1 Having Fun Since 1959! March 2009 Calendar of Events March 5 - General Meeting Punta Cana Presentation March 19 - Trip Leader Meeting 6:30 General Meeting Service Auction April 2 - General Meeting Spring Fashion Show Special Time and Location! See you at 7pm at the Reading Country Club! April 26 - Spring Carnival Cacoosing Meadow Park Spring Township May Golf Weekend May 7 - General Meeting Dutchmen Got Talent Membership Meetings begin at 8PM at the READING LIEDERKRANZ 143 Spook Lane Reading, PA THE Deadline for the April issue of Ski Trails is March 8th. President Rick Auchenbach Bob Smith has always told me, "Ski season starts March 1st." I've only been on one trip this season, but there's always March skiing to help round out the season. As of this writing I haven't even skied "off-creek," but the Mystery Trip will end that drought. I hope you've had the opportunity to visit your favorite ski areas. As the season winds down, keep alert for news of pond skimming events. Mother Nature usually sets the date. Let's fast forward to April for a moment. The April meeting (we only have one meeting per month from April through August) will be held Thursday, April 2nd, at the Reading Country Club. The venue change is due to the FDSC 50th Anniversary Spring Fashion Show. We will begin with the business meeting and election of officers at 7:00, followed by the Fashion Show about 8:00. There will be hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar, along with an array of sports specific fashions. Music for dancing will follow the Fashion Show. Please plan to attend and support your club. Spring Carnival is scheduled for Sunday, April 26th, at Cacoosing Meadow Park in Spring Township. Please see Patti's article for additional information about this event--and don't forget to check the 50th Anniversary page for information on all of the fun-filled anniversary events coming soon. As a final note, I would like to reflect on the passing of Henry. Henry "Trust me" Drasher was one of the most unique individuals I have ever met. It became apparent the first time I met him, and if you knew him I'm sure you feel the same way. Henry was his own person, with a passion for skiing, sailing, Harleys, and fun. As an instructor and Ski School Director, he donated endless hours to teaching people to ski while having fun. That's how Henry lived his life. Thank you, Henry. We miss you. Ski it before the season ends, Rick CHECK OUT THESE UPCOMING EVENTS March 5 - Debbie Pasquale will do a presentation of Punta Cana and an overview of what the resort has to offer. Well, the Dutchmen are here to help. We are holding a Charity Service Auction on Thursday, March 19th, after the general meeting. Please bring your checkbooks or cash... and "buy" one of our many services offered. We'll have wings, cakes, French lessons, a painting, cleaning, outdoor clean ups, auto detailing, Bourbon tasting party, yoga classes, "goody" baskets from area merchants (including our local Ski Shops), and more. All proceeds will be donated to The American Cancer Society in The Dutchmen name. Come out and bid your way to the prize of your choice. See you there... Sunday, April 26th, is also a date you must remember. This will be our Winter (now changed to Spring) Carnival date. We will be holding this event at The Cacoosing Meadows Park in Spring Township. The day will be planned out similar to past Winter Carnivals, with games for the kids, games for the adults, some with competition, others just for the fun. Plus the Medals will be awarded from the Race Team's Club Race, which was a HUGE success held on Tuesday night, Feb 3rd. The theme for this year's event is "The Old with the New." We'll bring back some traditions of years past and to that, we'll add the newer ones. Hope you'll all make it a great event. Cost will be $15.00 / ticket (ages 12 and up), $10.00 for those little ones under 12. I have a team together and we'll be selling tickets at the March general meetings. In one tradition, since I have been social director, I have always come up with some kind of "song" for Winter Carnival. You never know when I'll perform it, so come out to all meetings in March... Miss one and you might miss ME? Keep on Talking... Patti 2 Ski Trails

3 Trippin Kevin Claypoole Hey Skiers and Boarders, The season is going well. Big Sky, Elk Mountain, and the Mystery Trip have been completed, but we still have trips to Utah and Okemo coming up. I'm sure there are some great stories and pictures! We got 2nd place racing at Killington for the EPSC Winter Carnival, with our own Sue McMullen coming in as The Fastest Woman on the Mountain! Congratulations, Sue! If you're out there enjoying all of these great chances to ski, do remember to Thank your trip leaders for their hard work. Believe it or not, we have to start thinking about 2010 Trips. I'll be having a meeting Thursday, March 19th, at the Leiderkranz at 6:30pm. Come with your ideas for next season. We always need Volunteers. See Ya on The Slopes, Kevin New Hampshire Trip Report Jan , 2009 From snow to skiing to food to drink to Angels to moose, the New Hampshire Trip was loads of fun. The snowy drive to NH paid off in 10 of fluffy white stuff to push around at Bretton Woods. Skiing conditions in New Hampshire were the best they've been in 5 years. We did have one member of our group who didn't get to enjoy even one run. After denying any knowledge of knowing us, she took a ride down the mountain in a Ski Patrol sled due to a dislocated shoulder. Loon and Waterville Valley had equally enjoyable ski conditions in the form of great groomed runs and chilly January temperatures (-4 on Wed.). Pre and Aprés skiing found everyone gorging themselves on outstanding omelets, microbrewery beer, mimosas, wine, stuffed shrimp, steak, cheesecake, brownies, rice krispie treats, etc. etc. etc. A question was raised whether a "Weight Watchers" membership was included in the trip price! The Hot Tub group seemed to prefer the outdoor tub--they even had a waiter making beer runs. A brave few took advantage of the large amounts of snow to perfect their snow Angel techniques. As for the "Moose" thing, I enlisted everyone to help me spot a moose, because NH is supposed to have lots of moose. I saw lots of moose crossing signs, moose hats, moose shirts, stuffed moose, a dancing moose, and moose boxer shorts but no live moose. All in all it was great skiing and a great group of Flying Dutchmen! NEW YORK BUS TRIP New York, New York! The annual FDSC bus trip to New York is scheduled for Saturday, April 25th. We will leave at 7am from the back of the K-Mart parking lot on the 5th Street Highway and arrive in Times Square at approximately 9:30am. There will be a second drop-off at Central Park. We will leave New York at 8pm to return home. You are on your own to see a show, shop, eat, drink, or play in the park. The trip, breakfast cakes, and juice are all included for the low price of $ Contact Dave or Carol Slider at or slidca@aol.com for reservations. Killington EPSC Winter Carnival The Killington EPSC Winter Carnival trip has returned home after 4 days of great skiing and partying! The skiing started on Thursday with 16 inches of fresh snow! Highlights of the trip were: **We had great skiing on a nearly empty mountain on Thursday. Happy hour at the Wobbly Barn was hosted by Killington. Then the Inn at the Six Mountains hosted a Wii bowling competition won by Patty Loeper and several rounds of trivia in the bar won by Suzanne Claypoole and Sue McMullen. **Skiing on Friday was awesome, followed by a happy hour at the Killington Grand Hotel. **The council race on Saturday was held under very frigid temperatures. The FDSC took 2nd place. Sue McMullen was the fastest woman on the mountain. Way to go SUE!!! The council banquet at the Killington Grand offered steak filet and fish with a DJ for dancing after the meal. All in all it was a great trip except for one injury--a broken scapula by our own Jayne David. Thanks to everyone who joined us at Killington! Mark David Ski Trails 3

4 SOCIAL BEES CORNER In the local Merchandiser, a few weeks ago... it was announced that the local sports teams selected a New Hero... Her name is Natalie Biancone. This is our member Jim Biancone's little grand niece. She was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in Sept 2007 at the age of 15 months. Both the Reading Royals Hockey team and Berks County Wild (minor league football team) have adopted Natalie for the 2009 fundraisers. Saturday, March 7th, a portion of each ticket sold ($15.00 each ticket) will be donated to Natalie's fund. For tickets call Justin Kauffman at The Wild will also host a season long raffle of a "Natalie's Rainbow of Hope" afghan. You can find more info on nataliesrainbowofhope@verizon.net. We're not putting away our skis, but we are thinking about the end of summer already. Of course, that means planning for the FDSC's monumental annual trip to Wildwood. October may seem a long way off, however you need to plan now if you want to be a part of this great annual event. This year's event will be from October 2nd to October 4th. (Arrangements can be made if you want to arrive earlier or stay later.) Once again we will be staying at the American Inn in North Wildwood. The hotel is ideally located on the beach just off the north end of the boardwalk. On Saturday morning, we will be continuing the tradition with the Fifth Annual Flying Dutchmen Volleyball Tournament. Saturday afternoon will be the Third Annual Key West Shot Party and Contest. You've got the summer to perfect your shot creation. We'll supply the serving tables and shot cups. You bring the fixings for your favorite shot. (Remember--presentation is half the fun.) We'll have some fun prizes for the winner. We've heard a lot of rumors about what you are scheming to make this contest even more interesting. (And we encourage it.) Saturday night we have a great dinner on the beach and entertainment by the pool. On Sunday, there will be our becoming more world famous brunch followed by the Sand Sculpture contest. If this sounds like way too much energy for the beach, then just hang out on the boardwalk, beach, or by the pool. The price will be unchanged from last year. The cost per person is $170 per person for a double, $155 per person for a triple, and $145 per person for a quad. (If you have a house in the area and just want to stop by for a while, please let us know in advance so we can work a price based on what you would like to attend.) The incredibly cheap price includes: Lodging Friday night and Saturday night Breakfast Saturday Dinner on Saturday Brunch on Sunday Endless munchies Endless Beer, Wine, Soda, and Water A deposit of $50 per person holds your space and rooms go quick. If you do not make a deposit then you do not have a reservation. Final payments will be due by August 22, Payments (made payable to FDSC) can be mailed to Stan Miller or Erick Confer at 66 Glenview Drive, Fleetwood, PA Give us a call at for more information. There will be no refunds for cancellations after September 3rd, VOUCHER REFUND POLICY Unused vouchers must be returned to the same Salesperson you bought them from. 5 Competition Jim Dolan Hello Dutchmen, Hope everyone is progressing with their skiing. Seems like only last week that the lesson program started. Hard to believe it's just about over. My sources informed me of the race results from the EPSC winter carnival in Killington. The race team took second behind Lancaster Ski Club. The timing of the race was very controversial. With the well know name of Killington and their race dept/school, they seemed to screw up the race results. They were actually hand timing! All that behind, everyone had a great time. We wish Jayne David a quick recovery. Last night we had the club champion race at Bear Creek. Forty-two racers competed for medals and/or bragging rights. Congratulations to the winners: Fastest Female Skier Nancy Brandi, Fastest Female Snow Boarder Michele Hassing, Fastest Male Skier Bernie Resch, and Fastest Male Snow Boarder Jimmy Kondisko. The Couples race results and the individual results will be announced at the Spring Carnival medals ceremony. Special thanks to Todd Loeper, Fred Patton, and the Bear Creek race crew for a fine job and making the race possible. Keep watching towards the middle of March for information on the Bear Creek annual pond skimming. Following the pond skimming will be a tail gate party in the parking lot hosted by Jeff and me. It's a great time, watching or participating. Hope to see you there. Ski safe, pond skim dry, Jim Membership Sue Gottschall Hey fellow Dutchmen! I hope you've all been enjoying the great ski conditions we're having this winter. Check out the long list of new member names in this issue. It looks like the word has spread about what a great deal it is to be a member of the Flying Dutchmen. Our membership is fast approaching last year's total, and I'm hoping to pass 900 soon. Thanks again to all of you who have referred new members this year. And a special congratulations goes to Greg Poticher, winner of this year's new member recruiting contest! Don't forget that I'm still keeping track of all your referrals. Anyone who refers five or more new members in one year will receive a $25 dues reimbursement. I also want to remind you about our annual end-of-season membership special that starts after the last trip has left. New members can join for just the $10 initiation fee, and then renew in the fall for $25. So if you know anyone who is interested, tell them now is their chance to join for a discount and be a part of all our summer fun and 50th Anniversary activities. See you on the slopes! Sue Skimeister Marianne van der Velde Hello Skiers & Riders! By the time you all read this another lesson program will have come and gone. I hope you all had a fantastic 7 weeks. Make sure you give a big Thank You to your instructors, who give a lot of their time to help make this happen for all of our members. We couldn't offer this to you without their generosity of time and passion for the sport! Depending on the weather, we may still be having one more bump clinic at Roundtop so if you've been wanting to tackle the moguls but were too nervous this is the perfect opportunity. Please me if you'd like to attend. Lessons may be finished, but there's still plenty of good skiing to be had. Hope to see you all out on the slopes! FDSC Racing Through the Years The Flying Dutchmen Ski Club race team has been around for almost 40 years. Starting in the very early 70's, the race team has competed against other clubs throughout the New England area. The 80's brought the Grand Marnier Challenge, later renamed The Jeep Challenge Race. At this time, we were considered to be one of the best race teams on the East Coast. From the 90's until today, the team competes in the ASRA Circuit, (American Ski Racing Alliance), which takes place mainly in the New England area. We also compete in the Nastar Series, which is national. Our race team finished 11th out of 1845 teams. Once a year we compete in the EPSC (Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council) race, which is held locally, and we race against other teams from the Council (approx 15 other teams). Our Master's Team, for skiers 50 years and older, have won this cup for many years. Liederkranz Scholarship The Reading Liederkranz is pleased to announce a German Heritage Scholarship program. 10 HENRY DRASHER MEMORIAL Henry left us Thursday, January 15th. He fought to the end, but eventually was overwhelmed by cancer. His tenacious battle surely had him feeling worse on the inside than he would ever let us see. "One of a kind" is an overused description of someone. But with Henry "one of a kind" fits well. He fit in with a remarkably diverse alphabet soup of people and clubs--rmc, FDSC, NSPS, PSIA, BMSA, BSA, and BVI. Those of you who know those initials will recognize the range of interests represented. For the rest of you they mean the Reading Motorcycle Club, the Flying Dutchmen Ski Club, the National Ski Patrol System, the Professional Ski Instructors of America, the Blue Marsh Sailing Association, the Boy Scouts of America (especially the Sea Scouts), and the British Virgin Islands. He was as comfortable flying on two wheels as on one hull. He'd fit in the crowd at the Cemetery Inn or the Grill at Bear Creek. He fixed bikes and terminal Intermediates. But Henry really came into his own on the water. The image of his cat on one hull slicing all the way across Blue Marsh was beautiful. On his many Caribbean sailing trips he was a comfortable, confident Captain. He knew his ropes but he never went overboard. His crew had a good time and learned about the set of a sail and just how many cases of beer it took to power a catamaran. He'd always look for a little more speed and then get it. There was a huge, satisfied smile when we caught it just right. Henry taught me much about sailing, motorcycles, and shooting. I hope I gave back something in skiing and ski patrolling. One thing we could all learn from Henry was that he always gave more than he ever expected in return. Henry made friends, male and female--and they stayed friends for the long haul. The female friends of course were all called "sweetheart." We rode with him, sailed with him, worked with him, skied with him, and found Henry always made the party better. He was a good man and a tough guy and a sweetheart himself. While friends were important to Henry, family always took precedence. Many's the time Henry declined an invitation to party or ride because he was going to Hazelton for a visit. We've seen his marriage to Kathy in this most difficult of times to be one of remarkable caring for each other. Henry continued to look forward. He planned to make the Flying Dutchmen lesson nights this season. And he was waiting for some nice riding weather to visit the Harley store to see if he really needed the newest Buell. From the way he poured over the articles and pictures, I believe he might have gone for the new 1125 CR if the road conditions had been better. He was tough to the end, retaining his dignity and leaving us poorer for his departure.
