Mtng. Apr 2 Bela Fleck Apr 2 Meeting Apr 14 Wine Tasting Apr 15 Here is a big THANK YOU to all of you who responded with suggestions for our new monthly meeting location, to Blair Ohler for compiling the data, and to Lori Conway for doing the final search and selection of Garcia s Mexican Restaurant for our next two club meetings this April 14 th and May 12 th. We believe you will enjoy this facility! Address: 5050 S. Syracuse, Denver Tech Center. Since our members range from Parker to Boulder, there is not a location that can be ideal for everyone. Your input (by phone or ) on pros and cons of Garcia s is welcomed, and your suggestions for a better location, if one comes to mind, are encouraged as we have not settled on the location for the meetings after summer. In the months of June, July, and August, we plan to continue meeting in Seagull s Restaurant at Chatfield Marina, and then, weather permitting, get out on the water to sail in the evenings. Event Coordinators and Boat Owners Meeting On Sunday, April 2, plan to attend the annual Event Coordinators and Boat Owners Meeting at the home of Lori Conway. Becky Mock will provide handouts, lead the best practices discussion, and share guidelines for being successful in coordinating events, both on the water and off! Landlubbers Awards Banquet Review The Annual Salty Dogs Landlubbers Awards Banquet was held in our private room behind Blossom s Restaurant at Windsor Gardens on Thursday, March 11 th. A two hour slide show of more than 200 photographs from the 2015 sailing season played in the background. Kudos to Art Blevins and Blair Ohler for technical assistance, designing and producing the show, and to all who contributed the photographs! The Commodore acknowledged the 2015 Board for a job well done. Each gave a short speech and received a club hat in the color of their choice as a thank you gift. The new Board for 2016 was introduced and given the opportunity to speak. With half the Board returning to serve another term, we have a lot of experience and continuity and look forward to sharing another fantastic fun-filled year with you.

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 2 The AWARDS were ceremoniously presented. Acknowledgements were first presented to those who engaged in Service and Education involving boating safety and technical skills: Ellie Watson was recognized for her service to Boating Safety. She has served as U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Safety Inspector on several area lakes for numerous years. Becky Mock was recognized for passing the Sailing Course offered by the BVSPS. Janet Heinen was recognized for taking the Sailing Course offered by the BVSPS. Norm Brown, Dave Davies, Rick Gulick, and John Venema took, taught and/or promoted courses in sailing, seamanship, weather, and advanced piloting and were recognized for their contributions to the boating community. Belatedly, the award for the 2014 Outstanding New Members went to Joanne Terry and Bradley Terry for their dynamic participation and contributions to club events. The 2015 Outstanding New Member award went to Gary Kieft, for stepping up to the plate to take on the challenging position of On-The-Water Director. For initially setting up our website and serving as Esteemed Social Media Mentor, Jo Davies was recognized as Webmaster Emeritus For his extensive experience and the many classes he has participated in as student and as the instructor, Dave Davies was recognized as a Sailing and Boating Subject Matter Expert (SME). The Outstanding Gentleman Sailor award was presented by Marilyn Allen to Skipper Jim Montgomery for his respectful and courteous responses in the face of adversity and foul play from park rangers at the Chatfield launch ramp. The most Outstanding All Round Sailor award went to, Captain Zeke Zebaur, who in addition to being our Frisco Marina Sail n Party captain at Lake Dillon, also sails and can organize sails in the Baltic Sea from the Latvian coast. The Sail Anywhere Anytime Award went to Skipper Cliff Randall, as the skipper you can always count on. Cliff briefly described some of his adventures on the high seas in some big sailing ships. The Coordinator of the Year for 2015 went to Blair Ohler, as the Ladies Day Champion. Recall that Chatfield Lake was flooded during the first half of the summer. As a new member, Blair had generously volunteered to coordinate the sail. The sail was postponed, and Blair again coordinated with a new date. However, the floodwaters rose higher, and the launch ramp ended up even deeper under water. In exasperation, Blair gave up but then called back and again volunteered. Three times a charm! The sail was coordinated ever so beautifully!! The Salty Dog of the Year for 2015 went to Skipper John Venema, for his attention to detail, easy going manner, skills as skipper and coordinator, many years of leadership on the Board, and for heading the club in the pursuit of boating and safety education.

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 3 The most coveted award, the Broken Mast Award was most graciously accepted by Skipper Jim Montgomery for his episode of trying to launch his boat without applying his vehicle s hand break, while on the launch ramp, before stepping out onto the ramp to assess whether the boat was yet afloat. The result was a floating tow vehicle full of water up to the windows, and a rapidly failing electrical system, which included door opening incapacity. Quite fortunately, a fellow boater waded into the water and hooked up to Jim s vehicle to tow it back up the ramp to the loading area where the water could drain out. Also fortunately, the driver s window was down and that permitted Jim s entrance back into the driver s seat in a most becoming, and acrobatic, manner. There is quite a bit more to the story. You should have been there at least for the pictures! Congratulations, Jim! This is the highest honor any Salty Dog can receive, and you follow in the footsteps of great sailors! Looking forward to seeing you at Garcia s on April 14 th! Carol Kolesnikoff, Commodore 2016 Board Secretary Dianna Bliss and Commodore Carol Salty Dog of the Year John Venema Gentleman Sailor Jim Cook

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 4 Vice Commodore s Corner Log by Lori Conway I hope you all had a nice time at Landlubbers Award ceremony. I heard it went very well. I m sorry I couldn t make it but I had a death in the family and spent 10 days in Eugene, Oregon. I heard that The Bistro Restaurant has asked us to find someplace else to have our meetings. I appreciate the suggestions that were forwarded to me. Some of the venues asked for a room charge so I crossed those off my list. I called four places and Pat Pardekooper called two. For the next two meetings April 14 and May 12 we will be meeting at: Garcia s Mexican Restaurant 5050 S Syracuse St. Denver, CO The restaurant is close to I-25 and Belleview in the Denver Tech area. I realize this may not please everyone but keep in mind it is only temporary. The food is good and there is a separate entrance to the meeting room which is large with round tables. A modified menu will be available to us. Sailing season starts June and we will meet at Chatfield Lake from June through August. Our speaker for April will be Jim Cook, owner of Victoria Sailing School. He will be presenting on sailing skills. I m looking forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. A reminder will be sent out prior to the meeting so no one shows up at The Bistro and says Where are the Salty Dogs? Lori Conway, VC Salty Dog Membership March 29, 2016 Statistics: New Members: 31 Members Paid: 57 Members Not Paid: 79 Members Total: 136 Boat Owners: 39 Membership Report March 2016 I am really pleased to see so many new members. As the Membership Director I welcome each of the new members to the club. I also welcome back the veteran Dogs. Thanks to all for the continued support and help. For those who ran ads in local papers, thank you so much. The ads were successful. Submitted by Blair Ohler, Membership Director

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 5 Dry Land Activities by Therese Schoen For any events that require prepayment of tickets, please note: Groups: 10 or more are required to qualify for group discounts. A block of seats can be reserved with a 20% nonrefundable deposit. A final count and payment due 3 weeks prior to performance based on ticket availability. For Béla Fleck and The Scarlet Letter, we should place the 20% deposit ASAP. Unless another coordinator is indicated, please mail checks to Therese Schoen, 1150 S. Birch St., Apt , Denver CO 80246, Cell: Deadlines: Since these are popular attractions, making reservations and paying the deposit should be done as soon as possible. Renowned musician Béla Fleck will be at the Colorado Symphony on Saturday, April 2, 2016, 7:30PM A meeting with Béla before or after the performance might be possible, depending upon the number of attendees in our group. Ten is the minimum for group tickets. Group rate tickets, level 3 $ Good seats are available on this level. Depending on the size of our group and the artist s availability, we might be able to arrange a meeting either before or after a performance with the featured artist. Not guaranteed but a possibility. The genre-defying king of the banjo, Béla Fleck has been nominated in more categories than any other artist in Grammy history, and has taken home thirteen of the awards to date. For these performances, acclaimed conductor Jose Luis Gomez leads Fleck in the regional premier of his second Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra, a piece cocommissioned by the Colorado Symphony. Don't forget to arrive early for the prelude at 6:30 pm hosted by local music historian, Betsy Schwarm. Preludes are insightful discussions that take place before each Masterworks performance and are included with your concert ticket. Complimentary Winery tour Space set aside for our group Guests in our group will receive a 10% discount on wines purchased the day of your gathering

Sunday, May , 2:00 PM matinee performance of Lori Laitman s The Scarlet Letter Ellie Caulkins Opera House Denver is hosting the world premier of this opera and it is drawing international attention and attendance. We need a group of 10 to secure group ticket rates. I m suggesting Level 4 tickets, $49.50 each. Seating at sides and back of Loge (3 rd floor) and front of balcony (4 th floor). We would meet at the opera house lobby, just inside and before the staff collecting tickets. Denver Performing Arts Complex, 14 th at Curtis, Denver, CO Parking in the complex garage, either $12 or $10 on weekends. There are restaurants nearby if we want to have food or drinks before or after. We can decide if we have enough interest in the opera. Crabs (large) were running $10 each last year. Restaurant has a full menu/bar. In Maryland: Crabs are traditionally in season any month without an r, so May August. Oysters are in season in any month with an r, so September to April. 7 Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 7 Calling all Boat Owners, Sail Coordinators, and Event Coordinators Organizational Meeting Saturday, April 2, :00 to 3:00 PM Lori Conway s House 8344 S Upham Way, Littleton, CO Call Becky Mock, On the Water Coordinator, for information, RSVP, etc.

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 8 Save the Date Sixth Annual Boat Wash Saturday, May 7, 2016 Chatfield Reservoir Here is an opportunity for club members to assist boat owners for the season. The Plan Agenda 9:00 AM 12:00 PM Meet boat owners at Lakeview Parking area (at end of road to campsite loops B & C) to help as needed. Pot luck lunch (Bring your own entrée and a side dish or dessert to share. You will also need your own table service and drink and a chair.) Finishing cleaning/launching boats. Sail, sail, sail (at captains discretion after boats are cleaned) Bring rags/sponges/buckets. We have hoses covered. I will not be camping this year, but feel free to do so if you choose. Cost of campsites is $ Campsites can have one hard side camper and a tent; no more than 2 vehicles per site. Make your own reservations. If someone has a pressure washer we can use (Cliff?), please let me know. We have water available at the parking lot but no electricity. If you own a boat and would like to have it cleaned and polished, please let me know. Contact Becky Mock if you are interested.

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 9 Memorial Day Weekend at Glendo Reservoir, Wyoming Dates: May 27 th, Friday May 30 th, Monday Once again the Salty Dogs will be leaving the crowds to go to the hills of Wyoming with open spaces and big lakes. Glendo is an easy three-hour drive from Denver, no mountain passes. We have two camp sites, #57 and #59, reserved for party headquarters. The rest of the camping is first come/first serve. We will be in the Two Moon Campground again this year. We will try to save some other first come/first serve campsites. Carpooling is strongly recommended because of the way Wyoming state charges for entry into their state parks. They charge per vehicle entering for camping. They have a daily fee and an overnight fee, totaling $17 per day. So the pricing for the trip will just cover the expenses of bringing up the boats, slip fees, gas, and entry fees for the boats. Everyone will be responsible for their own camping and entry fees: $17 per day. We will probably have a catered main dish for the potluck dinner for Saturday night. Remember to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert for the potluck. Sunday night will be an optional dining out in town of Glendo, maybe with a surprise birthday wish. Please bring your own drinks, camp chair, camping and sailing gear. Breakfast and lunches are on your own. For further camp details look at website: <wyo-parks.state.wy.us/index.aspx>. Those interested in a nearby hotel please call or Diana. (You need to call early for these). Cost of the 3-day trip will be $ Sign up early because of limited boat spaces. If signing up outside of the monthly meeting, please send check payable to Salty Dogs to Diana Bliss. Any further questions please contact either Diana Bliss or Lori Conway.

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 10 4th of July Sail Fri. - Mon., July 1-4, 2016 Lake Granby The 4th of July sail for 2016 will be on the 1st-4th of July. We can arrive on Friday the 1st and will leave on Monday the 4th. We have campsites reserved at the Stillwater Campground. There are also some motels in Granby and at Shadow Mountain Reservoir. Reserve rooms now. They usually fill up for this weekend. We are hoping for a good turnout for this sail. We usually get sailors and 4-5 boats. Granby is over 8,000 acres, eight times larger than Chatfield Reservoir. Activities available are fireworks in Grand Lake, telling lies and stories around the campfire, hot pools at Hot Sulphur Springs (pass for 8 people for $125), pot luck dinner on Saturday, and, of course, sailing. We will discuss an outing to Grand Lake for dinner on Sunday and a group breakfast on Monday before you leave. We still have room for more people and boats. Send your reservations to Tom Prebynski now. Theme for this year: Alaskan Fresh Fish Feast The pot luck dinner will be on Saturday night. The entrée is fresh caught fish (salmon, haddock). Tom will do his ice chest corn-on-the-cob and Becky the traditional pineapple upside down cake. Your dish assignments will be sent direct once we have a final count. Please remember that there will be many dishes. Most people do not take a full serving of everything. Plan accordingly. Each person will be responsible for the leftovers of their dish. Donation: $80 for members to camp, $130 for guests to camp, $60 for members staying in a motel, $100 for guests staying in a motel. Your check is your reservation. Mail to Tom Prebynski, 1838 S Van Gordon Ct, Lakewood, CO Looking forward to seeing you on the 4th. Contact: Tom and Sandy Prebynski or Becky Mock

Volume 35, Issue 4 Page 12 Lazarette Bruce Meyer Drowns in Grenada It is with great sadness that we have to share the news that former Salty Dog member Bruce Meyer drowned in a swimming accident at 4 pm on Saturday March 15. Bruce was snorkeling at Grand Mal, Grenada while on a charter sail. Despite the best efforts of his wife Carol to save him, he was apparently confused and swimming in the wrong direction. The Morelands and Carol searched for him by dinghy while Pardekoopers, who had been on the boat, hailed for help. Sailboats, fishing boats, Coast Guard, and dinghies searched. His body was recovered just before dusk. Arrangements have been made for the celebration of his life at Rockland Community Church, 17 South Mount Vernon, Country Club (CC) road, Golden Colorado Date: April 24 at 2 pm. Bruce and Carol were Salty Dog Members for many years from the mid 1990s until they left to live and sail in Florida a few years ago. Bruce will be missed. Our heartfelt condolences to Carol, Jenny (his daughter) Toney, and the rest of the family. The people of Grenada were helpful and kind. Horizon Yacht Charters could not have done more for us. The kindness and love of the people of Grenada and Horizon Yacht Charters will long be remembered. Pat & Jim Pardekooper This Month s Nautical Term Loose End Rope ends which have become unraveled are called loose ends. It was a never ending job in a sailing ship putting new whippings on the ends of the running gear. If a sailor found himself idle he would be ordered to go around the ship looking for loose ends to tie up. Hence the idea behind the expression of being bored with nothing to do. -from Salty Dog Talk, The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions, Bill Beavis and Richard G. McCloskey, 1983
