After a week of tight competition and less-thanideal weather conditions, Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) and Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) won the Laser and Laser Radial fleets, respectively. The Lightning trio of David Starck (Buffalo, N.Y.), Bill Faude (Chicago, Ill.) and Jody Starck (Buffalo, N.Y.) earned a silver medal, only five points behind Chile. Three-time Olympic medalist Paul Foerster won a bronze medal in the Sunfish. Overall, the U.S. earned the second highest medal count behind Brazil, which pulled in three gold and two silver medals. Sailors endured delayed and cancelled races throughout the week, due to rain and a lack of breeze. Unfortunately the weather for Saturday s Medal Races was more of the same: drizzle and light air. But that didn t Continued on Page 4 Editor: Kevin Gil lighthouse@fusionproductionsinc.com
2 From The Helm Commodore Ed Johnson What s the biggest asset the club holds? The future of the Tampa Sailing Squadron lies in the hands of the youth of the Squadron. How might you help the youth of TSS? Simple. donate a few hours of time to Sea Explorer Ship 185 here at TSS or serve on the board of TSS Youth Sailing. You could even donate a boat. Take a few kids out for a club race or even a club cruise. Bring your children, grandchildren or your neighbor s children down for a Sunday Portsmouth race or sail. The club has some Sunfish for your enjoyment but please take care of these boats as if they were your own. If you damage a Sunfish please take responsibility and repair or replace the broken part. Most of all, enjoy! There s nothing like sailing a Sunfish in a stiff breeze. What other club offers boats for use at no cost, not many! What a great benefit to the members of TSS. We all must do our part to expose other folks to the wonders of sailing. If you have some co-workers, neighbors or friends that might enjoy being members in our club bring them down for a meeting or one of our many events. The clubs future will shine very bright as long as we share it. You re a member of a great club, share it with others. Enjoy your Club Ed Johnson, Commodore. 2
3 BOARD NOTES August 6, 2007 Willie Blevins will be reinstated as a member upon payment of his dues and late fee, per Bylaws Article IV, paragraph 5.0. Cash flow is ok and almost all of our members are up to date on fees, compliance forms, registrations, insurance and leases. Major expenditures were for the railway. Secretary: Pat Austin Thanks to Darla Vegenski for managing railway scheduling matters, at least until Paul Kasl returns in October and assumes the Railmaster duties. We welcome Jim Hoffman and Bill Fishbourne as probationary members and Michael Pilert as a prospective member. The Sunfish rigs are in poor shape. The Board has asked for recommendations regarding storage and use. The hoist will be taken out of operation any time the safety latch on the hoist hook is missing. DO NOT OPERATE THE HOIST WITHOUT THE SAFETY LATCH ON THE HOOK. We commend Mike Farley for organizing TSS s boating safety expo. If you weren t there, you really missed some valuable and interesting information. TSS got great media coverage and many guests expressed interest in joining the Club. Cruising and racing programs continue with growing numbers every month. Join the fun check the calendar on the website and read the Lighthouse for activities and schedules. The Board approved scheduling and facilities usage for several Youth Sailing classes for adults and kids. The Board approved in concept (details to follow) a new Youth Sailing club, for kids 7 to 13, which would meet twice monthly at TSS in the evening for a short talk, demonstration or activity, and from which it is hoped the kids would graduate to. Youth Sailing will have a car wash fundraiser at the August work party. Planning committee meeting Aug. 22 at 6:30. The Board investigated and was unsuccessful at establishing a line of credit. The Promissory Note program stands at $24,500. Many thanks to 36 members who have loaned funds to the Club. This program will continue, as we need to replenish our special reserves for disaster recovery before the big storm hits. The 5% interest rate is competitive, but the pride and pleasure you earn in sustaining the Club is priceless! Contact Don Fletchall to sign up, please. Pat Austin, Secretary 3
4 U.S. SAILORS BRING HOME FOUR MEDALS FROM PAN AM GAMES Continued From Front Cover quell the excellent competition. We did a lot of waiting for the weather to calm or pass, but the actual races were high quality, said David Starck. We were patient and waited for prime sailing conditions and the staff out at the venue could not have been better. In the final, double-point Medal Races, Campbell stumbled his first beat, but scrambled to catch up to Brazil s Robert Scheidt, a two-time Olympic champion and eight time world champion, who led the entire final race. Campbell rounded the last windward mark before the downwind finish in fourth place, but after a self-described risky split, he was able to get around the Argentinean and Chilean boats to finish overlapped with third and take second in the race behind Scheidt. He made it pretty tough on me, said Campbell, whose second place in the double-point Medal Race translated into a gold medal. Railey, US SAILING s 2006 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year and ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year, enjoyed single digit scores, including three bullets, throughout the week. Her impressive performance caused her to secure a gold medal ahead of Mexico s Tania Elias Calles Wolf, who shared 25 overall points. The Lightning crew of David Starck (Buffalo, N.Y.), Bill Faude (Chicago, Ill.) and Jody Starck (Buffalo, N.Y.) enjoyed a silver medal, only five overall points behind the gold medal winner, Chile. The medal race was really exciting, said David Starck. The Sunfish and Hobie 16 classes were unable to race Saturday, due to weather, so the final result of the first eight races, ending Friday, stuck. In the Sunfish, Foerster finished third behind Venezuela and Peru. Foerster s bronze medal is his second Pan Am Games medal: He won a gold medal in the J/24 class at the 1995 Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The Snipe duo of Augie Diaz (Miami, Fla.) and Tracy Smith (Newport, R.I.) barely missed a medal, landing in fourth place, only three points behind the third place team, Mexico. The J24 crew including Dan Borrer (St. Augustine Beach, Fla.), Nate Vilardebo (Tampa, Fla.), Patrick Wilson (Savannah, Ga.) and Josh Putnam (Augusta, Ga.) finished in fifth place, as did Nancy Rios (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) in the RS:X Women and Ben Barger (Tampa, Fla.) in the RS:X Men. The XV Pan American Games feature 5,654 athletes from 42 nations competing in 37 sports. The sailing competition is taking place at the Glória Marina in the Guanabara Bay. The Pan American Games are held every four years, historically one year before the Olympic Games. The first Pan American Games were held in 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 5 Dockmaster Dave Squier DOCKMASTER S REPORT I wish to thank Eric Nodland for stepping up and running the July Work party in my absence, Many things were accomplished, thank you Eric. As far as a report, the club house, inside and out, is in good shape. The docks and grounds are in good shape, and we should all be proud of our new haul-out facility. By the time you get this newsletter the haul out will be up and running. And all of this was accomplished because of you, the working club members. So the next time your at the club, take a minute and cherish what you have done. It s a pretty nice club... Be Proud Of It. I sometimes hear complaints coming from members about this or that, usually second hand, and usually its from the same small crowd that usually does little or nothing for the club but complain. If you have a complaint or an idea about something, bring it to the board. If you didn t know, the board meeting is the first Monday of every month at 7:30pm at the club house. The board is there for YOU. If I can help you, give me a call, my name is Dave Squier, I am the dockmaster. To Those Few: You don t have to draft letters and get signatures to take something in front of the Board. It s easy, just show up Any questions, call me. Dave Squier Dockmaster, TSS 5

Sailors bring appetizers, salads or whatever youwould like to share. We need a head count for the meat and dessert. Please sign up at the Club or call or Don t forget to send a check today to the TSS PROMISSORY NOTE DRIVE Goal $50K Now at $24K Mail To: PO BOX 3358 Riverview FL Note on check Promissory Note Drive Bilge Pumps It is important to frequently test your bilge pumps by switching from the automatic to manual position on the bilge pump switch. However, this doesn t guarantee that the pump will work when unattended. You should also check the automatic float switch by manually raising it to make sure that it turns on the pump. Also, check for debris or corrosion that might keep it from floating up properly. If this switch fails the pump won t turn on and your boat could take on sufficient water over time to do serious damage. Continued on page 22 12

14 Cruiser s Calling by Len Berkstresser On Saturday, July 21st Bill Cullen and Joyce Nodland conducted the Cruiser s Confidence Builders Class at TSS. We had 25 people in attendance which included representatives from the Gulf Hunter Sailing Association and Boca Ciega Yacht Club. Bill and Joyce covered topics such as Navigation, Provisioning, Anchoring, Engine Troubleshooting, Weather and Safety. There were a lot of questions and much discussion during the two hour presentation. The information was well presented. As always, Bill and Joyce did an excellent job. We all appreciate them sharing their cruising experiences. This year s program was filmed and should be available on our Web Site in the Ship s Store section shortly. Please check out the pictures on the web of this year s program. Our next cruise is a day sail trip to Pierce s Paradise, better known to most as Beer Can Island. The date is August 18th and the hosts are Don St. Amour and the. They are planning a day of fun and games on the island. Activities will include Sun Fish races, a blind dinghy race, egg tosses, three legged races and many more activities. The are a great group of kids and I am confident they will have a great day planned. Check the Cruiser s Bulletin Board for details and a sign-up sheet. The cruise planning meeting took place after the confidence builders program. We now have all of our cruises planned through next March. The list is extensive but you can check the web site for more details. The monthly calendar s are updated and posted on the Cruiser s Bulletin Board. I hope you can join in the fun on some of the upcoming trips. 14

18 Congratulations goes out to our New TSS Life Members Ladd and Sally Millican A well deserved honor for 2 individuals who have contributed much to TSS. Sally was the first female Commodore of TSS in She also served on the Board and as Cruising Fleet Captain for many years. Ladd replaced and repaired many wooden TSS flag poles. His expertise in boating and particular his love for the traditional wooden boat and woodworking in general is often called for around TSS. The Tampa Sailing Squadron thanks you for your many years of dedication and commitment to TSS and sailing in general. Labor Day Night Race September 3rd Started in 1936 by the Tampa Sailing Squadron as a Labor Day cruise to Sarasota, in 1948 it became the Tampa to Sarasota Labor Day Race. In the early 1950 s, DIYC, took over sponsorship of the race and it has been running annually since that time. The Friday evening of the Labor Day weekend, the night race begins just south of the club. Over the years, the finishing destination of the race has recently been Pass-A-Grille YC or Treasure Island YC. The race offers great views of the yellow lit Skyway Bridge and south Pinellas county shoreline at the finish very early on Saturday morning. ATTENTION WOMEN RACERS: A women s racing series for PHRF sailors is resuming this year between the DAVIS ISLAND YACHT CLUB AND TAMPA SAILING SQUADRON. The divisions will include spinnaker, non spinnaker and coach on board. The first race of the series will begin Sunday September 16 with the DIYC Dore Drake Regatta. The notice of series will be posted on the DIYC website and the TSS website shortly. If you are interested in some racing practice prior to the series, meet at DIYC on August 18th at 9:00 am for a couple of hours of on-board practice. If any questions, you can contact me at tampa bay.rr.com or call me at Hope to see you all out there! 18
19 Building your cruising confidence. At the TSS Cruisers Confidence Building seminar last month we, as a group, talked about a lot of the different aspects of enjoyable and safe coastal cruising. For those that were there, here are a couple of reminders that you ll recognize. Navigation; remember those yellow symbols on intercoastal waterway markers. Return to Brownsville, Texas for RRR. Keep reds to the land side in the intercoastal. Remember to use those range markers, line them up one over the other. Measure distance on the sides of your charts, not the bottom or top. Stay to the windward side of the channel, and look back to make sure you re not getting set. Check out: Flseagrant.ifas.usl.edu/anchorage on the web. Weather; remember what to do before a big rainstorm, remember you re about to lose visibility. Recall what a winter time fronts do, they clock around. Check out intellicast.com, sailflow.com, wunderground.com, and the others that we identified. Anchoring and docking; have chain as long as your boat, use hand signals, don t yell. Set the anchor gently, let the boat set it before you back on it. Spring lines, recall a2 + b2 = c2 to determine line snugness. The longer the line the less slack needed. Comfort and Food; recall what we said about fans, screens, and shades. I hope you enjoy your joy baths too. Frozen food keeps the beer cold, remember the lingerie bag idea, and make sure those pans fit the stove. Use the old lifelines as a lock up cable for the dink. I hope this jogs your memories of just a few of the things we all talked about. Thank you all for participating and sharing your knowledge. A special thanks to Joyce Nodland for adding her informative comments backed by years of over the horizon sailing. I ll see you all out there. 22 Like the price you are paying for your slip? Enjoy Sitting on the screened-in porch? The hoist sure comes in handy...and the Railway. The Club is very nice! One thing...tss is a WORK EQUITY CLUB! Please do your part. Ask a Board Member what you can do to help out! Bilge Pump Tips Don t rely on your automatic pump switch, with its tiny red panel light, to be your bilge alarm. Install a real bilge alarm with a loud horn. Mount the float switch a little higher up than the bilge pump so that it won t sound as long as minimal water is entering and the pump is keeping up with it. Only use submersible pumps that have tinned wire electrical leads (to resist corrosion), and install them so that the wire connections are well above bilgewater level and sealed from water intrusion. Use smooth wall discharge hose wherever possible, and keep run lengths and bends to a minimum. If the discharge outlet is close to the waterline, be sure to include a riser loop about 18 inches above waterline before the outlet to prevent back siphoning. Install at least one pump, with switch, in each bilge compartment that does not drain into others. Install redundant pump systems in the main engine compartment and lazarette bilges. Place the backup pump and switch slightly higher than the primary so that the backup can take over if debris clogs the main pump. Use a strum box (intake grate) or screen on the suction hose, and mount the intake on a small pedestal so that debris can settle out below it. Install submersibles where they can be reached and cleaned of debris easily.
