1 CORINTHIAN SAILING CLUB Commodore s Letter 1 First Friday Festivities 3 CSC April Race Rpt 4 Leukemia Cup Regatta 6 Education & Youth Sailing 8 Protest Room 8 Fleet News Corinthian Fleet News 9 V15 Fleet News 9 Butterfly Fleet News 9 Laser Fleet News 9 Membership 10 April Calendar 11 COMMODORE S LETTER Red Dog Jones By the time you get this, we will have had the April Spruce Up Day activities at CSC and Splash Day races on Sunday the 15 th of April, for those who are not still doing their taxes and if we were not rained out. I hope you helped in keeping your club in tip top shape for this annual rite. STEVE McCOMBS, your pier commodore, outlined an ambitious plan to accomplish work projects and I trust they were all done!! Steve and his committee are ambitiously outlining a 5 year plan for work at CSC. This will help with budgeting and addressing needs near and far. By now, MEMBERSHIP DUES for are due and most have been paid. As usual, there are a few tardy ones and this increases the work load for your volunteer membership commodore, MIKE HANSEN. Mike has done a marvelous job in getting records up to date, sending out dues notices, making changes on the official club roster, keeping up with davit and pad ownership. Mike has also sent information to our new members welcoming them and giving them information about CSC. He is doing a great job! We all owe him our gratitude and thanks. With the recent SPRING RAINS AND STORMS, we have had the usual flooding issues at the club. Generally the major damage is silt/mud left on the docks, but given the recent years work on walkways and piers by, among others, member Ken Brown, we do not have many of them floating away during floods. I recall many a time trying to find walkways and piers after a flood and trying to get them back where they belonged. Of course I always kept the best ones for my davit!!!! HOWEVER, the rains always manage to fill a few boats and cause them to hang precariously or dangerously in the cradles or come off of their cradles. Among others who walked the piers and called the davit owners, I called the owners and either left word or spoke to them about their boats. PLEASE CHECK YOUR BOATS AFTER THESE STORMS. WE CANNOT ALWAYS DO YOUR DUTY. As is usual, when any inclement weather approaches, our KATHRYN AND BOB HARRING- TON come to the club before the lake rises and make sure that there is no damage to the supplies and equipment that we have. The items kept in our cupboards in the clubhouse are removed and stored high, the items in the tack room that could be damaged are moved high and your club is saved dollars by their efforts. Then, to top it all, they come out as the waters recede and start power washing the docks. A great big THANKS to the Harringtons for this and all they do! APRIL
2 We had many volunteers come to the lake after the water receded to clean and repair the club. I am sure I will miss some, but at least these members come to mind who took a few hours of their time to come and clean up: Gina and Bill Wilson, Kathryn and Bob Harrington, Steve McComb, Carter Stack, Tim and Mary Adams, Kyle Phillips, Roland Foerster, Steve Benenson, Norm Grail, Jeff Snoyer, Dave Barrett, Red Dog Jones, and I am sure I missed some, so let me know if you were there and we will acknowledge in the next MAINSHEET. Speaking of Bob Harrington, he also keeps all of our equipment in tip top running order. However, this year he has decided we need a new committee boat, so he asks your approval of the one pictured to the right. LAKE ACTIVITY: In addition to all that CSC does, races, entertainment, regattas, rescue, clean up, adult sailing, youth sailing and much more, we have a lake that is ever more popular and being put to use. WHITE ROCK BOAT CLUB at the north end of the lake is undertaking a major redo of its facilities. They will host the BUTTERFLY NATIONALS in June. Also, there is talk of a new rowing club facility going in where the old Snipe Club used to be, between WRBC and CSC. It will be quite an ambitious project. Our member, AMANDA BOERS, is a liaison with the DALLAS UNITED CREW. The picture below gives you an idea of what their impact will be on the lake. LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA: IT IS UPON US. Our Club will host on April Come by Friday after work and enjoy music, food and setting up for the weekend of races. This is a FUND RAISER for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of North Texas. If you wonder about their accomplishments, what they have done for so many affected by blood born diseases, you can ask me or Sally Jones. Your dollars have helped in the struggle to beat these dreadful diseases. Let s find a cure and put them out of business!!! Please come to CSC that weekend and bring friends and make contributions by donations or buying meals or other items for sale. Then, help by racing or serving the next weekend at Lake Lewisville at Dallas Corinthian Yacht club on race duty and participate in their activities. A great time will be had by those there. Your race commodore, NORM GRAIL, will gladly accept your offer APRIL
3 of help or money to make this 11 th annual event a success. Please let your commodore know if you have any questions about this potential new neighbor. They will have several more town meetings to determine neighborhood impact. AMANDA is also a liaison with our Park and City Departments. As you may know, the City of Dallas has monies for some major park improvements, which might include paving to the parking lots and shore abutment for erosion control. I would be happy to show you some plans for this park. We need to be thankful for work done by the Parks Department in keeping White Rock clean and picked up. Please do your part too. EDUCATION: STEVE COMEN AND RENEE COMEN are again heading up education for adult sailing and youth sailing. Adult classes will start in May, with two sessions for the first three weeks and May and then the same for the first three weeks in June. Stay tuned. The YOUTH CAMPS will be run by a novice sailor named KELLY GOUGH, with able assistance by none other than MASSIE COMEN. MASSIE is commodore of the UT Sailing Team. As always, let your officers know of any concerns you any have for CSC. Thanks for your support. APRIL

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the on-the-water racing, the on-the-dock revelry, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fundraising auction. Please see the Leukemia Cup Report elsewhere in this edition of the Mainsheet for opportunities to volunteer, donate, and contribute to this very worthy cause and to find out about an especially fun on-the-water challenge that shall take place during the pre-regatta party Friday evening. You will not want to miss this! You may review the NOR and register now. Finally, at the recent request of a fellow member or two, the Protest Room, in this edition of the Mainsheet, shall emphasize one of sailings fundamentals the Port/Starboard rule. This month you will find four quizzes that will help acquaint you with this most basic of rules. The Protest Room is intended to be a fun way of getting more familiar with the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). All sailors should have a copy of Racing Rules of Sailing and have some knowledge of the rules to become a more competitive, confident, and successful sailor. How Can You Donate an Item for the Auction? The auction coordinator is Alanna Strong who has graciously stepped up to take charge of the auction by heading up the Auction Committee. I am making a plea for each member of CSC to ask their favorite restaurant to donate a dinner for two that will be included among the auction items. It would be fun to have numerous gift cards or certificates to familiar and unfamiliar dining establishments of all types for each of us to bid on. Contact Alanna or myself for donor certificates so each donor may deduct their contribution. LCR Donations If you would like to drop off your Silent Auction items for the Leukemia Cup Regatta at CSC, Alanna Strong will be available the next two Sundays (April 15th & 22nd) from 12:30-1:00 pm. Contact Steve Comen at steve.comen@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer to help or for registration information. PROTEST ROOM 1 Norm Grail, Vice Commodore, Race Quiz Boats X and Y, on a downwind leg, are converging on steady courses for ten seconds. X is to Y s right (looking downwind), and is sailing on port tack with the wind directly astern and her boom on her starboard side. Y is sailing by the lee with the wind coming over her starboard stern quarter and her boom also on the starboard side. They have contact with no damage or injury, and both protest. You are the protest committee; how would you decide this? Answer Boat Y is penalized for breaking rule 11, On the Same Tack, Overlapped. Whether a boat is on port or starboard tack is determined by her windward side (see definition Tack, Starboard or Port which refers to the definition of Leeward and Windward). The leeward side of a boat is the side that is or, when she is head to wind, was away from the wind. However, when sailing directly downwind or by the lee (i.e., with the wind coming over her stern from the side on which her mainsail lies. The opposite side is the windward side. Y has the wind coming over her stern from the same side that her mainsail is on (starboard), so the windward side is the other side (port). Therefore she and X are both on port tack; and as the windward boat, Y is required to keep clear under Rule 11. Y also broke rule 14, Avoiding Contact, because it was possible for her to have avoided hitting X. Whether or not X could have avoided contact when it was clear to her that Y was not going to keep clear is a moot point. X, as the right-of-way boat, can only be penalized under rule 14 if the contact results in damage or injury [see rule 14(b)]. Answers are based on the Racing Rules of Sailing for For a comprehensive explanation of the rules, read Dave Perry s Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2012 which is available from US Sailing or APRIL
9 CORINTHIAN FLEET NEWS (FLEET NO. 1) Mark S. Mihm, Fleet Captain, Spruce Up Day was a resounding success toward completion of the VIP. The Corinthian Fleet pitched in with every power tool imaginable to do the finish out work on the beautiful new club facility. Extension cords crossed the dock like a mad obstacle course, and if your lights dimmed at your home on Saturday, it was because they were all on at the same time. The Corinthian Fleet hosts Splash Day this year and we look forward to serving our friends at CSC.
