1 March 2016 Calendar of Events Mar 3 Mar 17 April 7 May 20 General Meeting General Meeting 2 nd FDSC Lodge Discussion General Meeting Share Trip Photos Board Elections Game Night Fightin Phils Happy Hour Ballgame and buffet **Don t forget that every Friday the Dutchmen are celebrating somewhere. see inside for Happy Hour locations. Voucher Refund Policy You can return your vouchers via mail or in person. We charge $1.00 per voucher for each voucher returned. Please mail or return your vouchers to the same salesperson from whom you purchased them, and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that we can mail your refund to you. The deadline for all returns is Monday, March 21, Winter s winding down (it seems like it never really took hold!), and we finish the season with two more trips Vail and Okemo. There s still a lot of skiing or riding to do, although it may require a bit of driving. Don t forget about discount lift tickets for New York and New England areas through EPSC! Elections are always our first meeting in April. Although ALL Board positions are open, three of our current officers are willing to serve another term. If anyone is interested in ANY board position please nominate that person now! Trips, Publicity and Competition Director positions are looking for candidates. Here are their job descriptions: The Trip Director shall be responsible for all Club sponsored skiing trips. The Trip Director shall submit to the Club Treasurer a detailed financial accounting for each individual Club Trip under the Trip Directors jurisdiction on a form prescribed by the Board of Directors within two weeks of the event. The Publicity Director shall be responsible for all activities related to the publication of the monthly newsletter. The Publicity Director shall publicize the Club consistent with furthering its objectives. The Competition Director shall be responsible for all Club sponsored ski racing and related activities and shall maintain accurate and current records related to these activities Final nominations will have been taken from the floor at the February 18 th meeting so that the slate of candidates can be listed in this issue of Ski Trails. However, if you are interested in one of these positions, make that known to the Board. In the event that we do not have a candidate for a position, the Board will appoint a member, and if you re willing to serve, we welcome your participation. On a related note, please check your membership card. If it does not show BAS, STD or ADV, you are not (as far as our records are concerned) a voting member. To pass the Basic test, you have to be familiar with the Skier s Responsibility Code, be able to turn and stop on skis or snowboard, and be able to ride a lift. Any of our instructors can sign off on your abilities just ask! If you passed one of the level exams and then weren t a member for a year, we may have lost track of your certification. The reason for this requirement was to make sure that the Club would be run by members who skied (snowboards hadn t been invented yet), and not become just a social club. We ve proven over the years that both can coexist nicely! See you on the slopes! President Paul Schwartz Check for updates Paul THE DEADLINE FOR THE APRIL ISSUE OF SKI TRAILS IS TUESDAY MARCH 15, 2016

4 March 17 - second FDSC lodge discussion. Please mark your calendars and come prepared with questions for Craig concerning the lodge. April 7 - Bring your computers with your ski trip(s) pictures to share before the meeting and after the meeting. Elections will be held this night and after the meeting and elections, Patti Spitler will once again entertain us with one of her fun games. Let me know if you would like to participate. Will be lots of fun, guaranteed. 4 Enjoy skiing!!! I know I am! Ski Trails Lodge Craig Leister Summer rates start on March 20th. The cost to rent the entire lodge for a weekend drops to $325. Spring/summer booking has already begun, but there are plenty of great dates available. This year s newest attraction is the waterpark at Kalahari Resort, located in Pocono Manor. Have fun in this 100,000 square foot indoor park with its retractable roof no matter what the weather s doing outside. Bodyboard or stand up surf on the FlowRider, experience the Anaconda water roller coaster and thrill to the high-energy oscillations of the Swahili Swirl. There s something for all ages. This park is open to walk-ins, but calling in advance is advised. Camelback also has Aquatopia to offer, along with Arcadia, featuring video games, a ropes course, mini golf and laser tag. Want outdoor fun? Try Big Pocono State Park in Tannersville for hiking, biking, horseback riding or just a good ole picnic. For real close fun, we will again have swimming and fishing access available on Lake Naomi. It s only $30 for your entire group to use the beaches and adjacent fishing for the whole week. The online Lodge Survey should be available by the time you get this. A Constant Contact will be sent to inform you when it s ready. Instructions and where to access will be posted on the FDSC website. Just a reminder to all lodge renters How well the place looks to the next guests is in your hands! A little extra time making the showers and the oven shine goes a long way, and please double check that no food is left behind. Thanks for your help! Craig Program Director Marge Ehst Membership Al Stalnecker Marge At the February 4th meeting, I reported that our membership total was down by 40 members from last year. Ideally, every organization would like to see their numbers grow. But it s not just quantity the counts; it is also quality. The Flying Dutchmen Ski Club has a lot to offer. If you have not joined or rejoined, you are missing out on a lot of benefits. During the ski season, we offer fantastic trips, ski vouchers, lessons, racing, and the opportunity to ski with friends. The Dutchmen activities are not limited to ski season. Off season, we continue with meetings, programs, hiking, biking, river floats, golf tournaments, Happy Hours just to name a few. So winter, spring, summer or fall, the Flying Dutchmen have it all. If you did not rejoin this year or join as a new member, make it a priority for next year. Make sure that you become part of a club that does it all. Al Trippin Cherylene Shollenberger Hello fellow travelers/skiers and boarders! Another fabulous month has gone by where we saw our members travel to Elk, Hunter/Windham, the Powder Highway of British Columbia, and Smugglers Notch. Thank you to our leaders who saw that all of these trips provided great times - even more snow- for our members! The Dutchmen are, by far, the best travelers around, who know how to go with the flow and provide lots of fun for all, a great way to meet new people in the Club. This month we are off to Vail and then Okemo, where a few spots may still remain. Please contact leaders Craig Leister or Brian Gallagher, just in case of openings for Okemo. I am very happy that our 2016 season has been, once again, very successful, because of you - our leaders and members. My heartfelt thanks, as I prepare to leave this position of Trip Director. Thank you for all of your support over the years. Before my departure from the Board, I also wish to thank my Trip Planning Committee and all of you for the suggested destinations in the past six seasons. With that, I am very happy to announce our 2017 Trip Log. It is subject to slight changes, of course, at this early date, and with the election of my successor. Please plan ahead, and signups for the western and European destinations will start at the June meeting! This allows us better choice in lodging and for our members to have more time to make payments on the higher priced trips. Here they are: 1) First Tracks - Jan destination and trip leaders needed 2) Elk Day Trip - Jan trip leaders to be confirmed 3) EPSC Lake Placid, NY - Jan Dory Peterson and Bob Smith 4) Engelberg, Switzerland - Feb Stan Miller and Erick Confer 5) Sugarloaf, ME - Feb Bob Zoppel and Kurt Fehl 6) Telluride, CO - Mar Al and Sue Stalnecker 7) Family Trip - Mar destination and trip leaders needed I hope you are as excited as I am for these future trips. I will hold a Trip Leaders meeting on Wed., March 17th, at 6 p.m., before our General Meeting. I am happy to provide training and assistance in running a trip if you have never been a trip leader before. Some trip leaders are still needed (see above). Enjoy the rest of this ski season and also the advent of springtime! Hope to see you on the slopes or at our next meetings. Happy Easter/Passover as well! Social Director Diane Nolfe Cherylene I (literally) just got home from a trip of a lifetime to the Powder Highway in British Columbia. If you ever get the opportunity to go, don t miss it! Right now, it s snowing in PA which may mean will have a good spring season. Let s hope so but if not, get your bike out and get ready for Tuesday night trail rides. They will be listed on our bulletin board and FB page. Speaking of Tuesdays, we had an excellent snow sports clinic program at Bear Creek this year. One of the events was our Carving out Cancer bake sale. At this time, I d like to thank the dedicated volunteers who made it happen. Maddie Dondore, Bob and Marcia Fehl, Cherylene and Barry Shollenberger, Dorothy Meyer and Erma Miller baked, worked the stand, packaged/sold goods and cleaned up. As a result, we earned $135 for Team Hope. In addition, we received a $100 donation from Frederic Patton of Phoenix Sports Technology which we will send to Relay for Life of Berks County. A big thank you to the crew! We are fortunate to belong to a club with so many fantastic members. If you want to maximize your FDSC experience-get involved NOW! You won t regret it. Diane

5 Big Sky Highlights! We already knew that Big Sky was the biggest skiing in America! For most of the 52 Dutchmen, this area was on their bucket list to visit. We are fairly certain that no one was disappointed. Lost count on how much snow we received during the week...around 24 inches. It was either sunny or snowing. And it s true no lift lines! The Huntley was the perfect slope side accommodations a few minutes walk to the main lifts, boot warming room and ski valet. Since this trip was also the EPSC Winter Carnival, the main events were all located within the hotel. The breakfasts were legendary.especially with a beautiful view of the mountain. The kitchen staff even prepared boxed breakfasts for the groups going to Yellowstone and on our departure day. This year there were (9) clubs participating in the EPSC Winter Carnival trip a total of 314 members. Always lots of parties Welcome Party, Themed Banquet and Farewell with Awards Party. We had many members get in the spirit of the Getting High in Big Sky (referring to the altitude) 60 s themed banquet. Lots of tie-dyed shirts and headbands. For the race we had 5 teams. There was a computer issue and all the scores were lost from the first and second runs. Everyone ran one more and FDSC brought home Gold and Silver! Congratulations! Second place: Michelle Himmelberger, Karin Wheelin, Rick Huesman, Kurt Fehl, Thurman Kremser and Dave Harley. First place: Ali Cramer, Phyl Geist, Bob Smith, Paul Prutzman, Ron Goodman and Tom Groff. Fastest man and women on the hill Bob Smith and Ali Cramer. Thank you to Paul Prutzman for organizing and everyone who participated. The village has a few shops and restaurants enough for variety. FDSC had some lively happy hours with lots of different crafted beers. Some took advantage of seeing the sights in Yellowstone (coyotes, bobcats, bison and of course, Old Faithful) others were cross country skiing at the Lone Mountain Ranch, zip-lining, snow cat ride to dinner in a yurt and snowshoeing. If you haven t heard, we got an extended vacation due to the snow in the east. United cancelled all their flights. Most of the other clubs headed to United s hub cities and waited for available flights. Most travelers didn t get back until Tuesday. Those on Delta were a little luckier. Because our flight was a once a week direct, we were stranded at Big Sky. We drowned our sorrows with more skiing, happy hours and the other snow activities. Tuesday was a really, really long travel day. We were grateful that Kurt & Ashley Fehl, Thurman Kremser and Phyl Geist had cleared our cars out. That s a Big Sky size THANK YOU! Also, thank you to the most amazing Dutchmen! Everyone was a lot of fun and very supportive to the trip leaders as we worked out all the details. We need to go back and get the Yeti dogs! NYC BUS TRIP SUNDAY, APRIL 24th 7 a.m. Departure, Reading location Free time in the Big Apple- $40 per person Checks payable to FDSC to Dorothy Meyer by March 31st, or trip may be canceled. Open to members and friends, 35 people minimum The Midweek Madness trip did not disappoint thirty - two Dutchmen with wonderful lodging, cuisine, skiing and après ski in the Hunter region of the Catskills. Watch for a repeat of this event in years to come. Ski Trails 5

6 Powder Highway Trip! Kevin and Suzanne Claypoole organized an incredible ski adventure for the 40+ travelers lucky enough to be a part of it. The first three days were spent at Red Mountain Ski Resort which is renowned for its steep and gnarly terrain. This mountain is actually three mountains, with each offering 360º of skiing and views. The Dutchmen enjoyed sunshine, high temps and spring-like skiing on top of a 300 base. Those of us who ventured into the glades and steeps found ourselves challenged and exhilarated by the variety and depth of terrain at Red. On Sunday night, we enjoyed Kevin and Suzanne Super Bowl Party. On Monday, about 14 of us ventured to the BlackJack Nordic Center and cross-country skied a few miles to a candle-lit delicious fondue dinner, followed by the moonlit return trek home. The rest of the week, we raided the local watering holes for night caps and late night snacks, and found that the town s shuttle drivers were particularly helpful and offered outstanding customer service to tourists with questions. On Tuesday, many of us traveled to Whitewater Resort near the city of Nelson. While this mountain has only 3 lifts, they service an abundance of natural terrain featuring more steeps, deeps, chutes, bowls and glades than most backcountry scenes at other mountains. Best of all, there were absolutely no crowds only a small number of locals who hucked off everything in sight and made it look like child s play. When the locals look like Warren Miller Pros, you know you re at a legendary mountain that boasts not only talented skiers, but offers gourmet food to feed them at cafeteria prices. What?! Those who opted out of Whitewater had a relaxing spa day in Nelson to prepare for our final days at Kimberly Mountain. Although Kimberley looked like the tamest of the three on the trail map, skiing its terrain is a whole other story. The Black Forest area was an expert skier s paradise while the gentler North Star Mountain offered a 4 mile long intermediate trail with stunning views of the British Canadian landscape. Kimberley also offered night skiing, and the Vortex of Stupidity enjoyed that. There was also a free ice skating pond where curling seemed to be a popular activity especially for small spidery superheroes in purple briefs prone to practicing parkour in indoor places with an apple. And you know what? There would be a lot more photos, but most of us were so busy skiing, laughing and having fun that we didn t really take that many pictures. If that s not proof of a memorable vacation, I don t know what is. BC rules.
