Dog Tales v Volume 35 Issue 6 June 2016 Commodore s Log by Carol Kolesnikoff Next Meeting Thurs June 9 5:30 PM Seagull s Restaurant (Chatfield) Inside this issue: Commodore s Log Vice Commodore s Log 1 2 Ahoy Salty Dogs! Ahoy Salty Dogs! It is finally sailing season in Colorado! We have a lively sailing schedule planned this year. If you have ideas for where else you d like to sail, contact the On-the-Water Director, Becky Mock. She can help you with date suggestions and guide you in coordinating any additional sails. Becky is a great mentor and will help you make it happen. Social Opportunities If you really want to get involved with fellow Salty Dog sailors, note that the September and October sails still have openings for event coordinators. With smaller crowds on the lakes, nice breezes and pleasant temperatures, those Fall sails are some of the very best sails. Coordinators get to interface with other sailing enthusiasts and they also sail for free. Dry Land Activities Burgees New Members Sail Mens Day Sail July 4 th Sail July Dillon Sail Chataquapalooza Sailing Schedule Lazarette Event Schedule 15 Upcoming Events Details found in newsletter Ladies Day Sail Overcast, rainy and cold were we in the Pacific Northwest or New England or Scotland? No. We were at Chatfield! Many of us donned triple layers, including raingear and gloves. Coordinator Gary Kieft greeted the participants with his usual casual positivity and we had a great time chatting, eating, walking the docks, checking out the boats, and meeting diehard boaters and sailors. Memorial Day Weekend Unfortunately, our big Memorial Day Weekend sail planned for the beautiful Lake Glendo in Wyoming had to be canceled due to lack of signups. This was an unanticipated first! Thanks to Diana Bliss and Lori Conway for their preliminary work as coordinators.
Volume 35, Issue 6 Page 2 Men s Day Sail Saturday, June 11 In order to avoid the huge crowd on Chatfield, this sail is the Saturday before Father s Day weekend. In appreciation of all the gentlemen sailors in our club, the Commodore yours truly, Carol Kolesnikoff, will coordinate. There will be a hearty brunch fit for a king before the sail. Independence Day Weekend at Granby July 1 5 Beautiful lake, awesome mountains, great friendships, fun camping and eating with a theme of Alaskan Fresh Fish Feast who could ask for more? With coordinators like Becky Mock and Tom Prebinski you are in for a memorable holiday weekend! Summertime Meetings at Chatfield In the months of June, July and August, we are meeting in Seagull s Restaurant at Chatfield Marina. Weather permitting, we will get out on the water to sail in the evenings. Everyone is looking forward to sailing on Thursday, June 9 th. It will be a short meeting with just enough time to grab a bite to eat at Seagull s Restaurant on the dock at Chatfield before we set sail. We meet at 5:30 pm. Traffic is always terrible, so it s best to plan to get there early! Carol Kolesnikoff, Commodore Vice Commodore s Log by Lori Conway Vice Commodore s Corner There is no Vice Commodore log this month. Catch you in July! Lori Conway, VC

Volume 35, Issue 6 Page 4 Salty Dog Burgees By Carol Kolesnikoff An order has been placed for Salty Dog Sailing Club custom burgees. They will arrive in time for the meeting on July 9. If you want to reserve one, contact Blair Ohler. The cost will be determined shortly, approximately $23. Etiquette Yacht clubs and their members fly their club's burgee while under way and at anchor, day or night. Sailing vessels fly the burgee either from the main masthead or from a halyard under the lowermost starboard spreader. Most all powerboats (i.e., those lacking any mast or having a single mast) fly the burgee off a short staff at the bow; two-masted power vessels fly the burgee at the foremast. Exchange Traditionally, the first time a member of one yacht club visits another, there is an exchange of burgees. Exchanged burgees are then often displayed on the club's premises, e.g., in the office or bar. On "Opening Day", sailors fly their burgees together. This is a fun activity so you may want to take a burgee with you when you travel and have the chance opportunity to visit another club. I unexpectedly got to visit the Nawiliwili Yacht club in Nawiliwili Harbor, Kaui, Hawaii in May. It was so much fun watching the regatta and celebrating with a bunch of sailors and their mates at the clubhouse. This could happen to you so travel prepared with a burgee in tow! Note that the design incorporates elements of the Colorado state flag with a salt colored Dog s paw print.
Volume 35, Issue 6 Page Boat Wash Report by Becky Mock Sailing season started with 8 souls braving the cold north wind to wash and polish 3 boats. Thanks to Bob Brand, Jim Montgomery, and Ron Greengas for bringing their boats. Janet Heinen, Lori Conway, Sarah Greengas, and Tim Jenkins made up the cleaning crew and scrubbed and polished until all three boats sparkled. The boat wash was completed by 11:30 and everyone left just before the rain hit. The Boat Wash is a small way we have to thank the boatowners for the use of their boats during sailing season. As you sail on these boats, please remember to thank them for allowing us to use their boats during our activities. See you on the water, Becky NORM BROWN RECEIVES BOATING EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD By John Venema Each year the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) names a boating educator of the year for the State of Colorado. For 2016, the award goes to one of our members, Norm Brown. Last year Norm did an exceptional job teaching seamanship courses for the Boulder Valley Sail and Power Squadron in the classroom. After the classroom training, he followed up the courses with on-the-water experience for the students both on local lakes and in the British Virgin Islands. Congratulations Norm for a job well done! John Venema and members of the Salty Dogs and Boulder Valley Sail and Power Squadron
Volume 35, Issue 6 Page 6 New Members Sail & BBQ Saturday June 4 The New Member Sail & BBQ will be held at Chatfield on June 4 th. I will be there sometime early morning to make sure we get a BBQ cooking spot. I should have banners flying and a cooler or three containing the food and libations. We will serve lunch at 11:00 a.m. and then depart for sailing pleasures. Timing should be consistent with the Why Buy club timing, which, I believe is approximately 12:00. Boat owners and their crew may leave when they are ready. As always, the start and end times are at the Captain s discretion. Menu consists of burgers, brats, and dogs (no insult to the Salty Dogs of course). The cost (which helps to defray the cost of food and associated materials) is as follows: New Members: $10.00 Members: $20.00 Non-Members: $30.00 Need: Greeter, Sign-In, help Burgermeister to help with the making and cooking of the food Boat Owners to share their boats with crew Members to serve as crew on the boats New Members to be afforded a first class sailing adventure Reservations: Your cancelled check will serve as your reservation first come first served. I will not be at the next meeting, but a sign-up sheet will be there. Also, you can mail your check directly to me, with a note in the memo field stating New Member Sail. Make the check payable to The Salty Dog Sailing Club in the appropriate amount as shown above and send to Blair Ohler. Questions: Call Blair

Volume 35, Issue 6 Page 12 Lazarette Bruce Meyer Drowns in Grenada BAREBOAT CHARTER OPPORTUNITY: Interested is sailing on Lake Michigan this summer? Tentative plan is to sail from Traverse City Michigan on July 27 for a week of fun on the water. Approximate cost is $1,000 per person to lease the boat and cover costs of fuel, docking, provisioning, etc. We will plan to fly to Traverse City, or carpool to Traverse City from Grand Rapids, MI (low cost to fly there), or to carpool from Denver. Give me a call or if you are interested and I will set up a planning session to cover all the details. John Venema This Month s Nautical Term Davy Jones Locker According to mythology Davy Jones Locker is the final resting place for ships that sink, articles lost overboard, and sailors who drown. Thus it became the sailor s phrase for death. Some believe Davy Jones was a Welshman but an older school claim the name is a corruption of Duffy Jonah duffy being the Negro word for ghost and Jonah the luckless biblical figure. In contrast, sailors who die ashore go to Fiddlers Green a satellite heaven filled with chorus girls and unlimited amounts of free rum and tobacco. -from Salty Dog Talk, The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions, Bill Beavis and Richard G. McCloskey, 1983
