3 COMMODORE EDWARD STEEVES While the weather outside is less than ideal for sailing in Nova Scotia, there is a lot of planning going on around the Squadron these days as racing and cruising committees are busy putting the final details together for the upcoming 2016 sailing season. The cold weather at home has not slowed down our athletes. The past couple of months have been an amazing period for Nova Scotia and Squadron sailors. Check out the great article later in this newsletter, of the 2015 ISAF Youth World Championship and the four Canadian representatives from the Squadron. Sail Canada has recently announced recipients of its 2015 National Sailing Awards and Nova Scotia sailors are part of that distinguished group. Danielle Boyd and Erin Rafuse were named Female Athletes of the Year for their 49er FX campaign, while Paul Tingley and his Sonar team are up for Rolex Sailors of the Year. Arie Moffatt and Pat Wilson who sail out of RNSYS were named Male Youth Sailors of the Year. This marks the fourth consecutive year that sailors from RNSYS have been recognized with the Top Youth Sailor of the Year award. RNSYS sailors have also just finished an amazing regatta at the Miami World Cup and several teams are following Rafuse/Boyd in qualifying Canada for the Olympics! After a great personal best performance in world-class competition, Jacob & Graeme Saunders secured Canada an Olympic spot in the 470 Men class while Allie Surrette & Ali TenHove did the same in the 470 Women class. It was also all smiles at Miami World Cup for RNSYS Sonar GOLD medalists Paul Tingley, and his teammates. Canada has now qualified for spots in Rio 2016 in all classes with the exception of the 49er Men. Now it is up to the individual sailors to earn their ticket to the Rio. The next stage of Canadian Olympic qualification will include an evaluation of athlete performances by Sail Canada utilizing scores achieved at selected upcoming events. Here is an interesting read on Sail Canada s Olympic strategy. These results are simply outstanding. Let s cheer on our amazing athletes, as they continue their path to the Olympics. Your club is really proud of you! For the rest of us, we now anxiously await the Halifax International Boat Show where we can dream of the coming year on the water. It is also a good time to start planning for the upcoming sailing season. Our junior sailing program and sailing school schedule should be ready very soon. For those of you looking forward to the Squadron Summer Cruise, check out the Annual Cruising Dinner on Feb. 29th. If you are looking for some offshore sailing adventure this summer, registration for the 2016 Route Halifax St. Pierre is now up and running so get your plans put together and challenge yourself in the 8th biennial running of this historic 350 nautical mile yacht race. Lots to celebrate around the Club this month!

6 As the Youth Worlds has grown and travelled through the past 45 years, one constant has remained - the Championship's uncanny ability to give the sailing world a glimpse at its future stars. The 2015 ISAF Youth World Championships celebrated its 45th event of bringing the best young sailing talent across the world together in one place. Open to sailors aged 19 and under, the ISAF Youth Worlds has established an impressive legacy of giving the world a glimpse at its future stars. Four of our own Squadron sailors represented the RNSYS and Canada at the 2015 ISAF Youth Worlds over the holidays in Langkawi, Malaysia. Georgia Lewin- LaFrance and Terra Lanteigne competed in the 420 girls class, with Pat Wilson and Arie Moffat competing in the 420 boys class. This was the biggest Youth Worlds ever with more than 440 sailors from 80 countries, where each country is only allowed to send one representative per class. The sailing conditions were phenomenal, with tropical weather and races in shiftly winds that started very strong and ended soft by the last day. Our sailors has a great performance with this being their first international event. Georgia and Terra finished 13th, and Pat and Arie finished 15th. The rest of Team Canada consisted of sailors from Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto, participating in other classes. The team was coached by Head Race Coach of the RNSYS Agustin Ferrario, as well as a coach from Vancouver and another one from Toronto. After this great experience, our sailors will train hard to qualify again for the 2016 Youth Worlds, which will take place in Oman, in the Middle East. SAILING FOOTAGE HERE Click Play!

8 RNSYS RACING SCHEDULE IS READY FOR YOU Winter may be fresh on the ground, but at the RNSYS we re dreaming about the prized warm weather that awaits us and welcomes us to another great season on the water! Our roster of races is available for you to view, plan around and get excited about! Race Director Luke Porter has carved out some great races for you this year, and it all begins with our annual Skipper/Crew Night on April 20th! VIEW OUR 2016 RACE SCHEDULE
9 The basic schedule is familiar to everyone with our usual run of annual events. Wednesday night races will continue with the format from last year; three series starting at the beginning of May and wrapping up at the end of September with a break for Chester Race Week. Club races such as these will use our own club handicaps and any one design class that can find four competitors will have the option of being scored separately. Ocean Yacht Sales is once again sponsoring the Opening Regatta but this year we will have separate race officers to handle the one design classes and the handicap classes. Handicap fleets will have one day of windward/leeward racing and one day of distance racing while the one design fleets will focus entirely on windward/leewards. The Saturday series of distance races has been grouped together in the middle of the summer to make it easier to schedule. Like last year, the races will start and finish off the breakwater. These races are a great excuse to go sailing on the weekend and also make a gentle introduction to racing for those that might be interested. Sail Nova Scotia is going through a metamorphosis and part of the change is being much more pro-active and involved on the local level. They have taken control of Metro Race Week and are re-launching it as a central regatta and general boating event on the Natal Day weekend. Following the lead of the RNSYS from two years ago, the racing is to be held downtown with overnight docking on the waterfront and will feature one design and handicap racing with additional options also being discussed. The RNSYS race committee, being recognized for their ability and professionalism, will plan and run the races on behalf of Sail Nova Scotia. The basic outline of the event will be in place for the Halifax boat show. As always, we look to the sailors for feedback and ideas on what you would like to see from your Race Committee. Contact us through racedirector@rnsys.com
