COMMODORE S COMMENTS Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves, We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves! Humbert Wolfe As a sailor, I often think of the Fall season not as the end of summer or the even the end of year, but as the beginning.; the beginning of our sailing season. It is also an important time for our Club as our Membership elects next year s leadership of HIYC. October starts off with the Quarterly Meeting and chili cook-off. You won t want to miss the excitement of choosing both next years Board of Governors and the best chili HIYC members have to offer. Excellent leadership and stewardship are the foundation of our Club and crucial to our continued success and of course, you can t beat a great bowl of chili! Be sure to mark your calendars and attend or send your proxy to HIYC Secretary Randall Butler. We continue the month with two McDougall Regattas held on the second and fourth weekend in October and wrap up the month with Fall Clean-up Day. Pre-registration for the McDougall Regatta, as well as crew sign up, is available on the website. Be sure to check it out and enjoy the competition and camaraderie of your sailing friends. Fall clean-up day will be Saturday the 31st...yes, that s Halloween. Although the name suggests only work, it s also a great time to enjoy the company of your HIYC friends and contribute to the beauty of our Club. Stay tuned to the Anchorline and website for upcoming events and Quarterly Meeting notice. See you at the Club! 4 *** REGATTA TIME IN SAN FRANCISCO *** HIYC represented at V15 NATIONALS San Francisco is windy! That may be stating the obvious, but for a girl that has only ever sailed in Nashville... experiencing it was a whole different ball game. But what a great trip! Last year Nashville hosted the V15 National Regatta at Percy Priest. We had 30+ boats and fantastic racing. One of the boats had come all the way from San Fran. So when 2015 Nationals came around (at this person s home club) we had extra motivation to head to the west coast. 3 boats from Nashville represented our fleet. Lem Stevens with Mike Osborne, Anthony Passafiume with Joey Groszek, Molly Leitch with Laura Johnson, and our support extraordinaire Elizabeth Eckert. I could not have imagined a better group of people. From helping each other launch boats, swapping gear, consulting on rig settings, on and on; the team atmosphere made me so appreciative of the fantastic sailing culture in Nashville. Most of us arrived Wednesday night. Thursday we all made our way to the regatta venue, Treasure Island Sailing Club (TISC). It is an amazing island directly under the picturesque Bay Bridge. The club sits on Clipper Cove which was designed as a plane landing area in WW2. The cove is protected allowing for wind but relatively little chop. All the boats were rigged and ready Thursday night to participate in the TISC V15 Weekly Fleet Race. And for that one night we looked like rock stars! The wind was shifted from the normal westerly direction making it light and shifty that s Nashville sailing if I ever heard it. However, our glory was short lived. We returned for the official Friday practice to a steady 20+ knots of wind. Wow! Saturday and Sunday were race days. The sea breeze was right on time Saturday and we started races around noon. 33 boats on the line. 8 races. Target time per race was 30 minutes, so we started with a 2 lap course then went to 3 laps as the wind built to its peak 25 knots. It was an honor just to be there. For those of you who don t know me, I started sailing 4 years ago and have only learned to skipper within the last 2 years. My goal for the regatta was to survive. This obviously was accomplished (thanks to my amazing crew Laura!). But to be on the start line with people who have sailed together as a team in San Francisco for over 15 years it was incredible. The technique, the expertise, and the coordination on each of the lead boats was inspiring. And we needed the inspiration. I think all 3 Nashville boats left the water that day tired, salty, and ready for
some post-race beer. Highlights of the day included a screaming reach on the last 3 races. We were going fast! One boat near ours thought there was something wrong because we were laughing so loud. The second highlight was seeing a seal. That s right a live seal right in the middle of the course. In hindsight I shouldn t have been surprised because I have seen dolphins by our boat in Florida but it was so cool! Back to sailing. Sunday we all returned ready to take on Clipper Cove again. And overall I think we all had a better day. Wind was a little bit lighter (by San Fran standards anyway) and all of us tightened our rigs down a bit more than Saturday. We all finished every race, no capsizes, and all generally felt more in control. Highlight for Sunday was Mike s award. Mike Osborne earned the VERY well deserved regatta trophy for Farthest Drive. He and his sedan took 2 boats all the way from Nashville to San Fran. What a champion. Overall, I am so glad that Laura convinced me to go to this regatta. Never having sailed outside of Nashville it was outside my comfort zone, but knowing that the group was there and would help us with everything was a huge comfort. I am so grateful for the amazing people on the trip and the entire experience. Ready for Nashville s Fall Regatta Season! -From the Logbook of Molly Leitch Sea Scout News During the summer of 2014 we never seemed to have any wind during our attempted Thursday evening sails. The summer of 2015 has been much better. Our two Oday 17's were used almost every week. In July, our blue Oday received a brand new mainsail. What a grand treat to see the kids out with this. A few weeks later we received a wonderful lightning which will be used as our youth gain in their experience and are ready to use this advance boat. Additionally, Sarah Taylor held her 40 hour cruise on Old Hickory lake using the Scout's San Juan 23 and Gina Beckman held her 40 hour cruise using canoes on Reelfoot lake. This is one of the requirements of the Quarter Master award, the highest rank in Sea Scouting. As I write this our youth are preparing our San Juan 23 and North American 23 for a trip up river to Boxwell Boy Scout Camp where they will be speaking about their own sailing experiences and skills as well as teaching the almost lost art of semaphore to around 500 scouts the last weekend of September. I'll close by tooting our own horn. Gina Beckman is days away from finishing all the requirements for Quarter Master. Upon accomplishing this goal, she will be the first female in Tennessee to achieve this award and the only 4th youth in Tennessee ever to reach such a rank! All these fine, outstanding youths have been involved with Harbor Island's Sea Scout program! -Andy Griswold
Welcome Aboard! Benjamin Glover is thrilled to be joining HIYC! Benjamin was born in Tennessee but raised from the age of 2 in North Carolina. Most of his time in NC he lived in Durham and yes, he bleeds DUKE BLUE. Benjamin moved back to TN after 7 years in Asheville, NC where most of the time he worked in advertising/ marketing for the local newspaper. Benjamin moved to Nashville, TN in 2011 to attend the Belmont University College of Law, of which he is a member of the charter class of Benjamin is an Assistant General Counsel at the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. He has spent the last 4 years crewing on the Blue Heron and one summer sailing with the Vanguard 15 fleet. This summer he bought and is repairing a 1973 Helms Y-Flyer. Besides sailing he loves kayaking, hiking, cooking, live music and music festivals. Benjamin lives in East Nashville with his dog Monty. My name is Bill England and I'm proud to be a new HIYC member! I grew up around the north part of Ky Lake close to Grand Rivers and spent most of my childhood and teenage years in the wilderness and shorelines of Land between the Lakes. With strong encouragement and help from my mom, I stayed heavily involved in the Boy Scouts and am an honorary Order of the Arrow member and Eagle Scout. The first time I fell in love with sailing was when we took a 5-day high adventure sailing trip on Ky Lake while crewing part-time on a Hunter 35.5, skippered by the late and greatly missed Gene Boaz. After too many years without sailing, my passion for it was brought full circle when I was asked by Rick Fielder to crew the Overlord for the O.L. Shultz regatta. Then I was hooked!! After that first race I then dove headfirst into learning how to sail and found treasures of knowledge from the skippers at the club. I was graciously invited by Marcelo Perez to join he and his family on a 47' catamaran charter in the Caribbean where I passed my ASA 103 certification. I can't thank you enough Marcelo!!! Trip of a lifetime. I feel truly blessed to be a member of HIYC. I know my passion for sailing is shared with many other members and I am looking forward to meeting everyone and to help out the club in any way I can. See you on the water!! Hi, we re Helene Armitage and Mark Tempelmeyer, and we re thrilled to be new members of HIYC! In this photo we re happily sailing aboard Ma Jolie, our Jeanneau 409 that we sail out of Punta Gorda Florida. We ve been active participants at HIYC for years. Mark grew up sailing in Middle Tennessee, and first raced a Sunfish at HIYC when he was 7, which was 49 years ago. Over the past 20 years or so, we ve been the regular regatta crew for Mark s dad, Ken. When we re aboard his boat, there s over a hundred years of racing experience! We will continue to plan our travel to Nashville around events at HIYC, and will hopefully continue to crew with dad for many more years. We ve made terrific friends around HIYC who we hope will be lifetime friends, and that s our primary reason for becoming official members of the club.
More Welcome Aboard! Jay Lanier and his wife Leslie Butler moved from Rockville, Maryland to Old Hickory in Prior to moving to Tennessee Jay lived in the Washington, DC area. Leslie is from Huntsville, Alabama and moved to the DC area after college. Jay is a Software Developer (retired) and Leslie is a co-founder (retired) of a computer network and programming company. Jay graduated from St. Mary s College of Maryland (BS Biology) and initially worked at an environmental research laboratory in Manassas, Virginia as a Field Technician and later as a Field Supervisor. Jay went back to school and reinvented himself as a programmer. Jay wrote many software programs for the Federal Government and private sector. Notable software included a software simulator to test and show proof of concept for the next generation of en Route Air Traffic Control, a prototype touch-screen information system for use in the cockpit, and the first Missing and Exploited Children's System. Jay and Leslie s plan was to retire, move closer to family, live on a lake, and experience less road traffic and snow. They found the perfect place and built a modern house with a dock for their power boat and Vagabond 20 Plus sailboat in the Brandywine Farms neighborhood in Old Hickory. Jay learned to sail Lasers and 420 dinghies at Saint Mary s College, worked as a waterfront director at a children s camp for two years, and has sailed off and on over the years including races at Percy Priest Lake. Jay is a sculptor, an avid gardener and a member of the Perennial Plant Society of Middle Tennessee. Jay and Leslie enjoy Titans football games (season ticket holders), hiking, and entertaining friends and family. *** HIYC ANNUAL FALL SAIL 4 SIGHT *** For the past fifteen years in September, a small group of HIYC members volunteer to take a group of fine folks with various physical & visual disabilities for a day of sailing. Organized through former Commodore Joe Ballard and his work associates, this event has been greeted as a regular fall sail with much anticipation. So it was on Saturday the 19 th, under the direction of Rear Commodore David Brandon and three other skippers (members Mike Eller, Patti Grissom, and Jim Waller), the group took 16 visual and hearing impaired friends on a two hour sail on Old Hickory Lake. In addition, a host of volunteers headed by JD Powell prepared lunch and a great time was had by all. These are a few of the photos that were taken of the annual event:

HISTORY This colorful regatta series was initiated by HIYC in 1968 to honor the club's "Adopted Scotsman," Thistle skipper John McDougall: a Harbor Islander who was instrumental in organizing and promoting sailing in Nashville. It was he who purchased the land on what would become Harbor Island. John constructed a concrete causeway from the mainland for the purposes of developing a residential community prior to the lake being filled. No doubt, he also dreamed of a permanent location for he and his sailing friends. We at HIYC owe a great debt to this man; because without John and that fortuitous notion, HIYC would not be in existence. 3 CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event Heavy handicap class A: displacement 5000/Lbs and greater, PHRF ratings of 145 or less, Spinnaker assumed Heavy handicap class B: displacement 5000/Lbs and greater, PHRF ratings 146 and greater.
