We have seen many fleets come and go-rebels, Lone Star 13, Lido 14, Y Flyer, Hellcat, M20, CScow, to name a few, but we have also seen added Vanguard 15, Laser, a revitalized Corinthian Fleet, an ever growing Flying Scot Fleet, a vibrant youth program in Opti Prams, the SMU Sailing Team and the Snipes, all of which are quite active. We still have the best race management of one design sailing, that I can say, beats the best of what many other clubs I have seen have to offer. Our CSC is a jewel among many sailing clubs, and you have a large group of committed sailors, board members and members of the club that make it work. Our club is a bargain among sailing clubs. Our dues remained the same this year as last and our membership holds at about 300. Our costs for operations have remained low, even with dock expansion and many needed repairs. Your volunteer help in these areas keeps our costs low. Leukemia Cup Regatta: WE NEED YOUR HELP. This annual event, year 11, is coming to our CSC on April Norm Grail is this year s chair. Over the last 10 years, between CSC and our sister club, DCYC, on Lake Lewisville, we have raised over one million dollars for blood born cancer research. This year we need your help again in putting on our ONLY charity fund raising event. We need help in clean up of the club, food service, auction items, race committee on our lake and Lake Lewisville, the following weekend and in fund raising. If you raise on donations and contributions over $8,500 dollars, you can qualify for an expense paid trip, in most part, to the Fantasy Sail with Gary Jobson of ESPN, World Cup, Olympic and America s Cup fame, this year in New Orleans. PLEASE LET NORM OR ME KNOW OF YOUR INTEREST AND HELP IN HOSTING THIS EVENT. More to come on this. In 2011, your CSC hosted the CHAMPIONSHIP OF CHAMPIONS REGATTA, US SAILING, and under the leadership of Bob Gough and a host of dedicated helpers held a marvelous regatta. 20 teams from across the US, 20 races with boat changes after each race, 20 fairly new Flying Scots loaned by club members, 20 new sets of sails bought by Flying Scot boat owners and a grand time had by all. there was perfect weather and perfect races for this prestigious event. Your CSC received rave reviews by all participants. A special thanks to the many contributors who helped underwrite this eventthe Pullys, the Fetters, the Mikeskas, the Grishams, MARCH

Stolley, Adams, Butlers, Hanson (Laser Fleet), O Connors, Mitttmans, Goughs, Comens, Baynes, Harringtons, Grail, Joneses and Esfahani. Many more helped on race committee and in general around the club. Of SPECIAL NOTE was our 2011 social chair, HOLLY COLLINS, who worked brilliantly to pull of special social events for all and the O Connors for finding homes for all of our guest. Coach America provided bus transportation for our guests. This kind of club activity was a tremendous tribute to our fine sailing and race management programs. Steve McComb, your 2012 PIER COMMO- DORE, is busy putting together a plan for the present and the future of club structures with lots of input from those who have been around awhile and seen the club grow and be built and rebuilt. He is going about this in a way that is a tribute to his home building skills and accomplishments. We will actually have a 5, 10 and future year s plan!! Look for the start of FIRST FRIDAYS beginning in May. This is a great time to show off our club and meet and greet each other and new members and guests. Check the club calendar on our website. You have a very dedicated Board that is addressing the many facets of our club. Why don t you attend a board meeting and see what they do, maybe even volunteer to help? Board meetings are the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00PM, generally at CSC. RACE SEMINAR is on Saturday the 24 th of March, so come and learn how to conduct races and use our equipment, everything from Defibulators to race committee horns. Steve Bell and Bob Harrington, among others will lead this presentation. We look forward to a great year at CSC, but it will take your help, especially for the Race Seminar, Leukemia Cup Regatta, Spruce Up Day (April 14), Board Meetings, First Fridays and our great racing and junior programs. Come join us and help with the Best of the Best. RACE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR Novice sailors and new members are hereby gently ordered, and seasoned sailors are encouraged to attend, the Race Management Seminar to be held on Saturday March 24th: Part 1. Beginning Race Management Training will be held from 9am-10am in the CSC clubhouse followed by hands-on on-the-water training in conjunction with the Corinthian Fleet Hang-Ten Regatta. Lunch will be provided. Part 2. Beyond Beginner s Race Management Training will be held from 10am-2pm in the clubhouse with lunch provided. This seminar led by Steve Bell is designed to give you a thorough understanding of sailboat race management. This seminar will provide in-depth and practical guidance equipping you with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to become a contributing member of a CSC race committee. While you acquire the knowledge to be a competent member of a race management team, you will also gain a keener understanding of the race course ultimately helping you become a more competent skipper. Beginners who attend the 9-10 am portion of this seminar will be able to get a little on-the-water training by assisting with the management of races in an actual regatta. During lunch, a Alvin Skelton, a paramedic, will give a practical demonstration of the AED. Every club member should know where the CSC AED is located and how to use it. Finally, the seminar concludes with an informative session on the proper use of the committee boat and rescue boats. Your hoping to see you Saturday morning race dude, Norm MARCH

CSC MARCH & APRIL RACE REPORT Norm Grail Vice Commodore, Race Bill Wilson is ERC for the month of March and Bowman O Connor is ERC of the month of April. Please check the race calendar ( to see if you are scheduled for race duty and, if so, please make sure you attend or find an alternate. The Flying Scot Fleet has had reasonably good sailing conditions with upwards of or more boats on the water many Sundays. The current standings for the winter series may be found at The Mid-Winters are being held at Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans on March The registration form may be found at fssa_mw_2012_entry_form_adobe_version.pdf. Many CSC skippers and crew are making the trek for a fun week of racing and fun. The Corinthian Fleet has become a very active Fleet with 6 or more boats on the line every Sunday, and on Saturday March 24, they will hold their annual Hang-Ten Regatta. PRO Bill Wilson will attempt to start and finish 10 races. If anyone would like to help Bill with race duty that day, please contact him. Current race results may be found at The Juniors enjoyed their first regatta of the season in Austin on March 3-4 to be followed by the Spring Fling Regatta at Lake Canyon March CSC will host the Rock the Rock Regatta March 31- April 1. Greta Mittman is looking for volunteers in helping run the races. We have an active racing season taking shape. Racing every Saturday year around is the Butterfly Fleet and joining them March 17 through April 17 are the Lasers who are duking it out in a Cool Saturday 5-week mini-series. The Butterfly race results may be found at butterfly.pl?read=195. The Laser Fleet will begin their Wednesday Evening Racing Series on April 11th at 6:30pm sharp continuing through October 10th. While the Laser Fleet enjoys an evening of seriously fun racing, the course is open to all boats, and any class with three or more boats will be given a separate start. Just as with the Sunday Fleet races, the Lasers do keep score so they simply ask all others who may be sailing recreationally to acknowledge this. The Snipe Fleet is practicing and looking forward to their Southwestern Regatta coming May Details will follow in next month s Mainsheet. Finally, in this and future Mainsheets is a new section called the Protest Room. Protest room is intended to be a fun way of getting more familiar with the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). Everyone should have a copy of Racing Rules of Sailing and have some knowledge of the rules to become a more competitive and successful sailor. MARCH

CSC DAVITS AND PADS Forest Atkins, CSC Davit Registrar While many see the walkways, club houses, storage areas, restrooms as "club responsibility" and the davits separately as the member's responsibility it helps to not lose sight of the fact that the club is its membership and thus the entire CSC infrastructure is all of our responsibilities. Much of these common areas have been built or completed through membership labor in addition to building and maintaining our davits. Keeping our davits, finger piers and boats in safe working order is equally vital to the longevity-integrity of our club and sailing as a whole at White Rock. Recent adjustments and additions to CSC by-laws were made at the annual meeting this past January to clarify obligations relative to davit and finger piers. It's worth a few minutes to go to CSC's by-laws and note these important changes. You can find the by-laws athe CSCsailing.org website under "Club Info" then go to "Club By-Laws, just in case, here's a link: Along with providing the new davit standards clarification, davit owner responsibilities for the finger pier on the winch wheel side has been added as well under Article II, Section 9 Davit Ownership, sub paragraph (I). Part of my duties as CSC Davit Registrar is to perform davit-pad audits from time to time through the year, particularly in February-March where the weather can be cooperative enough to support davit and boat maintenance. If issues-concerns such as inoperable-marginal davits, finger pier hazards, neglected boats or empty davits are noted I then notify the affected member to help develop a reconciliation plan. The vast majority of responses have led to effective and timely responses...thanks! Lastly I wanted to mention that there's a significant appetite for board boat pads and thus a waiting list of recentnew members looking to keep their boats at CSC. Many of the board boats have not been sailed in some time, so please consider helping support new members through the possibility of making use of the new vertical racks for storage to allow more active sailors pad spots... btw...the rack yearly fees are half that of the pads too! Most importantly...get out and go sailing! CORINTHIAN SAILING CLUB WINS 2012 DALLAS AWARD Kelly McCartney, Board of Review US Commerce Association I am pleased to announce that Corinthian Sailing Club has been selected as a winner of the 2012 Dallas Awards in the Membership Sports & Recreation Clubs category by the US Commerce Association (USCA). The whole regatta, including meals for the skipper and a crew member, is only $ The planning and fundraising for this fun regatta is well underway. Heading up the Food and Facilities Committee and CSC members Sheila Bower (shebower2000@yahoo.com) and Kerry Cole (kerrycole@sbcglobal.net) and Greg Wallace (greg_in_dallas@sbcglobal.net) handling the Facilities functions. We have quite a few volunteers who have stepped forward to help and can use many more. The Race Committee Chair person is still open and up for grabs. Bob Gough and Steve Bell will represent CSC at DCYC the following weekend as the Principal Race Officers (PRO) for the J boat and PHRF courses. We already have numerous volunteers for assisting the PROs run the races at DCYC. Alanna Strong (secretary@cscsailing.org) has graciously stepped up to take charge of the auction by heading up the Auction Committee, and Lisa Olsen has graciously agreed to seek regatta sponsors, awards, and much more by heading up the Sponsorship Committee. We have a few volunteers already and can always use more. Thank you to all who have volunteered to date! If you would like to help with any or all of these activities, please the person you would like to assist. All your time spent helping with this cause counts towards your 8-hour annual service requirement. Please, please!! I am making a plea for each member of CSC to ask their favorite restaurant to donate a dinner for two that will be included among the auction items. It would be fun to have numerous gift cards or certificates to familiar and unfamiliar dining establishments of all types for each of us to bid on. Contact me for donor certificates so each donor may deduct their contribution. Thank you, thank you!! To date, we already have numerous items donated for the auction, and we have sponsorships committed from Doctor s Hospital at White Rock Lake and from CSC member Dave Adams. Thank you to both for your generosity! MARCH

CORINTHIAN FLEET NEWS (FLEET NO. 1) Mark S. Mihm, Fleet Captain Corinthian Fleet No. 1 continues to grow, with new fleet members coming on board and 6 fully restored boats this year is shaping up to be a great year with 6 regattas and 2 new racing series. We just finished the Frostbite Series, with the January/February Sunday series occurring no matter the weather conditions. An average of 8 boats took the line and competition was excellent. This year, we started the Crew Development Series, which consists of a 3 week course to teach new sailors terminology, skills, and strategy to actively participate in racing. A curriculum was developed by Burt Gilson that covers topics that take each student sailor through progressive steps in a hands on lesson plan guided by 4 experienced captains. The lessons include "dock talk" sessions to discuss the rules of racing, right of way, flags, etc. Upon completion of the 3 Wednesday evening classes, the sailors will be well prepared to get out there, sail competently, and land their boat at the dock. Club Wireless LAN Settings Network Name: Security: Shared Key: CSC-Wireless PSK2 Personal CSC As most people have noticed, the VIP is nearly complete with some key finish out work remaining, such as exterior siding and painting to match the main clubhouse. The VIP is a great venue for club events and has the best views on the lake. We are anticipating doing some of this work on Spruce Up Day and welcome anyone experienced with installing Hardiboard siding plank to let us know. V15 FLEET NEWS (FLEET NO. 10) Philip Sterling The V15s are back this season with 2 new boats for the season - one from a new member and the other the recently acquired fleet boat, which was generously added to our fleet by the club. So far we have 6 dates lined up and have extended an open invitation to both the SMU sailors and the Snipe Fleet. We also have recently gotten some s from interested new members, who will be coming to check out the fleet races soon. We will be racing 'college style' with shorter courses and regular rolling starts to get in as much competition as possible. The fleet looks forward to a great season and are currently working to firm up the circuit dates. BUTTERFLY FLEET NEWS (FLEET NO. 20) Brad Moulton Fleet 20 is excited to announce the Butterfly Single Hand National Regatta will be held at White Rock Lake this summer. Our responsibility is to guide the efforts to grow our membership, help assimilate new members into the club, manage the billing and collection of dues/ fees, process new membership applications and maintain the club roster. We are very busy right now with the collection of dues and fees from our 300+ members. By now we are fairly sure all members know, dues & fees for 2012 are due on or before April 1, Invoices were distributed in the 3 rd week of February and approximately 60% of the membership has already submitted their payments. Please remember the club bylaws mandate a Late Fee be assessed for payments received/ postmarked after April 1, Our goal is to have 100% of the dues collected without anyone having to face the Late Fee. We have also started the year off well with seven families being approved by the Board as members since January 1, We all remember what it is like to start at a new place with a new family. If you have family or friends interested in knowing more about CSC membership do not hesitate to reach-out via to membership@cscsailing.org. MARCH

APRIL SHOWERS STARTED EARLY THIS YEAR Due to the rains on March 19th and 20th, the water has risen above the walkways and flooded the clubhouse and a number of the boats in davits are partially under water. PLEASE CHECK YOUR BOATS AND DAVITS. Rain that accumulates in your boat weighs roughly 8 pounds per gallon and you should make sure the drain plug in your boat is removed and not blocked, so that it can drain the rain and lake water properly. If your boat cannot drain water properly, the extra weight may damage your boat, davit, or more. The flooding has caused many of the boats in davits and most of the boats on board boat pads to move, so you should check your boat and secure it if necessary. Check out the pictures of CSC and WRBC taken on March 20, 2012 to the right. Please check the CSC website for updated registration information for events. For young sailors interested in racing, Bruce Hvidsten will coordinate a racing series. The Rock the Rock Regatta, a TSA circuit event, will be hosted by CSC on March 31- April 1, and Michael and Greta Mittman are regatta chairs. Please contact Greta or Michael if you would like to volunteer for race committee or to help with facilities. Adult Sailing Gretta Mittman and Red Dog Jones led classes in May & June 2011, and it was a well attended program. We are looking for one new leader this summer. If you d like to volunteer, please Greta at gretamittman@yahoo.com. In addition to normal classes, Renee & Steve Comen are working on some activities to attract the 20 to 30 year old crowd. Special Olympics 2011 was an exciting year for the program. Anderson Jones and one of our own Special Olympians, Curtis Brown, succeeded in winning the only gold medal for the United States in the Special Olympics World Games in Greece during the summer of The program promises another fulfilling year. Steve Comen will manage the Special Olympics events beginning in the fall. If you would like to volunteer once a week in the evenings in the fall, please Steve Comen at ed@cscsailing.org. MARCH

PIER REAR REPORT Steve McCombs The CSC Board is continuing past efforts at CSC to create an attractive and sustainable facility for all of us to enjoy. This year for our major project we are currently analyzing and planning major upgrades to the clubs electrical system. Once the cost estimate for the electrical upgrades is established we will be addressing other projects as prioritized by the newly formed CSC Facilities Master Plan Committee. This Committee will be developing a Master Plan that is intended to be used by future CSC boards to provide continuity of vision and construction standards from year to year. It is envisioned that the master planning committee will remain intact to review yearly plans and provide guidance to future boards. It is suggested that the plan be reviewed and updated periodically including an implementation timeline looking out about 3 years. Committee members include: Steve McCombs, Frank Richards, Forest Atkins, Bob Gough, Norm Grail, Bob Harrington, Greta and Michael Mittman, and Richard Wade. The Master Plan will include a: Facilities history and inventory, Growth plan for docks, davits and common use facilities, Prioritized list of future projects to upgrade and expand the club facilities, and Design criteria and construction standards to guide the implementation of future projects. The Master Plan will help guide future projects at CSC, therefore, your thoughts on improvements are very important. Please me at s.mccombs@sbcglobal.net to provide your thoughts on future improvements for CSC. If you would like to address the committee please let me know in advance. You are welcome to attend the working Committee meetings tentatively held each Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the Club House. Finally, please mark your calendars so you can attend the CSC Spruce Up to be held on Saturday, April 14, We desperately will need your help to handle the many projects we are planning. It is also a great time to help meet your work hours for Steve McCombs s.mccombs@sbcglobal.net MARCH

PROTEST ROOM 1 Quiz Boat S (on starboard tack) touches the finishing mark on her leeward side, bears away, gybes, then immediately re-crosses the finishing line on port tack and tacks to starboard tack. Ashore, S reads in the race results that the race committee has scored her Did not finish. She request redress under rule 62.1 (a). Redress, and in the hearing claims that she sailed the course, took her penalty and finished correctly. You are on the protest committee; how would you decide this? Answer Uphold the scoring of the race committee. Rule 44.2, Penalties at the Time of an Incident, requires that a boat taking a penalty after touching a finishing mark return completely to the course side of the finishing line before finishing. Boat S took her penalty by making on turn that included a gybe and a tack, but she failed to then sail completely to the course side of the finishing line before crossing it, and as a result she did not finish (see definition of Finish). Rule A5, Scores Determined by the Race Committee, permits the race committee to score a boat Did not Finish without protesting her of holding a hearing. PROTEST ROOM 2 Quiz Boats X and Y, on a downwind leg, are converging on steady courses for ten seconds. X is to Y s right (looking downwind), and is sailing on port tack with the wind directly astern and her boom on her starboard side. Y is sailing by the lee with the wind coming over her starboard stern quarter and her boom also on the starboard side. They have contact with no damage or injury, and both protest. You are the protest committee; how would you decide this? Answer Boat Y is penalized for breaking rule 11, On the Same Tack, Overlapped. Whether a boat is on port or starboard tack is determined by her windward side (see definition Tack, Starboard or Port which refers to the definition of Leeward and Windward). The leeward side of a boat is the side that is or, when she is head to wind, was away from the wind. However, when sailing directly downwind or by the lee (i.e., with the wind coming over her stern from the side on which her mainsail lies. The opposite side is the windward side. Y has the wind coming over her stern from the same side that her mainsail is on (starboard), so the windward side is the other side (port). Therefore she and X are both on port tack; and as the windward boat, Y is required to keep clear under Rule 11. Y also broke rule 14, Avoiding Contact, because it was possible for her to have avoided hitting X. Whether or not X could have avoided contact when it was clear to her that Y was not going to keep clear is a moot point. X, as the right-of-way boat, can only be penalized under rule 14 if the contact results in damage or injury [see rule 14(b)]. Answers are based on the Racing Rules of Sailing for Dave Perry s 100 Best Racing Rules Quizzes is published by the United States Sailing Association (US Sailing). For a comprehensive explanation of the rules, read Dave Perry s Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2012 which is also available from US Sailing or MARCH
