2 Welcome Aboard! James Winton & Bertha Winton Bertha suffers from dementia and doesn t get far from the house. If you see me with someone it is most likely my dear friend and sailing partner, Melanie Mundy, who joined me for the Chili Cook Off. Had my first sailing experience on a E Scow at 16 and was hooked. Built a plywood Sailfish in my basement and sailed it all over Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio. Moved up to an Interlake while living in Ohio, and brought it down to HIYC in 1980 when we lived in Brentwood. Moved it to Lake Norman near Charlotte, NC in Have had some experience in racing on keel boats on Lake Norman and on Percy Priest. I m partially retired, have a lot of control of my schedule, and am hoping to get on the water more. If you need crew and don t mind if they are a lot older than you give me a call. James Winton Fall Clean-up and Maintenance Day Saturday October 29 Work begins at 0900 hrs. Over fifty years ago, the founders of our club made it very clear that the spirit and future of HIYC depended on each member, paying their dues, playing by the rules, AND contributing time to the maintence and upkeep of our grounds and structures. Volunteers run and maintain our sailing club on a daily basis. IN ADDITION.. Two Saturdays each calendar year, we ask every member to join in caring for HIYC. Projects to include: Mooring field updates, deep cleaning the clubhouse, repairs and cleaning of our docks, and club boats, fall maintenance of our grounds and parking areas Photos in this issue by Carol Owen, Andy Griswold, Cindy Lovelace, Randall Butler, & Brian Smolker Please send current event or racing photos for the next issue of the Anchorline to: lovelace.gene@gmail.com and hiycwebmaster@gmail.com for website and FB page.

3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Ahoy, I just finished a beautiful early fall, solo sail on FLORA, my beloved black Northstar. Better still, it was a Monday morning, so guess what? I had the lake all to myself! And I thought, as I almost always do when sailing alone why don t I do this more often? In the old days when I was building my company, raising three wonderful children and serving on several non-profit boards, I would force myself to carve out some therapeutic time and set sail a necessary decompression so I could stand up to my many responsibilities. Currently, at a more advanced age as the kids call it, I don t feel as much need for this, as life is less stressful and simpler now. But the need to be on the water is still there. Yes, I love to race (which characterizes most of my sailing time) or make destination sails, like my recent trip from Bermuda to Newport; but, just being out there, alone, reflecting on big picture stuff has always been an essential ingredient to my sanity albeit questionable, I ll admit. So, why all this about me? It s not about me; it s about you. So many unsailed boats out here, just begging to be rail down, with a full crew or just the skipper. Or in a cove, with a close friend, newspaper and hot coffee or a cold drink. Whatever, let s just do it. After all, that s why we re at Harbor Island, isn t it?? Less philosophical items that may be of interest: Unremarkable Quarterly Meeting; light attendance, great chili, no debates, except for one of our more memorable public pronouncements: Vice Commodore Randall Butler is resolved to Make Harbor Island great again. I will build a wall around the Tiki Hut. And Joe Ballard is going to pay for it! Great McDougal Regatta on October 8 th ; weather, Race Committee, competition, camaraderie Beautiful wedding of Steve Vague s daughter ( The Clubhouse never looked better he said) Completion of repairs to B Dock electrical service McDougal Open on the 22 nd Cleanup Day on the 29 th Come November: o Election Day 8 th (bring your barf bag) o Veterans Day, 11 th (Thanks, Dad!) o Arnold Nye Regatta, 12 th (plus a big dining event that evening) o Beesley 50k, 19 th o Turkey Day, 24 th Two other reminders o if you are not receiving the weekly Friday morning Scuttlebutt, please let me know the address where you d like to receive it o please keep your dog leashed Hope to see you on your boat on the water, Marc Fortune, Commodore

6 Lotsa Lasers 2016 As regatta champion John Coolidge ghosted across the finish line of the first race Sunday morning in a dying harbor thermal he hailed the finish line boat, Any more races today? To which race committee member Peter Bennett, recording finishes on the weather mark boat replied, Oh there s no end to the misery Bruce can inflict. Indeed there was plenty of misery to go around, if one were fortunate enough to get around - -the course, that is. As Hof reminds us, Anyone can sail when there is wind. Try sailing when there is none. And much of his pre-race tutorial on light air sailing, referencing the counsel of national champions and the experience of local legends, proved to be prescient. Stay close to the starting line, keep moving, sit forward, be still, be patient, heel to windward downwind with boom eased past perpendicular, guess and go. Even so, it was possible to reach a point less than a meter from the finish line, come to stop on a vacuous header, be knocked back two boatlengths by motorboat waves, recover one boatlength in a whiff and then come to a stop again, never to finish the race Misery loves company and there was plenty of commiseration in good company over lasagna and salad and garlic bread and ice cream Saturday night with John Coolidge holding a two point lead over last year s winner, Mike Osborne. Birthday Boy and first race winner Ted Chapin was third. Mandy Hofmeister and Chan Owen shone Sunday morning and moved up in the final standings but John Coolidge sailed consistently enough to win - - by one point. The pairing of Ania Gorska and Joey Roberts won the MOP (Middle of the Pack Award), Brian Smokler the Bookend Award and a determined Sam Smokler the First Junior Award. Conveniently, there were 17 awards for the 17 sailors. But between the bookends there were treasures even more prized than the awards: more books from a passionate sailor s nautical library, finding new readers and kindling more dreams. Thanks to Carol Lea and Libby Willis and Joey Roberts on the race committee boat (except when they were off the committee boat for a swim!); to Peter Bennett, with guest Jon Whitfield Saturday and Sarajane McMahon Sunday, on the weather mark boat, providing great advice as always about wind and course location and race management; to Paul Latour for sharing his nimble Scout which served as the weather mark boat, to Jim Milliman and Tim Poulan Saturday and Jim Waller Sunday aboard the Whaler managing the starting lines and leeward gates and serving as a safety boat; to Kathy Osborne for handling registration; to Greg Theriot for preparing the club boats for more participants than we have had in years; to Chandler Owen for pressure washing the docks to Michael Underwood for preparing dinner and to all those who helped out in the kitchen and as always to HIYC s support of one-design sailing in general and to this traditional weekend of Laser racing in particular. Smooth sailing, Bruce Richards, PRO and regatta organizer

11 Sea Scout News I have stated many times that this organization is run by the youth with some adult supervision. And sometimes what they come up is a bit in left field so to say. In late September they decided to play Capture-the-Flag. This is a game normally played on land between two teams each trying to capture the other team s flag. But this was to be done on the water. I just knew it was going to be a disaster but turned out to be one of the best water games I ve seen in awhile. Each team had three row boats and a canoe and they chased each other all over the course and had a great time and learned a lot about working with these craft too. I could see this as being a fun event for next year s 4 th of July celebration. Any time there is a Scout event the rules require two deep leadership. That is two leaders present for the protection of both the youth and the leaders. A few weeks ago our Scouts decided to have an overnighter. Our numbers have grown and thus coordinating more members becomes more difficult. It turned out a Friday evening would work for the most youth. Saturday evening was out. So at that Thursday meeting the youth started planning the event to be held the very next night. Who was going to be on which boats, how was food to be handled and who was picking it up etc. Then the youth ran into a problem. If there are to be both boys and girls on the overnighter you must have at least one male and one female leader present. After all this planning they realized that although there were three female leaders that could come there were no male leaders that could come. Ok so much for an overnighter in September. We had our regular closing and I headed home confident that the youth would come up with an alternate date in early October. But Friday morning I got a call asking if my Pearson 30, Triad could be used by the girls for an overnight that night. We don t need the boys to have a good time they said. So Triad was made ready including cleaning her four berths. It was going to be a bit tight as five girls were planning on coming. But all these youth are small and it was not to be a problem. My other Pearson 30, Makena was to be used by the female leaders. Saturday morning I headed out to the club to see how it went. And to my surprise I found that not five but six girls had stayed on Triad. And all had slept very well. And by the time I had arrived both boats were cleaned and ready to be put away. And yes they had a very good time. But we have another overnight coming up in late October where we will be taking several boats down by the Old Hickory Dam for the weekend. We will be taking part in the Hermitage District Boy Scout Camporee. I know our Scouts will have a good time and it s a great way to let others know about our group. And who knows we may just pick up yet another youth or two as a result of the event. Guess I should mention that Makena was raced by the boys in the McDougal regatta in lots of wind. And they had a great time too. Even if the girls were not on the boat..andy
