COMMODORE S COMMENTS As our summer weather comes to an end, nights are getting cooler, kids are back to school and our sailing season is just beginning. We ve been fortunate to experience breezy summer days and I m hopeful that this bodes well for a beautiful fall sailing season. This summer edition of the Anchorline will detail the upcoming sailing and social that I hope you will all join. Please watch for the V-15 Fleet, as they return to HIYC, for the Fall. Big boat sailors are invited to come out and meet potential crew, as the fleet will be seeking volunteers to run fleet races on Sunday afternoons. This is a great way to be first in line, for available crew! Contact Molly Leitch or me, for more information. Your Board of Governors is looking for your assistance in upcoming nominations for your 2016 Board; additionally we are seeking nominations for Senior Governor as current Governor, Bill Putnam will be moving to Jacksonville. We thank Bill for his service to HIYC and wish him well in his new endeavors. As good stewards of HIYC, your Board of Governors will always seek to improve policies and practices that conserve Club resources; to that end, the Board has established policy that club property may not be used for camping or overnight stay, unless members stay on their boat or reserved club Catalina. (exceptions may be granted during sanctioned regattas). Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated and, as always, your input is welcome. Stay tuned to the Anchorline and website for upcoming events and Quarterly Meeting. See you at the Club! Mike Osborne Hiyccommodore@icloud.com IN MEMORIAM Robert Moore was the Everyman to Harbor Island Yacht Club for many years. A tool and die engineer by trade with a degree from Tennessee Tech, he could make any boat part and did, usually for others; and you d better not ask about or offer to pay him! Robert was our first real Harbor Master; he started our annual 4th of July fireworks show, and served many years on the Race Committee. He organized and managed the building of the Courtesy Dock with all volunteer help by members! Shoot, the Club liked him & Donna so much, they made Donna the Commodore! A heart of gold and then some! Robert and Donna started our annual HIYC Christmas Brunch, just about the best annual event at Harbor Island. A couple of things about Robert you need to know to put all his service in perspective: Budweiser is the only beer made and sold in the United States, and Ford is the only manufacturer of trucks. As time passes, I look back on the many fine folks I ve had the pleasure of knowing that made Harbor island what it is today: from O.L., Cully, P. R. and Bob Cotton. Robert Moore stands proud among them now. -Randall Butler Dear Members, Thank you for the beautiful flowers you sent in honor of my Father. Your note and gift brought smiles and relief during our Celebration of Life service. Thank you again for continuing to keep our family in your prayers; it has been a blessing to have so many friends at HIYC. Sincerely, Steve and Pam Vague

Sail Camp 2015 Wrap-Up Another year of too much heat, too little wind, just enough breeze, laughs, splashed, capsize drills, chalk talks, wonderful wind, growing friendships, developing skills and, yes, back by popular demand: tie-dyed tee shirts! During our four, one week sessions in June, nearly 90 campers were coached by 15 counselors, all but one who started sailing at the HIYC Sail Camp. Campers ranged from 7 to 14 and in experience from none to competent competitors. While the less experienced worked on fundamentals, the more skilled raced short, upwind/downwind courses in the harbor. Every Friday, that week s session closed with an awards ceremony where each and every camper received a customized trophy. These are crafted by our creative counselors who come in early Friday to doodle designs on plastic sleeves with an action shot of each camper. Monikers like Most Awesome Opti Princess, Rock Star, Splasher Award, Most Improved Sailor and Future Counselor, are invented by the counselors, much to the delight of the parents as well as their camper kids. Campers were assigned to a tailor-made group. These are usually beginner and advanced groups, littler campers in Opti s, the more proficient in Lasers. The Camp bought a 29er this year a two man boat similar to the Vanderbilt boats and the V15 s. The more skilled campers took turns in the 29er learning the complexities of sailing with main, jib and asymmetrical spinnaker. The Camp is operated by HIYC s 501(c) 3 affiliate, the Nashville Sailing Foundation (NSF), that uses camper fees to employ Greg Theriot (our fixit man, trainer of counselors and Camp Director) plus 15 counselors, ages 14 to 22, most with US Sailing Association Small Boat Instructor Certifications and Red Cross CPR training (classes paid for by NSF). Few, if any, yacht clubs operating camps sustain themselves solely on camper fees and HIYC is no exception. Net camper fees this year of $20,665 covered most of the Camp s $27,392 operating expenses; but, the Club pitches in $4,000 annually and the remainder of the shortfall is covered by charitable, tax deductible contributions, our semi-annual Bilge Sale and the occasional sale of surplus boats. In addition to the paid staff, volunteers from the NSF Board also lend a hand. This year a total of over 200 hours were donated by Dave Brandon, Dave Desforges, Marc Fortune & Jackie Byrom, Rob Hempel, Paul Latour and James O Dell. Patsy Theriot and PPYC member Chris Hellerqvist helped with the tie-dyed tee shirt. Sail Camp was started by Mandy Hofmeister and early, significant contributors to the effort included Barbara Ward, Bill Killebrew and Bruce Richards. This program remains an essential element of what make Harbor Island so special. -Marc Fortune

*** REGATTA TIME IN TENNESSEE *** NOTICE of RACE (Abbreviated) The Iron Skillet Regatta September 12, 2015 Complete Notice of Race available Online at hiyc.org INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Iron Skillet Regatta, September 12, 2015 on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN. HISTORY The Iron Skillet Race was established on the questionable premise that a winning skipper can be a winning chef. Each year, the winning skipper and crew are given an Iron Skillet trophy to be used to prepare a meal the following year for all regatta participants. While the cooking results may not always rank in the Betty Caldwell s top ten for culinary excellence, recent winners have spared little effort in making up with quantity and quality for that which may be lacking in elegance. CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event. * Heavy handicap class A: displacement 5000/Lbs and greater, PHRF ratings of 145 or less, Spinnaker assumed. * Heavy handicap class B: displacement 5000/Lbs and greater, PHRF ratings 146 and greater. Spinnaker assumed, but may sail without spinnaker and take a 12 second allowance. The decision to sail without spinnaker remains in effect for the current year. * Light handicap class. Displacement 4999/Lbs and less, Spinnaker assumed. * JAM class. Jib and Main only. * The Regatta Committee may combine or split classes at its sole discretion. FEES - The Regatta registration fee is $25.00 day of regatta. SCHEDULE $20.00 if pre-registered thru hiyc.org crew page. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2015 SCORING Wind dependent HIYC PHRF handicaps and Time on Time 9:00 am: Registration, Coffee and Donuts adjustment factors will be used. 10:30 am: Skippers Meeting Time Correction Formula (TCF) = 700/(f+PHRF) where f = 11:30 am: Warning Signal 650 for light air, 550 for moderate air, and 450 for Trophy Presentation following race heavy air assessed by the Race Committee. RACING The racing will consist of a river distance course for all classes. No races will be started in less than three (3) knots of sustained wind as determined by the Race Committee. ON-THE-WATER COMMUNICATIONS VHF radio channel 68 will be used by the Race Committee for warnings and communications to the competitors while on the water. All competitors MUST have and use a VHF Radio. INSURANCE - Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance. FURTHER INFORMATION - For further information please contact Steve Vague, or send to: svague007@aol.com.

Welcome Aboard! Jeri and Michael Doebelin We are excited to be new members of the Harbor Island Yacht Club. Jeri grew up in Mayfield, KY and got her BS in Education at Murray State University in Murray, KY and a MA in Education at Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. She lived and taught in Kuwait from , and also visited Syria, France, Germany, and England. She moved to Nashville, TN in Sep 1997and works with me at the same company since 2004 as the office manager and accounting contact. I am originally from Germany where I grew up and got educated, BS/MS in Engineering. I moved in 1987, first to Clearwater FL, where I was a little exposed to sailing, limited to cats. Here in Nashville I run a German subsidiary, a OEM for Machinery, Capital Equipment. We are living just a few miles from the lake, and wanted to take this opportunity to learn sailing. At this time we have only been crewing a few times, and enjoyed it very much. My name is Oskar Groitzsch. I was born and raised in Nashville and I m happy to say I m a new member at HIYC. I fell in love with sailing when I was about 8 or so. My mothers friend had a big cruiser. But for years I never had the chance to enjoy that lifestyle until about six months ago when a good friend of mine invited me to be apart of his crew on the Overlord. I ve never raced a day in my life let alone a sailboat, but I happily said yes acting like I knew what I was getting myself into. Driving to HIYC come race day I felt the excitement and love I had when I was a little kid running around on the deck except this time I was here to stay. Now I m the proud new owner of a Gulf Coast 18 and it s an honor to be able to call myself a member of HIYC and also a crew member of the Overlord. I don t always win races but when I do it s on the Overlord. Webmaster Report This month s report will be short and sweet. I had planned to do a report on the Racing section of the site; but by request from the Board, this month s report is on the new regatta preregistration system. In the coming weeks and months, we ll have new pre-registration forms which can be filled out on the website, allowing you to get a $5 registration discount over the day -of-regatta price. It will also allow you, the competitor, to view your competition for the regatta. One item of note, this is only required for skippers. Other crew members do not need to register. As of now, only the McDougall Open has a pre-registration page, and early bird discount; however this may eventually be expanded to all regattas. That decision is up to our Board of Governors. The new registration form can be reached from the McDougall page, or directly via this link: Once you register, your name and information will appear in the table below the form. A date stamp is automatically generated upon submittal. The race committee will accept pre-registrations up until 12am on the day of the regatta. The RC will use the date stamp to determine who has registered in time for the discount. So, if you re planning on racing, let us know early and save a cool 5-spot. Drew Griswold - HIYC Webmaster

Sea Scout News In the last Anchorline I made mention of the fact that two of our female youth are working on becoming the first female in Tennessee to achieve the highest rank in Sea Scouting of Quarter Master. And that one of the requirements is to do a 40 hour cruise. Thus Thursday evening May 28 th Sarah Taylor along with her rag tag crew left the HIYC dock on board the Sea Scout s San Juan 23. During their cruise they experienced a storm, had mechanical problems and learned a lot about being self-sufficient. They also had a great time. Additionally during this 40 hour period we had adults at the club for just in case something came up that the Scouts could not handle. And yes Saturday morning a call did come in. It turns out that according to the schedule our Scouts were to be back at the dock at noon on Saturday. But the wind was blowing and they were having such a good time they called to ask permission to add a couple of hours so they could enjoy the conditions. Then two weeks later Gina Beckman led a group of canoes for a 40 hour adventure on Reelfoot Lake. They visited a couple of Islands. Saw some eagles and worked their way through some of the cypress knees. Overnighting on an island and enjoying a camp fire were some additional highlights of this trip. But unlike Sarah s cruise, the leaders went with the scouts via their own canoes. In other news our Thursday evening sailing conditions have been much better this summer than last summer. Both of our Oday 17 s have been used a lot and our blue Oday 17 has recently received a brand new mainsail. Then a few weeks ago I received an interesting call from a gentleman in Murfreesboro. He is in his late 70 s and no longer able to use his Lightning and wanted to donate it to the Sea Scouts. But the catch was that he was moving and if we were to get the boat it had to be that afternoon or within the next two days. This was a Wednesday afternoon. Thursday afternoon Brian Laidlaw took off work early and drove to Murfreesboro and picked up the boat. Then that evening at our weekly Sea Scout meeting we got to see our new Lightning. But the wind was blowing so the kids decided to sail the Oday s instead of working with the new boat. In fact set up of the Lightning had to wait another two weeks because the wind kept blowing and for some reason our scouts wanted to sail instead of working on boats. But at the next meeting we basically finished rigging the boat and although it was getting late and the wind was light, the scouts had to take it for a quick spin around the harbor. Yes the boat has some problems such as a side stay with a turn buckle that will not tighten. But this is going to be a great boat for those ready to advance beyond the O day 17 s.
