the Commodore Reports: Michael Jones PDYC Commodore It seems the season is fast approaching and before we know it, opening day will be upon us. Over recent years I have been involved with a number of events at PDYC which have attracted people from all over the state and from the mainland. You know you are in a good club when visitors willingly go out of their way to thank PDYC. And to make their thoughts known about their experiences at our club, is always positive. They comment on the friendliness, the relaxed nature, the willingness of our members to make them feel welcome and ensure they have all the support an help they need during their stay. The racing programme for the year is ready for publishing and a big thanks to Vice Commodore, Peter Sluce, for his hard work on this. It is a packed calendar and trying to fit our events in and where possible find ways to accommodate the wishes of the various associations and clubs in a way that limits conflicts of dates is no small task. The calendar of events will be online shortly and you can start plugging them into your diary early to save the dates. The majority of or division 1 & 2 events are suitable for all types of yachts so start pressing your friends for crew, or maybe you know an owner who hasn t sailed for a while, and see what you can do to get another boat on the water. This year we are looking for support, as always, to help run the club. We are a volunteer club and we need the engagement of our members to help support the activities, events and maintenance of our great facility. Working bees will be a feature as we have a few major projects on the go with the installation of the new launching pontoon and the associated walkway being a major job this year. Grab hold of Richard (Tricky) Wells and keep an eye out to see where you can help as we tackle these and other jobs around the club. Another major issue is the support required to run our canteen. We will be putting together a roster soon and anyone who can help please let me or one of the canteen staff if you see them. It is a great way to become involved and there are plenty of people to help so the task is not too daunting for newcomers to the canteen. The canteen is another major source of income for the club, so its success is critical. And, there is nothing worse than hungry kids, or sailors. Although our season has not yet officially started, PDYC hosted the Sabot Interclub Regatta with 18 boats competing from around the state in spectacular conditions two weekends ago. Our junior members did us proud again, both on and off the water and PDYC claimed the Interclub Trophy against RYCT and Wynyard clubs. The sailing was tight packed and a great indication as to the level of expertise in junior sailing from across the state. Our club is there for all its members, from junior sailing through to our seniors, from racing, to cruising and social members. This year I look forward to working closely with the PDYC Committee and our members to increase participation in the events and activities we hold at the club. These activities are critical to the growth and support of our club in the future. The committee is always looking for ideas to improve our club so let us know if you have some ideas, or things we need to look into. I am currently in negotiations with the weather gods for opening day and our immediate past Commodore, Jack, has left me a tough job, given his success in turning it on for these important days. It will be a great regardless and I hope to see as many of our members there for the start of the season. Bring a friend and show them what life at the PDYC is like, you never know, there may be a new member in waiting, the next junior sailor, or someone who just enjoys the relaxed social atmosphere that id the backbone of the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club. Michael Jones. PDYC Commodore. 3

Bar prices to rise slightly Working Bee All members are invited to a working bee at PDYC on Saturday 20th September am. This is for a general clean up prior to opening day so bring your whipper snippers etc. All help is greatly appreciated so come along, even if only for an hour or two. Kevin Lloyd Bar Officer To cover ongoing rising costs the committee has opted to increase bar prices slightly. The costs for drinks will now be, $4.00 for a standard beer, $4.50 for a premium beer, $7.00 for pre mixed drinks, and $6.00 for a glass of bottled wine. Our prices are still comparatively low. All profits raised contribute to building and maintaining our magnificent facilities, as well as helping fund our great club s activities. Every contribution you make also assists in supporting your lifestyle. Special prices apply on Friday nights, so why not come down to the club and enjoy a relaxing couple of hours from about 6pm until about 9pm.There is a cosy fire on the winter months, or during the warmer nights in summer, relax on the deck with a drink and enjoy the splendid vista over the bay from our wonderful club rooms. You ll probably even get to hear some well worn stories of epic sailing adventures from years gone by. And from past experience, as the night progresses, the winds get wilder and the waves get bigger. But it is always a pleasant relaxing atmosphere. Remember, every dollar you spend helps to keep our club facilities in the best of condition. Tamar sailing challenge Pdyc commodore Michael jones exchanges letters with Jack waldron By JOHN HEPHER A very innovative project was undertaken by Jack Waldron when he organised a number of Laser sailors to make the journey from Beauty Point into Launceston. During the trip up the Tamar 4 River, Jack and the others exchanged letters of invitation between all three yacht clubs on the Tamar to each-other s opening days. From all reports the project was a great success with PDYC sailors Josh Harriss, Josh Jones and Tom Cooper participating.

The vice- commodore reports: Peter Sluce Vice-Commodore The 62nd Season of the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club will commence on Sunday 5th October with our Opening Day. We have a slight change of format for the Opening Day Sail Past season with TYC Opening on the same day, both clubs will be commencing their sail pasts to put on a great display of sail and power craft on the waters off Beauty Point. The official season PDYC Opening will be at 13:00 by PDYC Patron Peter Kearney with the combined sail past set for 13:50 and the first of the days racing starting at 14:10. We have tried to keep the clubs dinghy, and the keel/trailable fleets racing on the same days during the season, with the exception of major regattas when the club focus and volunteer power will be focused on one regatta, maximising the participation numbers and volunteers to assist. November is an example of this with the Sam s Sails Inshore Championships on the 8th and 9th, there will be no dinghy racing that weekend, meaning it is the perfect opportunity for our dinghy sailors to jump on as crews in the trailable/keel fleet and get some big boat experience, or to help running the regatta. Rolls will be reversed on 22nd and 23rd November with the club hosting its second TSSA regatta for the season. This allows the trailable/keel sailors to assist in the running of that regatta and to take the opportunity to take some of the Sabot sailors on board for the Saturday evening twilight race. We have tried to mix up the sailing season with some different courses and spread Club s major Championship Point s Series throughout the season, giving more opportunity for members to contest these premier championships. All the major regattas are back. The Sam s Sails Inshore Championships, The Classic, Tamar Marine Blockbuster Weekend, and The PDYC Regatta. Along with the popular NS14 MAX Weekends, Saturday Twilights, Single Handed, Two Handed, PDYC Mid-Week, and the Winter Series. The Offshore Series has had a re-vamp and will be sailed as a three race pre-christmas Series following consultation with the skippers and crews. This best suits the entrants sailing programmes and provides crews with a great preparation for the L2H. 5 For the cruising fraternity, we have noted a couple of TYCs programmed events with the Cruise to Port Sorell on the Australia Day Long Weekend, and for the serious offshore cruisers, a trip to Deal Island over the Easter Weekend. For our Sabot sailors the season is already underway with the club having hosted the TSSA Interclub Regatta on the 6th and 7th September. PDYC sailors brought home the Interclub Shield by 8 points from RYCT. Our top Sabot sailor for the weekend and a sign of things to come was Lucy Cooper helming her aptly named Mini-Cooper to second place overall with two race wins, three seconds, and a fourth place. I had the pleasure to OOD the eight races of this regatta and it is an absolute pleasure to watch these greatly skilled sailors racing abnd getting so much enjoyment out of our great sport. Stunning to watch guys and girls, well done. So, we have a great season ahead. Get your maintenance done, get your repairs done, get the mast fixed and get back on the water. At the place to race, or simply cruise. Peter Sluce Vice-Commodore

Turning buoys refreshed Interclub trophy starts a winning pdyc season All ready for another season All thirteen turning bouys have now been refurbished with new shackles and new paint. Thank you Bob Silberberg for painting, Claude Berryman for cleaning, Eric McCormack, for replacing shackles etc, and a special thanks to Chris Walker for retrieving the widely scattered bouys. By PETER SLUCE The sailing season is underway at Port Dalrymple with the State Sabot Association contesting their first regatta for the season, The Interclub, at PDYC. Perfect but chilly conditions greeted the crews with the eight race short course series displaying some brilliant close quartes racing in an eight to ten knot north westerly for the two days. William Wallis from the Royals took the top spot for the regatta in Loose Cannon with six straight wins after discards. PDYC s Lucy Cooper had a great second day taking two wins in Tssa interclub sailors Mini Cooper looking like it needs an S after the name. Third for the regatta was Brendan Crisp in XLR8. In the juniors, PDYCs Taylor Edmunds took the win in Lone Wolf from fellow PDYC members Sam and Elysha Jones in Crude Oil, with Hamish Thompson from Wynyard taking the coached division in Wild Wind. The final tally for the weekend saw the Interclub Trophy residing at PDYC for the year with the top four PDYC sailors racking up 100 points to take the win from the Royals top four on 108 points. 6

And a huge thank you To Dave allen There are a number of people who are truly dedicated to our club. One of those is Dave Allen. Those who run a business will understand just how time poor most in that position are. Most however will not appreciate the time involved in compiling this newsletter. Dave Allen has done just that for the past couple of years, juggling business, family and, sailing his other love, Obsession, to great success, and I m sure, great personal satisfaction. Dave has left me with rather large shoes to fill. So, from all at our wonderful PDYC, a huge thank you Dave for the amount of work you have put in keeping us all informed. I hope I can live up to Dave s standards and produce a newsletter that will be of as much value to our members as has been the case over the last few seasons. We wish you well with the new hours you will have. The new launching pontoon PDYC IS SEEKING DONATIONS The new launching pontoon is sitting high and dry. The pontoon itself has been completed and is ready to go in the water but there is a matter of the walkway and other infrastructure required to finish the project. There is a large amount of funds required to complete the pontoon. With that in mind, the committee are appealing to members, especially those who regularly use the trailer park boat ramp, to chip in. Donations of $50.00 or more will be acknowledged by a plaque bearing the benefactor s name, attached to the walkway. Please dig as deep as you can so we can finish this much needed facility and make climbing the ladder at the end of the current jetty, and falling off it, a distant memory. 8

Season almost underway A typical PDYC fleet on its way to the windward mark By PETER SLUCE Thanks to all those members who took the time to give their comments on the draft sailing season at Port Dalrymple Yacht Club. The final tweeks are underway on the sailing programme, but many of the major dates for the season are set, so jot them down and start planning for your years sailing. Opening day is Sunday 5th October with the Official Opening to our season by Patron of PDYC, Peter Kearney at 13:00. There will be a combined sail past with PDYC and TYC at 13:50. Both clubs are celebrating their opening days on the same day. The first race of the season will start at 14:10. The Inshore Championships are set down for the 8th & 9th November, straight after the long weekend to give plenty of crewing opportunities for our junior sailors. The Classic is a month later on Saturday 6th December as the final event for The annual Blockbuster Weekend is on Saturday 31st January and Sunday 1st February. The March long weekend sees PDYC hosting the State Titles for the Sabot Class with the PDYC Regatta to decide the King and Princess of The Tamar to be sailed on Sunday 22nd March. These are the major events for the year but as always there is much more racing programmed for the coming season, so start your preparations early. By JOHN HEPHER Increasingly, skippers are finding themselves short handed. It is not only PDYC, many other clubs are reporting a drop off of sailing crew, with many leaving the sport CREW WANTED due to age. There seems to be a generation gap of those who are leaving sailing to those who are now emerging from the junior ranks. Some of us desperately need crew to be able to join the fleet. If any members are aware of friends or family that would like to crew on a weekend, please inform the committee and arrangements can be made to get them aboard. 9

Dacron, Full Radial Cut, Full Batten Pockets, Loose Foot, 1 Reef, Sailbag. $ Contact John Hepher IDEAS Anyone? Discussions have been bandied round recently regarding the need to increase the revenue of PDYC. We are not broke! But. Costs, as always, continue to rise and equipment and infrastructure keeps needing maintenance. It is an ongoing problem for all clubs and community organisations, and to add to that, new regulations and compliance issues are always being introduced by governments and governing bodies with regards to legal and safety issues. OK, we are increasingly living in a Nanny State. With that in mind, it would be a good thing to use our existing clubhouse facilities to a fuller extent and maybe run some social events. Ideas are encouraged, so please inform your committee of your ideas to help raise revenue, but every good idea also generates the need for someone, or a number of someones to put it into reality and as always, we will need volunteers. By JOHN HEPHER Gee it s great to have a salad roll and a coffee, or a BBQ after sailing. Well, somebody has to organise and provide us all with those facilities. PDYC is a volunteer club, and members should all dig in, where possible, to assist in allowing fellow members the comfort and sustenance we can provide. Right at the moment though, there is a desperate need for volunteers to run, or assist in the canteen. Special thanks must go to mem bers who have provided this service in the past, but there is a limit to the amount of time we all have Help needed available. Thank you to Mel Jones and Leah Blazeley for filling in the gap. If anyone can pitch in and help out in the canteen on race days, or other functions, PLEASE, we all need your support. It has been said that much fun and frivolity occurs behind the canteen counter! BE IN THE FUN! And while I m on the soap box of contributing, This newsletter is always looking for contributions. If anyone has a story or a photo that they think needs publishing, don t hesitate to let me know. This is YOUR newsletter. 10

Discover Sailing day Clean bums, must be the start of the season Sun Oct 26 Port Dalrymple Yacht Club, along with many other yacht clubs throughout Australia are once again holding a Discover Sailing Day. Interested people are invited to participate in a chance to discover sailing in the hope that it will encourage more participation in our sport. Either racing, or cruising. Those wishing to take part will have the option to go out for a short sail with an experienced sailor, have a look around the club facilities and find out about the programmes and sailing experiences available. There is something for the whole family and even kids as young as five years old can sail when accompanied by a parent of guardian. People of all-abilities are welcome. Sailing also provides for the disabled. There is a program for the disabled, and some clubs have vessels specifically to cater for those with special needs. The Discover Sailing Day is free and all boats and equipment are provided by the club. All you need to bring is clothes and shoes with non marking soles, that don t mind getting wet, a hat, sunscreen, and an adventurous attitude, and sense of humour. Tamar sailing challenge 11

Trailer Park members: It s Mowing season Owners of boats in the trailer park are reminded that it is their responsibility to keep the area under their boat mown and tidy. The trailer park is mown during working bees and we try to mow under boats where it is possible. However, we can t move boats that have flat tyres or locked hitches. You have a couple of options: Leave a key for your hitch with trailer park manager, Dave Blazeley. Or mow it yourself. The club has a couple of mowers so you won t have to bring one from home. If the crew can t get under your boat, you may be billed. Having the trailer park looking neat reflects well on the entire club, and avoids damage to the mowers from hitting objects obscured in long grass. Club courtesy Dinghy Once again, a reminder to members about the use of the club s courtesy dinghy. The dinghy is provided for members use to retrieve from, and deliver boats to and from their moorings. The use of this dinghy should be limited to a MAXIMUM of 15 MINUTES ONLY. It is NOT acceptable for members to take the dinghy out to their moored boats and keep it there while working on boats for extended periods. If such work is required please bring your boat into the pontoon, or use your own dinghy. Please be aware that others want to use the dinghy and having it alongside your moored yacht inconveniences others who have every right to expect that the dinghy will become available for their use after a short period of time. All people using the courtesy dinghy MUST WEAR PFDs at ALL TIMES. Moorings Members who would like to have a mooring position in the PDYC controlled area should apply in writing to the committee. A position will be allocated by our Mooring Officer, Craig Titmus ( ) if available. The POSITION ONLY is allocated. The tackle is the responsibility of the member. Current mooring owners within the PDYC controlled area are reminded that in the event of resignation from the club or vacating the mooring site, the tackle only may be sold. The mooring SITE will revert back to the club for further allocation. The tackle should be removed within 14 days unless otherwise arranged with the mooring officer, before your resignation is accepted. Unless these safety rules are complied with, the committee will have to consider withdrawing the Courtesy Dinghy facility in order to reduce the risk to club operations. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated. Slipway Port Dalrymple Yacht Club has a number of cradles and slipway facilities for hire. The slipway is always busy so it is a good idea to make plans and book your haul out and cradle well in advance. Please be aware that if you have not cleaned up you can be charged. Bookings can be made with Claude Berryman. Call
