Glenmar SA THE COURSE BOARD A Publication of the Glenmar Sailing Association Tod Herrick, Editor VOL: 34 Number: 8 September 2015 Boat/US Group Mbr. # GA S DSC GIN: Commodore s Report: It is sad that Labor Day has come and gone. It is the unofficial end to a marvelous summer for Glenmar. We have had so many activities: cruises, races, pot luck suppers, the corn roast. We have not had a general meeting over the summer; instead, we have been sailing, racing and cruising. What a fabulous summer it has been! Great weather, not the usual high heat and humidity, and we actually had some WIND! NOTICE OF MEETING SEPTEMBER 22, 2015 MIDDLE RIVER YACHT CLUB 200 Nanticoke Rd. Essex, MD Doors open 6:30 Meeting starts: 7:00 Speaker! Ken Mercer Firestorm Dragon Lady had her sails furled during the Labor Day Cruise as her crew was overseas, plying the waters off England. Her crew takes part in a reciprocal agreement with the Little Ship Club of London where they enjoy the local s hospitality on a boat in England. Now, the time has come to start our usual routine of Board Meetings the first Tuesday of each month, and, General Meetings the fourth Tuesday. Our next General Meeting will be 22 September, and Vice Commodore, Brett Sorensen, has a speaker for that evening from our own membership, so, be sure to attend. Some of the best sailing of the year is still ahead of us. The Fall is usually a reward for the heat of summer, this year it is the icing on the cake. Sandra Allen Commodore Please review your contact information! It s important that I have up-to-date addresses so you keep getting the mailings from your club. Additionally, if you would like to receive mail in more than one address, please send the address to me so I can include your address. We now have the ability to send s to multiple addresses. Please those addresses and/or corrections to me at: gladrags@comcast.net and I will update them. Tod Herrick, Communications Officer 1

Vice Commodore s Report It is hard to believe, but summer will be fading into fall very soon. This means that we will return to our general meeting schedule on Tuesday, September 22. Our speaker will continue the safety theme of late, but will focus inshore. Fellow Glenmar member Ken Mercer, with Firestorm, will discuss personal preparedness at home against a disaster. He will provide attendees a copy of "Disaster Ready People For A Disaster Ready America", by Jim Satterfield. The book goes through a step by step approach in preparing yourself and your family for any disaster or crisis. Discussion topics will include: 1. Identifying your risks where you live. 2. Assembling your contacts list. 3. Your communication plan. 4. Should you stay or go? 5. Where to go and what to take. 6. Plan for your pet. 7. Copies of documents you should have with you. 8. Food, water, and supplies in your go bag. 9. What to do when you travel on vacation. 10. etc... Please come out on Tuesday to support Ken, share your stories from the summer, and possibly discuss plans for fall sailing... See you Tuesday. Brett. Rear Commodore s Report What a summer! We have had a great season of cruises this past summer and it s not over yet! The fat lady, she did not sing! We have 2 cruises coming right up and then we will turn it over to the fat lady to sing her swan song. We have two new members! Please welcome Marc and Frederique Lienard of Champagne, who keep their boat at Baltimore Yacht Club and joined just prior to the Family Cruise. Plus one other who signed on after joining us on the Labor Day Cruise; please welcome Ron Harbin on True Blue, a Pearson 31 who keeps his boat at Bowley s Marina. Hopefully, you ve read last month s Course Board which detailed our fantastic adventure cruise to the Rappahanock River. We had good participation and even helped bring back some long time members into cruising again. As an added bonus, the cruise was so inviting that we encouraged a member to join Glenmar just to go on it and join the fun. This boat was Champagne (a second one in our fleet) who sports a French crew. Frederique and Marc Lienard are super nice people who fit right in with the rest of us and report that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. If you crew on their boat, I hope you know French because that s the language spoken aboard! Not to worry, both Marc and Frederique speak excellent English (Marc more so) but they wish to encourage their daughter, who occasionally sails with them, to speak fluently in French. For those of you thinking about next year, I am planning on a local, northern bay cruise similar to the one I did a number of years ago (some still have the T-shirt). That will enable people who can only take a week off to more easily join us. Besides, after 2 years of adventure cruises, it s time to switch it up! Yes, I guess that means I am thinking of another year on the Board but don t let that stop you from applying for that position if you really want it! We also had the second annual Grandchildren s Cruise, captained by Tom and Meg Conners of Aurora with activity assist by Tom Brown who engaged the children in activities such as the Raingutter Regatta, Rubber Ducky Roundup, Nature study scavenger hunt; Sand Castle building and display; Swimming; Lots of fun and prizes with the Glenmar kids. This was a very successful cruise with many new children involved in the activities. I know they all had a wonderful time. Look for the official cruise report in next month s Course Board! You donations were well spent with many supplies being able to be reused next year. The Conners promise to do this again next year but hope to do so earlier, at the beginning of the season. Tom and Alma Brown of Orion s Child report the following from the Labor Day Cruise which they Captained: Well, based on the feedback that I got it seems that everybody agreed that the weekend was a huge success. On Saturday the winds weren t ideal but most were able to do a combination of sailing, motor sailing and motoring with a sail up. Anytime you enter the Chester River your skills will be chal- (Continued on page 3) 2

(Continued from page 2) lenged by a combination of tide/current and a course that does a 180* turn in the middle of it. Saturday night s destination, Grey s Inn Creek, was beautiful, spacious and nettlefree. This was good because the weekend was fairly hot. The heat was tempered by a light, cooling breeze. We had a very high turn-out (16 boats) on Saturday and the cocktail party was on the Orion s Child/Mandolin/ Champagne raft up. As usual, the food was exceptional and the beverages were cold. It seemed that at times Orion s Child was heeled up to 20* with all of the movable ballast that was enjoying the party. I think we made a good impression on the potential new members that were attending. We were having such a good time socializing that the party broke up pretty late. A total of 17 boats participated. It was a mix of regular members, new members and potential members. With such a high turn-out and such a perfect anchorage it was decided that we would have a hard time finding another anchorage that could accommodate this many boats on the second night of a holiday weekend so we stayed put for another night. A couple of boats did have to leave for various reasons but we were able to contact the only boat that had RSVP d that they would be joining us on Sunday evening and they altered course and joined us in Grey s Inn Creek. This points out why it is important to RSVP with your plans. If you didn t RSVP and you went to Forked Creek on Sunday you would have been disappointed. Sunday was a lazy day filled with swimming, socializing and kayaking. Once again, it was a hot day with a cooling breeze. We capped it off with another, smaller party aboard our raft up. We did a little bit of stargazing and learned about the mythology behind some familiar constellations. Unfortunately, all good things must end and it was time to leave Grey s Inn Creek. I had a wonderful time hanging out with old friends and meeting new ones. I hope everyone else enjoyed themselves and the weekend as much as I did. Thanks to all for contributing to a terrific weekend. If I didn t list your boat I am sorry. Tom & Alma s/v Orion s Child Blue skies, fair winds and starry nights Our next cruise is right around the corner. Greg and Donna Bincarowsky of Champagne (our original) are leading a cruise whose destination will be determined by the wind forecast! I encourage everyone to bring a dinghy aas it makes it easier to get from raftup to raftup, especially during a cocktail party. Speaking of which, Greg is planning on introducing a floating cocktail party on his cruise. What is that? Join us and you will see! The cruise will be September so put it on your calendar of must do activities and join us there! Look for the destination announcement next Wednesday, 9/23/15. After that, there is the Fells Point Fun Festival Cruise the weekend of October 2 4. We are converging on the Anchorage Marina on Friday, October 2 and staying until Sunday, October 4. Those of you, who keep their boats in Baltimore, simply call me on my cell at (717) and walk to the Anchorage where we will assemble. On Friday, we plan on doing a pub crawl starting around 9pm in Fells Point; or perhaps simply a BYOB cocktail party at the marina onboard Mandolin. We will decide there. Then on Saturday, it s off to the festival located throughout Fells Point to enjoy the music, food and crafts at our leisure. If you haven t reserved your slip at the Anchorage, please do so now by calling (410) Let them know you are with Glenmar! Then, that is a wrap for our cruises. I hope you enjoyed the season and implore you to come out more next season. I promise you, you won t regret it! 4 PHRF Fleet Captain s Report As the sun sets earlier and the nights get chillier, we are approaching the end of another season of racing for Glenmar. The Wednesday Nighthawk series have finished. There are but two CBC races left and then the Frigid Digit Series next month is the finale. Hopefully, you will come out and race the Frigid Digit races. This year it is not a CBYRA sanctioned event. Why you ask? Well, because for the past few years they were not well attended. In 2014 there were 5 boats, 2013 there were 8 and in 2012 there were 4 boats. I am basically an optimistic person and had hoped that racers would come and race. But, I was proven wrong year after year. It cost money to have the Frigid Digit sanctioned and without your participation we lost money. So come out and race! The date and times are in your Yellow Book. This past weekend, Glenmar was represented at the Fall Oxford race by that damn red boat. So, it was a little cloudy and a little drizzly, the wind was blowing strong from the south and three foot waves were rolling up the bay. 130 boats had registered for this classic 29 mile race from Annapolis to Oxford. There were multihulls, beach cats, short-handed boats and a lot of cruising class boats mixing it up with the race boats. The A2 fleet, comparable to our Division 1, had 33 boats on the line. We finished by mid-afternoon, rafted at the dock with our competitors, and enjoyed a great evening party at the Tred Avon YC. Sleeping on the boat was comfortable in the cool night with no humidity. Sunday morning was clear and breezy for the start of the 20 mile, Hammond Memorial Race back up the bay to Poplar Island. The start line was set within sight of the clubhouse. It was a spinnaker start and the red boat challenged the Naval Academy boats for the pin end and clear air. The wind built to 18 knots as everyone charged to the first turning mark 3 miles away. There were several reaching legs to get out of the Choptank River. By the time we got to Black Walnut Point and turned north, the wind had settled to a shifty 10 to 12 knots. There was a little chop on the bay as we sailed upwind for the last 7 miles to the finish. More red boat news. Team Kristany was invited to participate in the US Sailing Offshore Championship next weekend September 24 th through 27 th. This is a 3 day regatta sailed out of the Naval Academy using their new 44 foot boats. There will be 10 teams competing in this event. US Sailing had invited teams from around the country to participate. The races will be mix of short to medium distance and windward/leeward buoy races. Your team, that s right we are representing Glenmar, is made up of the crew from the red boat and 2 crewmembers from Liquid Limit II. In my 36 years as a Glenmar member, I am only aware of one other time that a Glenmar team was invited to this event. It was the early 1980 s when the crew from Spartan represented the club. I was on that crew back then with Ed Cilumbrello. Dan Miller and John Scott came with us to fill out the crew needed to race on the old Navy 44 yawls. So wish us luck, we hope to bring home some silver! 4 Next Topic: The Havre De Grace Invitational Race and 6 th Annual Commodore s Cruise on October 3 rd. This is a great event! A good race followed by a good party, great trophies, then you walk into town to sample the local pubs! Here are some details: Havre De Grace Yacht club is holding their annual Fall Invitational Regatta on Saturday, October 4 th. The regatta benefits the John Heffner Jr. fund. John was a US Sailing race officer and had worked in the past as the PRO for Glenmar s Northern Bay regattas. John passed away in 2007 at a very young age. The regatta consists of a race in the morning followed by a great party at the Tidewater marina. There are many options that should accommodate everyone: Ø Race in the PHRF fleets it is a CBYRA sanctioned event, or Ø Race in the Cruising fleet it is non-sanctioned and PHRF certificates are not required, or Ø Cruise to HDG for the party, Ø Get a slip at Tidewater (free slips for the racers), or Ø Get a mooring for the night or anchor out, Ø Join us at the party dinner menu includes: steak/ salmon, sides, soda, beer and wine, Ø Live music at the party, plus door prizes and trophies for the racers, or Ø Enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants in town. Ø Join the GSA racers for a pub crawl after the party!! Dinner tickets are $27pp for adults and $12 for kids 12 and under. If you are cruising up for the party or coming by land yacht, try to arrive by 4 pm to join in the festivities. Go to for the official announcement, the Notice of Race, the Entry form and to purchase dinner tickets. Contact John Flanigan for slip reservations at Tidewater (c). Join us for free coffee and pastries in the party tent on Sunday morning. And finally, there are still many weekend races coming up. Here s a partial schedule: (See the full calendar at ) September 26 th Race to Rock Hall Potapskut SA October 3 rd Havre de Grace Invitational HDGYC October 17 th Frigid Digit GSA October 24 th Baltimore Harbor Cup BCYA October 25 th Francis Scott Key Race Back - RCRA So get out there and enjoy these weekend races, most of them have good parties. Contact me if you have any questions about these races or if you need to find crew. This is the best time of the year to be on the bay!! Glenn Harvey, PHRF Fleet Captain that damn red boat

Portsmouth Fleet Report: The Portsmouth fleet was busy over the summer with Thursday Night Racing. Fran Marinaro, our certified race officer conducted 21 races. Most race nights with two races, and even a few nights with 3 races. And, we still have a race on 9/17, with the Fall Regatta immediately following on Saturday, the 19th. So, while I'm writing this, there are still about 5 races to be sailed. And, the forecast is looking good for those races to happen. Most of the sailing conditions this year were in very light air, with only 2 or 3 nights of heavier air. But, that first heavy air night was pretty exciting, with 3 different boat capsizing on that night. As they say in dinghy racing, "If you haven't capsized, then you haven't raced hard enough". Sonny Dietz won the "First to Flip" award, last year. But, I believe that we have a new winner of the award, Steve Mazza, this year. He capsized just a few minutes (or, was that moments) before Sonny. New member, Tom Thompson, also capsized and was, therefore, also in the running. But, Tom and crew capsized a few minutes too late to win the "coveted" award. Thistle for sale, Clark #2471, Good condition, very crinkly North main & jib, crinkly Quantum spinnaker, extra sails, Aluminum silver mast and black boom, wooden boom, Jib Masters, Harken mainsheet block, serviceable trailer that will have New bearings. Ready to race but I can't find required anchor. $1100. call Dan At times during the season, the Baltimore County Sailing Center had as many as two Thistles on the water, which made for some good sailing competition for me, as it was then head-to-head, boat-to-boat sailing, against other Thistle boats. At this time, we have about 10 boats in the Thursday night fleet, with about 6 boats racing on any given Thursday night. (And; 9 on one evening.) It would be nice to grow that. So, if you have any interest in improving your sailing skills, or just getting more use out of your own boat, just give us a call. We have even been able to seat people in boats as guest crew, in the interest of giving them the Thursday Night Racing experience. 6 From One of Our Members: Harry Benavent September 15, 2015 Glenmar Sailing Associa on Labor Day Cruise Today we set sail for the Chester River to meet up with the Glenmar Sailing Associa on! I joined Glenmar about two years ago when I was invited to join by Dave Farhmeier. It's a great organiza on that will keep you busy! They have races, fun cruises, cookouts, lectures, mee ngs, and so much more! This cruise took us to Grey's Inn Creek, up the Chester River. This was a fun and relaxing cruise for us as we had just go en back from our month long cruise South. We set sail Saturday morning and the winds were wonderful! Run out of the Inner Harbor, Broad Reach down the Patapsco River, Beam Reach all the way across the bay. When we entered the Chester River, the winds died down significantly, but the current was drawing us into the river at around 0.5kn. Not tremendously fast, but s ll moving in the right direc on! As we rounded the southern channel marker, we made our turn to head North up the river towards our mee ng point. This is when the winds picked up from the East and we were able to sail all the way up the Chester River on a beam reach. It's not everyday that the winds are always blowing in the perfect direc on! The Chester River is gorgeous! Calm waters leading to tree lined shores and sailboats everywhere! We entered the creek on a broad reach and sailed straight down between the tree lined shores towards our des na on hidden in the Chesapeake Bay; it was so peaceful. We ra ed up with Dave Farhmeier (Down Home) and Tom Ri er (Twel h Night) who made much be er me than we did and then headed over to the party boats to hang out with new friends. Everyone brought drinks and hors d'ouevres, so everyone got to eat and meet all the other members. As the night drew on, we grew red and retreated back to our boats for a very calm night in some of the most protected waters I've been in. (Continued on page 7) 6

(Continued from page 6) Sunday was a very relaxing day for us. We ate wonderful meals, did some work on the boats, and swam. I tuned my rigging before breakfast while the women did yoga in the morning on the a deck of Twel h Night. The tuning proceeded quickly, only taking about 20 min to do all the shrouds. A er that, I went up the mast of Twel h Night to do an inspec on of his rigging. While up there, I was able to capture a birds eye view of the whole flo lla. When things heated up, we all went for a swim in the pleasantly warm waters of the creek. Dave and I took this opportunity to scrape off any so growth from our boats. This then transformed into another relaxing a ernoon on the water followed by a night of card games. Monday Morning we set sail at sunrise to ride the de out of the creek and river. There was a gentle whisper of wind that was able to push us along at around 2 knots with all the sails up. Along the way, the other members of Glenmar passed by and I was able to get pictures of their boats. (Continued on page 8) 7

(Continued from page 7) Once in the bay, the winds died completely and we dri ed along with the de as it flooded the bay. Thankfully we were out of the river by this point or else we would have been pushed back into the Chester River. In the a ernoon the winds returned and we were able to sail along between 4 to 5 knots as we made our way back to Bal more. We arrived in our slip that night just a er sunset, a er a relaxing sail from a quiet creek filled with good friends and fellow sailors. 8
