5 Sea Scout News The new year has started out going gang busters. When it s cold and dark out our numbers normally fall a bit. Only having 3-4 youth attend the weekly meetings is not unusual for January. But so far this year we ve been averaging youth at our weekly meets. But the one thing we re not happy about is that once again we re the only Sea Scout Ship in Middle Tennessee. Three years ago there were five. And I am only aware of a couple of others in the state that are currently active. Although we do have an advantage with the wonderful facility we enjoy at HIYC and fantastic support from the club. Many other Sea Scout Ships really struggle in these areas. And on average a Sea Scout Ship will only last three or four years. In our case we re now at twenty five years. In mid January we were to be attending the annual Venturing/Sea Scouting Klondike derby which is held at the Latimer High Adventure camp in East Tennessee. No this is not actually Sea Scouting but our presence helps to get the word out about this organization. And it has helped in the past for us to pick up new members and assisted other Sea Scout Ships in the area to get started. But a snow storm prevented the event from happening. What??? This is a Klondike derby. It should be held in the snow. And I agree. But the road to Latimer is dangerous any time there is ice or snow. Thus we will be trying again in mid February. Last year we had two six youth teams to take part. Hopefully we will have as many again this year. Each year several thousand Boy Scouts across the United Stated will earn the highest rank of Eagle. But less than 100 Sea Scout youth will earn the highest rank of Quarter Master. I am proud to announce that one of our Sea Scouts, Alex Day has finished all the requirements for Quarter Master. This was accomplished in mid December of last year. There is still some paperwork to be finished and a ceremony to plan. But we are excited and proud of this accomplishment. Hopefully we ll be able to hold the ceremony at HIYC later this spring. Speaking of accomplishments we re proud of Sea Scout Garrett Ostrander for his being presented with the Junior Sailor Award for Like I said we re going like gang busters. Something tells me it s going to be a good year for our Sea Scouts. Andy Griswold

6 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Upon being given the helm from 2017 Commodore Randall Butler at our Change of Watch ceremonies on January 7, I shared with those present these words; "I thank the membership as well as the nomination from our past commodores for this honor. I never dreamed many years ago when I first came to HIYC to participate in Lots-A-Lasers at the invitation of my longtime friend Bruce Richards, that I would be standing here, at the helm, as your commodore. You have given me the privilege of serving year long terms as Jr Governor, Governor, and Sr. Governor. After a few years rest, I have been honored to serve most recently, year terms as Secretary, Vice Commodore, and now begin as the 58th Commodore of Harbor Island Yacht Club. WOW. I will not be in any way perfect. I do promise strive to be Kind, Fair and Firm, to hold this office informed by our half- century of history, and governed by the 10 Articles of our Constitution. I will strive to filter all matters as informed by Article III of our Constitution (which hangs in our board room) Article III begins...the purpose of the club is to promote sailing in all of its branches... That is our purpose... to promote our love of SAILING I love sailing. One of the best things about HIYC is that ever where we turn, we are surrounded by men and women, boys and girls who also love the magic of sailing. You may notice from my 2018 Commodore photo above, that I choose to have my portrait taken in our club board room, surrounded by the photos of the 57 past commodores. When I look around this room, I pause to give thanks for all the leadership and commitment of those who have come before us. HIYC would not exist without their vision, commitment, hours of volunteer service, and financial investment. But that number is only a fraction of the many members before, and who are here now so vital in allowing us to stand at this present place in history. There is an ancient writing I pass along we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses That is what I have been thinking about in my new role as your Commodore. I am surrounded by a host of sailors, past and present, who all loved and love to sail and to provide opportunities for others to love and enjoy sailing. Let s love sailing Friendship and Support, Gene
