2 RACING NEWS Scott Almond, Jerry Pattenaude, Unseasonably strong winds forecasted for 'game day' cancelled the BBSA Championship for the Bold Mariner Cup this past Saturday. Wind readings across the lower bay early Saturday morning showed sustained winds of 30 knots from the NE at multiple locations (South Island and Cape Henry). There is discussion about the possibility of rescheduling the event if a suitable date with no conflicts can be found. Registration is underway for BBSA's signature event of the summer, the Leo Wardrup Memorial Cape Charles Cup. Online entry and payment is available at There is still time to get in without the late fee (early bird deadline is July 17 th ). You don't want to miss this highlight of the summer! In other exciting sports news: The Yanks are knocking on the door of 1 st place in the American League East (tune in to YES every night for top-shelf baseball action), the Tour de France has started (tune in to NBC Sports Network to see some of the best athletes on the planet), the FIFA World Cup final is this Sunday (tune in to Fox to hopefully see England beat France), and the Volvo Ocean Race is over; the American team (Vestas 11 th Hour ) placed 5 th overall. 7 Review of Recent Cruises Norfolk Harborfest Cruise Captain John Scott leads the BBSA/HYC, OPCYC fleet in the 42 nd Norfolk Harborfest cruise. Over 20 vessels participated in Friday s parade of sail and the weekend s festivities. Many anchored at Hospital Point, some nestled in Freemason Harbor and a few were at the Waterside Marina. Dinghy s crisscrossed the Elizabeth River as cruisers enjoyed the entertainment, food and educational activities. Cocktail hours were celebrated in grand style followed by community pot-luck dinners aboard. Saturday nights fireworks were again a spectacle not to be missed! And, the weekend weather could not have been more favorable. Here are some of the vessels participating in this year s Harborfest America s largest longest-running free maritime festival: Summer Wine, E, Blew J, Amara, Hectic, Oh Sheet, Blue Ghost, Shangri-La, Fin & Tonic, Pirate s Passion II, Bonita, Holo Kai, Lio Kai, Saulty, Ole, Elysium, Different Drummer, Beau Soleil, bucky and leslie, Randy Jenkins and more! 8 2018 Summer Sailstice Progressive Dinner Even though we had to move the event indoors, due to weather and heat, it was still a lot of fun. Thank you for all for participating. (Next year we hope to make it a 4 days week-end. Sail up to Fishing Bay for the Progressive Dinner on Thursday and then to Fleets Bay for a Beach Party on Pirate s Beach. BBSA Name Tags: The BBSA name tag has the BBSA Burgee on it along with your name and, if applicable, your boat name. If this is your first order, you get up to 2 free name tags (one per person). The name tags were brought back so we can put a name with that face. So please wear yours to meetings and other gatherings. If it s a replacement, then it s $10/each. 11 Sail Nauticus Academy Youth Sailing Instructor/Mentor Volunteer Sail Nauticus is a non-profit community sailing center located at Nauticus in Downtown Norfolk. Our mission is to positively inspire, instruct, and impact Hampton Roads youth through sailing and maritime sciences. Our flagship initiative, the Sail Nauticus Academy, is a hands-on sailing and STEM education after school program that focuses on teaching lifelong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills to Norfolk youth. We rely heavily on volunteers to further our impact in the Norfolk community. We consider our sailing instructors our most important asset, promoting our mission by teaching sailing, STEM curriculums, and important life skills both on and off the water. Our staff works with youth ages as their teacher, mentor, and friend, helping them navigate their way to becoming successful young adults. Do you have the passion and skills to assist us with this mission? The position entails the following responsibilities: Mentor students in soft-skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and confidence Teach sailing skills to 6 th -8 th grade Norfolk Public school students aboard our Harbor 20 keelboats Ensure safety of students and boats during program hours Provide feedback for student evaluations Participate in staff training and development Assist with other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Program Managers Commit between the hours of 2:30-6pm, at least 1 day per week (Monday-Thursday) through the Fall season Qualifications: Must enjoy working with children, experience teaching children preferred Self-motivated team player Current CPR/First Aid certification (must obtain no later than Fall Training) Current Virginia Safe Boating Certification (this is a free online course) or have a current USCG Captain License (must obtain no later than Fall Training) Sailing experience required *we do offer training for some committed candidates. This is a volunteer position. Sail Nauticus will provide any necessary documentation or reference regarding service hours for our program. Job requirements: Commit between the hours of 2:30-6pm through the Fall season Mentor students in soft-skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and confidence Teach our sailing curriculum to 6 th -8 th grade Norfolk Public School students. Ensure safety of students and boats during program hours Assist with boat maintenance as necessary Provide feedback for student evaluations Participate in staff training and development, Fall Training Assist with other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Program Managers Instructors must also be able to comfortably and safely navigate a busy commercial waterway while ensuring a safe, organized, and educational experience for our kids. Compensation: $17/Hour Qualifications: Must enjoy working with children, experience teaching is preferred Self-motivated team player Must hold current CPR/First Aid certifications Must possess Virginia or other state Safe Boating Certification (this is a free online course) or have a current USCG Captain License. 13 3 Mistakes Boaters Don t Want to Make with a DSC-VHF Radio Article from BoatUS, submitted by Sergio Diehl ANNAPOLIS, Md., May 24, 2018 For recreational boaters, sailors and anglers, having a Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF radio aboard to call for emergency help will always be the fastest way to summon assistance from your closest rescuers. That means that going without one can hurt your chances for a safe summer on the water. Here are three common mistakes boat owners make with DSC-VHF radios and some simple ways to improve safety aboard your boat. Mistake #1: Relying on an old VHF radio to signal that you are in distress If you are using a VHF radio that was manufactured more than 15 years ago, you re relying on old technology. There s probably not a person around that regularly uses a 15-year-old phone, television set or computer. Today s DSC-VHF radios have new lifesaving features, most importantly a distress button that can hail a mayday and relay your position to rescue authorities all at the push of one little red (distress) button on the face of the radio. Mistake #2: Thinking you don t need to bother to register a DSC-VHF and get an MMSI number A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number is a unique registration number that is assigned to your vessel to be used with the vessel s DSC-VHF radio. MMSI numbers are issued by organizations including BoatUS which offer the service at no cost to members or for a nominal $25 fee for nonmembers. The MMSI must be entered into the radio in order to harness all of its power and lifesaving technology. Registering your radio gives potential rescuers important information about you, your boat and whom to contact in an emergency. Mistake #3: Not reading the owner s manual that came with your radio and familiarizing yourself with your radio s features Your DSC-VHF radio manual contains a ton of great information about the features of your radio and how to install it. If your radio is not properly installed or not connected to your boat s GPS or chartplotter, you re shortchanging yourself and perhaps unknowingly putting yourself and your crew in danger if there is a delay in transmission and emergency response. Digital Selective Calling technology can also make your everyday boating better. In addition to being able to send a distress signal with the press of a button, a DSC-VHF radio can privately hail other DSC-VHFequipped vessels or groups of boats without tying up VHF channel 16, the distress, safety and calling frequency. It also allows you to ring (hail) others if you know their MMSI numbers without them having to monitor a particular channel. If you haven t yet purchased a DSC-VHF radio, make it one of your safety-gear equipment priorities this season.
