1 March 2018 Calendar of Events JUNE 1 Fightin Phils Game JUNE 24 Train Ride Wine Tour REMINDER: We are now back to two meetings per month! Mark your calendars to meet us the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month unless otherwise posted here. March 15th is Karaoke night come out and join the fun! 2018 Membership Contest Winners: Alexis Blatt Ed Graefe Nancy Miltenberger Each received a $50.00 gift card. Don t forget that every Friday the Dutchmen are celebrating somewhere. see inside for Happy Hour locations. President Dave McFarland Check for updates It was the best of times, it was the worst of times My apologies to Charles Dickens, but that about summed up the Revelstoke/SilverStar trip. You ve probably already heard the Air Canada stories, so I won t focus on them. Let s just say that if it could go wrong, it did go wrong concerning flights to and from Kelowna, B.C.. But that s not what I want to talk about. This trip exemplified what is great about taking a trip with the Flying Dutchmen. We have fantastic experienced trip leaders. Sue and Dave worked tirelessly to minimize the problems and maximize the fun. We have the best travelers. The sense of camaraderie in the face of difficult circumstances was always there, and the groups that formed, expanded and morphed into other groups meant that it was rare that anyone was sliding solo. We stay at the best places. Our accommodations were top notch. The Presidential suite at SilverStar had a hot air boot and glove warmer in the closet! Why else should you sign up for a trip? Meet new people! Don t sweat it if you don t know everyone. We roomed with two folks we had not met prior to the trip, and had a wonderful time. I watched people finding that they had shared passions in areas beyond the ski slope. It is easy to make connections and deepen friendships while traveling. And then there are the mountains amazing vistas, fantastic slopes, trees, bumps. Something for everyone. Make a point to stop somewhere on the mountain, just look around, breath in and ponder how great it is to be there. When the trips are announced for 2019, do yourself a favor and make this the year that you join us. Sign up for someplace you ve not been, or choose an old favorite. You can t go wrong. Just remember to pack a toothbrush and a change of underwear in your carry-on. You might be glad you did! See you on the slopes! Dave Membership Meetings are now held at: the EVERGREEN COUNTRY CLUB at: 7:30 PM 415 Hartz Road, Fleetwood, PA Come early for food and drink! KITCHEN HOURS Friday 5:30-9:00 PM Saturday 5:30-8:00 PM Sunday 3:00-7:00 PM THE DEADLINE FOR THE APRIL ISSUE OF SKI TRAILS IS THURSDAY MARCH 15, nd & 4th Sundays Brunch 10 AM-2 PM Alternate Sundays Lite Fare at the Bar
2 Hello skiers and boarders! Just like last year February was a very mixed month of weather for skiers! The lucky ones saw great powder and others saw hard pack and rain. Thank you to our leaders who saw that all of these trips provided great times for our members! I ve seen lots of great pictures from all our completed trips! Disappointed I wasn t able to go on all our trips! We have to remember that ski trips are in winter and traveling may present problems. The Dutchmen are such a fun group to travel with and know how to go with the flow and provide lots of fun for all. Remember trips are a great way to meet so many people and establish new friends in the Club. Whistler is our only remaining Trip. Unfortunately, the Okemo Family Trip has been Canceled. If anyone has some suggestions for making the Family Trip a successful part of our Trip Log next year we would love suggestions. I am very happy that our 2018 season has been, once again, successful, because of you - our leaders and members. Don t forget to thank your Trip Leaders. Our 2019 Trip Log is in the final planning stages and has some great choices. It is subject to slight changes, of course, at this early date. I will announce our 2018 trips in a future newsletter. Please plan ahead as signups for the Western will start at the June meeting! This allows us better choice in lodging and for our members to have more time to make payments on the higher priced trips. As always we look for new trip leaders for future trips. Enjoy the rest of this ski season! Ski you on the slopes! Trippin Kevin Claypoole Kevin Greetings all! As you re reading this, our local racing season is nearing it s end, and regional and national championships will soon be decided. So far we ve had some great results: First place gold once again for the Dutchmen team at the EPSC Winter Carnival at Breckenridge, with Jim Dolan winning fastest man on mountain. And a second place for the FDSC team at the Troeg s Cup Challenge. Next month look for the results of our Club Championship Race and the EPSC Cup Race. Still to come is the Mid-Atlantic Masters Foy Cup Finals at West Mt, NY, and the NASTAR National Championships at Squaw Valley, CA March, Competition Chris Berns See you in the gates! Chris 2 Ski Trails
3 Social Director Suzanne Claypoole Membership Director Diane Nolfe March is here! Don t forget Pi Day, March 14th tell some math jokes and bake some pie! We are excited to be co-hosting our second St. Patty s Day Celebration at the Evergreen Club on Saturday, March 17th, 7-10PM and there will be no cover charge. The Evergreen will have food and drink specials, music by Critical Mass and some other fun things, so wear your green to the Evergreen! When you think of spring, do you think of baseball? Then don t miss our annual Fightin Phils Happy Hour on Friday, June 1st. Look for the ad in this issue for more details. Finally, the FDSC mountain bikers will begin riding soon. Watch for ride times/locations on our online bulletin board. The great thing about our club is that we are active all year. Take advantage of some (or all) of our events and activities. Better yet, bring your friends family members, neighbors and coworkers and help our membership grow this spring. Have fun & get social Suzanne Hello Dutchmen! I hope you are having an enjoyable ski season. This year, I met a lot of new people in the club through the lessons program and various trips. It is always interesting to learn where members live, work and play. We currently network via our website, , Facebook page, and Ski Trails. Your board of directors thought that maybe we could do more to promote interaction. Maybe you are looking for someone to paint your house, install a pool, teach a yoga class or tune your skis! To expand on this idea, we are creating an FDSC business/service directory. This free resource will allow members to showcase their many talents and professional skills. If you would like to participate, please follow the link below to compete the survey. It will also be sent to you through our Constant Contact service. I ll collect the responses and make the information available on our website. With over 565 members, we should have a lot of variety and cover a large geographic region. If the publication grows, we may add photos and other features. Thanks for your participation. I look forward to shopping with the Dutchmen. FXFukKhpmOr_uxtgPIVD6WYg/viewform?usp=sf_link Diane Skimeister Bob Fox Greetings Skiers and Riders! It has been awhile since we had 7 consecutive Tuesday nights with out major disruption or cancellation from weather, but we made it! A sincere thank you to all the instructors, students, administrators and Bear Creek who made this a successful lesson program. I have gotten positive feed back from those I ve talked to and welcome any comments, suggestions or observations. I also want to recognize the new skiers and riders who trusted us to help them get started right in this sport. I was impressed by the advancement in their skill level in just a few short weeks. It makes a statement of how valuable this benefit is to our members! Again thank you all for making this happen! Enjoy the rest of the season! Bob As the season winds down, so does our voucher program. If you purchased Blue Mountain passes this season and were unable to use them, you must return them to the salesperson you purchased them from (either Bill Stockler or Fehl s) no later than Thursday, March 15. Please include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. There is a $1 per pass fee for each pass returned. Past President Paul Schwartz Elections are the first meeting in April (April 5 th ). Only members who have passed the Basic Test are voting members. If you think that you have passed the test, but are not listed as a voting member, please see Bob Fox (Skimeister) before April 5 th. 4 Breckenridge Ski Trip Save The Date Fightin Phils 3rd Base Picnic Happy Hour Buffet / Game June 1st Buffet 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Game 7:05 p.m. EPSC Winter Carnival took us back to Breckenridge! For FDSC it was the first of the trio of trips utilizing the Epic Pass. It was fun learning how much vertical some of our die-hard skiers could accumulate over the 5 peaks. Conditions were good considering there had been a lack of snow out west. The Carnival schedule tends to be loaded with activities. One of the main events is the race we had the first place team Jim Dolan, Bob Smith, John Ovelman, Ron Goodman, Cindy Manning and Karen. Jim Dolan organized both our race teams and was the fastest man on the hill! The Gala s theme was a Snow Ball. Many of our Dutchmen joined in the fun by dressing or accessorizing. Of note, though, was a member of Austin, TX club looking for the most handsome guy in the room. Our own Angelo Marcino got that honor. Two other of our guys got the nicknames: Moonie 1 and Moonie 2. Not going to say who they were but their initials are Joe Spica and Jim Dolan. The myth that you might see a moose on a trip has been realized. Chris & Andy Kreusberger and Caroline Freed actually saw three. However, there are no pictures as proof. So we are questioning what was in their OJ. Pine Ridge was convenient for shuttle service and the option to ski-in on the Four O clock run. Which also was convenient for sledding on pizza pans. Much thanks to Bob Smith for being an organizer for the Winter Carnival and providing the Fireball for our day trip to Vail; Ashley Fehl for the goodie bags; all the friends who helped especially John & Cindy Pietrowski.
