President Rick Auchenbach Hello Skiers, We're officially into our 50th year! That says a lot about the FDSC and its members. While major financial institutions have fallen on hard times and car manufacturers need to be bailed out, the Ski Club continues to prosper. More events and activities are scheduled for this year than we have seen in recent years. We hope you are participating and volunteering. Please see the 50th Anniversary page and other articles in this issue for more information about how you can share in the festivities. Since we're in the middle of winter, our club's main activities--skiing and snowboarding--are reaching their peak for our 50th year. The Tuesday evening Lesson Program, under the direction of Skimeister Marianne van der Velde and Ski School Director Dave McFarland, is having another successful season. This is the core function of the FDSC- -teaching snowboarding and skiing. Emphasis is on safety and fun, but it goes way beyond that. Our own certified instructors are taking their students to the next skill level and beyond in a friendly, encouraging learning environment. If you're not in the Lesson Program, ask someone who is about their experiences. I'm sure you'll hear about great results. Have you ever thought about becoming more active in the club? Several Board of Directors positions are being vacated this year. In fact, all board positions are available because these are elected positions. Recently it has been more difficult to fill board positions, but when I first joined the Ski Club, board positions were highly contested. The campaign and election process was interesting and fun, with two people running for most positions. If you're interested in running for the FDSC Board of Directors, please contact a board member or a member of the Nominating Committee, Dave Coffey, Maddie Dondore, Dave McFarland, or Sue McMullen. As a board member you'll have fun and give back to your club. We would love to have you onboard. Think snow, 2009 Rick DON T MISS ANYTHING! Get out there and carve 'em up. You shouldn't have cabin fever already. The Dutchmen club race will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd. The race will be held on the NASTAR course. You will only get two runs, which count as a combined time. This will also count as a NASTAR race. Winners will receive two separate medals. Don't forget to sign up for the couples race to get your name on that trophy. Early registration is highly recommended. You may register early at the meetings or lesson night. The race is free, courtesy of the race team. We need racers, first timers, and anyone in between for the EPSC council cup race. This will be held on Sunday, February 22nd, at Blue Mountain. Race start is 10:30am, but I need you there before 8:00am to make up the teams. The cost is $50, which includes the race, breakfast, lunch, beverages (beer), and awards. I need everyone I can get to make up as many teams as possible. Please let me know if you will attend. See you on the slopes, Jim Hello fellow Dutchmen! Our membership numbers are increasing weekly. So far we're at 857, with 133 new members--a bit behind last year's totals, but we're catching up quickly thanks to all your referrals and some late renewals. The list of new members in this issue is quite impressive. Please take some time to welcome our new members and help acquaint them with the club when you see them at meetings and lessons or on trips. Updated rosters will be available starting with the first meeting in February. Please remember that these rosters are provided for the benefit of our members and are not to be used for solicitation purposes. See you on the slopes! Everything and everyone came together for some great conditions, great skiing, great teaching, and as ever, great partying. What more could we have asked for? Thanks again to all! 5 QUEBEC CITY Bon Annee! Happy New Year as they say in lovely Quebec City. There were 42 Dutchmen and friends who traveled to Quebec City to ring in 2009 and enjoy sunny blue skis for skiing. As they say in Arizona, it is a dry heat so you do not mind the heat--one could say in Quebec it is a dry cold so one will not mind the cold temperatures that ranged from -9 to 12. The cold weather did not stop the skiers from enjoying their time on the slopes at Mont Sainte-Anne, Stoneham, and Le Massif. What the cold did stop was the bus on the first morning by freezing the brake system. John, the bus driver, took it in stride and made the trip and the drives as pleasant as possible. But, good things come to those who wait! In addition to the skiing, everyone enjoyed lovely Old City Quebec, which was within walking distance of the hotel. Some chose to do a walking tour, roll snow taffy, shop, stroll through the charming streets, warm up in the lovely Chateau Frontenac Hotel, while others braved the toboggan ride right in the old city! For New Year's Eve the entire group dined at Bonaparte on a delicious five-course meal with traditional French delicacies. After dinner, some braved the zero degree temperatures and bundled up to enjoy with 30,000 others the culminating 400 year anniversary celebration with fire works being launched from 3 locations throughout the city and a surprise fourth spot! People who did not want to brave the cold enjoyed the display from the warmth of their hotel rooms. Some special highlights include: * The biggest bag of popcorn ever - that was not so big by the end of the trip! * Enjoying quiet time on the morning bus rides just like at camp! * A pretty girl losing her pants at Mount St Anne. * Sacrificing one of our own in marriage to receive $10 food vouchers to be used at Stoneham Resort! * The great bus bake off--in which everyone could enjoy the last of the Christmas cookies. * Three brave souls stripping down to their skivvies to use the hot tub at the mountain during happy hour. * A huge thank you to Cherylene our resident French teacher and Quebec City information person! * Singing songs from Mamma Mia all trip long! * Scuba diving lessons with Claude! * Having a heat wave at 12 degrees! * An exchange rate in our favor! * Having a celebrity on the trip--hugh Heffner and his Bunnies! * Playing Lotto (bingo) on the bus and choosing prizes from Prize Boy. * Learning that the statue of Champlain in downtown Quebec City has the face of a criminal and not Champlain himself! * A beautiful buffet dinner on the last night in the revolving L'Astral Restaurant of the hotel, which allowed breathtaking views of the entire city! Thank you to everyone who joined us in Quebec City! Merci, Stacy and Suzanne (special thanks to Kevin and Bernie for their help that went above and beyond!) Ski Trails 5
