3 Commodore s Comments By the time you read this, the Winter Series will be over and our busy spring season will begin. Thanks to all the sailors who participated in the Winter Series; the change of sailing format to pursuit races was a success (after we learned the course and worked out a few bugs). Everyone I spoke to said they really enjoyed pursuit racing and most of the time the boats finished really close together giving us all more time at the dock to visit and compare sailing notes! If you didn t make it out this year, you should definitely plan on sailing next year as we usually experience more wind and less boaters. The Warterfield March Winds Regatta will be held on the 7th. I hope everyone can make it to the first regatta of the year; more boats=more fun! Our Sea Scouts have their annual bilge sale planned for the weekend of the 14th. Come support our Sea Scouts, give and get some sailing gear. You never know what sailing treasure you may find. Spring clean-up will be held on the 21st. Please mark your calendar for a half day of working together to make our club sparkle for the oncoming summer schedule. Lunch and comradery will be provided. Last, but not least, on the monthly calendar is the Cully Cobb 50K Regatta and the Quarterly Meeting. Please remember to send your proxy to Secretary Randall Butler, if you are unable to attend the Quarterly Meeting, as we will be voting on our yearly budget. Also, please keep in mind all the upcoming activities surrounding the O.L. Schultz Hospice Regatta and the not to be missed, Splash Party. In closing, kudos to Molly and Katie for putting together a fabulous Wine Tasting Party. Everyone had a wonderful time of dancing, food and of course, a variety of wines to sample. The décor and delicious food was over the top! I also want to thank Ray Marley and Molly s friend Carolyn for cleaning up! See you at the Club! Mike Osborne Hiyccommodore@icloud.com NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS The new HIYC Dock and Mooring Policy is now for member view on the club website:

8 Webmaster Report The new HIYC website has been a long work in progress. I started building the site in September The site was finally launched shortly after New Year s Between those dates, I put in countless hours to create the site as it exists today. It is designed to be informative and easy to navigate. If you haven t visited the new site, I strongly encourage you to do so. The address is the same: hiyc.org. It was and is my mission to create a site that is current and vital to the life of HIYC. I ll need the help of YOU the membership to keep it that way! If you have photos or an announcement that you d like to have posted on the site, or HIYC s Facebook page, please let me know. I can be reached at HIYCWebmaster@gmail.com. Over the coming months, we ll take a look at how you can use the new website. This month, the club s history gets the spotlight. If you re new(er) to HIYC, you can learn more about the club s history at hiyc.org/ about-us/history. If you re an old-timer, please check my work! I ve been at HIYC for all of my 32 years; but I don t know it all! From humble beginnings prior to HIYC s founding, right through today, I ve included archive photos, along with a revised text to make the club s history pop right off the page er screen. I hope you ll take a few minutes to read through this section of the site. It s always better to have a good understanding of where we ve been and who got us to where we are today. In this way, we can better direct the future of HIYC. Sea Scout News February has been a month of service and event planning. Youth and adults have spent several weekends in service and learning while building handrails outside the Griswold home. Holes were dug, cement poured; wood was measured, cut and assembled. Youth experienced table and compound saws, a router and a planer; all without an injury! Youth are headed to Reelfoot Lake on the 27th for the weekend for Eagle watching. March 4th, with Nashville Sailing Association, will be a combined Bilge sale at West Marine. April 11th will be the Annual Scout Rendezvous, not at Camp Boxwell as in the years past, but at the Smyrna National Guard Base. The first weekend in May will be the Pfeffer Regatta, which will be at Camp Boxwell. June has a trip to Mobile and Pensacola being planned. Each of these activities are youth generated and planned and organized. What a fun, motivated group! Brian Laidlaw Sail Camp 2015 It s that time of year again getting ready for Sail Camp! As in the past, Harbor Island Yacht Club will four one week sessions. The dates are the four full weeks of June; Session One starting Monday the 1 st, the Second Session on Monday the 8 th, the Third on the 15 th and the last week of Camp from the 22 nd though the 26 th. Campers aged 7 to 15 will be assigned to Opti or Laser fleets and this year we will have at least one main and jib boat for two sailors. Camp starts each day at 1300 hours and wraps up promptly at 1800 hours. The weekly fee is still a bargain only $255, just $5 more than last year. We continue to make this affordable because of the financial support of the Club, as well as generous donors from the Nashville Sailing Foundation Board as well as other supporters. Plus this year, the Sail Camp is working with the Sea Scouts to sponsor our Bilge Sale a nautical garage sale at West Marine on Saturday, March14; proceeds going to the Scouts and to support the Camp. All registrations including payments are done on line at applet_registration_form.php?regatta_id=9728. Additional info is available on the Nashville Sailing Website (Nashville Sailing Foundation.org) or by contacting Marc Fortune at or Marc@MarcFortune.com.

9 IN MEMORIAM I got my start at Harbor Island in the late 80s (that s the 1980s), through a member invite whom I had recently met. That member was Bob Hobson. He began teaching me how to sail on his O Day 19, which was slipped next to this green boat named METROMASTER on the old Plastic Dock. Bob was an older gentleman. Kind as he was; he wasn t much to keeping up with a newly divorced, 36 year young, whipper snapper. On the flip side, the guy that owned this green boat sure enjoyed my stupidity, or rather naiveté; and that guy was P.R. Easterling. He thought I was a character; but, really, it was the other way around. It became clear early on, that this club collected all types, thankfully; and P.R. made sure that I was very welcomed. There used to be this old, out-of-tune, upright piano in one corner of the clubhouse. Some of the keys were even broken. Nobody played it or wanted to, accept P. R. Easterling. As if it were yesterday, I can hear him holler over to me as we walked through the clubhouse, Hey, Randall, listen to this! Damn, if that piano didn t come alive with some hopping ragtime tune, or a tune of his own! Who was this guy? Around P. R., there was no such thing as boredom. As some of you know; IROS, once owned by Ross Bryan, was bought by John Finch. John had it repowered with a diesel up at Roddering Marine on Lake Barkley. I had been given rights to the old Atomic 4 engine, but I had no way of picking it up. P. R. volunteered with his old white truck, so we took off on a little road trip. On the way, we both had libations in sippy cups to nourish our thirsts. Not advisable or recommended, it is what it is. So we re on our way, just shootn the breeze. P.R. starts fumbling around while he s driving; he begins to relieve himself into his sippy cup! (Now, before anybody gets up in arms, my Mom used to provide her 3 boys with what we called Travel Cups, used on long road trips to Florida back in the day.) Laughing so hard at what I was witnessing, I asked P.R., What are you going to do now, big boy? His reply, I m gonna pour it out! I could see it blowing everywhere all over the both of us when he rolled that window down. No way. I demanded we exit on the next off ramp before removing the sippy cup s contents, which we did. He smoked, he drank, he cursed, he enjoyed the company of beautiful women, he loved sailing, he loved his boat, he enjoyed his friends, and he loved his three kids! Pretty much everything I do & like. Yes, P. R. was a flawed man, much like most of us; we just hide it better. He was a man s man. There was no fault hidden that couldn t bare the light of day; or for that matter, at least being laughed about. What you saw is what you got! He lived life on his own terms and never made excuses. For me, that s what made P. R. so damn attractive and a life-long friend! I ll miss him, already do. Randall Butler Red Boats and the Blues I became friends with Bob Cotton when he invited me to crew for him on his lightning, 13957, a deep red Nickels boat built by Dave himself. We traveled to Memphis in 1987 for their spring regatta, the Hernando Desoto accompanied by a Vandy grad student. My only lightning experience prior to was with my J-24 friends sailing the famous Rat boat in the Bluenose so my experience was pretty limited. I rarely turned down crew opportunities in those days and off we went. I think we sailed passably on Saturday and after finding no available party we headed to Memphis in May where I tried to keep up in our search for the blues. On Sunday I had the blues, frequently fed fish and was as miserable as one can be, hungover in a hot boat on a little Mississippi lake on a Sunday morning. Finishing the racing, we went in and I, informed that my father had died during the night, came down with the serious blues. During the ride back Cotton kindly got me talking about him and by the time we got back I was feeling much better. I sailed with Bob a few times after that and eventually got my own red lightning and sailed against him. He was a tireless competitor as well as having a wonderfully patrician manner that always seemed to dress everything up while keeping the rest of us firmly in place. I think it was a real problem for him when I finally became more competitive but ever the sportsman, he dealt with it. When I failed to call Bruce Campbell after the first year he sailed with me (I thought he wasn t interested) Bob snapped him up and they sailed together from then on, nearly thirty years. Bob Cotton represented a certain intelligent elitism that seemed to be centered in lightning fleet 262 at HIYC and other lightning fleets in the country. There were a number of academics and professionals in the fleet and that group was as attractive to me as the sailboats they raced. My grandfather had raced lightnings back in the day, crewing for Ross Bryan. Cully Cobb was a champion lightning sailor, also Crit Currie and Fred and Anne Beesley. I have always felt lucky to have known them all. Cotton s passing is like the decline of the fleet: you know you will never have it that good again and you wish you had sailed harder and lived more fully at the time, like Bob did. Bill Killebrew (white boat, no blues)

10 WINTER RACING RESULTS 2015 LASER FROSTBITE SERIES CHAMPION DAVE YOUNG The final day of racing tried to live up to the series' title. Ice flowed in our PRO Hof's veins after spending the better part of an hour chiseling ice out of the Whaler with Anthony's and Ray's help before launching. The water temperature on the lake was 36 degrees; the air temperature was not much greater and what little warmth an occasional bit of sunshine offered was blown away by a 12 knot northerly. And there was current, making the upwind slog all the more painful: 9 minutes of hard hiking to the mark, 4 minutes of wave-riding back. Becca rode those waves fastest in the first race, going low of the rhumb line close to the channel and passing Dave downwind. But that strategy did not pay off in the second race, as Anthony found better pressure from the left side of the course, sailing just above the rhumb line while Dave defended his lead by splitting the difference between them. Greg "felt it" in the third race and finished third in a radial ovelapped with Mike sailing a radial well, too. Alexander had a great start in the second race, tacking immediately to the favored long port tack toward more pressure--too much pressure, when a monster gust wiped out the gains made on the line. Dave won our weather-shortened series, scoring 60% of the races with an impressively low point total of 13. But Becca sailed in and finished every race in the series and had by far the lowest score for the series before "throw out" races were discounted. She was fast and did not make any mistakes, executing a perfect port tack start today. And hats "off" (or better tied "on" in these conditions) to Alexander as well for finishing every race...and to Mikey and Greg for sailing in every race too. Smooth sailing, Bruce 2015 WINTER SERIES with ONE RACE REMAINING
