2 Sail Camp 2016 Remember when you learned to sail? Whether yesterday or yesteryear, it was a life changing experience. Truth be told, you (and I) are still learning one of the joyous things about our love of sailing. Well, let s pass it on to the next generation (, for some of us old farts, to the third generation). It can all start with Sail Camp As in the past, Camp will operate four separate sessions in June, Monday through Friday, starting on June 6, 13, 20 and 27. Kids from 7 to 14 are welcome and it is not restricted to HIYC members. This is our opportunity to serve the Nashville community and open our sailing home to the rest of the world.

3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Greetings all, Most of us are familiar with a burgee exchange. This occurs when a visiting yachtsman visits another club and swaps his club s burgee for theirs. To wit, the recent exchange between me and Paul White, our red-socked Hoosier visitor who has assisted our Race Committee on the past three OL Shultz Alive Hospice Regattas. Former Commodore Nelson Miller, who manages our growing display of burgees from other clubs that have exchanged with us, will soon be placing the Indianapolis Sailing Club burgee that Paul White presented high in our Clubhouse along with the more than 100 burgees we now have. So where did this exchange arrangement come from? Many sources I ve checked refer to the time honored tradition of such exchanges. But nowhere, not in Yachting Customs and Courtesies by Tringali or Chapman s Piloting, Seamanship and Small Boat Handling nor any of the many books I searched could I find the origins of this tradition. I did discover that the Sportsman Yearbook for 1880 lists over 50 Yacht and Sailing Clubs (including the world s oldest the Royal Cork, that HIYC has exchanged burgees with (look in the Clubhouse, just below the large tattered HIYC burgee across from the fireplace) and discovered that they all have burgees, therein described in some detail. Then I found an interesting quote from the North German Regatta Club in 1913 referring to their burgee: "With pride and joy we have received it from the hand of the king as a guarantee of the warm interest of our highest commander in the fate of our club, as a jewel, which we will always honour, which should bring us to manly action, to serious work, to faithfull fulfillment of duty." So, with editorial license, I suggest that these exchanges are consistent with the Harbor Island Corinthian spirit; with pride and joy, we receive the exchange which we will always honor, which should bring us to manly action. Anyway. In addition to burgee exchanges, the Club and its calendar are chock full of good stuff, including a breather from two weeks of racing for Alive Hospice, a respite from the mini-camp we sponsored for a dozen 7 th graders, preparation for the Konesky Great River Race, the Double Hander and Cheeseburger in Paradise, and then on to Sail Camp in June. All this plus members working on their boats, some here, some in Kentucky; island hopping and off-shore passages; births, deaths, recoveries and renewals. What a community we have. Take some time to get to know your fellow club members, new and tenured, those in need and those offering assistance. What a community we have! Marc@MarcFortune.com

Each name called represents someone special In Honor of or In Memory of, as each skipper steps forward to accept the burgee(s) to be flown on his/her boat. Donations are made to Alive Hospice and the burgees are returned to the donors following the two weekends of racing. O. L. 9 Sea Scout News Sometimes they just don t listen to me. And this can be a good thing. Every Wednesday I send out an blast to our Sea Scout members. This includes our Scouts, their parents, our Sea Scout leaders and our HIYC board members. In this I discuss what we ll be doing at the meeting that Thursday evening and any upcoming events. Wednesday April 13 th I discussed the need to practice for the upcoming Tolling of the Bell ceremony and to prepare Triad our Pearson 30 for the O.L. Shultz Hospice regatta. Plus cleaning our Oday 17s up as they had just been brought out of winter storage. I saw no need of considering sailing as the forecast was for very light winds. Plus there was a lot to do already. I had arrived at 5:00pm to be able to finish some paperwork before the meeting started at 6:00pm. But by 5:25 youth started arriving and all they could think about was getting out on the water. I had a short discussion with one of the youth leaders and then went back to work. I emerged from the club house just after 6:00. And what I found was both of our Oday 17s out on the water with four youth on each. Plus two row boats in use and an adult working with another couple of youth concerning how to work the motor on one of the club s small Boston Whalers. Thirteen youth in all out on the water. Having a great time and learning too. And yes cleaning on Triad got done even if it was dark when they finished. And a bit of ceremony practice happened too. And this sort of thing has been a common problem with these kids for years. I ll show up with a full evening planned for inside only to find the wind blowing and kids wanting to do nothing but sail. And what a wonderful problem it is. Each month the HIYC board meets to discuss issues associated with the running of the club. And I often give a report or ask questions concerning the Sea Scouts. At the March meeting I was to be asking for the purchase of a proper inside display American flag and to find out if our Scouts were to be performing the Tolling of the Bells ceremony again this year at the Hospice Regatta. I should note that this was just a few days after our Scouts had performed a flag retirement ceremony before the March Winds regatta. Before the board meeting our commodore Marc Fortune was talking about how moving the flag retirement was. And then he turned to one of the new board members and with an excited voice said And wait till you see the kids perform the Tolling of the Bell ceremony. Ok scratch that one off the list. Only needed to get permission to purchase the flag. Andy Griswold

10 The Konesky Great River Race May 14, 2016 NOTICE OF RACE (Abbreviated) Complete Notice of Race available Online at hiyc.org INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Konesky Great River Race, May 14, 2016 on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN. HISTORY - In December 2009, a much requested new spring Regatta for cruising boats was added to the HIYC calendar to take advantage of early spring winds and weather. The Board of Governors had been looking for a way to honor one of its long time racing enthusiasts, former Commodore, Stann Trophy Award, Caldwell Service Award and Iros Cruising Award recipient Chuck Konesky. A member since 1977, Chuck has been an avid racer on numerous boats from Lightning's and J-Boats to his larger C&C cruising sailboats. Throughout the years, not only has Chuck proven to be extremely successful and competitive on the race course, he has also exemplified the True Corinthian Spirit our club strives for. After announcing the new regatta and consulting with Chuck about possible racing formats for this new Regatta named in his honor, the one thing Chuck wanted most was to get members who normally don t race out on the lake enjoying our wonderful sport. From this idea, the J.A.M. Fleet (Jib and Main No Spinnakers) was born at Harbor Island. The HIYC Board recently voted to convert this successful fleet to it s own class Class C: Non-Spinnaker. The Konesky Great River Race is always a challenge for true racers and those new to racing, as well as giving true cruisers the opportunity to get out and sail with and against their friends CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event. Class A Heavy displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings of 145 or less, Spinnaker assumed. Class B Heavy handicap class B: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings 146 and greater. Spinnaker assumed, but may sail without spinnaker and take a 12 second allowance. The decision to sail without spinnaker remains in effect for the current year. Class C: Non Spinnaker Light handicap class. Displacement below 4999, Spinnaker assumed.the Regatta Committee may combine or split classes at its sole discretion. FEES - The Regatta registration fee is $20.00 on line $25.00 day of Race SCHEDULE RACING SATURDAY, May 14, :00 am: Registration, Coffee and Donuts 10:30 am: Skippers Meeting 11:55 am: Warning Signal Trophy Presentation following race SCORING The racing will consist of a river distance course for all classes. Wind dependent HIYC PHRF handicaps and Time on Time adjustment factors will be used. Time Correction Formula (TCF) = 700/(f+PHRF) where f = 650 for light air, 550 for moderate air, and 450 for heavy air as assessed by the Race Committee. No races will be started in less than three (3) knots of sustained wind as determined by the Race Committee. INSURANCE - Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance. FURTHER INFORMATION - For further information please contact Race Committee Tim Naeser

11 The Double Handed Regatta Complete Notice of Race available Online at hiyc.org INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and one crew to attend the Double Handed Regatta, May 28, 2016 on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN. HISTORY In a time long ago, sailors looked down upon the one hand, and observed it to have a thumb and four digits. On the other hand, the observation was identical upon its reflection into the abyss, or when both were held high. At that very moment, sailors worldwide found it to be prudent to utilize this very other hand as well; instead of such a singular pursuit. Ah ha! Sailing was best when experienced with another hand. The old salts began to share this sage advice thru out the known world: Always use both hands! Henceforth, a hand has always been freely offered at the cessation of any favorable performance. RULES The race will be governed by the rules as defined by The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event. Heavy handicap class A: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings of 145 or less, Spinnaker assumed. Heavy handicap class B: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings 146 and greater. Spinnaker assumed, but may sail without spinnaker and take a 12 second allowance. The decision to sail without spinnaker remains in effect for the current year. Light handicap class. Displacement below 4999, Spinnaker assumed. C class. Non-Spnnaker FEES - The Regatta registration fee is $20.00 SCHEDULE SATURDAY, May :00 am: Registration, Coffee and Donuts 10:30 am: Skippers Meeting 11:55 am: Warning Signal RACING The racing will consist of a river distance course for all classes. THE SITE, RACING AREA AND COURSE The racing area is between mile Cumberland River and mile 227 on Old Hickory Lake. The Distance Course will begin at a starting line between mile 220 and mile 225. The course will be further described in the Sailing Instructions. When a boat sailing under these rules meets a vessel that is not, the rules of Part 2 (When Boats Meet) are replaced by the Inland Navigation Rules. Any boat impeding the passage of a right-of-way vessel is subject to protest by the race committee or the protest committee. ON-THE-WATER COMMUNICATIONS All competitors are required to have a VHF radio and monitor channel 68. INSURANCE - Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance. FURTHER INFORMATION - For further information please contact Race Committee Tim Naeser
