1 January 2018 Calendar of Events Jan 4 General Meeting Jan 18 General Meeting / Buckmans President Dave McFarland New Year s Resolutions. Check for updates The season is off to a great start! As I write this, I m looking out at the first substantial snowfall, and trying not to think about the XC Skis waiting patiently in the garage for me to head to the park. Nine of the next ten days are forecast to offer snowmaking possibilities for local areas, so the Pray for Snow parties seem to have done good work. I ve been thinking a lot lately about what I love about this club, and what each one of us can do to make our experience as Dutchmen even more memorable. Here are my ideas, what about yours? Expand your tool kit. Hook up with our Ski and Snowboard School to fine tune your skills and get some coaching to break through to the next level. REMINDER: We are now back to two meetings per month! Mark your calendars to meet us the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month unless otherwise posted here. Expand your horizons. Check out a ski area that you ve not visited before. There is satisfaction in having the inside scoop about your favorite go-to mountain, but you ll be amazed at how cool some of the less famous mountains can be. Expand your circle of friends. Signing up for a trip will give you the opportunity to meet and ski or ride with new folks. Make it a point to take some runs with someone beyond your inner circle of ski buddies. FDSC Stickers are still available, they are $1 for the small and $2 for the large. Available from the Skimeister at meetings or at skimeister@fdsc.org Expand your toybox. I ve mentioned this in the past, but try another discipline. Grab a board lesson, check out XC gear, tele-skis anyone? Expand your involvement. Most meetings are populated by a small percentage of our membership. Why not come out to the Evergreen and have some fun? Volunteer for a committee, join the hiking, biking, or happy hour groups. Make a suggestion for an activity or a meeting program. Don t forget that every Friday the Dutchmen are celebrating somewhere. see inside for Happy Hour locations. Expand the club. Spread the word. Invite your friends who may not know about our club to come out and play. People are responding to our membership drive and family membership options. Take our brochures to your workplace. Bring someone new to a meeting. Wishing everyone a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and Fun Filled Head to the mountains! We ll see you on the slopes. Dave Membership Meetings are now held at: the EVERGREEN COUNTRY CLUB at: 7:30 PM 415 Hartz Road, Fleetwood, PA Come early for food and drink! KITCHEN HOURS Friday 5:30-9:00 PM Saturday 5:30-8:00 PM Sunday 3:00-7:00 PM 2nd & 4th Sundays Brunch 10 AM-2 PM Alternate Sundays Lite Fare at the Bar THE DEADLINE FOR THE FEBRUARY ISSUE OF SKI TRAILS IS MONDAY JANUARY 15, 2018

Vice President & Membership: Diane Nolfe nd Vice President & Programs: Marge Ehst Treasurer: Paul Kreuzberger Past President: Paul Schwartz Secretary: Phyllis Hoffman Skimeister: Bob Fox Trip Director: Kevin Claypoole Publicity Director: Frances Karycki Lodge Director: Craig Leister Competition Director: Chris Berns Social Director: Suzanne Claypool Website Address Ski Trails 2017 Board of Directors Past President Paul Schwartz Elections for next year s officers will be on April 5 th, with new officers taking over on June 1. Although this sounds like a long way off, we actually have to present a slate of officers at the February 1 meeting. All offices are technically open, but the offices of Treasurer, Trips Director and Secretary will be vacant (the rest of the Board has agreed to continue serving). We have candidates for Treasurer and Trips, but are looking for a candidate for Secretary. Nominations can be made from the floor at the February 1 meeting as well. If you think you might be interested in any office, please talk to me. A quick word on lift tickets: for Bear Creek, we will NOT be selling vouchers this season. You can buy a Club Day all-day lift ticket Monday Thursday for $25 when you present your membership card at the ticket window. If you purchase a 6-session pass or season pass, AND are enrolled in the lesson program (or have a child in the BC Youth lesson program), we will rebate you $25 (up to $50/ family). For JFBB passes, call or text me for an on-line login and purchase tickets directly from their website. We will have Blue Mt. tickets available at meetings, and at Fehl s Home & Garden. Check the web page for current pricing. NASTAR Paul 2018 Regional Competition Schedule Jan. to March: Bear Creek; T, W, 6:45-8:45; Sun. 1:30-3:30. March 21-25: National Championships; Squaw Valley, CA. Club Races Competition Chris Berns Jan. 28: Troeg s Cup Race (Lancaster SC); Roundtop Mt. Feb. 20: FDSC Championship Race; Bear Creek. Late Feb: EPSC Cup Team Championship; Montage Mt. Mid-Atlantic Masters (Foy Cup Series) Jan. 6, 7: Elk Mt. (GS, SL) Feb. 3, 4: Montage Mt. (GS, SL) Feb. 24, 25: Mountain Creek, NJ (GS, SL) March 9-11: Foy Cup Finals; West Mt, NY (SG, GS, SL) I definitely want to throw a lot of racers at the Troeg s Cup race at Roundtop. Ditto for EPSC Cup race. Please try to get out for these events, as well as our own club championship race. If you can easily handle intermidiate terrain, then you can handle these races. IT S FUN. As for MAM/Foy Cup, it will be great to have a team to compete in the GS s at Elk and Montage, minimum. We certainly have enough fast skiers. You must be a USSA member as well as having the MAM membership. MAMasters.org for details. Any questions or suggestions, please contact me at cberns@rocketmail. com or See you in the start gate. 3 Hey Skiers, Boarders and Partiers! HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018! Have a great and safe ski season!!! The First Tracks trip to Killington is taking off Jan. 5-7! Please make sure to arrive to First Energy stadium, third base side, in plenty of time, to load and depart on schedule. New Hampshire Midweek Trip is 15th-19th. Please don t forget our day trip to Elk Jan. 21st. The EPSC Winter Carnival trip to Breckenridge is Jan. 27-Feb.3rd which will be great fun! Okemo Family Trip and Stowe still have openings! Snow dances day and night are a great way to keep your ski legs in shape and bring plenty of snow! Pre-trip meetings are starting to be scheduled, so please try to attend this month s general meetings early to get your latest information from your leaders. Notify your trip leader if you cannot make trip meetings for a trip you re attending. They will make arrangements with you for itinerary etc. The Trip Committee will be meeting soon and planning the destinations for the 2019 season. If you have any interest in helping on or planning a trip, please contact me. Please let me know if you would like to lead a trip or have suggestions for the coming years of travel. As always, I will hold a meeting with our 2019 Trip Leaders in late March to firm up all 2019 trips. I m hoping to announce these trips by May or June. Please mark your calendars! Remember to sign up for The Fightin Phils Happy Hour/ Picnic! This is one way to show our appreciation for the parking we are allowed during our FDSC trips in their parking lot. Many of us enjoyed this outing last year. I hope you are considering joining the fun! Trippin Kevin Claypoole Ski you on the slopes! Kevin Greetings! Skimeister Bob Fox By the time you read this I hope you all have solid plans to get out and enjoy some snow sliding or have had a chance to get your first turns of the season! We have the Tuesday Lesson program starting and First Tracks coming up, both to help you get more proficient on the mountain. In addition to these formal programs, there are many impromptu trips with your Flying Dutchmen members so talk with others, watch your social media feed or invite others to join you! Make a commitment to get out more days than last year and remember practice makes perfect! See you on the mountain! Bob Social Director Suzanne Claypoole Here are the results of the Social Activities Survey: 33 people participated The winner will be announced at the Christmas Party. You may have noticed that I forgot to include the River Float among the choices but don t worry it s alive and well (as long as we have interest and a great support staff to run it). I will be contacting some individuals who said they would like help with an activity sometime soon. Watch the website and Facebook for some new events to be scheduled in Suzanne Program Director Marge Ehst. Happy New Year! If Santa didn t bring you everything you need for skiing, snowboarding, etc, don t forget Buckmans will be here at our second meeting in January. Think SNOW!! Marge Ski Trails 3

4 Lodge Craig Leister Membership Director Diane Nolfe THE FDSC LODGE HAS BEEN SOLD! As of this writing we have an agreement of sale, and expect closing on or before December 18, It was on the market for six months; subsequently, the final sales price was $127,500. We sold the Lodge as is, which included furnishings and supplies. FDSC memorabilia has been removed. A new committee is being formed to determine how to put the proceeds to use to benefit all our members and promote the sport of skiing. More info on the committee will be forthcoming, but anyone interested in participating should contact Dave McFarland. SO No more corny jokes begging for rental, no more subsidizing, no more Workers Weekends, but we do say farewell to a long time friend and part of our club. It s been a fun 3 years and I thank you all for having me serve as Lodge Director. Happy New Year!! Craig If you attended the last ski club meeting, you already know that everyone was having a good time. The members in the audience typically include about 10 to 15% of our total membership. On this particular evening, they were enjoying the banter of the board while the president was cracking jokes. It helps that the beverages were flowing at the Evergreen. In fact, many Dutchmen come early to enjoy dinner and drinks before the meeting. Brian and Cindy, who are also ski club members, do a great job running the club. The outstanding bartenders, waitstaff and kitchen crew work hard to keep the crowd smiling! All of this certainly sets a good tone, but the real energy comes from the members themselves. Our normal practice is to introduce new members to the club at our general meetings, which was the case on Thursday. Afterwards, one of them posted a sincere thank you message on our Facebook page. She told the group how welcomed she had felt at the meeting. Several people responded with positive comments, which further illustrated the friendly and inclusive nature of the Dutchmen. Newcomers quickly find friends to ski with, hike and bike with and spend happy hours with. It is something we should be proud of. It s you, who make it happen. Diane 4 Ski Trails
