National Climate Service perspective : DRIAS and Climat HD Patrick Josse Head of Climatology and Climate Services C3S 1st General Assembly, Toulouse
Summary Summary of Climate Services Development at Météo-France Example 1 : DRIAS Example 2 : Climat HD C3S and National Climate Services Météo-France
Météo-France Climate Services : timeline 2012 : opening of DRIAS portal Providing regional projections over continental France : VIADUC projet : detailed user feedback and service design approach Several ways of improvements identified for DRIAS and ideas for new services 2015 : launch of Climat HD Information on past and future climate for the general public Météo-France 3
DRIAS : context and objectives A growing need for climate information Wide spectrum of users involved in impact and adaptation issues: Research, Institutional Communities, Local Association, Business, Consulting Limited (not straightforward) access to complex information Scientists in need for support To deliver scientific productions To promote research work to a wide public A system to bridge between offer & demand Facilitate and simplify access and use of regional climate informations Provide a service and facilitate the link between users and researchers Météo-France 4
DRIAS : principles Portal designed as a facilitator for users 3 main objectives Contributing to a better understanding : Education area Promoting data discovery : Discover area Providing data and products : Data and products area Different levels of information from the easiest to the most advanced Users support (hotline) Météo-France 5

This image cannot currently be displayed. The VIADUC Project : how can we improve and supplement DRIAS? Users: regional nature parks (natural assets and economic life: forestry, agriculture, pastoralism...) Service designer 1 Intuitions, on field observations, actions, 2 Assessment, reformulation 3 Advices & transfer to production Geography LOCAL CULTURE History LIFESTYLES Where he lives With his own references Météo-France In his project's agenda Chronology PERSONAL HISTORY 11
CLIMAT HD : Climat d Hier et de Demain Climat HD offers an easy and user friendly access to state of the art knowledge on climate change in France, at the national and regional scale. An integrated approach of past and future climate(s) temperature (min, maxi, average) precipitations events (extremes or not) : warm days, icing days, heat waves and cold spells, heavy rain impacts : soil wetness, droughts, snow cover Météo-France 12
CLIMAT HD : Climat d Hier et de Demain (Tablet only) Météo-France 13
Conclusions (1) DRIAS : one of the first french achievement as climate service. A solid feedback after ~5 years of operation : very positive (approx 5000 visits/month. However, in spite of our efforts the DRIAS step remains too high for some users and the combination of past and future changes is a real expectation. Since sept 2015, Climat HD is available as a web or tablet App Météo-France 14
Conclusions (2) The scope covered by DRIAS and Climat HD is relevant for at least 3 components of the C3S (Climate Data Store, Sectorial Information Service (impacts), Outreach) The experience gathered through national Climate Services in Europe can be useful for the C3S (already the case through workshops). National Climate Services will more and more rely on Copernicus Climate Change Service, bringing downstream added-value to meet the specific needs of national users : local and/or very focussed Météo-France 15
