I hope you're having a great summer. It's time to think about renewing your Flying Dutchmen membership. I'll be sending the renewal notices out by the middle of August. Please return your completed form and $25 check no later than September 30, 2007, or give them to me at a meeting. Any renewals postmarked after that date are subject to the $10 initiation fee. For $25 you get great ski shop discounts, inexpensive ski or snowboard lessons, lift ticket discounts, a variety of trips and social events, a monthly newsletter, and an affordable lodge in the Poconos. What a deal! Please remember to take a few minutes to provide us with feedback on the renewal form. The BOD is always looking for ways to improve our club, and we welcome all your comments and suggestions. We're also always in need of volunteers to help with various functions. Be sure to check the appropriate boxes on the renewal form to let us know your areas of interest and whether you're willing to volunteer. Helping at a ski club event is a fun and rewarding experience. It's also a great way to get involved and meet other members. See you at the next meeting! Sue Club member, Brian Muller, gave a very interesting, informative presentation on kite boarding at the July meeting. Program Director Jeff Rapp Hello, A volunteer: Is one who performs or gives services of his own free will. To enter into or offer to enter into an undertaking of one's own free will. This is what we live by as members of the Flying Dutchmen Ski Club and for the time we give, the board members cook a meal and a good one at that. Chicken, steak, corn on the cob, drinks of all kinds, and lots of food. This takes place in the Liederkranz's back yard on August 2nd before the General Meeting. At this time a bagpiper will play for us and then talk a little as a program after the meeting. So in respect to all and to make the day different, we ask you to dig out your best kilt. Under garment optional. The best time of all is almost upon us; Trip Night is just around the corner. This takes off at the September 6th meeting. There is fun to be had by all, skiers and non-skiers. You get to travel with the club and enjoy the time of others in a different place and ski with old and new friends. I'll end my article this month with a goal to live by: Share, give and enjoy what you do. Thank you to all of you who give. I'll see ya at a meeting. Ski u later, J

3 Publicity Director Kim Wittich Hi everyone, I can't wait to see everyone at the Member's Appreciation Picnic this month. (Are you having Deja vue? Yes, this is the same way I started my article last month. I was just a month ahead of myself.) Now, I really can't wait-i'm still looking for Irish plaid to wear that night. Hope to see everyone dressed for the bagpiper. Well, here it is; the always anticipated Trip Edition. I can't believe we are planning ski trips as I sit here in the sweltering 92 degree heat. As usual, there is a great selection to choose from. Another sign that we are approaching ski season is that the ski shops are back advertising in Skitrails beginning this month with Pinnacle Sports. Soon we will be shopping for those summer ski deals! I ve also included an article on General Conditioning to help you get ready for the slopes. Before I get ahead of myself, there is still plenty of summer left. As promised, the details for the golf outing are in this edition. Also, Ed Soja still has a few tickets left for the Dutchmen Night at the Reading Phillies, so don't wait to long to get your ticket. Have a great month! Kim Annual FDSC Golf Outing Sunday, September 9, 2007 Green Acres Golf Course, Bernville, PA Attention golfers and golfer want-to-be's! It's that time of year again. Join us for the annual FDSC Golf Outing. The final details and pricing are still being worked out. As always, the price will be reasonable and include: Golf (price will be based on walking. Cart fees will be approximately $10 per person additional, paid at the course that day if you want to ride.) Munchies and beverages at the first and tenth tees Food, beverages, and prizes in the pavilion after golf Tee off times start around 11:00am. Team Format (your choice): Play your own ball Scramble format (The scramble format is lots of fun, as your foursome plays as a team, picking the best tee shot out of four and everyone playing from that spot, etc.) Sign up with your own foursome, or sign up individually and you will be paired with a compatible group of Dutchmen golfers. Remember, you don't need to be a really accomplished golfer to play that day, just willing to have some fun and participate. Let us know when you sign up whether you prefer the individual score division or scramble team format. Call Ed Soja ( ), Holly Trout ( ), Diane Ferro ( ), Dave Coffey ( ), or Sue McMullen ( ) to sign up for the golf outing, and make checks payable to FDSC. Golfers will be assigned a specific tee time and notified the week before the event of your tee time and playing partners, so please include your phone # and/or address when you sign up. If you have any extra time and can help to solicit prize donations from area businesses, merchants and restaurants, please call Ed, Holly, Diane, Dave, or Sue to volunteer. Please review the proposed budget below. You will be asked to vote on the proposed budget at the August General Meeting FDSC Budget Membership 21,000 Social 0 Trips (1,000) Lodge 800 Administration (3,500) Competition (450) Discount Skiing (3,300) Programs (2,000) Publicity (9,300) Skimeister (2,250) BALANCED BUDGET $0.00 CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS: (These will be stated separately going forward from normal operating expenses.) 4 4 Ski Trails Social Director Patti Spitler Summer is a time for grilling outdoors, sitting back with a cold one, and having a great conversation with some good friends. If that floats your boat...well then, I have the place to be on Thursday, August 2nd. The Liederkranz...yes, I said the Liederkranz. If you come, you will see the board grilling steaks and chicken. We will be serving hot steamed corn, salad and desserts. You can pick up a cold one (wine, beer, soda or water) from one of the two bartenders (Sean or Frank), and you can choose anyone there to have a good conversation with. The cost for all volunteers is $3.00 and for all other members, the cost is $ Come out and enjoy the evening. August 3rd, a Friday night Happy Hour, is scheduled to be at Genetti s Mini Golf. What a great night to come out for a little competition with friends. Genetti s offers a wide variety of Snack Bar items, including burgers, dogs, chicken fingers, fries and pizza. They also have 20 flavors of hard ice cream, sundaes, Italian ice and other snacks for us to munch on. The cost per person is $ $6.00, (depending on how many we have - for a group rate). This sounds like a great way for you golfers to practice your putting skill for the upcoming Golf Outing, which is September 9th, at Green Acres. Thanks to Ed Soja for graciously taking over this event. He will have some big shoes to fill, relieving Sue McMullen and Dave Coffey from their Tour of Duty. Check out the specifics on the Golf Outing in this edition of Skitrails. Wait, we aren't done with August... The Reading Phillies are looking for Dutchmen to come to their home field and watch them, PLAY BALL!!! Come out on Thursday, August 23rd at 6pm. The cost for this evening out is $24.00 pp. It includes an all you can eat buffet, refreshments, access to the pool and after the game Fireworks. The game has been SOLD OUT and no other tickets will be available. Ed has 30 tickets, and it is a first come first serve (with payment), basis. Ed informed us that he has a few tickets left so don't drop the ball...get your tickets, now!!! Friday, August 24th is our Happy Hour at the new Hooters club. Afterwards, we are invited to be the "guests" at The Reading Comedy Club, with club member Todd Hiester. He has given me vouchers for anyone interested in going, please call me in advance for these vouchers, and let's make a good showing at the Comedy Club. If you went last year, you'll remember is was a "hoot". FYI-Due to the inclement weather on Thursday, July 5th, the Annual Beer Hunt had to be cancelled. It will not be rescheduled, due to the Members Appreciation Picnic in August and Trip Night in September. One little note: Jim Dolan self proclaimed victory on this event, as he found the 5 cases of beer in my car...hee hee... Keep on Talking, Patti Competition Jim Dolan Editor's note: Our Competition Director is working out of the country for a few months and since there is not much news related to ski racing during these lazy, hazy days of summer, we thought you might like to read an excerpt from Jim's Japan Travelogue. Hello from Japan, well, I'm not sure where to start? I started in Harrisburg at 5 am Monday. I arrived Tue at 10 pm, which is 11 am Tues your time. Long day. I was able to sleep on the plane. The company put me in business class ( which is highly recommended.) My plane route over here went Harrisburg to Atlanta, Atlanta heading west to Seoul, Korea (that was 14 hours) then to Osaka, Japan. I am still adjusting my sleep. Went to bed at 11 pm after my flight and woke up ready to go at 3:30 am. That just ain't right... Japanese people are very friendly and helpful. There is a lot of English or pictures with the signs. If that doesn't work you can always point. Most Japanese try to speak English to you. It is a very proper city, everything runs like a Swiss watch. Also, this place is so clean. You could eat out of the gutters but, I won't unless it's my only choice between that or sushi. I have not seen one piece of trash lying around. I didn't get to see much except the airport. The guys leaving say it is pretty boring around here. There is close to no night life ( bars, umm gentlemen's clubs or happy hours.) Good news, there is beer in the vending machine in the hotel for 350 yen, which is about $3. The exchange rate is 120 yen per dollar. That doesn't sound bad but, things are very expensive. I had my first experience with Japanese fish. It was cooked though. I ate a tuna fish samich from Subway. Yes, they have it all here. Japanese eating customs/manners are very different. There is a lot of shoveling and slurping. I had breakfast in the hotel this am which was cafeteria/buffet style. They have no problem moving you through the line. They're bumping your elbows with the tray behind you. If you don't do the same, some will jump in front of you. And last but not least, I have checked out some of the skiing here. It looks as if the indoor and outdoor resorts are closed for the season. Gee, maybe this will be my Sept ski trails article. I have more to write about, but I will save some for next time. I have observed a lot in a short amount of time. Jim

For trip details please contact: Gary Spatz Gspatz@verizon.net Brian Muller skifast@comcast.net Ski Fitness-General Conditioning Courtesy of ABC-of-Skiing.com It is very important to be physically ready before you go Skiing. Being in shape does not only lead to a smoother body motion. It also enhances your Skiing skills and makes them more fun to do. Getting in shape to prepare you on the tough demands of Skiing requires a lot of commitment and discipline. Do not dare try to Ski yourself into shape. Doing so will only make you feel tired more easily and more susceptible to Skiing injuries. If possible, do some moderate Exercises for several weeks, or at least a month or two before Skiing to strengthen and to make your tendons, muscles, and ligaments flexible. You will soon realize that doing this prior to Skiing can reduce chances of getting injured. Moreover, you will not get tired easily and there is faster improvement. Basically, there are three elements to Ski Fitness which can really aid you in Skiing- Flexibility, Strength Training, and Cardiovascular (Aerobic) Endurance. Strength Training Is very imperative in maintaining a solid athletic position all throughout a long day of Skiing. Muscular Strength develops a skier's ability to relax and be in control at the same time. It also improves your skill of handling fast adjustments in case of uneven terrains. You need multidimensional athletic capabilities which involve physical and technical skills. A skier must be able to surmount the laws of motion and force with exact body control and effectively slide down the slope. Without Strength Training, you will feel worn-out early on and sore the following day. Since Skiing will primarily make use of your legs, engage in some activities such as Hiking and other active sports which can develop your leg muscles. Moreover, focus on your quadriceps, since they do most of the work on the downhill. Flexibility Is the most important physical conditioning factor in preventing injuries. This is the ability of your muscle-connective tissues to extend as far as needed without extremely compressing joints. Stretching all of you muscle groups for around seconds before and after workouts will definitely do you good. Focus your Flexibility training on your upper legs, back, shoulders, and hips. Your tendons and ligaments around your joints should be flexible but strong to avoid injuries so you must also pay extra attention to these areas. Cardiovascular (Aerobic) Endurance Is one's capability to keep active on a certain task for a considerably long time. Cardio workout should be done 3-5 times a week, minutes each session. You can develop Endurance through leisure activities like skating, swimming, and Bicycle Riding. The excellent form of this exercise is rollerblading or the use of roller skis, since you would use the same muscles and motions as you would in Skiing. Aerobic exercises and generally any activity which can make you generate about 120 heartbeats per minute for a number of minutes at a stretch can also develop Skiing stamina. Consult a fitness trainer in a local gym about the fitness program suitable to you and your needs. Aside from undergoing an exercise program, make sure to eat a well-balanced diet in order to get in shape for Skiing. These will not only make you ready for Skiing. Exercise and a balanced diet can likewise make you healthy and more mentally geared up in whatever endeavor you take. Ski Trails 9

11 Wildwood 2007 Aah - the traditions of summer - sun, sand and of course, the Flying Dutchmen in Wildwood. This year's event will be from September 28th to September 30th. (Arrangements can be made if you want to arrive earlier or stay later.) Once again we will be staying at the American Inn in North Wildwood. The hotel is ideally located on the beach just off the north end of the boardwalk. On Saturday, we will be continuing the tradition of the Third Annual Flying Dutchmen Volleyball Tournament. On Sunday, there will be a Sand Sculpture contest as well as our soon to be world famous brunch. The window decorating contest was also a huge success so we'll be doing that again. If this sounds like way to much energy for the beach, then just hang out on the boardwalk, beach or by the pool. Saturday night we will be having a Greek & Italian buffet followed by entertainment by The Usual Suspects. We will also have a Key West shot party and contest. You've got the summer to perfect your shot creation. We'll supply the serving tables and shooter tubes. You bring the fixings for your favorite shot. (Remember - presentation is _ the fun!) We'll vote have some fun prizes for the winner. The cost per person is $155 per person for a double, $140 per person for a triple, and $130 per person for a quad. (The price may go up by $5 once we finalize the dinner.) The incredibly cheap price includes: Lodging Friday night and Saturday night Breakfast Saturday Dinner on Saturday Brunch on Sunday Endless munchies Beer, Wine, Soda and Water all weekend As of the time I am writing this, we are starting a waiting list. A deposit of $50 per person gets you on the waiting list. Another option is for you to arrange your own rooming at another hotel and just pay for the food, beverage and entertainment part of the weekend. If you have not made a deposit then you do not have a reservation. Final payments will be due by September 1, Payments (made payable to FDSC) can be mailed to Stan Miller or Erick Confer at 66 Glenview Drive, Fleetwood, PA Give us a call at for more information. There will be no refunds for cancellations after September 6th, FDSC Trip Reservation Form (Please Print) Trip Name: Trip Cost: Name: Phone (H) ( ) Address Phone (W) ( ) City State Zip Address Room Type: Roommate:(s) Incase of emergency, notify: Relationship: Address Phone (H) ( ) City State Zip - Phone (W) ( ) Release and Indemnification Agreement (Please Read Carefully) I UNDERSTAND THAT: All prices listed are subject to change.
