Tom Slingsby (born 5 September 1984) is an Australian sailor from the Central Coast of New South Wales. He is the reigning world champion and olympic gold medalist in the laser class. He is an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder Won the Laser dinghy world championships Ranked number one in the Laser dinghy class prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics Laser competition but finished 23rd overall Won the Laser dinghy world championships at Hayling Island, UK. He was also named the male ISAF World Sailor of the Year Won the Laser ISAF World Sailing Championships at Fremantle, Australia Won the Laser dinghy world championship at Boltenhagen Germany for his fifth world title Won the Men's Laser Gold Medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London Won the Australian Institute of Sport Athlete of the Year Award with swimmer Alicia Coutts Won the 34th America's Cup as the strategist The Cold Reality Glenn Ashby (born 1 September 1977) is an Australian sailor from Bendigo, Victoria. He and skipper Darren Bundock were the 2007 world champions in the Tornado class and ranked number one in the event going into the 2008 Summer Olympics. However, they were beaten by the Spanish team and won silver. Ashby has also won 8 consecutive A Class world championships. He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia in Oracle Team USA. Re-signed with Oracle for their defence of the cup. [ In December 2013 Slingsby is a crew member aboard racing supermaxi yacht Perpetual Loyal in the 2013 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, with his other celebrity crew members, Karl Stefanovic,Larry Emdur, Phil Waugh, Jude Bolton and Guillaume Brahimi. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia by John Venema If I fall into the water, someone will throw me a life jacket and I can put it on. I m a good swimmer. These words are not valid in cold water. Coast Guard research reveals that, when a boater falls into frigid water, the following is likely to happen: 1. Within the FIRST MINUTE, the cold shock response will take place and the victim will gasp for air. Without a life jacket keeping the victims head above water, the victim may drown when he inhales a significant amount of water and cannot achieve breath control. 2. Regardless of swimming ability, meaningful motion will cease within ten minutes. Forty three percent of cold water drowning victims who were not wearing a life jacket were within six feet of safety. 3. With a proper life jacket, the victim may survive up to fifty additional minutes before hypothermia takes his life. Ninety percent of cold water drowning victims were NOT wearing a life jacket. ALWAYS wear a proper life jacket when sailing in frigid water--- PLEASE! John Venema, Assistant Safety Education Officer
