1 View From the Bridge by Mary Matakovich, Commodore Ahoy Mates! We celebrated our Independence Day in the traditions of the club; we celebrate our holidays together. A number of our members, Sandy and Val Gillespie, Gillian and Ron Sinclair and Tom and Dorie Zwinger joined Pete and me early at the Avila Beach Civic Association s Pancake Breakfast. Then, members watched the Doggie Parade on the promenade with over 80 dogs and owners participating. The club s social started around 11AM with Cheeseburgers in Paradise hosted by Colleen and Dave Lipanovich, and their assistants, Cherrie and Bob Arthur. Highlight of the event was an up-andcoming sailor, (pictured below) Lawson Gillespie, the son of Sandy and Staff Dave Lipanovich at the grill. Commodore Val s niece, who enjoyed the festive atmosphere of the club, his first 4th of July. The Boat Parade kicked-off with nine decorated boats with club members and community members enjoying the motoring around the bay with our trusty canon, thanks to Bob Cazier, blazing the way in the Chase Boat guided by Director Jim Gilletly. A wonderful sight to topoff the afternoon! WOW! Did we have a fun July or what! Notice even SLO Sloop is Looking Good on Wet Wednesday, thanks to Captains: Ron Pigeon, Barry Stewart and David Williams. We just watched them from the club as they sailed by, amazingly sleek and very fast. You have got to come out and SLO Sloop looking good! enjoy some fun on the water on Wet Wednesday. We are hosted monthly by Director Jeff Bucher. Margie Hurd served a very up-scale, Dalmatian salad meal, elegant! Mike Davis and Darrel Rundstrom shared their club members adventures in the San Francisco Bay. I want to thank all of you who joined us at 8 AM on July 5 for the Beach Clean-up morning. We met at the base of the Avila Pier, donned our clean-up apparel and for the next few hours basically did a sweep of the beach. Thanks to the regular announcements of the Life Guards on the 4th reminding people to carry-out their trash, we had a successful, manageable morning. Mark your calendars for the day after Labor Day, September 5, at 8 am, come and join in the fun. 2 The Board of Directors approved a club-sponsored table at two community-sponsored events: September 9 The Central Coast Aquarium Catch Dinner on the Port Harford Pier Table for 8 and September 23 The Avila Beach Civic Association s Avila Apple Festival Gala Dinner Table for 8. We will be holding a raffle for each of these events. Tickets will be on-sale at the club; buy your chance to win a Dinner-for-2 at each event. Details will be provided at the club. Drawings will be held a week before the event. Winners need not be present. It is a great to know that we are supporting these community activities. The Board will be discussing possible Constitution and Bylaw changes at its upcoming meeting. Secretary Melanie Cleveland is heading up a committee to review our Constitution and Bylaws, please contact her if you have any suggested changes. Friends of Avila Pier is a non-profit group to support the rehabilitation of the pier. If you have an interest in participating on this Board or just want to be involved, read the banner hanging at the gate on the Avila Pier, go to the port s website, call the port s office or talk to Jim Blecha or myself for more information. Our Board of Directors has given permission for this non-profit to meet at our clubhouse. We have several yacht club members who have expressed an interest in this Board. We will provide more information as this group evolves. There is a need for a wide range of support. Join us if you can. Historian Brian King and I along with Pete Kelley represented the club at our 18 years Member, C. Baring Farmer s Mass and Reception. We are proud to have known Baring as a regular, unpretentious, active member of the club. His sons, Members: Matt and Bing, will certainly carry-on their family s traditions at the clubhouse. Hope you are enjoying your summer, especially by coming to the clubhouse to enjoy our beautiful beach. We have a number of August activities: boat races, Wet Wednesday, socials, brunch, dinner, Zongo Cup and a potluck; all needing volunteers to help. Come and join in the fun. My best to you, always, Mary Rear Commodore Report by Barry Stewart, Rear Commodore Ahoy SLYC Members. The second bathroom re-model is almost complete, the tile is finally installed, there was a backorder for the matching material but it went in last month. I hope to announce reopening via scuttlebutt soon, we may need to solicit a few volunteers to help put finishing touches on the project. Marty Fuller and Dennis Dempsey have been working around our activities so as not to impair your use of the club, thank them when you see them. The annual Morro Bay to Avila Race, in recent years combined into the Zongo Cup cruise and music event, is tentatively scheduled Saturday August 12. We are investigating how SLYC may be involved with the sailing portion, but you will have to watch the scuttlebutts for details. We may host the Morro Bay Yacht Club pirates if we can get them ashore and into our club that evening. We will have the Avila Cup races on 8/6 with myself and Mike Davis aboard Chase. We have three more sailor enrollees who have completed SLO Sloop familiarization. These members are Ron Pigeon, David William and Mike Davis. Maybe you can get them to take you sailing. Thank you for supporting our local club sailing program. Contact myself or our boatmaster Dan Pease if you are interested in and or curious about becoming a SLO Sloop Sailor. Depending on your sailing and boating experience, we can help you either train, refresh, familiarize or just have you crew with someone else in order to become a SLO Sloop sailor. We hope to grow the program to the point where we can justify upgrading a notch in comfort, ballast and accommodations for more members at once and have more involvement in racing, training, and just plain recreational sailing. 3 Fleet News by Kristin Rasmussen, Sail Fleet Captain Thank you to all competitors and volunteers for the July 2nd races. We had both monohulls and multihulls competing. In the first race, Doug Anthony s strategy aboard Sea Symphony paid off as he brought her across the finish line first. Congratulations to Doug and Sharon on a wonderful day of racing. We had three multi hull boats competing in July. Tom Sinnickson, Scott Erwin and Chris Barrett brought out their Hobie 18s. Tom Sinnickson and Scott Erwin traded wins in the individual races with Scott just edging ahead of Tom to win the day, and take a lead in the PSL Small Boat series. Thank you to our Race Committee volunteers: Dan and Georgina Pease, Lindalee Fromm, Jeff Bucher and Leanne Drummond. We have only four days of ocean racing left, so be sure to go to the Time to Sign Up page of the website and volunteer as a race committee member. You don t want to miss out on this fun and easy way to get your volunteerism done. Please contact me if you have any questions. Happy Boating, Kristin Power Report by Jim Gilletly, Power Captain Hello fellow SLYC members. The Power Report is back for August Boating Season is in Full Swing! This year, so far, we ve had the Hobie Days Races on April 29 and 30, Avila Cup Races on May 21, June 4, and July 2, and a spectacular 4th of July Boat Parade with the participating boats decked out in their finest patriotic regalia, including a cannon on board the Chase Boat. Wow! I would like to truly thank Rod Valine, Tommy Whitney, and Dave Lipanovich for their assistance with the Hobie Days Races, also Rod Valine, Melanie Topp Cleveland, Bill Dyer, and Wiley Poole for their assistance with the Avila Cup Races. Also, I would like to give a shout out to Bob Cazier for manning the cannon during our 4th of July Boat Parade. 4 Cruising News by Lettie Fuller, Cruising Captain Ahoy members. We started the sailing season with a bang! On June 24th, we had three sail boats and one catamaran sail in beautiful Santa Barbara with knots of wind. The boats that sailed were Amigos, Gran Cru, Wind Star, and Glen Garrison s Erikson 27. We had a great time sailing in the afternoon (photos below) with the wind in our faces and the sun at our backs. After sailing we met on Amigos for a dock side party and over 40 members attended the BBQ of hamburgers and hot dogs, salads and desserts. Join us again on August 26th for another sail in Santa Barbara and dock side party. We celebrated the 4th of July with a boat parade in Avila Bay. We had 9 boats decorated in red, white and blue sail between the piers. It was a colourful and patriotic afternoon. The following participated in the boat parade. Harbor Patrol Fire Boat lead the parade with the water gushing from the fire hose, SLO Sloop with Bill Dyer at the helm, and crew, Chase boat with Jim Gilletly at the helm, and the canon fired by Bob Cazier, and crew, Stella Maris with Barry Stewart at the helm, and crew, Sea Symphony with Doug Anthony at the helm and crew, Spirit with Mark Kocina at the helm and crew, Waverunner Jeff Stewart, PG&E boat and crew, Catamaran and crew. Everyone had a grand time on the water and on shore. The pictures tell the story. See you on the water, Lettie 4

6 New Burgee A new burgee was brought back by Lettie Fuller from a SLYC sailing adventure in Mexico thanks guys, keep up the good work! Puerta Vallarta Yacht Club, Mexico Jeff Liberman Burgees A bit of Lore, Legend, Blarney and Song of the Sea Cats, sometimes considered unlucky on land, are normally deemed lucky aboard ships. If a cat licks fur against the grain, there will soon be a hailstorm. Cats born with extra toes are the best shipboard cats. The anchor on a ship is secured to the Cathead. Punished sailors were flogged by the Bosun or his mates with a cat kept in a red bag. Sailors never want to let the cat out of the bag. St. Nicholas is the patron of mariners. Lightning is rightfully feared, St Elmos fire (another form of static electricity) is considered lucky. Red sky at night sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailor takes warning. Losing a hat overboard lengthens a voyage. 6
