Tobacco, JN Commander s Call The Year is half over Time to Shake a Leg! Shake a leg i.e., get out of bed. Originally a literal call to all those in hammocks so that women staying aboard (when the ship had had a spell in port) could be found. Men tend to have hairy legs and those with smooth shapely legs were easily discovered and sent ashore. Summer is upon us that time of the year with soaring temperatures and stifling humidity. Summer is also the time we sometimes adjust CLSPS schedules to better align with year-end schedules. We will not have our next dinner/business meeting until September 20 th, but we have many activities scheduled between then and now that I hope you will participate in. And, because this newsletter is the combined July/August issue, we have many activities to apprise you of. Cruise to River Dunes, enjoy 99 beer and wine, listen to music by the pool, dine in a first class restaurant, and get a tour of Coastal Living 2007 Idea House! Plan to arrive by 3pm Friday July 23 rd to enjoy the festivities by the pool and then join other members for a fine evening of dinning. Get up (shake a leg), enjoy the Saturday self-serve breakfast, and plan to gather for the 10:30 tour of the Idea House. Sunday July 25 th is your day to return to mundane living. Join us for this fun event send me an ; rtobacco@suddenlink.net. August 28 th is a CLSPS potluck picnic/social being held at Fairfield Harbour Red Sail Park from 1pm to 5pm. RSP is a nice facility with plenty of sheltered picnic benches, rest rooms, drinking water, barbeques, horse shoe pits, and a bocce ball court. We will be providing beer and wine (donations accepted) along with ice, plates, napkins and plastic ware. It is suggested you bring your own serving utensil. Please send Diana Rezab an indicating your attendance; dianarezab@suddenlink.net. August 20 th - 22 th is our summer cruise to Cape Lookout led by Larry Lovvorn; ahoylovv@cconnect.net. Larry currently has 8 boats signed on and is looking for more participants. I expect that sailboats may elect to leave a day or two earlier so as to arrive on 2
3 Commander's Call (Cont.) Friday along with the power boats. This event is two weeks before Labor Day which is approaching fast - better shake a leg. September 11 th and 12 th is our rest stop participation in Bike MS. Those of you who participated in the event last year, found it a very rewarding experience. It is rewarding when riders, who are riding hundreds of miles and collecting thousands of dollars for a very good cause, thank us for being there to provide food and drink. [A CLSPS member, Joanne Somerday (aka Crash); yadremos@suddenlink.net, will be riding in the event and would appreciate sponsorship.] I have agreed to captain rest stops both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday we will have the Ernul lunch stop and on Sunday we will have a rest stop location unknown. The Bridge would like to make this an annual CLSPS civic activity, with the majority of the volunteers coming from our squadron. This year we will need about 12 volunteers for Saturday and about 25 for Sunday. Please contact me about participating: rtobacco@suddenlink.net. EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lt/C Jim Starr, JN The CLSPS Wilmington Cruise - May What a great cruise! Ten days, four crews, three boats, and lots of good times and camaraderie in a great North Carolina city. This is a trip report from Snap Dragon s point of view. Cruise leader Owen Smith did a great job of planning the trip and making all the arrangements. (Unfortunately, Changes in Attitude didn t get to make the trip, but Owen and Carolyn joined us for a day in Wilmington by car.) As is usual for these cruises, the participant list dwindled as the departure time neared with boat problems and other obligations, but we ended up with a solid roster of Cancale (Sherry and Allan Garey), Liberty (Lloyd and Jane Moore), and Snap Dragon (Jim and Sherrie Starr). Snap Dragon left New Bern on May 21, and met Liberty in the Cedar Creek anchorage off Adams Creek that evening. Liberty was coming from a Fairfield Harbor Yacht Club cruise. The next morning, Liberty and Snap Dragon made our way out Beaufort Inlet to Cape Lookout, positioning us for a nice sail across Onslow Bay the next day. On 5/23, we left at 5 am in calm seas and light fog for our long day across open water. There was a little sailing with light winds out of the north, but progress was slow so we motorsailed. It was a pretty day, with dolphins and sea turtles in evidence. We managed to dodge a couple of thunderstorms as we approached Masonboro Inlet and by 5 pm, we were anchored in Wrightsville Beach. The next morning, it was onward to Wilmington! Down the ICW through Snow s Cut to the Cape Fear River, then north. Our planning could have been a little better waiting a few hours would have lessened the adverse current in the Cape Fear upstream progress was slow. We did manage some sailing upstream in squally conditions. The Wilmington waterfront is a great place to visit. The city docks are face docks which 3
4 encompass most of downtown, there s water and power, and slip prices are reasonable. In spite of what Claiborne Young says in his guide, there are no onshore heads and showers available. Apparently the Hilton once allowed cruisers to use their facilities, but management has changed and so has their policy. We found that if you looked like a guest, you could certainly use the bathrooms. Being right on the riverfront puts you within easy walking distance of a wide variety of good restaurants and night clubs, a book store, art galleries, and other shopping. Ice and groceries are a longer walk, but very doable. There are people out and about until late in the evening, and the waterfront area feels safe. Liberty and Snap Dragon had arrived in Wilmington a day ahead of schedule because we chose a good weather day to cross Onslow Bay. We were there on the morning of 5/25, when Wilmington held its National Maritime Day ceremony right next to us on the waterfront. This day honors our Merchant Mariners and their contribution to America s security and commerce. An interesting sidelight is that 126 of the WWII Liberty ships manned by the civilian Merchant Marine were built in Wilmington. After short comments by military and civilian leaders, a wreath was blessed and placed in the Cape Fear River by a Coast Guard patrol boat. That afternoon, Cancale arrived with the Gareys aboard. They had stuck to the original trip schedule, and come down the ICW. We all had a great dinner that night with some friends of the Moores from the Cape Fear Squadron. Carolyn, Owen, and Jane s sister, Anne Roney, joined us the next day with cars, which made an excursion to the USS North Carolina an easy trip. Much of the North Carolina is open for visitors, and a full tour wows you with the size and complexity of the ship. I was impressed with the analog (mechanical) computers used for fire control. Early electronic methods had been tried and found to be inferior. Cancale left Wilmington on the 27 th to make its way back up the ICW. Liberty and Snap Dragon stayed another day in Wilmington, waiting for the winds in the ocean to shift to the south for our return trip across Onslow Bay. As a result, we anchored in Wrightsville Beach on the Friday night of Memorial Day weekend. It was crowded. The next day we headed out Masonboro Inlet at 6 am into wind on the nose and lots of leftover chop from the northeast. It was rough! We motored, then sailed as the wind shifted east, then motorsailed as the wind shifted to the southeast and dropped. It was good to get to Cape Lookout. The next day, Snap Dragon left Liberty at Cape Lookout and headed back to New Bern. In another planning misjudgment, we managed to hit Beaufort Inlet against the ebb tide with an opposing wind while the Memorial Day boat traffic kicked up lots of big wake. Lots more bouncing until we made it past Morehead. We anchored at Cedar Creek, and then had a nice sail back to New Bern. After going to Wilmington and back, Liberty spent another two weeks out, visiting the Okracoke music festival and the District 27 Rendezvous in Oriental before returning home. Way to go, Lloyd and Jane! What a great trip! The Outlook and other great information are available at the CLSPS Website: 4
5 EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Lt/C Kurt Weinheimer, AP MEMBERSHIP CHAIR Pamela & Bob Leahy It is not to late register for either Engine Maintenance or Junior Navigation. EM begins August 10 th and JN starts on September 9 th. If you are interested please either call or me at wkurtsails@embarqmail.com. I will have to order materials soon so don t delay. Chairman, Squadron Vessel Safety Program Richard Boyack, JN Vessel Safety Inspections We will finish our scheduled inspections on Saturday, July 10, at Lawson's Creek Marina Launch sites from 9:00am till 12:00 Noon. If we have heavy activity we may stay longer. After that inspectors will be doing inspections for friends, neighbors and at their marinas. I know from the inspection reports I have received to date, there are still a significant number of Cape Lookout members who have not had their boats inspected. Let's try to set an example to the community and get our boats inspected. It's free and it does not matter if you pass or fail. If you don't pass you will know what you need to comply with the State and Federal regulations. Let's make a good showing for our Squadron. To help share information with our fellow squadron members, the Member Table will be setup for our bi-monthly meetings. This is an opportunity for us to share business and event news. You are all invited to contribute to this information exchange with business cards, announcements, and pictures of interest. We would like to learn more about each other's knowledge, talent, and interests. In addition, the Suggestion Box will be brought to all our socials and bi-monthly meetings for your input. We welcome your wonderful suggestions for the success of our CLSPS, and appreciate your great ideas. The June 21st meeting was very entertaining, with the incredible photo presentation on the area waters by guest speaker John Jacobson. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area, with extensive water access! It's great that participation in this year's squadron events continues to grow. Many thanks to those organizing our meetings, hosting our socials, leading the boating activities, and offering such a variety of activities. The increased attendance at our gatherings makes a huge difference, the increased energy is great! We appreciate those who are actively involved in our squadron, and encourage others to join us. We hope you'll enjoy the many squadron activities scheduled this summer Vessel Safety Inspections Schedule of organized inspections Saturday July 10, 2010 Lawson s Creek Launch Site 9:00am-12:00pm 5

9 PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER P/C William J. Ash, SN, H FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Greg Scotten Chairman of Marketing/PR United States Power Squadrons (941) gscotten@comcast.net May 26, 2010 OLD NAVIGATION CHARTS = DANGER Skilled boaters know that old charts can become dangerously out of date and inaccurate. Unfortunately, many of those same boaters feel perfectly secure with their GPS s electronic charts, believing its data will never age. Even a newly purchased GPS unit may contain a chip that is already obsolete. You also need to recognize that the printed chart you just purchased may have been on the shelf for quite a while not to mention how long it sat on your boat before you used it. To address this problem, the United States Power Squadrons (USPS), the nation s largest boating education organization, has joined with government and leading companies in forming the Alliance for Safe Navigation. This Alliance is co-sponsored by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the US Department of Commerce, Jeppesen Marine, OceanGrafix, BoatUS, and SeaTow. Its goal is to make boaters aware of unsafe navigation tools and practices. Bob Sweet, the National Education Officer of USPS, remarked: Ask a recreation boater the date on his or her charts- Typically their chart information is three to five years out of date. The concern is that while such boaters are not required to maintain current navigational tools, the size of their vessels allows them to move into places where they are vulnerable to shifting shoals and alterations to channel markers. Hundreds of changes may have occurred since their navigation charts were prepared. NOAA reports that in the United States there are around 6400 recreational boating accidents each year. In the past five years, there were 2500 accidents resulting from striking fixed objects and 1400 resulting from going aground. It is clear that boaters must learn to leave their home ports with accurate cruising data. While the United State Coast Guard s weekly Local Notice To Mariners is regularly available with the latest chart changes, few boaters take advantage of this service. To meet this important situation the Alliance has set up a website where boaters can easily check the accuracy of their local charts at: You also can participate in a brief survey that will help all boaters by going to: To become more proficient in cruising and navigating with charts and GPS units, select a course offered through of the United States Power Squadrons USPS University. There, you can find also find seminars about charting and GPS. For more information, contact 9
