Please help me thank Dominque, Cherylene and Eric for the great work they have done, and for their commitment to the Club. While many of them are social (zip lining, baseball games, happy hours and so forth), don t forget to participate in activities that will keep you in shape for next winter Tuesday bike rides, golf and tennis, and our fall hikes. Your Board is working hard to provide a full slate of activities, and we hope you ll want to be part of that. While we re keeping ourselves in shape, let s not neglect our equipment. Are your skis still sitting in the garage collecting dust and rust? If you can, store them in a cool, dry place (attics aren t on that list!), give them a coat of wax (and cover the edges so they don t rust), and back off the springs on the bindings (I put a piece of tape on the ski with the DIN number written on it so that I can reset it in the fall). Even though snow is just a memory, we re almost ready to begin sign-ups for 2017 trips. Because of the high up-front costs, we ll start taking reservations for the Switzerland and Telluride trips at the June meeting. If that s not enough incentive to attend that meeting, we ll also be awarding the Bob Bubb and President s awards, and inducting our new Board. And we ll be moving outdoors for our summer meetings. Have a great summer and stay involved! The Engelberg, Switzerland trip and the Western Telluride trips will begin signups and deposits at the June 2nd meeting. Summer s just beginning but if you want to be at the best end of summer event it s time to plan now! The dates are October 7-9. We have the entire American Inn right at the beach. We ll have munchies out Friday evening as everyone arrives, Saturday breakfast as well as a great brunch on Sunday morning including made-to-order omelets and French Toast. Saturday dinner is included style is yet to be determined but it s always great! Dinner will be followed by a great party with your favorite music provided by Platinum Edge. The American Inn is located at the north end of the boardwalk making for easy access. Cape May and many other attractions are just a short drive away including some great wineries. The heated pool will also be open we always have great weather for Wildwood! All this for the great price of - $150 for a quad, $160 for a triple and $185 for a double. Stan and Erick 2 Ski Trails By Sheila Martin, AASI Snowboard Level 1 Receiving a forward from Paul from seniors at Twin Valley High School mid-march; their small-group engineering/technology class looking for input on a spring-term assignment, I replied that I was well-qualified in many respects to contribute to Project Lead The Way s Build- A-Better-Snowboard-Binding. The design team of four young collaborators forwarded binding sketches and component ideas, addressing the problem they cited of undoing/doing one s free foot while riding a chairlift using today s twinstrap ratchet bindings. Can tried-and-true be considered critically and improved or scrapped radically and reborn? I met for a talk-filled solid hour with Jacob, Sara, Dan and Sean one noontime at TVHS. They shared concept drawings, engineering ideas and performance thinking with me. I shared search topics like ASTM International (metals, plastics, even Kevlar), powdercoat industrial paints, specification wording, concise technical writing and logical arrangement, from catalog numbers to dimensional drawings all within the context of a fun sport we were all fluent in, and loved. My advice to them included proofreading all narratives, working on very-clear descriptive terminology, citing for expressing ideas and conveying understanding that, in addition to STEM courses, English should also be one of their top subjects! Their teacher said that the charrette was invaluable to the kids, realizing that there are folks out there who actually make a living conceiving, engineering and marketing products that touch every part of everyday life. My postscript to the session was asking, Early-on, did you research the HISTORY of undoing/doing strap/ratchet bindings? Yes, they found the 20-year-old K2 Clicker boot/step-in binding system online, and found it both hilarious and Oh well, back-to-thedrawing-board, hearing that THAT was my neverever-beginner set-up, and the many performance drawbacks which the riding public ultimately panned, and which rentals and retailers soon abandoned. Our annual Trip Night, for all trips to be showcased as well as continuing signups and deposits, will be held at the Evergreen Club s outdoor pavilion on Thursday night, August 4th, our general meeting night. 4 Lodge Craig Leister Time to think about the Spring Workers weekend at the Lodge. Friday, May 13 thru Sunday, May 15. Come help for the weekend, a day, or just a few hours. There s food, laughs and beer. Please tell any director or let me know as soon as you can; we d like to have members. So far we have 4... Also, we need to finish the painting of the deck. It would be best to do this separately from the Workers Weekend. The date will be based on availability of members there s only about a day s worth of work for 2 3 people. so please let me know if you d like to join in the fun. Last month we reviewed the survey responses received so far as of the meeting, there were 98. To date there are 108. If you haven t completed the survey, please do so by going to and clicking on the survey link on the home page. One point that stands out in the survey is that 45% (49 members) of those that responded (108 members) expressed interest in the club having a Lodge in New England. While a few members have expressed this interest prior to the survey, this initial response is more than expected and presents a major consideration that requires further discussion, investigation and input from members. We are discussing plans for a Lodge Steering Committee including members and directors to address not only this, but all Lodge issues. More to come on this as we work out the details. Upcoming repairs to the chimney at the Lodge are instore for early summer. If you work with cement and stucco, please let me know if you d be interested in this project. There re plenty of openings at the Lodge now that winter has ended. As of this writing, the first and last weekends of May are still open as is most of June through the end of the summer. Craig Social Director Diane Nolfe If you are ready for a summer adventure, join us on Saturday, June 11 at 10:00AM at Camelback Mountain. Price per person $ fly from the summit of Camelback Mountain back to its base on the longest Zip-Flyers in North America! In preparation for your zip line adventure, you ll be transported to the summit of Camelback Mountain. There the experienced guides will help you get seated and secure in your chair and prop your feet on a metal door, the only barrier between you and adventure. The door suddenly opens, and you let out your first scream! Gravity takes over, and as you fly down the mountain, you ll quickly reach speeds up to 60 mph. The 4,000 foot long zip line cable is suspended over the steep slopes of Camelback Mountain and the waterslides of Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark. Enjoy the view, and wave at friends watching from far below as you experience a rushing race you ll never forget.
