Wishing you a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and Fun Filled 2019, which is our 60th year as a Club! I hope that you have already gotten out on the slopes to ski or ride. As I write this, New England is having one of their best starts in many years, and the same is true for some of the Western destinations. Fingers crossed that we finally have a real winter; one that doesn t include a rainy season in the middle, to spoil the fun. Looking for some snow sports related resolutions for this year? Here are some ideas that I ve suggested in the past. Expand your tool kit. Hook up with our Ski and Snowboard School to fine tune your skills. Get some coaching to break through to the next level. Expand your horizons. Check out a ski area that you ve not visited before. There is satisfaction in having the inside scoop about your favorite go-to mountain, but the less famous mountains have tremendous charm, and may be less crowded (and less expensive?) Expand your circle of friends. Signing up for a trip will give you the opportunity to meet and ski or ride with new folks. Make it a point to take some runs with someone beyond your inner circle of ski buddies. Expand your collection of toys. Try another discipline. Take a snowboard or telemark lesson, rent cross country gear, Expand your involvement. Most meetings are populated by a small percentage of our membership. Why not come out to the Evergreen and have some fun? Volunteer for a committee, join the hiking, biking, or happy hour groups. Make a suggestion for an activity or a meeting program. Expand the club. Spread the word. Invite your friends who may not know about our club to come out and play. Take our brochures to your workplace. Bring a friend to a meeting. Most of all, get outside and have some fun. See you on the slopes! Your membership entitles you to reduced lift tickets at many locations, 7 lessons at a VERY low price, fabulous trips and retail discounts. Spread the word about these benefits, help our club continue to grow and celebrate our 60th year in style! There are two major things on my mind this month. First, I hope you re out on the slopes, and taking advantage of our many opportunities to save money on lift tickets. You can buy Bear Creek, JFBB and Mt. Snow tickets on-line, and pick up your Blue Mt. tickets at Fehl s. Hitting the New England slopes? Check out the EPSC discount program. membership past president Second, elections for next year s officers will be on April 4th, with new officers taking over on June 1. Although this sounds like a long way off, we actually have to present a slate of officers at the February 7th meeting. All offices are technically open. Nominations can be made from the floor at the February 7th meeting as well. If you think you might be interested in any office, please talk to me. And here s a final thought on volunteering: Diane Nolfe Membership Director The Corporation for National Community Service found that people who volunteer have lower mortality rates and lower rates of depression than those who don t. Volunteering can also improve elasticity in the brains of people at risk of developing Alzheimer s. Don t butt heads over what your club is doing! Volunteering for a board position or committee will keep you active and healthy! Call or Paul Schwartz for information on how you can help! 4 trips Happy New Year 2019! The northeast is off to a great start for skiers and boarders with lots of snow from New York to Maine. Let s hope it continues to be a snowy winter; the resorts need a profitable season as much as we want great conditions. It s not too late to sign up for the Elk day trip as well as the Greek Peak and Jay Peak weekend trips. Pre-trip meetings are scheduled for January and February so stay in touch and plan to attend. Planning has begun for our 2020 ski trip destinations. Preliminary plans are for a mid-week trip to Mt. Tremblant, Canada, and Western trips to Taos and Jackson Hole. Paul Prutzman is organizing a European trip to Zermatt, Switzerland. We ll round out the ski trip season with a weekend at Burke Mt. in Vermont along with First Tracks and Elk Mt. High on our list for 2021 are Lake Tahoe, Big Sky, and Whitefish. Your responses on the Winter Sports Night survey has helped us plan for the future. Thanks! Our members have already been sharpening their skills at race camps and free skiing adventures across the country. USSA (United States Ski Association), Mid-Atlantic Masters Foy Cup Series, and NASTAR will be Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and every other Sunday afternoon. Our Open to ALL club members championship race will be the Tuesday after our lesson program ends, February 26th.
