3 COMMODORES COMMENTS - September 2006 Over the past few months many club members have worked to improve the appearance of the entry area of our club. I d like to borrow a quote from one of them, It is amazing how much better the place looks! I m sure that we all agree. I would like to recognize several people who have made significant differences in what we look like to those passing by. Roger Maxwell has spearheaded the re-construction of our yacht basin. With the assistance of a few members, he has just completed a major upgrading of our mooring field and has identified and developed records for all of the boats that are assigned a mooring space. Roger has ably served nearly five years as our Harbor Master. He has been a generous friend and a help to all of us. With this task completed he feels that this is a good time for him to step back and allow a new Harbor Master to direct traffic in the harbor. The Board of Governors joins with me in sincerely thanking him. We hope to recognize his contributions to the club in a special way at the next Quarterly Meeting. I am pleased to report that Joe Ballard has agreed to step in as Harbor Master for the rest of the year. Thanks Joe. A few days ago I came across a photograph of the old clubhouse taken about a year ago. It was a strikingly different image from what we see today. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Beth and John Marshall for organizing the painting of the building this spring and steadily working since then to keep its appearance neat and uncluttered. Great job. Mike Birk joined HIYC perhaps a year ago. I mean his whole family really joined the club. Mike, with his sons Matt and Alex and grandson Tyler, planned and carried out the repairs on the old clubhouse this spring. When the Long Planning Committee recommended that we construct a concrete pad at the boat hoist to promote more centerboard boat sailing, the Birks organized this project and did a large part of the work. When Mike learned that we obtained a grant to install a waste pump out station on the dock, he was the first to ask how he could help with the project. Speaking of the pump out station, we have supplied all of the required information to the State of Tennessee Water Pollution Control Division and requested a permit to operate the system. The on-shore storage tank will be emptied by a licensed sewage waste hauler and trucked to the Lebanon sewage treatment facility for disposal. A 30-day Public Notice of this installation and disposal method will now be posted. After that step we will order the equipment begin installation. The Harbor Island subdivision is now 50 years old. Under State Law the present restrictive covenants for Harbor Island expire at the end of this year. The island s homeowners association has for the past few months been working on an extension of the covenants. HIYC, as a property owner on the island, has now received a copy of the proposed new By-Laws and Restrictive Covenants. Our Board is currently studying these documents carefully. We are fortunate to have Cully Ward who serves HIYC as its legal officer. He will be assisting our Board in fully understanding the content of these documents and their ramifications on Harbor Island Yacht Club. We want to thank Cully for this valuable assistance. It s easy to be Commodore when we have so many members keenly interested in the future of the club. Many thanks to all of you. Ken Tempelmeyer, Commodore 3
4 Sea Scout News You would think that after spending 9 days together on our trip to the Apostle Islands that the kids would have had enough of each other and of sailing for a while. But NO!!! The Scouts decided that Monday July 3 rd, the day after we got back that we would have our regular weekly meeting. Additionally it was Julie s birthday and she wanted to go sailing after the meeting as her birthday gift. You would think she got enough sailing on Lake Superior. Then the following Saturday we had 23 to go to the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie together with a laser sailing afternoon and evening following the movie. What a great group we have. It almost seems like the more sailing we do the more they want. Additionally they keep bringing more friends. I do not know how long it will last but since we got back from our trip we have had kids at every meeting. Additionally after a short meeting on Tuesday evenings we ve been going sailing. Five to Six cruisers have been involved in all our evening outings. Some times we have had good wind others the wind did not come through so we ended up with some great water fights. Saturday July 22 was a particularly interesting day. Two things were going on at the club and both had Sea Scout involvement. First there was a rules seminar for which the Sea Scouts were providing lunches. Second we were hosting a local Cub Scout Pack for a day of sailing. To my amazement we had plenty of personnel for both despite the fact that the Cub Scout group had some 60 which all got to go sailing. To make this happen, four lasers, two Opti s, a Dyer Dingy and 5 cruisers were used. Thanks go to John Tayler, Kent Martin, David Poirier and Randy White for the use of their boats. Triad was also used. Additionally Bruce Richards was there to help set up and take down lasers. I do believe this was the largest group we have ever hosted. Watching the Scouts and the professionalism they exhibited in putting this thing on was quite impressive. And it was clear that a good time was had by all. Sunday August 6 th we hosted over 20 youth from St. Stevens Church just down the road. Although this was not an official Sea Scout event, several of the Scouts assisted in putting this on. The Tempelmeyers also helped with this event. For this evening the winds did not appear but we were prepared. Each boat had multiple biodegradable water balloons, water guns and buckets. Six boats headed out into the lake and soon the water was flying. Everyone was having a good time and several other club boats came by to check out the action. Some even got into the water fight with us. It was a great evening. And you guessed it. At our next meeting there were some new faces that had just had there first boat ride with water fight a few days before. We re going to hate to see the shorter days of fall and the end of our Tuesday evening sailing adventures. But the kids have already planned several overnighters and involvement in other events such as regatta s. So clearly the fun and learning will be continuing. Andy & Cathy Griswold Special Thanks for a Job Well Done 7 A special thanks to Joe Ballard, Mike Birk, his son Matt and Alex for there efforts in planning and installing the new concrete apron under the dinghy hoist. Other members contributing time and effort toward this project, including Bruce Campbell, Ken Todd, Roger Maxwell, Tom Allen, Keith Chafin, Jan Mattix, Bruce Richards, Scott Howard Mark Stanley, Chan Owen and Bob Cotton.

9 POST SHRIMP BOIL REPORT AL Star Reporter: Beverly Caldwell Once again the annual HIYC Shrimp Boil proved to be a favorite event. Our dinner raft-up included 18 boats and about three times that many sailors and friends. The weather could not have been a happier surprise with temperatures around 10 degrees cooler than previous weekends. It was the perfect evening for swimming and socializing out on the water! Dinner included Marian Maxwell s famous rosemary potatoes, & Beth Marshall s terrific Caribbean slaw, as well as shrimp prepared by Roger Maxwell, Al Bronner and their team. A full stomach and good time was had by all! As first time hostesses of this event, Beth & I would like to thank Roger & Marian Maxwell, Al & Diane Bronner, Ken & Sally Todd, Donna Copeland, Gina Rawls, and of course our husbands, David Caldwell & John Marshall for their much needed help. We could not have done it without the A-TEAM! Also, special thanks to Jeanette Levine for providing the shrimp at wholesale cost and to Susan Trigg for her generous donation of souvenir Shrimp Boil 2006 cups. As you can see, the evening was truly a team effort. Thanks again to all of you who helped and to those of you who attended! See you at the club, Beverly Caldwell Fun was had by everyone at the Annual Shrimp Boil Sixteen boats rafted up. Photo: Beverly Caldwell & Glen Sherwin 9
