1 Page 1 of 6 Newsletter May 27, 2015 CAPTAIN'S REPORT: Carol Hansen Captain Carol announced that we will have a board meeting immediately after next week s luncheon in the Parkview Room. Please get your reports to her by late Monday or early Tuesday. The Nominating Committee is also meeting next week. Please submit any recommendations to them for the positions of Co-Captain, Treasurer, Secretary, and Awards. Committee members are Gina Bowden-Pierce, Martha Metcalf, Vicki Posner, Betty Proper, and Linda Testa. If you have not yet signed your Sailing Center Waiver, please pick one up from the table and fill it out today, or ask Linda Testa to you one. The club will be shut down for only one week this year. Downtown shuts down the week of July 27th and then the Pass-A-Grille location will shut down the following week starting on August 4th. During the downtown shutdown, we will have our annual pool party on July 29th. It will graciously be hosted by Helen Dewalt at the clubhouse at the Water Club on Snell Isle Blvd. More details will follow. Lastly, Carol reminded everyone to sign up for the Pool Olympics on June 10th. We have two full teams and two partial teams filled up already. Sign up today! The "Indoor Olympics" will be held in the ballroom on June 17th. Remember to have your team build a sock horse similar to Flicka (see below). More details will follow. Spectators are welcome!!

2 Page 2 of 6 GUESTS: Trisha Billing s daughter-in-law, Tristan, was our guest during paddleboard fun on Wednesday. She did not, however, make it to the luncheon. CO-CAPTAIN S REPORT: Shirley Rigo Shirley said there were six Prams that went out and learned how to sail backwards on Wednesday. Thank you to Barbara Watson for teaching this skill. There were no capsizing drills held that day. The Pram sailors sailed all the way back to the dock in reverse most of the time. Then, they went out on six paddleboards just for fun. In the meantime, Els Weimken and Trisha Birkenstock were out on a 420 sailboat, so that Els could work toward her Skipper s Hat certification. Thank you to our faithful educators, Janet Walker and Helen Larsen, for their support on the safety boat! There will be no more Wednesday morning sailing races so take advantage of the Tuesday evening races in Ideal 18 s and the Twilight Sailing on Friday evenings. Go out and have fun! On July 1st, we will have our annual Firecracker Regatta which is a relay race on paddleboards!

3 Page 3 of 6 Lastly, there was a question to see if anyone might be interested in sailing from Pass-A-Grille to Shell Island and have a picnic some time during the summer. The Prams at Pass-A-Grille will be used by the summer school youth program for three weeks, but the rest of the summer the Prams are available if we want to put something together. AWARDS: Maureen Twombly No report. FWSA: Charl Hadfield Carol Hansen gave the recap of last week s FWSA luncheon. Seven applications were submitted for the FWSA Young Women s Sailing Award. Salty Sisters sent in three. The winner is Rebecca Schiff who was nominated by the Mainsheet Mamas. She attends the College of Charleston and competes in Laser Radials. The sailing team at this college is ranked second in the country. She will be the Varsity Captain for the school year. She is planning to compete in the 2015 Collegiate Championship in Newport, Rhode Island. Please submit your recommendations again next year. The Mainsheet Mamas will host the FWSA Championships on October 13th. Since the Tampa Yacht Club is under repairs, this competition will be held at Davis Island instead. The date is October 13th and participants will be sailing in Flying Scotts. This year s Spirit Award for both Sunfish and Prams went to the Bitter Ends in Venice. Let s work harder to earn this award next year. Let s get out and sail in these interclubs! Carol reported that Barbara Watson did a great job presenting findings from last week s Buoyancy Test to educate the other FWSA teams as to why SPCHS and our Sailing Center will insist that all Clearwater and IOD Prams need to have flotation in order to participate in next year s Rainbow Regatta. Carol also thanked Barbara Arnold for being the lead weight demonstrator for the buoyancy test. HOSPITALITY: Connie Smith Tears: Connie announced that Jennifer Parramore is not here today because she is at Bayfront supporting her mom who went in for high blood pressure and a TIA over the weekend.

4 Page 4 of 6 Helen Larsen announced that Fay Baynard is doing better. She is managing two hours of therapy per day. Carol Hansen reported that Gloria Davis is home and coming along. She went off oxygen as of yesterday. It was also mentioned that Vanessa McCambridge is home recovering and Selga Sakss is doing better after a recurrence of back troubles. This coincides with the Salty Sisters pool party so stick around for this activity. Charl also encouraged those who will be playing Mahjong to drop by for the demonstration. Charl announced that Zoominations at the Lowry Park Zoo has been extended for another month. Groupon is still running the buy one get one free special. She described the elaborate koi pond and dragon designs and encouraged everyone to go. The Kayak Adventure is set for Monday, July 13th. This will be on the Little Manatee River because there is so much shade. We may go to a little Mexican restaurant afterwards or lunch on the water. It is an easy five-mile trip down stream and then a bus brings everyone back to the start.

5 Page 5 of 6 Lastly, tomorrow is the last Movie Night at North Straub Park. This week s movie is Saturday Night Fever, and it starts at sunset. The movie is free, but donations are appreciated. STORES: Sigrid Lovfald & Joy Rudnicki Sigrid modeled a new white over shirt that she can order for anyone who wants it. The cost is $42. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Salty Sister Yearbook Photos Wanted Lisa Avila is asking for photos of any Salty Sister activity including but not limited to holidays, parties, land cruises, field trips, regattas, FWSA activities, and more. She passed out a small yellow piece of paper with instructions on how to get your photos to her. Book Signing Carole Bardes held up the book, Costa Rican Reprise, which was written by William Valentine (otherwise known as Glenda s husband, Bill Shakespeare). She announced that Salty Sisters are now famous because we are mentioned in the book. There will be a book signing at Haslam s Book Store on Sunday, May 31st, at 2pm. Glenda said that if you can t make it to the signing then just buy the book, and she will take some Salty Sister owned books home to have Bill sign them.

6 Page 6 of 6 Bridge Lessons Connie Beckman has returned, so bridge lessons will take place right after Wednesday Salty Sister meetings. Membership Nancy Strite is collecting $50 due payments.
