1 September 2010 Calendar of Events September 2 - General Meeting Trip Night September Biking weekend at the Lodge New Dates! September 16 - General Meeting September 26 - Race Picnic The Prutzman s October Wildwood October 7 - General Meeting October 21 - General Meeting Membership Meetings are held at 7:30 PM at the READING LIEDERKRANZ 143 Spook Lane Reading, PA THE Deadline for the October issue of Ski Trails is Thursday, September 9th. President Ed Soja Hello Skiers and Snowboarders! Can you believe we re in September already? Where did the summer go? I hope you had a great summer and are ready to jump into fall. And how about our teachers out there, are you ready for another school year? I hope so, because it s here. For the month of September there are a few important things for you to remember: we go back to having two meetings a month, Trip Night, and the deadline for renewals. The FDSC really starts getting busy preparing for the upcoming ski season, so it s time to switch back to two meetings a month. As always we will be meeting on the first and third Thursdays of the month. So come on out and join the fun. Also in September is our annual Trip Night, which will be on Thursday the 2nd. Here s your opportunity to talk to the trip leaders about the awesome trips they have planned for this year. All the trips look great and it s going to be hard to choose. So bring your checkbook and sign up for the trip or trips that will make your ski season the best ever. Please remember that your membership renewal must be paid in order to sign up for the trips. Renewal deadline is September 30th, so please get your renewals in as soon as possible. You don t want to miss out on any of the fun and excitement of the upcoming season. It s going to be a blast. Our general meetings are a great way to hear the latest and greatest of what s happening in the club. It is also a fun time to socialize and have some laughs with your fellow Dutchmen. If you re new to FDSC, this is an opportunity to learn more about the club and to meet new people. So, whether you ve been in the club for a long time or just joined, come on out to the meetings to see what s happening, and make sure you stop me and say hello. Hope to see you there. 2 Competition Nancy Brandi Hope your summer was full of fun with family and friends. We re about to round that corner from summer into fall and then the best Winter = skiing, racing, snow-boarding, all those fun downhill action sports. Yippee! By the time you read this article, you will have had the chance to sign up for a ski trip from the great selection that the trip leaders put together. The EPSC Winter Carnival trip is the weekend of January 27th at Waterville Valley and Loon Mt. It would be awesome to have a group from our club to participate in the Carnival Race. I hope you have it scheduled on your calendar. Should be fun. Don t forget, the Race picnic is coming up on Sunday, September 26th. Time is 4pm and place is Paul and Margie Prutzman s house. Contact me for more information. Play hard and be safe! Nancy Lodge Neal Kline Hello from the Lodge!! Don t forget that the Lodge is a great jumping off place for all your fun in the Poconos. Go to a race or a casino and stay at the Lodge. Many fun destinations are close to the Lodge. For Things To Do In The Poconos: Contact the Lodge Director for available dates. Social Director Debbie Pasquale Who s Got the Fun? You know you re a Dutchmen when 9 pounds of melted butter is not enough for 125 clam bakes! Wow! Talk about fun! Our annual Members Appreciation Picnic was a huge success! Of course, our awesome members make our club what it is. I d like to thank everyone who has given their time and talents this past year, especially those who help make the picnic a success: Holly Hess for designing and printing the invitations, the Board for scooping, cutting, and serving dinner, Lori Hudson for transporting the bakes, and anyone who baked a delicious dessert. Thank you one and all! Now for some sad news, Las Vegas Night on September 25th has been cancelled. Thanks to Patti and her crew for trying, maybe next time. We will, however, have a silent auction at some point in the not too distant future to benefit Relay for Life. The race team picnic is Sunday, September 26th, at 4pm at Paul and Margie Prutzman s house. Nancy Brandi has the details. Don t forget Wildwood, Oct 1st- 3rd. Rooms are going fast, so get your payments to Stan or Erick quickly. Now that s a FUN weekend! Coming soon is Winter Sports night on Thursday, November 4th at the Riveredge. More details to follow. We ve Got the Fun! Debbie Membership Lori Hudson Hello, Dutchmen! As we are nearing the end of summer, our thoughts happily turn to deciding which ski trips we will sign up for on Trip Night. This is a reminder that your membership renewal should be paid prior to signing up for any trips. Trip leaders will be checking the membership roster to make sure dues are paid. Also, September 30th is the deadline for renewals at the $30 rate. Renewals after September 30 will cost you $35, so save yourself the extra money and get your renewals in before the end of the month. Renewal forms were printed in the June and July issues of Ski Trails, or you can download a form at fdsc.org. I ll be happy to take your renewal at a meeting, too! I m looking forward to doing some hiking this fall--see you on the trails! Lori Ski Conditioning Get those legs and lungs ready for another great season on the slopes with Ski Conditioning classes at Down Under Sports and Fitness! Check back next month for details. Kevin DON T MISS ANYTHING! Please notify your membership director at membership@fdsc.org of any address, , or phone number changes Flying Dutchman Dr. Hanspeter Geering died suddenly on July 5, 2010 of heart failure after enjoying a last bowl of ice cream. Hanspeter was born in Basel Switzerland in 1925 where he was a champion down hill ski racer and earned his doctorate in economics. His love of American Jazz brought him to New York City in the early 50 s where he met and married his wife of 32 years, Aurella Patricia Geipel. Together they raised their five children; Hanspeter initiating each one into the world of skiing shortly after taking his or her first steps. He transferred his grace on the slopes and love of the sport, not only to his children and grandchildren, but to generations of young people all over Berks county as a ski instructor at the Blue March (Heidelberg) Ski Area, which he continued to do into his late 70 s. He resided in Bernville since H. P. never missed a chance to get on skis, famously taking to the slopes in rentals and a business suit on more than one occasion. He was a member of The Flying Dutchmen for many years. His exuberance for life and the joy and love he brought to his family and friends will be sadly missed. There will be a memorial service for H. Peter Geering on Sunday, September 19th at 12:30 in Yardley at the Episcopal Church on Lake Afton. Also, there will be a Brunch on Sunday after the service at the Yardley Country Club. Please RSVP if you will be staying for the brunch. For more information please contact his daughter Suzanne Foster at or Suzanne@tfosterjewelers.com. Wildwood 2010 Past President Rick Auchenbach Hello Skiers, It was nice to have a few months off from writing a Ski Trails article. [Ed. note: Boooo!!!] Now it s time to get back to work. September and Trip Night signal the start of pre-ski season. It s time to commit to your favorite trips and shop the pre-season ski sales. Snowflakes won t fall for months, but early preparation will help assure a better ski season. Oh yeah, don t forget about physical preparation, too. Some of your ski buddies took the ski conditioning classes at Down Under Sports & Fitness last fall, and some have continued. If you re serious about preparing to ski this season, you should check this out. Put your plans in motion. Ski season is just around the corner. Enjoy the journey, Rick The long range forecast says that the Weekend of October 1st-3rd is going to be a great weekend. Okay--it may be a little early for the weather forecast. Must have been the fun forecast. As of the time I m writing this, we still have some rooms open. I know--you just want to see what the weather will be. No matter, it s always a great time. You ve seen the ads: almost everything covered for $140 per person, cheaper if you re sharing the room with more than one other person. Since this is a Social Event, you can even bring nonmembers. So get those nonskiing friends (I know we all have them.) to sign up, too. It s a great time to be at the beach for one last summer bash before we start getting geared up for winter. Call us at to get signed up. By the way, if you already signed up but didn t pay in full yet, please do so now! You don t want to miss out. Stan & Erick
