Mark your calendars to meet us the 1st Thursday of every month unless otherwise posted here. Don t forget that every Friday the Dutchmen are celebrating somewhere. see inside for Happy Hour locations. June is a busy time of year for the club, even though snow riding may be temporarily shelved in favor of bikes, hikes, golf clubs & tennis racquets. There will be lots going on at our June meeting, so you won t want to miss it. 1. We ll be outside! Enjoy the outside bar and great food at the Evergreen. 2. We transition to the new board of directors, welcoming the new folks and thanking those retiring for their service. I ve mentioned both groups in last month s article, but it would be a great time to buy them a drink. 3. You can secure your spot on either or both of the Western Trips that night. Sign ups for Bachelor and Alyeska will be officially open. 4. The Bob Bubb Memorial Service Award and the President s Award will be given out. I want to say a few words about the Bob Bubb Award and it s significance. It was established in 1985, honoring Bob and his many years of tireless dedication to the club. It has annually been given to an individual who has been active in many facets of the FDSC, who has shown their dedication, initiative and leadership over a period of years, and who through their volunteer spirit has moved the Club forward. Come out to the meeting to congratulate this year s recipient. And while you are at the meeting, why not talk to a board member or committee member to see how you might be able help out. Get more involved, you ll be glad that you did. Remember to join us at Blue Marsh Lake s Get Outdoors Day on June 9 th stop by our table and say hello. Gather some friends and take advantage of all the other events that the club has..going on over the summer. See you out there! Dave Membership Meetings are now held at: the EVERGREEN COUNTRY CLUB at: 7:30 PM 415 Hartz Road, Fleetwood, PA Come early for food and drink! 2 2018 Board of Directors President David McFarland st. Vice President & Membership: Diane Nolfe nd Vice President & Programs: Marge Ehst Treasurer: Dennis Baldwin Past President: Paul Schwartz Secretary: Cherylene Shollenberger Skimeister: Bob Fox Trip Director: Bob Fehl Publicity Director: Frances Karycki Competition Director: Chris Berns Social Director: Suzanne Claypoole Website Address... Competition Chris Berns Greetings all. Winter s really gone! Been a wild weather year! Let s see, we had June all of February, February in April... Mixed up weather finally settling down to the more usual hot and humid. Don t know how many more summers I can survive East of the Rockies! I hope everyone s enjoying the off season and staying active. Club members are leading group hiking and biking outings weekly. Check FDSC website Bulletin Board for details. OK, hate to annoy most of you, but here are a few training tips that can benefit ALL skiers and boarders: First runners. Great for your aerobic fitness, not so much for your muscle strength in the much greater range of motion required for fast and steep skiing. Unless of course your running consists of sprinting up very steep hills (Over and over and over...). Try some anaerobic leg and ab work BEFORE your training. It s a great benefit before cycling and tennis too. If you have access to a gym think barbell squats and deadlifts. Irregardless of age. Get instruction from a QUALIFIED strength trainer. Most gyms do have one. And, stay off the leg machines! Your knees will be eternally grateful. At home, try Roman chairs with an exercise ball between the wall and your lower back. Hold until you start to cry, rest 2 minutes, repeat 2 more times. Go next to 15 body-weight squats for 3 sets. To easy? Try one legged if possible. Hold a chair for balance at first. Ab work: My favorite is active planks. Hold pushup start position and bring left knee up to chest and return, 5 reps, then right knee. Repeat until tears. Have a skateboard or two? Pushup start position with feet on board, or, with 2 boards, hands and feet on boards. Begin slowly rolling feet left and then right. Increase range of motion as tolerated. Work up to one minute sets. Eat, drink, and go run, ride, hike, or smack a ball, anything that makes you happy. Just enjoy the power you re building! As you re reading this, my daughter is attending the Mt. Hood Summer Ski Camps race program at Mt. Hood (the less), OR. I attended this camp for just one last year, and it is fantastic. Any age, intermediate or better, it beats the hell out of cutting grass and sweating your butt off in PA. See you in the start gate... Chris 2 Ski Trails

3 Membership Director Diane Nolfe Most of us like getting something new skis, a bike, friends, concert tickets, a puppy you get the idea. In terms of the FDSC year, June is a time of new beginnings. We induct new board members, start a new roster, begin our summer adventures and gather information about new destinations for the next ski season. This year we will also start to plan for a special birthday. The club is a going to be 60 years old in 2019! All of these events depend on the dedication and commitment of our members. As you read this publication, we currently have 567 members. 276 of these are family memberships, a new concept for the club this year. Those families include 92 children! Let s hope that we can continue to engage them for many more years. We also have a total of 98 new members. Next year, let s aim higher. Imagine if every member recruited one person to join our club. We would be back to a roster of over 1,000! Let s do it Dutchmen. Program Director Marge Ehst Friendly reminder - please don t forget about our annual car, truck, motorcycle night at our meeting in July. You will be able to vote for your favorite vehicle and the winner will receive a prize. Hope you can make the meeting as it will be lots of fun. Social Director Suzanne Claypoole It s June :^) Marge Diane Time to start doing some warm weather activities, like bike riding every Tuesday check the bulletin board for posted rides. We are trying something different this month for Happy hour on June 22 nd. It is going to be at the Colonial Fitness Center in Sinking Springs a Wallyball event Please see the add in this issue. We also have a train ride planned from Reading to Jim Thorpe on July 8 th and the cost is $32 per person. The trains leave at 9 am and returns at 4pm with some shopping and lunch in-between. Please contact Marcia Fells asap if you are interested, there may still be some tickets available. And don t forget about our River Float event which is going to be on July 21 st. Have fun & get social SAVE THE DATE! Summer s just beginning but if you want to be at the best end of summer event it s time to plan now! The dates are October 5-7. We have the entire American Inn right at the beach. The American Inn is located at the north end of the boardwalk making for easy access. Cape May and many other attractions are just a short drive away including some great wineries. The heated pool will also be open we always have great weather for Wildwood. More details to come but don t plan anything else for that weekend! Stan and Erick Suzanne Skimeister Bob Fox Greetings! June marks the unofficial beginning of the planning for next ski season! Many of us have already put deposits down on season passes of some sort for next year and might be thinking that s it until fall! Well some of those passes offer other activities all year long! Why not take advantage and check out the beauty of the mountains in a different season? You may discover a new place you want to ski or ride. If you come upon something exciting, send me a message or share it with others in the club. It would be great to hear how others use these passes! Bob 3 Ski Trails
